Fronteo (Jap.)

http://www.fronteo.com/usa/resources/kibit/

Erweiterte KI nutzen

" AI could add $885bn to the economy by 2030 depending on how we deal with it

Tech

12 hours ago | Melissa Yeo

Increased investment in machine learning technology and Artificial Intelligence could net the Australian economy an increase of up to $US700 billion ($885 billion) in Gross Domestic Product by 2030.

That’s according to the Economist Intelligence Unit, which examined the economic impact of machine learning on Australia, Japan, South Korea, the US and the UK.

The Economist, working with Google, examined different scenarios for tackling the challenges associated with machine learning and AI — and found Australia had the greatest potential for gains among the five countries — depending which path we took.

If Australia invested in productivity by training workers in machine learning skills, GDP could increase by $US500 billion from a forecast baseline of $US1.4 trillion in 2030 to $US1.9 trillion.

“This higher level of economic output can be attributed almost entirely to the positive impact on productivity of public policies to upskill workers and increase complementarity between human labour and machine learning technology,” the report says.

But the rewards were even greater with direct public investment in the technology itself.

Driving capital investment in machine learning technology — via new tax incentives and releasing more government data to national knowledge sharing communities — could add $US700 billion to the 2030 GDP baseline.

“Over the forecast period, an acceleration in this trend, coupled with AI, provides a significant boost to the country’s productivity.”

But without either set of public policies, the outlook was grim.

Advances in machine learning — without investment either up-skilling or infrastructure — would result in the technology replacing workers, rather than increase productivity.

“The impact of this policy inaction on the Australian economy is profoundly negative,” the report says.

Under that scenario, Australia’s GDP would drop back $US200 billion versus the 2030 baseline.

The report defined machine learning as a subfield of Artificial Intelligence that leverages algorithms which learn and optimise from data without being explicitly programmed to accomplish a task with pre-defined rules.

It incorporates a variety of techniques, including neural networks, decision tree learning and support vector machines, among others.

The scenarios are echoed by Innovation and Science Australia (ISA) whose report earlier this year suggested the government’s Digital Economy Strategy (due for release later this year) should position the nation as “a leading nation in the research, development and exploitation of AI and machine learning”.

Seven ASX small caps with exposure to machine learning and AI

Assuming Australia’s policy makers make the right choices, there are several ASX-listed small caps that may give investors exposure to this predicted growth.

Here are seven:

Brainchip (ASX:BRN) is developing a system that mimics the human brain and shipped its first accelerator card to a major European car manufacturer last quarter.

Its technology uses a type of neuromorphic computing which allows the system to be trained instantaneously, to learn autonomously, evolve and associate information just like the human brain.

Earlier this year Brainchip announced a licensing and development deal to jointly develop and deploy casino video analytics in Las Vegas but also are eyeing off deals for application in civil surveillance and visual inspection systems.

Marketing-oriented play OpenDNA (ASX:OPN) is carving a niche in the advertising realm, using AI to feed highly relevant content to consumers by looking at their previous browsing history, preferences and dislikes.

The company helped to launch android smart phones, Netsurfer last month, with a personalised content app Jottr pre-loaded on a predicted 500,000 phones this year.

Flamingo AI (ASX:FGO) is an Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning company providing virtual assistants ROSIE and MAGGIE to solve the business problems of poor customer experience, low online sales conversion rates and high cost of customer service for Financial Services.

Linius Technologies (ASX:LNU) incorporated Microsoft’s artificial intelligence services to its virtual videos in December, to change the way that viewers can search within videos.

Much vaunted logistics tech Yojee (ASX:YOJ) uses the technology to delivery efficiency in global freight logistics.

Both have since announced the addition of blockchain into their service offering as well.

Further, health techs have jumped on the bandwagon with enthusiasm, with roughly 12 using machine learning or AI in some form – Resonance Health (ASX:RHT) even using it to help diagnose blood disorders.

Recent listing Whitehawk (ASX:WHK) uses it to power their cyber-security marketplace while BidEnergy (ASX:BID) uses it similarly for energy bills."

"China's edge on AI comes from its countless dialects and data
AI BOT 12423 aka 张伟 Zhang Wei now

Hi, how are you? I’m new here and I’m a robot.

Can you tell me your name please? This way, I’ll know how to address you. You can also pick a color for your chat box icon if you’d like.

China’s one billion people speak more than 200 dialects, across 23 provinces, in countless accents. Human communication across this country is challenging enough, but imagine the monumental challenge of getting its growing population of AI machines to understand every Chinese individual.

That very challenge has turned out to be a key strength in allowing China to develop what experts are calling the world’s best AI speech-recognition platform. Baidu’s Deep Speech 2 – chosen by the MIT Technology Review as one of last year’s top 10 breakthrough technologies – is emblematic of an explosion in Chinese AI and IoT innovation that will help power what UBS Equity Analyst Sundeep Gantori calls a “fourth industrial revolution.”

China’s highest state body recently announced a plan to make China the world leader in Artificial Intelligence by 2030, creating an industry worth $150 billion – and representing breathtaking investment opportunity. The nation’s research prowess is growing exponentially as brilliant Western-trained scientists return home, and billions of R&D dollars pour into the mission to achieve AI and IoT excellence. Against that backdrop, Gantori sees China enjoying a critical global advantage on its journey to AI leadership; the ability to harness data from a gigantic consumer base eager to embrace new technologies and with little hesitation to share personal information.

AI is the engine of the rocket that takes us to the next frontier, but data is the fuel that powers the engine.

“AI is the engine of the rocket that takes us to the next frontier, but data is the fuel that powers the engine,” he says. “That’s something the Chinese AI-based engines have much more of than what we see in Western societies. We think that today China is in a far better position than in any of the previous industrial revolutions.” In the case of Baidu’s Deep Speech 2 platform, voice data from every corner of China are available for a technology that aims – according to Baidu speech-technology chief Liang Gao – to “change the nature of human-machine interaction.”

China’s biggest companies and regional governments are taking up the 2030 AI challenge with enthusiasm. Tencent, creator of the WeChat app, has launched an AI research lab and begun taking stakes in U.S.-based AI companies. Beyond speech recognition, Baidu is investing heavily in AI technologies to develop next-generation search and driverless vehicles; it announced it would open a new AI lab in collaboration with the government (to add to the one it already has in Silicon Valley). In Industrial IoT (IIoT), China Mobile has established a “cellular IoT open lab,” aiming to connect as many as five billion industrial devices by the end of the decade.

