Faced With Slow 5G Rollout, EU Telcos Single Out Big Tech Again

BRUSSELS - Jan. 29, 2024 - (Reuters)European telecommunications lobbying group ETNO on Monday again urged Big Tech to help pay for the rollout of 5G and broadband as it released data showing Europe trails the United States and Asia in 5G networks, cloud computing, investments and revenues.

The comments by ETNO, whose members include Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefonica and Telecom Italia, come as the European Commission readies a proposal on digital networks and infrastructure on Feb. 21.

The EU telecoms industry's hopes of getting Alphabet's Google, Amazon, Netflix, Meta Platforms and Microsoft to help pay for the rollout of 5G and broadband were dashed last year after the Commission decided not to propose legislation to this effect but to leave it to the next team in 2025.

Despite a record 59.1 billion euros ($64 billion) in investments by the sector last year, only 10 out of 114 networks in Europe were 5G standalone, ETNO said, citing a report it commissioned from research group Analysys Mason.

On edge cloud, which brings computing capacity close to the end user, Europe only had four commercialised offers in 2023 versus 17 offers in the Asia-Pacific region and nine in North America, it said.

EU patent rule, disputed by Nokia and Ericsson, gets key EU lawmakers' vote

BRUSSELS, Jan 24 (Reuters) - EU draft rules aimed at avoiding spats over patents essential to technologies for telecoms equipment and connected cars were approved by a key EU lawmakers' group on Wednesday, despite criticism from Nokia, Ericsson and other patent holders.

The European Commission proposed the draft rules in April last year, seeking to end costly and lengthy litigation over patents used in technologies for telecoms equipment, mobile phones, computers, connected cars and smart devices.

The draft rules need to be thrashed out with European Union countries and EU lawmakers before they can become law.

A committee at the European Parliament tasked with preparing lawmakers' position backed the proposals on Wednesday, which will need approval from the legislative assembly in the coming weeks before kicking off negotiations with EU governments.

Nokia (NOKIA.HE), Ericsson (ERICb.ST) and Siemens (SIEGn.DE), in a joint letter to EU lawmakers published earlier this month, drew the committee's attention to concerns from the European Patent Office, standard-setting body ETSI and other bodies on the draft rules, asking it to take a closer look.

Nokia's head of IP policy Collette Rawnsley told Reuters last year that the proposals appeared one-sided, with additional obligations, burdens and costs falling on so-called standard essential patent (SEP) owners rather than implementers.

Lobbying group IP Europe, which counts Nokia, Ericsson and Qualcomm (QCOM.O) as members, told EU lawmakers that the proposed rules would compromise European leadership in 5G and 6G and other critical technologies and redistribute revenues in favour of foreign device manufacturers.

Lawmaker Bart Groothuis, who opposes the draft rules, questioned the necessity for them.

Das Asiengeschäft wird dagegen härter von den Chinesen bedrängt. Die aktuellen Ausgangswerte sind dafür: 15 Mrd. € Marktwert (umgerechnet) stehen für etwa 25 Mrd. € Umsatzziel in 2024. Das KGV errechnet sich mit 8 auf Basis der Gewinnschätzungen für 2024 mit etwas unsicherem Hintergrund. Auf der aktuellen Basis von rd. 4,40 € (umgerechnet) steigen wir ein.

Neue 5G-Technik spart ein Drittel des Strombedarfs

Vodafone wird in Deutschland bei der 5G-Mobilfunkversorgung von ländlichen Gebieten eine neue Technik einführen, mit der bis zu 40 Prozent weniger Strom verbraucht wird.

Dabei werden in der Schaltzentrale am Fuße einer Mobilfunkstation die Sender und Empfänger für unterschiedliche Flächenfrequenzen (900, 800 und 700 Megahertz) in einem System gebündelt, teilte der Telekommunikationsanbieter in Düsseldorf mit. Technikpartner ist der schwedische Ausrüster Ericsson.

«Durch die Bündelung der aktiven Technik funken die Stationen jetzt bei voller Leistung mit 32 bis 40 Prozent weniger Strom», sagte Vodafone-Deutschlandchef Philippe Rogge. Malaysia's switch to dual 5G network can allow participation of China's Huawei

KUALA LUMPUR : Malaysia Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said on Wednesday a switch to having a dual 5G network would allow for more effective participation by China's Huawei, providing his country with a balance of both Western and Eastern technology.

Malaysia had in 2021 unveiled a plan for a state-owned agency, Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), to own the full 5G spectrum, with various carriers using the infrastructure to provide mobile services, but the plan had come under industry criticism over pricing and competition.

State-run DNB partnered with Swedish telecoms giant Ericsson to roll out Malaysia's 5G network. It is unclear how Malaysia's plan for a second network would affect DNB's agreement with Ericsson or other mobile operators.

German interior ministry wants to force 5G operators to slash Huawei use -official

BERLIN, Sept 19 (Reuters) - Germany's interior ministry is planning to force telecoms operators to slash the use of equipment from Huawei (HWT.UL) and ZTE in their 5G networks after a review highlighted an over-reliance on these Chinese suppliers, a government official said.

The ministry has designed a staggered approach to avoid too much disruption as operators remove all critical components from Chinese vendors in their 5G core networks by 2026, the official said.

The operators, like Deutsche Telekom (DTEGn.DE) and Vodafone (VOD.L), should also reduce the share of Chinese components in their RAN and transport networks by Oct. 1, 2026, to a maximum of 25%, said the official, who declined to be named.

