Bayer AG has quietly started the search for a successor to Chief Executive Officer Werner Baumann, raising the prospect of an early departure, according to people familiar with the matter.
Chairman Norbert Winkeljohann is fielding internal and external contenders with the goal of presenting a new candidate by the next annual shareholder meeting in April, the people said, asking not to be identified discussing confidential information.
While initiating the search now could indicate plans to replace Baumann before his contract expires in April 2024, it remains unclear whether he’ll be asked to hand over the reins early, the people said. A representative for Bayer declined to comment.

The Monsanto headaches are far from over. Bayer announced an additional provision of 694 million euros ($706 million) in the quarter related to ongoing settlement talks with Oregon over environmental damage caused by Monsanto’s legacy PCB products.
What’s more, the gains at the agriculture unit last quarter stemmed largely from higher prices for glyphosate and the company appears to have lost market share in soybeans, according to Sebastian Bray, an analyst at Berenberg in London.

The company also still needs to get beyond the mountain of U.S. litigation claiming that Roundup can cause cancer, which Bayer denies. The U.S. Supreme Court last month rejected the company’s appeal on the matter, and Bayer faces tough court battles in the coming weeks.
Bayer said it’s working to overcome the current energy challenges and doesn’t expect to suffer any “material financial impact” from it this year. It should be able to handle any shortages of Russian natural gas in the coming months, the company said.

The Singapore state investor is considering options ahead of the shareholder meeting next month, including requesting a no-confidence vote in Baumann or voting against ratifying the management’s performance, said the people, who asked not to be identified. Either step would significantly raise pressure on Bayer’s supervisory board to reshuffle leadership.
The move is a surprise to many, since Baumann has already survived three shareholder meetings after the controversial $63 billion Monsanto takeover closed -- including in 2019 when he actually lost a largely symbolic confidence vote. das war's heute mit meiner Bayer-Odyssee. Ich habe die zuletzt aufkommenden Stärke (eine Woche zu spät) genutzt:
Der mMn exzellente Bayer-Artikel im MM2022/02 gab mir den Rest (*) (https://www.manager-magazin.de/unternehmen/bayer-nach-glypho…), v.a. über den neuen AR-Chef und seine Wendungen und Windungen.
Meine "grob 2.5 Jahre" sind auch schon rum:

Bayer bleibt auf Watch, vor allem weil ich nun von einer Aufspaltung mittelfristig ausgehe, die eine Rally, auch der beiden Bestandteile auslösen kann, also in "grüne Biologie" und "rote Biologie" (ich denke an die damalige Aufteilung von Alcoa Inc in Arconic + Alcoa Corp).
Nur: die Aufspaltung müsste mMn schon bald kommen, also nicht erst wieder in 2...3 Jahren. Das Unternehmen scheint aus meiner Sicht langsam auszudörren. Und der Wettbewerb (*) scheint das gut zu nutzen -- weltweit.
nebenbei: die Sache mit dem U.S. Supreme Court kann sich auch noch hinziehen. Das wäre nicht die erste Verschiebung in einer Sache...