“Because of the new wave of investments and interest from the major Chinese IT companies, AI researchers and research activities are getting an exciting boost,” says Eric Xing, professor of machine learning at Carnegie Mellon University. Meanwhile, local governments are following state direction on AI – with the eastern city of Tianjin creating a $5 billion Artificial Intelligence fund.

According to Gantori, AI is expected to add an economic value of between $800 billion and $1.25 trillion in China by 2030. “We think 2030 is when AI technologies will become mainstream, and Chinese government projections of AI reaching a significant state is realistic around this stage,” he says. “It means that from a company or investment level, that’s the time AI will provide significant opportunities for investors in China. Unlike the previous industrial revolutions, focusing on steam, electricity and technology, in the fourth industrial revolution focusing on AI, China is only slightly behind the U.S. and is significantly closing the gap.”

The rapid strides China has made in catching up in AI leadership are underscored by UBS research showing that the number of AI-related patents filed by Chinese companies is now on a par with the U.S. Gantori cautions that many of these research filings need proof of concept. But a recent report by analytics company Elsevier and the Nikkei gave clear signs of surging quality in Chinese research, showing two institutions – the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Tsinghua University – breaking into the global top 10 of most-quoted AI-related research papers (at third and ninth respectively). Academic citations are widely seen as a gauge of quality research. The Chinese institutions were the only ones from Asia, along with Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University, in a ranking filled with the likes of Microsoft and Google.

The AI rocket taking the world to a new frontier – one of limitless technological possibility – will largely be powered by Chinese innovation. Consumer fields such as speech recognition, driverless vehicles, precision healthcare, online shopping and banking and insurance will be China’s biggest AI and IoT strengths, according to UBS research – and its technologies may permeate our daily lives sooner than we think. “By 2030, AI will be mainstream and ubiquitous,” says Gantori.

China is timing its trajectory perfectly, not only to ride but to drive the AI revolution that will transform the future: “AI gives people the feeling that China and the West are on the same starting line,” says Professor Xing. “So there is a golden chance.” "

"Münchner Sicherheitskonferenz: Anders Fogh Rasmussen fordert weltweites Verbot autonomer Waffen
Kommentare40

Marie-Christine Fischer
Aktualisiert am 16. Februar 2018, 15:47 Uhr

Chancen, Risiken - was überwiegt?

This company is one of my favorites in the Fintech space. Canada’s first completely digital bank maintains a decided advantage over the Big Six banks when it comes to overhead costs. They maintain very conservative bad loan/bad debt ratios (386.76% vs. 286.76% industry average), meaning they’re in great shape when it comes to impairments should the Canadian economy and housing market fall into recession. With total deposit/total liabilities at 90.01% versus the typical 50% standard, VersaBank has plenty of flexibility to take on risker forms of liability to boost return on capital. These are three important reasons why I think organic growth rates will outperform its peers.

This was confirmed recently during Versabank’s Q4 2017 earnings release. The company saw a 46% Increase in Core Cash Earnings YoY, with net income rising 49%. It’s by far the fastest growing Schedule 1 bank in Canada, albeit owing largely to a lower comps reality.

But the thing that stood out during the earnings release was the commentary of Versabank President & CEO, David Taylor, “Our Bank’s model of using advanced technologies to serve niche markets is demonstrating its tremendous power.” Presumably, this means using smart algorithms and artificial intelligence to source the best loan opportunities while optimizing credit risk.

While the big banks are still predominantly using excel spreadsheets and humans to assess capital deployment, Versabank’s streamlined digital 3.0 model has taken the next step. This stock pick isn’t a true ‘AI’ play per se, it’s using AI effectively to eat its competitors lunch.

On a related front, Versabank is also slated to soon open the world’s first blockchain-based safety deposit box. This should help attract crypto asset investors who use platforms such as Coinsquare and Coinsbank.

We wouldn’t be at all surprised if a Big Six suitor looks to acquire Versabank at some point. Not necessarily for its modest earnings, but access to new-age banking technology, credit/loan algorithmic models and soon-to-be digital vault. Versabank’s $165M market cap is only about 8 days of Royal Bank of Canada’s net income in Q4 2017. A takeover (even with hefty premium) would barely cause a ripple in their balance sheet.

Nanotech Security Company NTS (CVE)

Nanotech designs, manufactures and markets nano-optic products that have brand protection and enhancement applications across a wide range of markets including banknotes, tax stamps, secure government documents, commercial branding, and the pharmaceutical industry. This should be a high-demand industry for the foreseeable future.

I like the fact that Nanotech’s flagship product, KolourOptik security platform, requires patented algorithms, skilled personnel, expensive equipment and class 1 clean rooms to effectively fabricate master shims. The technology isn’t something that can be replicated and repackaged very easily. There’s practically an unlimited amount of use cases in real world applications where counter-proof requirements are needed.

Be forewarned, this is a speculative play. The stock has been languishing of late and expectations of a large contract with the Indian government (which hasn’t materialized) is weighing down sentiment. This research isn’t advanced enough to make a comparative judgement against competitor applications, both is scope and scale.

Still, Nanotech Security Company is worth a look for those with ample speculative capital and further due diligence to further drill into the details.

"Your virtual doctor will see you now: AI app as accurate as doctors in 80% of primary care diseases

Babylon Health, a smartphone app powered by artificial intelligence, is making online diagnoses and has cut waiting times from two weeks to two hours – with the added convenience of remote consultations
By Gary Finnegan
Screenshots of Babylon iPhone app

A smartphone app introduced on a pilot basis in November is mining health data to make online diagnoses and has dramatically reduced the time patients in London wait for a consultation with a general practitioner (GP) by offering 24-hour access to a doctor via a video link.

Babylon Health, the company that developed the app says it means better access to GPs, improving health outcomes and reducing pressure on emergency services. The average waiting time for a virtual GP appointment is just over two hours for patients using its service GP at Hand, compared to a national average of approximately two weeks.

Babylon claims to have the widest reach of any AI diagnostic app. The company has raised more than €48 million to fund development of its system and in addition to a contract with the National Health Service (NHS) to deliver services in London, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is supporting its implementation in Rwanda, in a move designed to illustrate how technology can improve access to healthcare in low income countries.

The company was founded by former investment banker Ali Parsa CEO, who believes artificial intelligence (AI) will become a routine feature of healthcare everywhere. “It will soon be seen as ignorant, negligent and maybe even criminal to diagnose disease without using AI,” said Parsa.

If all patients had access to the Babylon system, outcomes would be less dependent on medical opinion and standards would rise for all, he said.

Show me where it hurts

The Babylon app collects details of a patient’s symptoms, which it then compares with millions of data points from other patients and research papers, to make a diagnosis and offer treatment advice.

