Amtech hits new record in solar equipment sales

By Mark Osborne Aug 05, 2016

Specialist PV manufacturing equipment supplier Amtech Systems backed-up previous quarters order bookings with solar equipment sales in its third fiscal quarter of 2016, reaching US$38.3 million, a new quarterly record.

Amtech Systems reported overall quarterly revenue of US$77.9 million, which included US$38.3 million in solar segment sales. Solar segment sales in the previous quarter stood at US$9.8 million. The previous recent high in solar segment sales had been in Amtech’s FY3Q 2015 when sales topped US$37.5 million.

Gross margin in the third quarter of fiscal 2016 was 29%, compared to 27% in the preceding quarter and 25% in the third quarter of fiscal 2015. The net loss in the current quarter was US$1.2 million, sown slightly from US$1.5 million in the previous quarter.

      New orders

Amtech reported new solar segment orders of US$13.2 million, compared to US$28 million in the preceding quarter. Solar segment customer orders in the first nine months of its fiscal year stood at US$64.2 million with its solar segment order backlog at $45.3 million.

Mr. Fokko Pentinga, Chief Executive Officer of Amtech, commented, "During the quarter we made significant progress in expanding our served available market with the successful introduction of our next generation PECVD and ALD systems, including a successful showing at the Shanghai New Energy Conference (SNEC), the largest solar exhibition in the world. In addition to our large installed base for diffusion, our combined installed base and backlog now also includes 2 Gigawatts of PECVD systems and several hundred Megawatts of ALD PERC systems. We have compelling technology solutions for both current and next generation solar cell designs, including PERC and N-type. We are recognized as a market leader for our technology solutions and look to capitalize on the opportunities within this expanding global market for solar while driving profitable growth over the long term."

The company also announced that its solar subsidiary, Tempress Systems had received an order in July of approximately 400MW for its next generation solar PECVD systems from a top tier solar cell manufacturer in Asia. Tool shipments were said to occur within the next six to nine months.

Amtech noted that its backlog of PECVD systems stood at around 1.4GW of cell capacity. The backlog also included an order from a top tier cell manufacturer for its high efficiency PERC package solution that combined Tempress' PECVD and SoLayTec's ALD systems.

      Guidance

Amtech said that it expected total group revenue for the quarter ending September 30, 2016 to be in the range of US$35 to US$38 million.

By Mark Osborne Jan 24, 2017

Specialist PV manufacturing equipment supplier Amtech Systems has reported new solar orders since the end of September, 2016 have topped US$60 million, driven by PV manufacturers in China, Malaysia and Taiwan.

Amtech noted that new order wins included its high throughput PECVD platform and n-type bi-facial solar cell turnkey order from a new customer in China. The majority of the orders were expected to ship within the next six to nine months, according to the company.

Fokko Pentinga, CEO and President of Amtech said, "These competitive wins are a direct result of our ongoing investment program and a clear testament to the Company's ability to meet the market's expectations as they selectively invest in next-generation technology solutions.”

The company said that its advanced n-type cell technology led to securing the turnkey order from the new customer in China, which was would be the first part of a multi-phase 1GW cell and module expansion.

“Recently, we have experienced increased customer interest in our n-type technology. As the solar market looks to the future, we believe n-type cell technology has the best roadmap to higher efficiency," added Pentinga.

Amtech had previously reported new solar orders in its fiscal fourth quarter 2016 ended September 30, 2016 of only US$11.8 million and had achieved a new order high of US$28 million in its fiscal 2016 second quarter.

In-house cell capacity expansions and migrations from the 'Silicon Module Super League' (SMSL) and others are behind an increased use of high-efficiency, or advanced, cell concepts across both p-multi and p-mono substrates.

Amtech raising US$9.3 million from new shares offering

By Mark Osborne Aug 18, 2017

Specialist PV manufacturing equipment supplier Amtech Systems is planning a new share offering to raise around US$9.3 million, which could be used for potential acquisitions.

Amtech said that it was offering 1,055,000 shares of its common stock at a price of US$9.50 per share, with ROTH Capital Partners acting as sole manager for the offering.

The company recently reported its best performing quarter since a record peak in 2011, driven by a for bifacial N-type technology turnkey line contract from a new customer based in China. New solar orders were US$54.2 million, compared to US$46.9 million in the previous quarter. This is the highest level of total orders since the first quarter of 2011.

The proceeds could be used for potential acquisitions, which have been a key part of Amtech’s business strategy in recent years, which has included semiconductor and solar equipment company purchases such as, BTU International and SoLayTec.

However, Amtech also noted that the proceeds could be used for working capital, capital expenditures, due to the large solar equipment order backlog, which stood at US$98.2 million, up from US$66.9 million at the end of its second fiscal quarter.

The company had cash and cash equivalents of US$39.2 million at the June, 2017.

Amtech Systems (NASDAQ: ASYS) reported Q3 EPS of $0.33, $0.43 better than the analyst estimate of ($0.10). Revenue for the quarter came in at $41.2 million versus the consensus estimate of $35.2 million.

      GUIDANCE:

Amtech Systems sees Q4 2018 revenue of $26-28 million, versus the consensus of $40.4 million.

The company expects revenues for the quarter ending September 30, 2018 to be in the range of $26 to $28 million. Gross margin for the quarter ending September 30, 2018 is expected to be in the upper 20 to lower 30 percent range, with operating margin negative, partly due to expected restructuring costs in the quarter.
The solar and semiconductor equipment industries can be cyclical and inherently impacted by changes in market demand. Additionally, operating results can be significantly impacted, positively or negatively, by the timing of orders, system shipments, and the net impact of revenue deferral on shipments, recognition of revenue based on customer acceptances and the financial results of solar and semiconductor manufacturers. The results for the coming quarters will be significantly influenced by the timing of future orders of the 1GW turnkey project and the timing of meeting start-up milestones of the turnkey production lines.
A substantial portion of Amtech's revenues are denominated in Euros. The revenue outlook provided in this press release is based on an assumed exchange rate between the United States Dollar and the Euro. A significant decrease in the value of the Euro in relation to the United States Dollar could cause actual revenues to be lower than anticipated.
