Hy, Infineon`s

Habe gerade einen interessanten Artikel zum o.g. Thema gelesen, der einem die kleinen Halbleiterchen so richtig schmackhaft machen und einem ungemein das Gemüt vergolden kann. Der Phantasie wird da so richtig Zunder gegeben. Ich weiß leider nicht, wie ich den Artikel hier rein kriege.

P.S. Das finnische "Bürgerkärtchen", von dem dort die Rede ist, ist übrigens mit Infineon-Chips bestückt (aus: "STERN")

DSL transceiver pushes into high bit rate

Apr. 21, 2000 (Electronic Engineering Times - CMP via COMTEX) -- SAN JOSE,
CALIF. - Infineon Technologies Corp. has begun sampling Socrates, or PEB22622, a
single-chip, single-channel symmetric high-bit-rate digital subscriber line
(SHDSL) transceiver.

Christian Wolff, vice president and general manager of Infineon`s transceivers
group business unit, said that the IC is suited for customized high-speed
subscriber access and central-office applications.

Socrates is based on the 16-level, trellis-coded, pulse amplitude modulation
line code (TC-PAM), which Wolff said gives it an advantage over HDSL-based,
single-pair, 2.3-Mbit/second systems in terms of interoperability and spectral
compatibility.

Socrates offers variable bit rates from 160 kbits/second to 2,360 kbits/s and is
fully compatible with the ETSI SDSL and ITU G.SHDSL standards, Wolff said.
"Interoperability, spectral compatibility and higher loop reach are the
preconditions for mass deployment," Wolff said, adding that the Socrates
transceiver is approved by Full Service Access Network, a group of leading
service providers, to coexist with existing services.

The device is compatible with POTS, ISDN, ADSL, VDSL and HDSL technologies, and
backward-compatible with Infineon`s MuBIC MDSL transceiver.

Wolff said Socrates enables telco and Internet service providers to deliver
near-leased line services over existing copper wires for a smooth transition
from ISDN and T1/E1 services. "Its power consumption of less than 1 watt and its
high level of integration make Socrates suitable for remote-feed applications,
high-density line cards, DSLAMs, digital-loop carriers and network terminators,"
he said. Its integrated delay measurement feature suits it for radio-in-the-loop
applications, Wolff added.

The Socrates transceiver integrates the analog front end, including the line
driver and hybrid, DSP data pump, ROM-based controller for startup, HDLC
controller and time-division multiplex framer. An 8032-type microcontroller
provides a command set for operations and control.

Housed in a 144-pin plastic thin quad flat pack, the part is sampling now. An
integrated solution that includes framer, microcontroller, clock generation,
HDLC controller and hybrid is priced at $35 in quantities of 10,000.