Patients can touch an on-screen diagram of the human body to show where they feel pain, rate the severity of symptoms, and explain how long they have felt this way. Using this and the patient’s medical history, the app then suggests anything from an urgent hospital visit to resting at home.

The system can connect patients to a doctor by video if they want to speak to a human expert. Consultations are shorter than a typical visit to the clinic as the doctor is able to access the information patients have given the app, in advance of talking to them.

Where a prescription is needed, this is sent electronically. Medicines can be delivered or collected at a nearby pharmacy.

Individuals can subscribe to the app privately and some insurers provide it to their customers. However, the big breakthrough and most intense scrutiny has come since the NHS began encouraging patients to use the app.

While GP at Hand is still a pilot project linked to a handful of GP surgeries, many see it as the future of care. Charles Alessi, senior advisor at Public Health England, said the system offers a primary care service that, “Helps people stay healthy, as well as looking after them when they are sick”.

GP Howard Freeman said, “GP at Hand is a window onto what the NHS of the future will look like. When NHS GPs embrace Babylon technology to make life better for their patients, the sky is the limit.”

Replacing telephone hotline

In January 2017 the NHS started to roll out a Babylon-based app to patients in eight north London boroughs who might otherwise call the NHS’s 111 telephone helpline, which provides advice and helps to triage patients remotely.

“Forty per cent of patients who use the [Babylon] diagnostic service don’t go to the doctor,” said Parsa. “We also use predictive analytics to calculate the risk of developing disease or complications from diseases such as diabetes. We can help people to stay well.”

As the app continues to sign up thousands of patients per week and replace many tasks performed by doctors, there are questions about its accuracy and the impact on general practice.

Margaret McCartney, GP and a columnist in the British Medical Journal, said more evidence is needed to ensure the safety and accuracy of AI diagnostics.

There have also been accusations of cherry picking. Digital services are popular among younger, healthier people, leaving GPs to handle only older, sicker patients. Helen Stokes-Lampard, Chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners has said this threatens the viability of general practice.

Babylon also found itself at the centre of controversy last year when it sought to block the release of a 2017 inspection by the UK’s Care Quality Commission (CQC), which found that in some areas the service, “Was not providing safe care in accordance with the relevant regulations.”

This was in contrast to a 2016 CQC report, which praised the service, declaring it safe and effective.

But while the 2017 report was broadly positive, it found fault with Babylon’s policies on sharing patient information with their registered GP and the use of prescribed medicines for conditions outside the terms of a drug’s license.

Babylon issued detailed responses to the report, arguing that the CQC frequently finds fault with digital and innovative health technologies. It noted that the criticisms related only to instances where Babylon was not the main care provider and did not apply to the GP at Hand service where Babylon effectively becomes the patient’s registered doctor.

The company challenged the CQC report in court to protect its reputation but succeeded only in attracting negative attention. Babylon eventually dropped its challenge, agreeing to pay the regulator’s legal costs of £11,000.

Digital disruption

One of the biggest questions raised by the UK’s embrace of digital technologies is what the effect will be on the jobs of healthcare professionals.

According to Babylon, AI is currently good enough to manage 80 per cent of primary care diseases as well as a doctor would. With the speed and accuracy of AI improving exponentially the technology will soon take over even more tasks, particularly in predicting and diagnosing illness, and identifying the best treatment option.

“By the end of the year, we will be an order of magnitude more accurate than any human doctor,” said Parsa. “No human brain can analyse this amount of data.”

But says Parsa, doctors will not be redundant. Rather they will play to their strengths and leave information-based tasks to machines. “We will make our doctors more human, and let computers do the computing,” he said."

AI experts say SOME advances should be kept secret
Crooks, spies, and despots could make nefarious use of AI originally built for good.
The news: Researchers and policymakers published a report, arguing that the proliferation of new AI technology must be kept out of the hands of the maleficent.
Near threats: The report imagines Black Mirror-style futures where AI powers new forms of cybercrime, fake news, political disruption, and even physical attacks.
Now what? The report urges scientists to share AI findings widely only when risks are understood, and suggests some be kept secret. Our Will Knight dives deeper.

The WA company that’s every brickie’s worst nightmare is set for a defining year. Since its formation the product, a one-armed automatic robot bricklayer, has been slowly kicking goals.

And in 2017 it kicked some bombs between the big sticks. The company penned an MOU with Caterpillar in June, signed a non-binding deal to supply about 100 home-building robots to Saudi Arabia in August and on the back of that share price bump raised $35 million in November.

Just this week it announced the formation of an advisory committee to help it expand and launch a commercial version of its robot. But now it comes to crunch period: locking down contracts and partners, constructing the robot itself and bloody selling the thing.

The commercial bricklaying robot is expected to cost about $2 million when it goes into full production in 2019. But there is one constant in all of this: more people need more homes. Kinda makes sense that a robot would do it.

"How can AI transform the healthcare sector, in UAE???????????????????????????????????
16 February 2018

Healthcare
Insight
Technology

AI has led to drastic changes across sectors. In the healthcare sector, medical advances include breakthrough technologies such as:

- 3D printing to create human body parts, reproduce blood vessels and form skin cells
- Artificial eyes that enable patients to regain vision
- Implanted remote controlled devices that send electrical pulses to reduce the impact of headaches
- Artificial pancreas that measure blood glucose using a sensor and deliver appropriate amounts of insulin

On one hand, WHO has reported that the prevalence of chronic disease is expected to rise by 57% by 2020. On the other hand, advancements in detecting and diagnosing diseases are expected to minimize the cost of treating chronic diseases. These innovative technologies include genomics, proteomics, cell biology, stem cell and organ therapy, and minimally invasive and robotic surgery. Most importantly, majority of these new advancements are likely to be fuelled by Artificial Intelligence (AI).

AI in the global healthcare market

AI is revolutionizing the healthcare industry at lightning speed. Previously, technology in healthcare was limited to algorithms and tools to assist humans. Now, however, AI can augment human activity. From imaging to diagnosis, AI is able to do it all. Although this provides a wealth of opportunities, AI advancements require large investments. Research by Accenture does, however, suggest that the latter will generate annual savings of $150 billion for the US healthcare industry by 2026.

As per a 2016 study by Frost & Sullivan, the market for AI in healthcare is projected to reach $6.6 billion by 2021, representing a 40% compound annual growth rate. The report goes on to say that clinical support from AI will strengthen medical imaging diagnosis processes and using AI solutions for hospital workflows will enhance patient care delivery. Frost & Sullivan also reports that AI has the potential to improve outcomes by 30 to 40 percent while reducing treatment costs by as much as 50%. In addition, PwC research has estimated savings of up to 172 billion euros over the next 10 years in prevention of childhood obesity, diagnosis of dementia and diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer through AI adoption in the healthcare sector.

