Digitimes Research: Foxconn to focus investment in Sharp on developing OLED
Jessie Lin, DIGITIMES Research, Taipei [Friday 1 April 2016]

Of Foxconn Electronics' stake investment of JPY388.812 billion (US$3.42 billion) in Sharp, JPY200 billion is earmarked for OLED technology and this means that Foxconn's main motivation of the investment is to develop OLED technology, with production of small-size OLED panels for use in smartphones to kick off in 2018, followed by medium- to large-size applications for tablets, notebooks and TVs, according to Digitimes Research.

As Sharp leads in developing IGZO, Foxconn is expected to apply IGZO back panel technology to OLED panels, Digitimes Research indicated. Foxconn will first attain a considerable global market share for smartphone-use OLED panels and then extend OLED development to medium- to large-size panels.

Foxconn will begin to ship OLED panels for tablets and notebooks in 2021 and shipments will gradually increase from three million units in 2021 to 10.4 million units in 2025. In addition, Foxconn will start shipping OLED panels for TVs in 2021, with shipments to gradually rise from 252,000 units in 2021 to 7.2 million units in 2025.

Sharp may outsource mass production to Innolux, says Foxconn chairman
Ninelu Tu, Osaka; Adam Hwang, DIGITIMES [Wednesday 6 April 2016]

Sharp, following Foxconn Electronics' stake investment, will focus R&D and production on panels involving cutting-edge technologies, while Innolux, a member of the Foxconn Group, will maintain large volume production. Sharp is likely to outsource mass production to Innolux, according to Foxconn chairman Terry Guo speaking at a Taiwan media press conference in Japan.

Among panel makers around the world, Sharp has been a leading developer of IGZO TFT-LCD technology, but such panels have not been widely adopted because Sharp lacks the funding for promotion and marketing, Guo said. The stake investment will help Sharp further develop IGZO TFT-LCD technology.

In addition, Sharp will develop AMOLED technology under Foxconn's financial and global ODM/OEM support, targeting smartphones, smart wearables and VR devices, Guo noted.

Foxconn's stake investment in Sharp is motivated by Sharp's corporate value rather than price, Guo emphasized. Including home-use electric appliances, Sharp has many cutting-edge technologies, and Foxconn will provide funding and large-scale production capability to commercialize such technologies, Guo said.

Guo is 90% confident that Sharp will quickly swing from operational troubles to profitability after the investment.

Foxconn receiving more short lead-time orders, performance to be even better in 3Q16, says chairman
Ninelu Tu, Guiyang; Steve Shen, DIGITIMES [Wednesday 25 May 2016]

Foxconn Electronics has been receiving more short lead-time orders recently amid structural changes of global economy, and this has resulted in an increase in overtime hours at its factories, according to company chairman Terry Gou.

Foxconn's performance will become even better in the third quarter of 2016, Gou said during a briefing meeting with China's Premier Le Keqiang prior to the opening of Guiyang International Big Data Expo 2016 to be held in Guizhou province, southwest China from May 25-29.

Restructuring of human resources will be one of the greatest challenges to businesses worldwide in the future as over 47% of job opportunities will be replaced by machines in the next 20 years, Gou said, noting that the machine means data analysis plus smart applications.

As one of the participants of the Big Data Expo, Foxconn is striving to build an information management platform that will address and integrate six business flows - personnel, commodity, and logistics physically as well as information, financial and technology virtually, Gou said.

Based on the platform, Foxconn will be able to build up smart and environmental friendly plants with cloud networks, high intelligent capability and mobility, Gou added.

Participants of the briefing meeting also include HTC chairperson Cher Wang, Dell president Michael Dell, Huawei president Ren Zhengfei, Baidu chairman Robin Li, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun and India-based NIIT CEO Rahul Keshav Patwardhan.

Qualcomm files breach of contract complaint against Apple manufacturers for non-payment of royalties
Press release; Jessie Shen, DIGITIMES [Wednesday 17 May 2017]

Qualcomm has filed a complaint in the US District Court for the Southern District of California against FIH Mobile and Hon Hai Precision Industry (together known as Foxconn), Pegatron, Wistron, and Compal Electronics, the four manufacturers of all Apple iPhones and iPads sold worldwide, for breaching their license agreements and other commitments with Qualcomm and refusing to pay for use of Qualcomm’s licensed technologies. Qualcomm seeks an order that would require the defendants to comply with their long-standing contractual obligations to Qualcomm, as well as declaratory relief and damages.

Despite a long history of consistently paying royalties under their license agreements with Qualcomm, the manufacturers now are refusing to pay royalties on the Apple products they produce. While not disputing their contractual obligations to pay for the use of Qualcomm’s inventions, the manufacturers say they must follow Apple’s instructions not to pay, Qualcomm indicated.

