Nikkei To Reshuffle Stock Average Components April 24
TOKYO (Nikkei)--Nihon Keizai Shimbun Inc. said Saturday that it will change the criteria for selecting components of the Nikkei 225 Stock Average from April 24. Thirty stocks will be removed, including Fuji Spinning Co. (3104) and Nippon Carbide Industries Co. (4064). Replacements include NTT DoCoMo Inc. (9437), Kyocera Corp. (6971) and Seven-Eleven Japan Co. (8183).
They are the first changes in the index since October 1991.
The move is to better reflect market trends by taking into account the advance of the information technology sector and its effects on the industrial structure and the stock market, Nikkei officials said.
Under the new criteria, Nikkei will choose the 450 shares with the highest liquidity from those issues listed on the first section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange. It will then divide them into six sectors -- technology, finance, consumption, materials, capital goods/others and transportation/public utilities -- and select 225 shares by considering the "balance" of the sectors to which they belong.
The seventy-five shares with the highest liquidity will automatically be included.
The liquidity will be measured by:
a) a stock`s trading value over the past five years
b) low rates of price fluctuation compared with trading volume over the past five years.
The new criteria will better reflect the changing realities of the stock market than the current criteria, which are based on turnover and price fluctuation over the past 10 years, Nikkei said.
The index`s components will be in principle reviewed once a year on the first trading day of October, with no limits set on the number of components changed. To ensure continuity there will be no change in the index`s framework or calculation method.