The rapid growth of healthcare AI is apparent when comparing investment in the industry over the years. In 2011, less than 10 healthcare start-ups received major investment. In 2016, this number rose to almost 70. The latter comes as no surprise as CB Insights regards healthcare as the most popular area of investment within AI. The figures are likely to increase as the industry continues to grow with the help of research and innovation.

Adoption of AI in UAE’s healthcare sector

UAE stands at the forefront of AI ahttp://valustrat.com/wp-content/uploads/AI-Healthcare-05-768… and is an avid believer in AI-based economy. The country recently launched their first AI strategy termed “UAE Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2031” – the first of its kind in the region. The strategy aims to bring AI tools and technology to various sectors including healthcare. The official website mentions that AI will be used to minimise chronic and dangerous diseases.

PwC research suggests that two-thirds of the Middle East would be open to the idea of replacing human doctors with AI. The report also states that an insufficient workforce and a young population make the Middle East the ideal region for AI and robotics.

Keeping in line with the UAE’s AI strategy, Dubai Health Authority (DHA) is expected to launch the first radiology AI algorithm as part of Dubai Health Strategy 2021. The initiative will expedite the processing time for chest x-ray scans which are required for those seeking residency in the country.

AI will REdefine healthcare

As the healthcare industry undergoes a metamorphosis, there are several ways in which AI can be incorporated:

1) Robotic surgery

Robot-assisted surgery offers the greatest value potential in AI-based healthcare. Cognitive robotics can integrate information from pre-op medical records with real-time operating metrics to physically guide and enhance the physician’s instrument precision. The technology creates a database of surgical data and improves techniques, allowing it to improve outcomes. Machine learning will continue to improve results over time.

Mazor Robotics, based in the US, uses Artificial Intelligence to aid both minimally invasive surgical operations and complex surgery. Using their technology, a patient’s CT scan is uploaded onto a 3D computerized planning system to indicate where a surgeon should place implants—all before the patient even arrives. Mazor’s spinal surgery robot arm guides an orthopaedic surgeon’s instruments, allowing high precision.

2) Disease identification

Medical Artificial Intelligence breakthroughs have led to improved accuracy in the early detection of life-threatening diseases such as cancer. The American Cancer Society reports that 12.1 million mammograms are performed annually in the US, but a large percentage of these mammograms produce false results, with 20 percent of healthy women being told they have cancer. AI enables the review and translation of mammograms 30 times faster with 99% accuracy, making the procedure more reliable. Furthermore, AI powered consumer wearables and other medical devices are also being applied to oversee early-stage heart disease, enabling doctors and other caregivers to better monitor and detect potentially life-threatening illnesses at earlier stages. CardioDiagnostics has developed a device that is able to remotely monitor heart irregularities of the wearer and is used to improve cardiac monitoring and rhythm management.

Artificial Intelligence is also identified as a huge priority for tech giant Intel, as the company is active in many areas as of healthcare ranging from predictive clinical analytics to imaging Intel helped Sharp HealthCare in San Diego build a predictive model with 80 percent predictability of patient decline within an hour of an event happening. This advance notice enables strategically placed medical emergency teams to be located at key areas in hospitals in order to intervene before an event becomes life-threatening.

3) AI chatbot

Hospitals and clinics require a great deal of resources to manage patient inquiries via phone, e-mail, or live chat. However, automated AI chatbots can enable these organizations to save money and improve efficiency. Research suggests that by 2022, chatbots could save organizations $8 billion per year globally.

In April 2017, UK-based company Babylon Health raised close to $60 million. The company developed an app that assesses health with the help of an AI chatbot on your smartphone, after which it arranges virtual consultations with doctors if necessary. Around the same time, Berlin-based digital health startup Ada announced its entrance into the AI chatbot space.

AI chatbots in healthcare have been helping consumers select a benefit plan, providing customer service responses, helping triage symptoms, and guiding consumers to resources.

4) Data analytics powered decisions

A study by TechEmergence found that over 50% of respondents believe that “AI will be ubiquitous in healthcare by 2025.” The latter seems logical, considering that the healthcare industry collects vast amount of data which is challenging for physicians to assess. AI, however, can analyse large amounts of data efficiently using advanced algorithms to suggest treatment options. The more data points the technology has to work with, such as patient history, past treatment options, and available medications, the better conclusions it can make.

Google has launched an initiative called DeepMind Health, which creates partnerships between doctors, researchers and patients to identify and solve real healthcare problems. The technology utilises machine learning and systems neuroscience to build algorithms capable of mimicking the human brain. Data Diagnostics’ Quanum solution is another example that aims to assist decision making through AI-driven data analytics. Their objective is to help healthcare professionals achieve better clinical and financial outcomes, by providing the right data at the right point (point of care). Their system crawl data, analyses and projects outcomes that helps professionals identify gaps in quality, optimize test utilization, and help prevent patients’ conditions from worsening. Similarly, Microsoft is working on InnerEye – AI-powered computer vision designed to dramatically improve the productivity of radiologists.

5) Efficiency in drug research

The right medication makes a lot of difference for curing a disease, be it a viral infection or a chronic disease – the road to recovery is not as long as the road to discover the right medication. According to the

Drug research and discovery is a recent yet important application of AI in the healthcare sector. Directing the latest advances in Artificial Intelligence to streamline the drug discovery and drug repurposing processes possesses the ability to reduce both the time to market for new drugs and their costs. Pharma.AI, the Pharmaceutical Artificial Intelligence division of bioinformatics company Insilico Medicine, used AI was u to scan existing medicines that could be redesigned to fight Ebola. In one day, the program found two medications capable of fighting Ebola – as opposed to months or years that would be required for conventional research.

However, medical research is not limited to finding new drugs to fight disease. An important part of medical research studies the disease itself, in order to help prevent it from spreading further. Canadian start-up Meta uses AI to quickly read and comprehend scientific papers and then provide insights to researchers.

6) Virtual assistants

Virtual nursing assistants provide another avenue for application of AI in healthcare. AI solutions remotely assess a patient’s symptoms and deliver alerts to clinicians only when patient care is needed, reducing unnecessary hospital visits, and thereby lessening the burden on medical professionals. The latter saves 20 percent of a nurse’s time. Nuance Communications unveiled an artificial virtual assistant specifically for patients and healthcare providers. The company has built artificial intelligence virtual assistants for consumer and automotive brands including American Airlines, Amtrak, Audi, Barclay’s, BMW, Citi, Delta, Domino’s, FedEx, Ford, and GM.

