Hardey Resources appoints consultant to review vanadium mine

Hardey Resources Ltd (ASX:HDY) has appointed SRK Consulting to conduct a geological review of the Nelly vanadium mine in Argentina.

The review is part of the expedited due diligence process in motion and SRK will take the lead alongside local geologists, Condor Prospecting.


Earlier this month, Hardey entered into a share sale agreement to acquire the Nelly vanadium mine subject to a 40-day due diligence period.

Today the explorer released an update on due diligence for the four sites — and told investors it now had “increased confidence to geologically model, estimate and report under the JORC (2012) Code”.

JORC compliance refers to the mining industry’s official code for reporting exploration results, mineral resources and ore reserves, managed by the Australasian Joint Ore Reserves Committee.

Hardey’s geologists now believe there as many as 383 drill-holes targeting a formation under the site along a 150km strike running through four prospects — known as Spike, Cera, Petrie and Sharptooth.

That’s up from 170 reported earlier this month.

Special report: The two Northern Territory vanadium projects that Hardey Resources is about to acquire are very similar to a neighbour’s high quality development.

Hardey (ASX:HDY) is buying Vanadium Mining and has been doing due diligence on two of its assets, the Wollagalong and Chisholm sites in the Territory. They are contiguous to TNG’s (ASX:TNG) high-quality Mt Peake project which has a JORC compliant total resource of 160Mt at 0.28 per cent vanadium pentoxide.

JORC compliance refers to the mining industry’s official code for reporting exploration results, mineral resources and ore reserves, managed by the Australasian Joint Ore Reserves Committee.

Hardey says its team has verified that Mt Peake’s underlying mineralisation of vanadiferous titano-magnetite is similar to anomalies in Wollagalong and Chisholm.

“Undoubtedly, the two Northern Territory projects are in the right neighbourhood, given the proximity to TNG’s high-calibre Mt Peake VTM operation,” said Hardey chairman Terence Clee.

“Notably, the aeromagnetic and soil sampling evidence is quite compelling that both projects are highly prospective for vanadium mineralisation.”

He said due diligence to date on Vanadium Mining’s six assets across Queensland and the Northern Territory was heading in the right direction.


One of the two Territory vanadium projects sits on the Anningie Formation, which underpins the VTM economic mineralisation at Mt Peake.

Hardey says it’ll be easy to start a comprehensive high-level exploration program of drilling, sampling and assaying because the mineralisation next door is relatively shallow.

The Wollagalong project is 6km north of Mt Peake while the Chisholm prospect is 13km east, with the projects forming the north and east boundary.

The largest vanadium resources in the Northern Territory are associated with mafic-hosted vanadium magnetite deposits in the Arunta Region’s Aileron Geological Province.

These deposits, which Hardey is targeting in the Wollagalong and Chisholm projects, have only recently been identified in the Mr Peake area.

This means that due to the Wollagalong and Chisholm projects’ proximity to Mt Peake there is significant exploration upside, although, the probability is higher for the Wollagalong project.

The aero-magnetic imagery has identified two phases of potential mineralisation with east-west and north-south trending structures visible and intersecting within the project areas.

SRK Consulting has found that the Nelly vanadium mine in Argentina being acquired by Hardey Resources is likely a medium-size, high-grade deposit.

SRK confirmed that historic operators only extracted a minor portion of the mineralised central vein, while the average grade from channel sampling was 0.8 per cent up to 1.9 per cent V2O5 – one of the highest globally.

This compares favourably to mines like Maracas in Brazil, which has an average grade of 1.2 per cent V2O5 and is the largest operating vanadium mine in South America with a resource of 256,000 tonnes.

The Nelly mine could also potentially rank alongside or higher than the Pandora mine in Utah, US, which has an average grade of 0.91 per cent V2O5.

“Confirmation from SRK Consulting there is potentially four untapped, highly mineralised veins at Nelly vanadium mine and 10 historic stockpiles, reflects the project’s significant potential upside,” executive chairman Terence Clee said.

“The board has accepted all SRK Consulting’s recommendations to expedite a high-level exploration program, with re-opening the mine as soon as possible the core priority.”

The Nelly deposit hosts a 1km mineralised trend, possibly longer, with five quartz-rich hydrothermal polymetallic veins, including one partially mined, with relatively high contents of vanadium, lead, zinc and copper.
The dimensions are up to 5.5m wide and from 12m to potentially 40m deep.

The SRK Consulting team recommended a high-level exploration program be undertaken to determine the extent of mineralisation within the system.

A key priority was verifying the V2O5 grade and ore continuity, particularly from a depth of 15m to 40m along the mineralised trend, since this would determine the projects scalability.

Potential for early cash flow

Hardey fast-tracked due diligence on the once-operating mine, after announcing a plan to buy it in July.

Shareholders backed the acquisition at last week’s extraordinary general meeting and the company can now complete the acquisition.

A priority for Hardey will be to bulk sample the stockpiles to determine if they are viable as a potential direct shipping ore (DSO) product to generate early cashflow from the Nelly mine.

DSO requires only simple crushing before it is exported, which keeps costs low.

Hardey is progressing the application to reactivate the mining licence for Nelly and studying the process to monetise the legacy stockpiles.

It is setting up a liaison office to progress securing of the exploration approval and mining right, which have already been lodged.

A report by SRK Consulting has found that the Nelly mine is likely a medium-size, high-grade deposit.

SRK confirmed that historic operators only extracted a minor portion of the mineralised central vein, while the average grade from channel sampling was 0.8 per cent up to 1.9 per cent V2O5 – one of the highest globally.

The company says Argentina’s favourable regulations allow for a legacy mining right to be reactivated more quickly compared to other mining countries and that re-opening the Nelly mine will enable Hardey to create shareholder value at a much faster rate.

It told investors today that while it typically takes three to five years to transform a greenfield project into a viable mining operation in Argentina, the relative timeframe to reactivate the Nelly vanadium mine’s mining right is potentially under 12 months.