The license agreements with the manufacturers in many cases were entered into before Apple sold its first iPhone and Apple is not a party to the agreements. Further, the defendants are continuing to pay Qualcomm royalties for use of Qualcomm’s technology in non-Apple products, under the very same agreements that apply to the Apple products, Qualcomm noted.

Qualcomm has already filed a separate claim against Apple for its unlawful interference with the license agreements between Qualcomm and these manufacturers.

"It is unfortunate that we must take this action against these long-time licensees to enforce our agreements, but we cannot allow these manufacturers and Apple to use our valuable intellectual property without paying the fair and reasonable royalties to which they have agreed,” said Don Rosenberg, executive VP and general counsel of Qualcomm. “As Apple continues to collect billions of dollars from consumer sales of its Qualcomm-enabled products, it is using its market power as the wealthiest company in the world to try to coerce unfair and unreasonable license terms from Qualcomm in its global attack on the company. Our license agreements with Apple’s manufacturers remain valid and enforceable. The manufacturers must continue to live up to their obligations under these agreements and Apple should immediately cease its tortious interference.”

Commentary: The US$30 billion question for Foxconn
Ninelu Tu, Taipei; Willis Ke, DIGITIMES [Thursday 3 August 2017]

US president Donald Trump revealed at a meeting with a group of small-business leaders August 1 that Foxconn chairman Terry Gou told him privately that his company could invest as much as US$30 billion in the US, three times the figure announced by Gou at a press conference held on July 27 at the White House. Trump's unexpected disclosure has sparked concerns over Gou's willingness to carry out the sharply-floated investment bid.

At the press conference, Gou announced that Foxconn will spend US$10 billion over the next four years building a LCD panel manufacturing plant in Wisconsin.

Foxconn issued a statement on August 2 that the Wisconsin plant "will be the first of a series of facilities we will be building in several states as part of the robust electronics ecosystem we will be creating in the US." It did not address Trump's statement about the total investment amount or Trump's claims that Gou told it to him in confidence.

"We have not yet announced our investment plans for other sites," Foxconn said in the statement. "We will provide an update as soon as we have finalized those plans."

Some observers said Trump intentionally released the encouraging news about the US$30 billion investment simply to encourage the small-business leaders. Some other opined that he was trying to test the response of Foxconn to the claimed US$30 billion investment or leverage the matter to directly triple his administration's achievement in soliciting overseas foreign investments in the manufacturing industries in the US.

Observers said that it's a sure decision for Gou to set the US as another major market beyond China's and it's foreseeable for Foxconn to make long-term investments in US. Whether Foxconn will duplicate his China success in the US remains to be seen. Neither is it clear how Gou can materialize his "8K+5G ecosystem" for the US. If the company can build a complete supply chain for the display panel industry in the US, it can benefit from lower tariffs and transportation costs, but how to maintain viable operations of the supply chains will be another issue to address, observers said.

Apple begins assembling iPhone 11 in India
      TechCrunch Manish Singh
      TechCrunchJuly 24, 2020

Apple’s contract manufacturing partner Foxconn has started to assemble the current generation of iPhone units -- the iPhone 11 lineup -- in its plant near Chennai, India, a source familiar with the matter told TechCrunch.

A small batch of locally manufactured iPhone 11 units has already shipped to retail stores, but the production yield is currently limited, the person said, requesting anonymity as matters are private. Apple, in general, has ambitions to scale up its local production efforts in India, the person said.

The local production of current iPhone 11 models illustrates Apple’s further commitment to India, the world's second largest smartphone market, as it explores ways to cut its reliance on China, which produces the vast majority of iPhone models today.

Apple’s contract manufacturing partner, Taiwan-based Wistron, first began assembling older iPhone models in 2017. But until now, Apple has not been able to have an assembly partner produce the current generation iPhone model in India.

Wistron, which has locally assembled older iPhone SE, iPhone 6s and iPhone 7 models in the past in its Bangalore plant, currently assembles iPhone XR units in India. Apple discontinued the local production of iPhone SE and iPhone 6s last year, the person said.

Apple's partners and Samsung apply for India's $6.6 billion local smartphone production program
      TechCrunch Manish Singh
      TechCrunchAugust 1, 2020

South Korean giant Samsung, Apple’s contract manufacturing partners Foxconn, Wistron and Pegatron, and Indian smartphone vendors Micromax and Lava among others have applied for India’s $6.6 billion incentive program aimed at boosting the local smartphone manufacturing, New Delhi said on Saturday.

The scheme, called Production-Linked Incentive Scheme, will offer a range of incentives to companies including a 6% financial incentive on additional sales of goods produced locally over five years, with 2019-2020 set as the base year, India’s IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said in a press conference.

22 companies have applied for the incentive program -- that also includes manufacturing of electronics components -- and have agreed to export 60% of their locally produced units outside of India, said Prasad. He said the companies estimate they will produce smartphones and components worth $153 billion during the five-year duration.