Nuance’s state-of-the-art healthcare virtual assistant uses voice recognition technology, voice biometrics and text-to-speech, Electronic Health Record (HER) integrations and strategic health IT relationships to create a smart speaker designed specifically for healthcare cases.

7) Effective treatment

AI is enabling clinicians take a more comprehensive approach for disease management, better coordinate care plans and help patients to better manage and comply with their long-term treatment programmes. AiCure has created an application to monitor patients with long-term conditions and help them manage medication intake. The application uses visual recognition to identify the patient’s face, the medication they are taking, and confirm ingestion. The data is then sent back to the care provider or to a pharmaceutical company conducting a clinical trial. Another example is of a nursing-care robot, RoBear, that can lift and move patients in and out of bed into wheelchair, help those who need assistance to stand, and even turn patients in bed to prevent bedsores. Such transformation in delivery of patient care services helps in increasing the effectiveness of the treatment."

Covered in our recent article “Watch for These 8 AI Startups Doing Computer Vision”, Prophesee’s technology provides an output equivalent to more than 10,000 frames per second, even in extreme lighting conditions, and manages to do this with high power efficiency and less data processing. That’s 10-100X better than the human eye, depending on who you ask. This efficiency gain is due to how their AI processes the images it sees. It looks only at changes, as opposed to taking thousands of pictures and comparing each one. Use cases include the following:

Using this technology, product designers can add multiple sensors without losing battery life and computational power, making Prophesee an ideal platform for connected, autonomous, and mobile applications in fields like automotive, robotics or industrial automation. Prophesee is currently evaluating the idea of implementing the same event-driven approach to radar and LiDAR outputs as well. "

- The huge state investment is in stark contrast to America’s current AI policies.
The news: The UK has announced that it’s pouring $1.4 billion into British AI. Meanwhile, the European Commission has said that it wants to build a network of hundreds of research centers specializing in machine learning and robotics.
Why it matters: Europe lags America and China in building AI. The new moves are an attempt to play catch up—by training new researchers, retaining top talent, and creating an environment in which machine learning startups can prosper.
America, take note: Despite being a leader in the field, the US currently lacks formal policies to help foster AI research. There’s plenty it could do to change that. -

- AI’s leading countries are unlikely to let another player muscle in on their turf.
The plan: A task force established by the Indian government has released a report on artificial intelligence that calls for the country to boost investment and focus on deploying the technology in areas including manufacturing and health care.
The challenge: India is on course to become the third-largest economy (by GDP) within the next few years. But the country may find it hard to kick-start its own AI revolution. India is playing catch-up with China and the West in terms of technology, research prowess, investment, and—crucially—data.
Power balance: The countries that already hold an AI advantage are keen to export the technology—and use data from users in developing nations to increase their lead. This could exacerbate international power dynamics, separating countries into the AI haves and have-nots. -

"Australian chief scientist Alan Finkel says artificial intelligence (AI) providers should earn the public’s trust by agreeing to a set of ethical standards.

Dr Finkel suggests a system similar to the Fairtrade coffee certification should would apply to AI organisations and products.

Such a policy could impact the two dozen or so ASX stocks involved with Artificial Intelligence.

>> Such Scroll down for a list of ASX stocks with exposure to AI

“The word at the moment in the tech sectors is responsible — but you have to ask who is defining or auditing the standards and are they making the public feeling any better,” Dr Finkel asked at a Committee for Economic Development of Australia forum in Sydney on Friday.

Dr Finkel proposed a “Turing Certificate” — named in honour of Alan Turing, one of the early developers of computer science.

AI makers would apply for certification. Once they met the auditing requirements they could display the Turing Stamp.

“We would expect a government department to vet the provider of a service that, for example, replaced social workers with algorithms that predict the likelihood that a particular child will be violent,” Dr Finkel said.

“But how many consumers are going to have the knowledge or the time to individually vet every AI they encounter?

“What we need is an agreed standard and a clear seal — so that we don’t need expert knowledge to choose a product and company.”

The proposed standard comes after Google’s latest release of Duplex — software that can make phone calls and appointments on behalf of users.

After its release last week questions were raised about the ethics of a robot “deceiving” people into thinking they were speaking to a human.

To date there is no world standard in AI ethics.

" China wants to be the world leader in blockchain, AI and Internet of Things

Tech

12 hours ago | David Higgins

China’s president Xi Jinping has highlighted blockchain, artificial intelligence and Internet of Things as examples of technologies where he wants the Asian economic powerhouse to lift its game.

“A new generation of technology represented by artificial intelligence, quantum information, mobile communications, internet of things and blockchain is accelerating breakthrough applications,” President Xi Jinping said at a science conference this week, according to a Google translation.

China has a ban on cryptocurrency exchanges and Initial Coin Offerings — but has been bullish on the underlying “blockchain” technology which is an increasingly popular way to secure digital transactions.

China identified blockchain as a priority as far back as 2016, when it was written into the country’s 13th Five-Year Plan.

>> Scroll down for list of ASX stocks that offer exposure to blockchain

China’s People’s Daily newspaper has even started a dedicated section to covering news of blockchain.

“According to the US World Intellectual Property Patent Organisation, more than half of the world’s blockchain patent applications came from China last year,” the People’s Daily reported this week.

The People’s Daily — China’s biggest newspaper group — is the mouth piece of the Communist Party.

In a speech earlier this week at an annual academic conference hosted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, President Xi Jinping emphasised the need for China to focus on technological development to become a global centre of science and innovation.

President Xi Jinping also highlighted life sciences areas such “synthetic biology, gene editing, brain science and regenerative medicine”.

He told the audience there were “still some outstanding problems that need to be resolved urgently in the science and technology field in our country”, according to a Google translation.

There were “many problems in China’s science and technology in terms of field of vision, innovation capability, resource allocation, and institutional policies.

“Enterprises do not pay enough attention to basic research” and “major original results are lacking,” he said.

“If China is to flourish and rejuvenate, it must vigorously develop science and technology and strive to become the world’s major scientific center and innovative highland.

“We are closer to the goal of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation than at any time in history.

“We need to build a powerful world of science and technology more than any other time in history.”

Earlier this week Google Australia’s boss Jason Pellegrino warned Australian business this week they needed to lift their investment in technology such as Artificial Intelligence or risk getting left behind.

