Ideal Power to enter German storage market with PCS order

By Tom Kenning Nov 14, 2016

Power conversion specialist Ideal Power has received an order for 0.5MW of its 30kW power conversion systems (PCS) for commercial energy storage projects in Germany, from an unnamed customer or customers.

The order comes off the back of a demonstration project at a commercial facility in Germany that used Ideal Power’s PCS, which is based on its Power Packet Switching Architecture (PPSA). Ideal Power claims that its PCS systems are smaller, lighter and have greater efficiency than traditional technologies.

They are also software configurable, allowing operation in 50Hz or 60Hz environments, which helps deployment in a wide range of markets including solar PV, variable frequency drives, battery energy storage, mobile power, microgrids and electric vehicle charging. The lower size also reduces installation costs, the company claims.

Dan Brdar, chief executive of Ideal Power, said: "We are pleased to expand into Germany, which has a mature residential storage market and burgeoning demand for commercial and industrial (C&I) storage. The pilot commercial installation was a successful case study and shows that our products combined with distributed energy storage have value beyond the US demand charge application."

The German energy storage market will be worth US$1.03 billion by 2021, representing an 11-fold jump on its 2015 market value in megawatt terms, according to a report by US analyst GTM Research in July.

Ideal Power is also developing a bi-directional, bipolar junction transistor (B-TRAN) which has the potential to dramatically increase bi-directional power switching efficiency and power density.

Over the summer, German energy storage hardware and services provider sonnen also launched a new product for the commercial energy storage market using power conversion systems from Ideal Power.

Ideal Power’s solar-plus-storage microgrid solution for US Air Force

By Danielle Ola Sep 21, 2016

The UK’s Ideal Power, a power conversion expert, has partnered with EnerDel and its lithium-ion batteries to create a mobile solar-plus-storage microgrid for the US Air Force.

The system was launched under a year-long programme formulated by researchers at the Air Force Research Laboratory and University of Dayton Research Institute.

Air Force bases and other militia locations are often reliant on diesel fuel to produce power in remote locations that are difficult to connect to the grid. Not only is this method expensive and environmentally adverse, but it is also unreliable as it can be problematic sending convoys into hostile environments.

To solve these problems, EnerDel selected Ideal Power’s grid resilient multi-port 30kW power conversion system together with an 8kW tent-mounted solar array to form a portable microgrid, which not only provides a cost-effective alternative to diesel, but adds a degree of energy security as power can be generated from solar independent of any utility grid. Furthermore, Ideal Power’s software is ideal for remote locations as it is compact and configurable; enabling it to operate at both 50Hz and 60Hz, and therefore in a range of geographical locations. As further support for the US Air Force Energy Strategic Plan, the deployment of lightweight Ideal Power software reduces installation costs, which is preferable for military microgrid applications.

"EnerDel is very excited to demonstrate our fourth generation advanced energy storage and conversion technology at an Air Force operated training facility,” said Derrick Buck, engineering director at EnerDel, in a statement. “The collaboration of the Ideal Power and EnerDel teams allowed for the successful commissioning of our Mobile Hybrid Power System with Ideal Power's power conversion systems. We look forward to expanding our partnership with Ideal Power and continuing the future development of our military/microgrid product portfolio."

The microgrid is performing successfully at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland where it provides enough clean electricity to power lights and air conditioning for ten FOB living quarters. Based on the favourable results seen here, and in additional rigorous testing, the company is confident that the solar-plus-storage system could eventually be deployed at Air Force locations worldwide.

“There is a history of successful commercial applications coming out of the military. This installation is a great example of the type of project that can lead to penetration of the large military and microgrid markets in addition to broad applications in a commercial setting,” said Bill Alexander, CTO at Ideal Power. “Ordinary solar PV installations can only supply power while the utility grid is up and running. This system supplies power from solar PV independent of the utility grid and points the way towards microgrid-ready solar PV which will supply electricity – with or without utility power – and allow facilities to continue powered operations from battery and/or solar PV after loss of utility power.”

Aquion Energy and Ideal Power partner on Sonoma Winery
      April 26, 2016 Kathie Zipp : 0 Comments

Aquion Energy, developer and manufacturer of Aqueous Hybrid Ion (AHI) batteries and energy storage systems, and Ideal Power, a developer of power conversion technologies, announce the installation of Aquion’s AHI batteries using Ideal Power’s Grid Resilient 30 kW Multi-port Power Conversion System as part of a microgrid at Stone Edge Farm, a 16-acre organic winery and farm in Sonoma, California. The energy storage project is designed to provide a range of benefits, from integrating renewables to reducing overall energy costs, proving the broad possibilities of microgrid architectures.

The solar PV + storage installation is part of the farm’s innovative microgrid and is designed to provide energy for a number of buildings on the site, including the primary residence, offices and workshops. During daylight hours, solar PV provides energy for the buildings and charges the batteries. During nighttime hours and periods of cloud cover, the batteries provide energy for building loads.

The system consists of fourteen 25 kWh Aquion M-Line Battery Modules providing approximately 350 kWh of energy storage capacity, connected to a 32 kW solar array using Ideal Power’s 30 kW multi-port power conversion system. The Ideal Power multi-port system architecture enables the direct DC-level connection of solar PV and energy storage in one compact, highly efficient, transformerless package, eliminating the complexities and redundancies of older, AC-coupled systems. Aquion’s safe and environmentally friendly battery technology is a unique saltwater chemistry made from abundant, nontoxic materials. The batteries are designed for daily deep cycling in long duration (4+ hour charge/discharge) applications, making them ideal for solar installations.

The microgrid project, developed by Wooster Engineering Specialties, a general engineering contractor, provides solar self-consumption, peak shaving and load shifting services to Stone Edge Farm for energy self-sufficiency and to reduce its carbon footprint. The grid-tied microgrid is capable of islanding and operating autonomously, and is also generating sufficient energy that Stone Edge Farm is able to sell a substantial amount of the energy produced back to local utility PG&E.

“The Stone Edge Farm project is an excellent example of how long-duration advanced batteries plus solar PV can enable on-site renewable energy generation and maximize solar self-consumption. Our clean and sustainable batteries are a natural fit to help the farm meet its zero carbon emissions goal. We’re proud to be part of the Stone Edge project and their cutting-edge efforts to leverage clean energy technologies in support of their business and the planet,” said Scott Pearson, CEO of Aquion Energy.

“Microgrids utilizing renewable energy and energy storage technologies will be a crucial part of the global energy infrastructure moving forward,” commented Dan Brdar, CEO of Ideal Power. “This project will provide an important model for the development of microgrids in the future. We’re proud that our power conversion system was selected as part of this Aquion project to help lay the foundation for new energy applications.”

Ideal Power and Aquion previously announced a technology partnership in which they tested Ideal Power’s power conversion systems alongside Aquion’s AHI batteries to ensure seamless interoperability and optimal performance for a range of applications. This project is the first commercial deployment of the two companies’ technologies alongside one another for an energy storage application.
