ECB Traders See Historic Half-Point Rate Hike in December

“While the door is not totally shut for a 50 basis point move in July, it would be quite surprising for the ECB to start its hiking cycle with such a big step,” said Jan von Gerich, chief strategist at Nordea Bank Abp.
He expects quarter-point hikes in July, September and December, “but risks are clearly tilted towards the ECB hiking rates at every meeting this year, while also the chance of a 50 basis point rate hike in September has grown.”

ECB likely to get out of negative rates by end-September, Lagarde says

The European Central Bank is likely to raise its deposit rate out of negative territory by the end of September and could lift it further if it sees inflation stabilizing at 2%, ECB President Christine Lagarde said on Monday.
“Based on the current outlook, we are likely to be in a position to exit negative interest rates by the end of the third quarter,” Lagarde said in a blog post published on the ECB’s website.
The ECB’s deposit rate is currently -0.5%, meaning banks are charged to park cash at the central bank.
“If we see inflation stabilising at 2% over the medium term, a progressive further normalisation of interest rates towards the neutral rate will be appropriate,” Lagarde added, even opening the door to raising rates further “if the euro area economy were overheating.”

EZB-Chefin Lagarde stellt Leitzinserhöhung für den Sommer in Aussicht

...

“Stagflation isn’t our baseline scenario presently,” Lagarde told the Slovenian newspaper Delo in an interview published Saturday. “While extraordinarily large uncertainty could cause a slowdown in economic growth accompanied by high inflation, the current situation can’t be compared to that of the 1970s.”

Tackling record euro-zone inflation through monetary policy alone would risk imposing steep costs on society, a senior European Central Bank official said, urging governments to share some of the burden by shielding households from soaring energy prices.
Much of the surge in inflation, which is now more than three times the ECB’s 2% target, is down to geopolitical factors beyond the influence of central bankers, Executive Board member Fabio Panetta said Wednesday in a speech in Cassino, Italy.
He called for a “coherent fiscal- and monetary-policy strategy” as a less damaging way to tame prices, suggesting reductions in indirect taxes or bigger transfers to the most-vulnerable would mitigate the effects of the energy spike.