‘China’s Google’ releases its first AI chip

Baidu unveiled an artificial intelligence chip called Kunlun during its annual Baidu Create event on Tuesday. The company joins a raft of other Chinese firms in designing hardware tailored for machine learning.
Seven years: Kunlun is optimized for AI tasks including voice recognition, natural language processing, image recognition, and autonomous driving. The new design is 30 times faster than Baidu’s original FPGA-based processor from 2011, but the company says it’s not ready to begin mass producing it yet.
AI EVERYwhere: The company’s AI capabilities are developing fast. Its driverless minibuses will soon be deployed on power plant campuses in China. EasyDL, a deep-learning tool, is enabling doctors to DIY diagnostic aids such as more efficient parasite screening.
The chip on China’s shoulder: Customized hardware will help Baidu scale up its AI capabilities at lower cost. This is, perhaps, the latest sign that the escalating trade tensions with the US are galvanizing China’s interest in fundamental technology.

DeepMind’s AI agents are better than humans, @being your teammate

The Alphabet-owned company has developed a way for AI programs to team up effectively in a simple video game.
Team players: Researchers at DeepMind trained teams of AI agents to play a game of capture the flag in a modified version of the first-person shooter Quake III Arena. Teamwork is extremely difficult to develop effectively in AI programs, because it involves dealing with a complex and ever-changing situation. DeepMind’s agents were able to collaborate with human players, though—and the players say the programs are better teammates than most people.
Winning formula: The researchers used an algorithm that trains a host of agents in parallel using reinforcement learning, a machine-learning technique modeled on the way animals learn.
Game changing: It’s a promising advance, because AI programs will need to work nicely with each other. But the world in which these programs operate is incredibly simple. Demonstrating teamwork in the real world will be a lot more challenging.

"Advanced Artificial Intelligence Could Run The World Better Than Humans Ever Could
Adobe Stock/NASA/Victor Tangermann
by Dan Robitzski August 29, 2018 Artificial Intelligence

There are fears that tend to come up when people talk about futuristic artificial intelligence — say, one that could teach itself to learn and become more advanced than anything we humans might be able to comprehend. In the wrong hands, perhaps even on its own, such an advanced algorithm might dominate the world’s governments and militaries, impart Orwellian levels of surveillance, manipulation, and social control over societies, and perhaps even control entire battlefields of autonomous lethal weapons such as military drones.

But some artificial intelligence experts don’t think those fears are well-founded. In fact, highly-advanced artificial intelligence could be better at managing the world than humans have been. These fears themselves are the real danger, because they may hold us back from making that potential a reality.

“Maybe not achieving AI is the danger for humanity,” Tomas Mikolov, a research scientist for Facebook AI, said at The Joint Multi-Conference on Human-Level Artificial Intelligence, organized by GoodAI, in Prague on Saturday.
"“Maybe not achieving AI is the danger for humanity.”"

As a species, Mikolov explained, humans are pretty terrible at making choices that are good for us in the long term. People have carved away rainforests and other ecosystems to harvest raw materials, unaware of (or uninterested in) how they were contributing to the slow, maybe-irreversible degradation of the planet overall.

But a sophisticated artificial intelligence system might be able to protect humanity from its own shortsightedness.

“We as humans are very bad at making predictions of what will happen in some distant timeline, maybe 20 to 30 years from now,” Mikolov added. “Maybe making AI that is much smarter than our own, in some sort of symbiotic relationship, can help us avoid some future disasters.”

Granted, Mikolov may be in the minority in thinking a superior AI entity would be benevolent. Throughout the conference, many other speakers expressed these common fears, mostly about AI used for dangerous purposes or misused by malicious human actors. And we shouldn’t laugh off or downplay those concerns.

We don’t know for sure whether it will ever be possible to create artificial general intelligence, often considered the holy grail of sophisticated AI that’s capable of doing pretty much any cognitive task humans can, maybe even doing it better.

The future of advanced artificial intelligence is promising, but it comes with a lot of ethical questions. We probably don’t know all the questions we’ll have to answer yet.

But most of the panelists at the HLAI conference agreed that we still need to decide on the rules before we need them. The time to create international agreements, ethics boards, and regulatory bodies across governments, private companies, and academia? It’s now. Putting these institutions and protocols in place would reduce the odds that a hostile government, unwitting researcher, or even a cackling mad scientist would unleash a malicious AI system or otherwise weaponize advanced algorithms. And if something nasty did get out there, then these systems would ensure we’d have ways to handle it.

With these rules and safeguards in place, we will be much more likely to usher in a future in advanced AI systems live harmoniously with us, or perhaps even save us from ourselves.

" Artificial Intelligence will be used in 70pc of businesses by 2030: McKinsey

Tech

2 hours ago | Daniel Paproth

Artificial intelligence has the potential to deliver global economic activity of about $13 trillion by 2030, a new report says — giving investors in ASX-listed AI stocks a reason to smile.

‘Notes from the frontier: Modeling the impact of AI on the world economy’ is a new report from McKinsey & Company look at the future impact AI will have on our lives and the way we do business.

It finds that AI has a huge potential to contribute to global economic activity (while warning that adoption of AI could widen gaps among countries, companies and workers).

>> Scroll down for a table of ASX stocks with exposure to AI — and their recent performance

McKinsey estimates that by 2030 some 70 per cent of companies might have adopted at least one type of AI technology somewhere in their business.

That’s good news for the 30 or so ASX stocks who have some form of exposure to the technology, whether it be futuristic computer chips, makers of AI apps or companies leveraging AI to improve efficiency.

But investors have to choose carefully.

On average, ASX AI stocks are up about 30 per cent — thanks mainly to a small number that have made big gains. BidEnergy, 4DS Memory, Resapp Health, LiveTiles and Weebit Nano have made gains of more than 100 per cent over the past year.

But individually, the majority of stocks in our list are down year-on-year.

Some 17 of the 28 companies have witnessed downturns in their share price over the past year.

BidEnergy (ASX:BID), which sells an automated system that monitors a business’s energy spending, is up a whopping 504 per cent, hitting 14.5c on Friday.
BidEnergy shares (ASX:BID) on a tear over the past year.

4DS Memory (ASX:4DS) and Weebit Nano (ASX:WBT), both of which are working on ReRAM, an emerging technology that combines the advantages of RAM and Flash, are up 265 per cent and 142 per cent year-on-year respectively.

Innovative software company LiveTiles (ASX:LVT) is up 190 per cent while Resapp Health (ASX:RAP), which uses AI to help diagnose respiratory disease, is up 240 per cent.

Marc Kennis, founder of TMT Analytics, says companies with exposure to artificial intelligence remain a good investment.

