A Federal Transportation Official Deletes Twitter Account to Avoid Elon Musk’s Fans

      22.10.2021 (Curbed)

Those who speak out against Elon Musk have come to expect the online pile-ons from Tesla fans. Twitter accounts with $TSLA in the bio are known for launching vicious attacks against anyone who dares criticize the Supreme Leader with a fervor that’s matched only by cryptocurrency boosters (and there’s likely quite a bit of overlap). If you cover Musk topics, as I have for over a decade, you learn to liberally apply mutes and blocks for the worst accounts, and tune out the insistent chorus of derision. But this week, Tesla fanboys succeeded in bullying a public official off a social media platform. Highly respected auto industry safety expert Missy Cummings was named a top federal transportation adviser on Tuesday — and by Friday she had deleted her Twitter account.

      ...

One anti-Cummings tweet, which has since been deleted, read: “If they try and take Autopilot away from us we will riot so hard January 6 will look like a day at Disneyland.” (The account later posted an apology, saying it was a joke.)

      ...

USDOT, to its credit, is standing by Cummings and stepping above the fray. “We are delighted to welcome Dr. Cummings to our team and look forward to leveraging her experience and leadership in safety and autonomous technologies,” a spokesperson told me. And at least one senior federal transportation official pledged public support for Cummings on Twitter today. This morning, National Transportation Safety Board chair Jennifer Homendy posted an “anthem of strength” for her fellow safety advocates: a video of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers singing “I Won’t Back Down.”

Egged on by Elon Musk, Tesla’s online army has now hounded Cummings into deleting her Twitter account.

Many of these attacks have been personal, misogynistic, and disturbing (Note: they don't reflect all Tesla supporters).

Here's a collection making the rounds.

Sieht nicht danach, dass die NHTSA hier nachgeben würde. Und noch hat Cummings ja gar nicht regulativ eingegriffen. Dennoch diese bemerkenswert heftige Reaktion.

Tesla Inc.’s director of Autopilot software has left the company, but he may still be called as a witness in the first case to go to a trial blaming the assisted-driving feature for a fatal crash, according to a court filing.

Christopher “CJ” Moore made a comment in an interview by the California Department of Motor Vehicles earlier this year that an agency official interpreted to mean he thought Tesla Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk had overstated how quickly the electric-car maker would be able to ramp up to fully autonomous driving.

Tesla had designated Moore as its corporate representative in a lawsuit brought by the estate of a Florida man who died in March 2019 when his Model S crashed into a semi-truck on a state highway while Autopilot was engaged.

Attorneys for Jeremy Banner’s family began taking Moore’s deposition in September 2020 and have since learned he left Tesla, according to the Oct. 7 filing. They told the state court judge in Palm Beach County who has scheduled a trial for January that they want to question Moore again because he has “personal knowledge of many of the significant relevant issues for the jury to consider in this matter.” They’re also asking the court to direct Tesla to let them question Moore’s replacement as corporate representative as they continue gathering evidence.

Tesla, Moore and attorneys for Tesla in the Banner case didn’t respond to requests for comment.

The case is Banner v. Tesla Inc., 50-2019-CA-0099662, Circuit Court of 15th Judicial Circuit, Palm Beach County, Florida.

wer so etwas Schnödes wie einen Kupferdiebstahl in der Gigafactory Nevada versteckt (2018Q3), der versteckt auch die Daten seiner Autos:

      21.10.
EXCLUSIVE Dutch forensic lab says it has decoded Tesla's driving data
      https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/dutch-…
      ...
The Dutch government's forensic lab said on Thursday it had decrypted electric carmaker Tesla Inc's (TSLA.O) closely guarded driving data-storage system, uncovering a wealth of information that could be used to investigate serious accidents.

It was already known that Tesla cars store data from accidents, but the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) said it had discovered far more data than investigators had previously been aware of.

The NFI said the decrypted data showed Tesla vehicles store information about the operation of its driver assistance system, known as Autopilot. The vehicles also record speed, accelerator pedal position, steering wheel angle and brake usage, and depending on how the vehicle is used, that data can be stored for over a year.

“These data contain a wealth of information for forensic investigators and traffic accident analysts and can help with a criminal investigation after a fatal traffic accident or an accident with injury,” Francis Hoogendijk, a digital investigator at the NFI, said in a statement.

Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Dutch lab said rather than seek the data from Tesla, it had “reverse engineered” data logs - a process where software is deconstructed to extract information - present in Tesla vehicles “in order to objectively investigate them.”

      ‘WHO IS RESPONSIBLE?’

The NFI investigated a collision involving a Tesla driver using Autopilot and a car in front of it that suddenly braked hard.

The investigation showed the Tesla driver reacted within the expected response time to a warning to resume control of the car, but the collision occurred because the Tesla was following the other vehicle too closely in busy traffic.

“That makes it interesting, because who is responsible for the following distance: the car or the driver?” said NFI investigator Aart Spek.

The NFI said Tesla encrypts its coded driving data to keep its technology secure from other manufacturers and protect driver privacy. Car owners can request their data, including camera footage, in the event of an accident.

Earlier this year, Tesla said it had established a site in China to store car data locally, as automakers came under growing scrutiny over how they handle information collected by vehicle cameras and sensors.

      DECRYPTION REVEALED MORE DATA

The NFI found that Tesla had complied with data requests from the Dutch authorities, but left out a lot of data that could have proven useful.

“Tesla however only supplies a specific subset of signals, only the ones requested, for a specific timeframe, whereas the log files contain all the recorded signals,” the NFI’s report said.

By decrypting Tesla’s code, the NFI now knows more about what kind of data the carmaker is storing and for how long, allowing for more detailed data requests, Hoogendijk said.

“You cannot claim what you do not know, so it’s helpful that we now know what else is being stored,” he said.

Hoogendijk added this also applies to other carmakers, as investigators simply do not know how much and what kind of data manufacturers store and for how long.

Tesla has remote access to the data, the lab said, which is periodically uploaded from cars and used by the company for product improvements or to fix malfunctions.

The NFI said it had obtained data from Tesla models S, Y, X and the mass-market Model 3 and shared the results at a conference of the European Association for Accident Research so that other accident analysts can use it.