“Looking at the semiconductor companies alone like Weebit Nano or BrainChip we’ve seen a lot of growth,” he said.

“You need to be patient but if you invest early on you’ve got time to let it play out and these technologies aren’t going anywhere.”

Mr Kennis said AI was a broad spectre which could be broken into two separate segments: companies working on AI-enabled software that uses supervised learning, and companies working on hardware that can be trained without supervision.

“There is a place for both, certainly, and software will be mainstream for a long time to come – it is what 99.9 per cent of AI companies are working with,” he said.

“But hardware-based AI is really interesting and something I think we are going to see a lot more of in the near future.”

Irakli Beridze, Head of the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, UNICRI, United Nations
At the moment, there is absolutely no indication that we are anywhere near AGI. And no one can say with any kind of authority or conviction that this would happen within a certain time frame. Or even worse, no one can say this can even happen period. We may never have AGI, so we need to take that into account when we are discussing anything.

Seán Ó hÉigeartaigh, Executive Director of the Cambridge Center for the Study of Existential Risk
There’s still a lot of work to be done; there are still many things we don’t understand. Given we have this understanding, maybe it’s possible that it happens within 50 years.

John Langford, Principal Researcher at Microsoft AI
I think we should enjoy the technology while it advances. We should be looking out for where to go in the future. But on the other hand, it’s not like we have human-level AI right now and I don’t think it’s going to happen very quickly. I think that if I’m lucky it’ll happen in my lifetime.

A worm’s level of intelligence is actually pretty doable. If you try to look at vision and planning, this is kind of narrowly doable. The integration of planning and learning, planning as its own thing is pretty well solved. But planning in a way which works with [machine learning] is not very well solved.

Marek Rosa, CEO and CTO at GoodAI
I think we are almost there. I am not predicting we will have general AI in three years, 30 years. But I am confident it can happen any day.

Ben Goertzel, CEO at SingularityNET and Chief Scientist at Hanson Robotics
I don’t think:mad::mad::mad: we need fundamentally new algorithms. I think we do need to connect our algorithms in different ways than we do now. If I’m right, then we already have the core algorithms that we need… I believe we are less than ten years from creating human-level AI.

Hava Siegelmann, Program Manager at DARPA
I don’t think we’re almost there in the technology for General AI. I think general AI is almost a branding for a very general idea. Lifelong learning is an example of that — it’s a very particular type of AI. We know the theoretical foundation of that already, we know how nature does it, and it’s very well defined. There is a very clear direction, there is a metric. I think we can reach it in a close time.

" These technologies will shape the future, says top global business forum

Tech

1 hour ago | Rachel Williamson

Artificial Intelligence, high-speed mobile internet, big data analytics and cloud technology are the four key technologies that will shape the world over the next four years says the top global business forum.

A new report from the World Economic Forum (WEF), The Future of Jobs Report 2018, says the years between now and 2022 will be a hotbed for high-tech investment by companies across every industry.

While the report finds that the “Fourth Industrial Revolution” will create more new jobs than it destroys, artificial intelligence will have a significant impact in the next four years.

In 2018 about 29 per cent of total “task hours” are performed by machines in 12 industries studied by the WEF.

By 2022 the average is expected to shift to 42 per cent performed by machines.

The role of AI and machine learning will accelerate even faster in some areas of business.

“For example, by 2022, 62 per cent of organisation’s information and data processing and information search and transmission tasks will be performed by machines compared to 46 per cent today,” the report says.

“Even those work tasks that have thus far remained overwhelmingly human — communicating and interacting (23%); coordinating, developing, managing and advising (20%); as well as reasoning and decisionmaking (18%) — will begin to be automated (30%, 29%, and 27% respectively).”

That’s expected to present big opportunities for tech stocks — particularly ASX stocks with exposure to AI and its cousin machine learning which is based on big data analytics.

There are about 28 ASX small caps that offer exposure to AI, be it in health such as cough diagnosis app maker ResApp (ASX:RAP), WhiteHawk’s (ASX:WHK) cybersecurity platform, or Weebit Nano’s (ASX:WBT) pure-play tech product of next-generation memory chips needed to power demanding AI applications.

>>Scroll down for a table of the ASX’s AI-exposed small caps.

Here are six key predictions from the WEF report:

1. Adoption and investment in technologies like AI, virtual and augmented reality, and machine learning will be almost ubiquitous; 85 per cent of businesses say they’ll be using the latter by 2022.

2. Robotic drones and non-humanoid land robots will graduate from high-tech military applications to everyday industries. More than a third of businesses say they will invest in roboticised machinery.

3. Robots and AI will slash jobs — as many as an estimated 75 million — but these will be replaced by 133 million new roles.

4. Machines won’t stop at taking over mundane takes. They will also address complex tasks such as reasoning and decision-making, and there will be a shift in the human-machine “frontier” on existing jobs.

5. New jobs will arise in expected and unexpected areas. Rising jobs include data analysts and robotics engineers, but distinctly ‘human’ roles such as customer services workers, organisational specialists and trainers will also be in demand as companies look to provide human faces for customers.

6. Because of rapid technological changes, the skills needed to do many jobs will change quickly leaving the vast majority of the workforce in need of retraining or up-skilling. The report estimates a 42 per cent shift in the average skill set needed by 2022. Most companies expect to hire new staff with all the skills they need rather than retrain their existing staff.

For ASX tech investors these forecasts could mean opportunity for education providers specialising in professional development, network providers, cloud software makers and drone builders in the next few years.

Here are some examples:

iCollege (ASX:ICT), Academies Australasia (ASX:AKG), and Navitas (ASX:NVT) offer up-skilling education. iCollege in particular is settling into an Asia-focused strategy with partners in India and China to offer professional development, and an oil and gas further education arm in Singapore.

5G Networks (ASX:5GN) provides broadband services to businesses by establishing its own fibre and wireless infrastructure to do so, as is rival Superloop (ASX:SLC). Spirit Telecom (ASX:ST1) is taking a slightly different route by establishing a wireless line-of-sight and fibre alternative for super fast internet to multi-dwelling units.

Tapping the robotics theme, the ASX has a rising number of candidates from drone makers Aquabotix (ASX:UUV) and Department 13 (ASX:D13) to house maker Fastbricks (ASX:FBR) and “flying car” wannabe Mobilicom (ASX:MOB).

And showing just how in demand robots are, last year investors could buy into a ‘robotic surgeons’ company called Life Healthcare, which said hospitals were increasingly using robots for precision operations.

By May this year they were gone — snaffled up by Australian private equity company Pacific Equity Partners.

Sorry muss mich korrigieren.

Also deren Webseite spricht mich schonmal an.

Ich habe gelesen, TSLA soll ADAS-mässig an was Neuem arbeiten?

Vom Fach naja so halbwegs.

The real AI dangers to watch out for, in 2019

Rather than worrying about the distant prospect of super-intelligent machines, we’d be better off focusing on the hazards AI can cause in the here and now. Even the smartest algorithms can misbehave or have dire consequences if carelessly applied, Will Knight and Karen Hao write.
www.technologyreview.com/s/612689/never-mind-killer-robotshe…
Self-crashing cars: The huge promise of self-driving cars means regulators have had a hands-off approach so far. But an easily avoidable fatal accident involving an Uber vehicle last March is a reminder of the risks, and another serious accident in 2019 could shift opinion.

And…That’s far from all. The spread of face recognition offers unparalleled surveillance opportunities. It’s becoming ever easier to create “deepfake” video clips using AI. And bias is too often baked into AI systems themselves—an issue the industry seems to be finally waking up to.

https://www.all-electronics.de/neuromorphe-rechner-als-naech…

"Dept of national strategies

Understanding China's national strategy on AI. We’ve long pointed out that China views dominance in AI as crucial for national security. The country is moving fast to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers. While there is a burgeoning awakening that there may be an arms race (and so some understanding that arms control protocols may be need), that won’t stop them from putting pedal to the metal. Semiconductors will play a key part in the future focus of China’s national AI strategy but so are the declared “National AI Champions”: Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent, iFlytek, and SenseTime. (Six of the world’s eleven AI unicorns are Chinese.)

Europe continues to lag behind China and the US in AI, suggests a detailed study by McKinsey. Weaker than the US on core research, patents, startup formation and venture capital investments, and smaller in scale with less co-ordinated state focus than China. (My comment: Europe's picture is spotty. Some governments, like France and the UK have put together explicit AI plans. The UK also has players right across the stack, from Graphcore in chips to Prowler (odd choice of name!) in advanced algorithms. The Nordics have a strong entrepreneurial basis and well-educated, resilient populations. So, yes, Europe is a bit of a plum pudding.)

Donald Trump, the President of the US, signed an Executive Order on artificial intelligence. Light on specifics, heavy on bombast, was one conclusion.

Elsewhere: Ant Financial, the massive Chinese financial services player that spun out of Alibaba, is acquiring the UK’s WorldFirst, in its biggest overseas expansion deal. (Ant Financial is an AI-driven financial services firm without compare. To get a flavour of it, watch this presentation by Alan Qi, their chief data scientist, on the EV stage at the CogX Festival last year.)
Dept of artificial intelligence

OpenAI, a private research group, demonstrated GPT2, an AI text generator, which the group reckoned was too dangerous to be released publicly. Some of the text generated can seem quite realistic. The following was created by GPT2. It is pretty good:

The first thing that strikes you about GPT2 is its simplicity. First, the system is built on unsupervised learning from text, which essentially means the software is trained to spot instances of certain words that, when paired with other words, trigger the system to give it a human review of them. The system also learns through example and repetition, but does not have the capability to recognize itself.

Yes, the above was generated by a machine. For another example, read this realistic article about talking unicorns produced through GPT2.

So this clearly creates many more risks. The Web is already awash with low-quality human-generated spam and misinformation, but this sort of thing could dramatically lower the cost. And it could play potently into the confirmation bias of the conspiracy-prone, like anti-vaxxers.

I have some misgivings about the way hyperbolic manner in which GPT2 was announced. Nvidia’s Anima Anandkumar says it better than me: “What [OpenAI is] doing is opposite of open. It is unfortunate that you hype up + propagate fear + thwart reproducibility + scientific endeavor.”

Barney Pell, whose firm, Powerset, was a deep text parser subsequently acquired by Microsoft, said:

What is worrying (and fascinating) here is that the generated text is coherent. Our ability to rapidly discard an article based on bad spelling, bad grammar, lack of structure and lack of coherence are all addressed here. Much harder to filter!

These technologies will diffuse rapidly. It only took a few months from DeepMind’s Go playing wonder to inspire an open-source clone, Leela.

While it doesn’t hurt to be have some methods or policies of review, reflection and attentuation in place, the question is less about preventing the diffusion. It is about how we start making the systemic changes to build resilience into our systems.

And systemic means that. Not just technical solutions, like blockchain-based approaches, that could ensure provenance and authority, but also investments in building social capital and trust across societies that help them withstand disinformation. It also stretches to investments in improving the media literacy and analytical toolkits of citizens. For example, globally about two-thirds of people do not know that the Facebook newsfeed is algorithmically generated. It also means reducing economic incentives for publishers, platforms and advertisers to recirculate pap and lies.

Also, see This Person Does Not Exist, which uses generative adversarial networks to create realistic looking faces of non-existent people. Hit reload for another shot.

🍟 The golden age of chip architecture. Developments often framed as problems (end of Moore's Law, deceleration of performance gains, the end of Dennard scaling) are inescapable facts but also potential opportunities for the chip industry.

High-level, domain-specific languages and architectures, freeing architects from the chains of proprietary instruction sets, along with demand from the public for improved security, will usher in a new golden age for computer architects. Aided by open source ecosystems, agilely developed chips will convincingly demonstrate advances and thereby accelerate commercial adoption.

This is quite technical but interesting for any historians of the industry. See also, Nvidia, the first of the post-Intel chip giant, announced terrible results, driven by the crash in crypto prices. Jack Wang breaks these results down cleanly. Softbank has offloaded its entire $4bn stake in Nvidia. Nvidia once seemed like such a runaway winner as demand for compute exploded.

Google researchers outline in more detail one proposed approach to federated machine learning. This allows the algorithm to be trained on decentralised data: for example, data held on a multitude of different devices (like phones). The model ‘addresses the fundamental problems of privacy, ownership, and locality of data’ because the data does not actually leave the person’s device.

💯 The Leverhulme Centre for Future Intelligence & the Nuffield Foundation released a report on ethics of artificial intelligence. There are many such reports being produced by companies, countries and non-profits, but mostly they are lists of principles. We’re drowning in lists of ethical principles. This report takes a different approach. It is actually a set of questions, often framed as dichotomies, to be a jumping off-point to further exploration. I believe it’s a more useful analytical tool for this set of questions, and this period in time. I spoke at a debate launching this report last week. (See also Morsels this week.)

Online pricing algorithms may collude with each other: “these autonomous pricing algorithms may independently discover that if they are to make the highest possible profit, they should avoid price wars. That is, they may learn to collude even if they have not been specifically instructed.” "