Jio Seeks To Raise Up To $2 Billion In Loans In Offshore Loans To Fund 5G Plans: Report

04 Sep 2023 - BNP Paribas will provide $1.9 billion-$2 billion over a nine-month period during which the telecom firm will pay back Ericsson, BNP, and some other banks, according to the report.

The telecom wing of Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries, Jio Infocomm, to raise up to $2 billion in offshore loans, with BNP Paribas acting as lead arranger, to fund the purchase of 5G network gear from Ericsson, the Economic Times (ET) said on Monday. According to the report, BNP Paribas will provide $1.9 billion-$2 billion over a nine-month period during which the telecom firm will pay back Ericsson, BNP, and some other banks, citing a source privy to the development ET stated.

The report neither mentioned the individual amounts that Jio will pay back to Ericsson, BNP and other entities in the loan deal nor clarified whether BNP was acting on behalf of a consortium. According to the report, the fundraise is through a discounted process, and the implicit interest rate will be arrived at over the nine-month period.

Swedish telecommunications firm Ericsson in October last year said that its 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) products and solutions will be deployed in Jio's 5G rollout in India.

Ericsson and Huawei Renew License Deal, Giving Access to Each Other's Patents

STOCKHOLM - Aug. 25, 2023 - Ericsson said Friday that it has renewed a multiyear global patent cross-licensing pact with Huawei, giving both companies access to each other's patented, standardized technologies.

The deal covers patents essential to each company's products within network infrastructure and consumer devices , including 3G, 4G, and 5G cellular technologies, it said.

"Both companies are major contributors to mobile communication standards and recognize the value of each other's intellectual property," said Christina Petersson, chief intellectual property officer at Ericsson.

"A balanced approach to licensing ensures that the interests of both patent holders and implementers are served fairly, driving healthy, sustainable industry development."

Financial terms weren't disclosed, but Ericsson said that with its current portfolio of intellectual property licensing contracts, it expects full-year 2023 licensing revenue to be around 11 billion Swedish kronor ($1 billion).

Ericsson has more than 60,000 granted patents and invests more than $4 billion in research and development each year.

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) Aug 25, 2023 - Sweden’s Ericsson predicted on Friday intellectual property rights (IPR) licensing income of 11 billion Swedish crowns ($1 billion) this year after it renewed a patent cross-licensing agreement with China’s Huawei.

The telecom gear maker’s renewed multi-year deal with its Chinese rival grants both companies global access to each other’s patented, standardized technologies, it said.

“With the current portfolio of IPR licensing contracts, Ericsson estimates the full-year 2023 IPR licensing revenues to be approximately 11 billion crowns,” the company said in a statement.

Eine Spionageaffäre erschüttert diesen Sommer Dänemark. Es geht um den dänischen Telecomkonzern TDC, den chinesischen Netzwerkausrüster Huawei und dessen Konkurrenten Ericsson aus Schweden. Wie die Nachrichtenagentur Bloomberg berichtet, soll Huawei TDC ausspioniert haben, um im Rennen um einen lukrativen Auftrag für das schnelle 5G-Mobilfunknetz bessere Karten gegen den Mitbewerber zu haben.

Huawei soll diese zweifelhaften Methoden eingesetzt haben, obwohl das Unternehmen der dänischen Regierung ein sogenanntes Nicht-Spionage-Abkommen angeboten hat. Intel, Ericsson to work together on custom 5G chip

July 25 (Reuters) - Intel Corp (INTC.O) on Tuesday said that it will work with Swedish telecommunications gear maker Ericsson (ERICb.ST) to make a custom chip for Ericsson's 5G networking gear, using the most advanced manufacturing technology Intel has disclosed.

Intel has lost its lead in manufacturing the smallest and most power-efficient semiconductors to rivals such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (2330.TW). A key piece of Intel Chief Executive Pat Gelsinger's plan announced in 2021 to regain that lead and turn the company around has been to pack five generations of chip manufacturing advances into four years.

Intel said that the new Ericsson chip will use Intel's "18A" manufacturing technology and is among the first chips from outside customers that Intel has will use the technology.

Der Telekomausrüster Ericsson leidet weiter unter einer Flaute in seinem Netzwerkgeschäft. Zudem schlägt der verschärfte Sparkurs massiv auf die Ergebnisse durch. Im zweiten Quartal rutschten die Schweden unter dem Strich in die roten Zahlen und fuhren einen Verlust von rund 600 Millionen schwedischen Kronen (52 Mio Euro) ein, wie das Unternehmen am Freitag in Stockholm mitteilte. Ein Jahr zuvor hatte der Konzern noch knapp 4,7 Milliarden Kronen verdient. Analysten hatten sich allerdings auf ein noch schwächeres Ergebnis eingestellt. Konzernchef Börje Ekholm rechnet erst zum Jahresende mit Besserung.
Ericsson macht vor allem die Zurückhaltung großer Mobilfunknetzbetreiber zu schaffen, die bereits früh in neue Technik rund um den Mobilfunkstandard 5G investiert hatten und jetzt ihre Lagerbestände abbauen. Im vergangenen Quartal gingen in der Netzwerksparte die Umsätze aus eigener Kraft - also ohne Zu- und Verkäufe sowie Währungseffekte - um 13 Prozent zurück. Insbesondere in den USA war die Entwicklung sehr schwach. Gute Geschäfte in Indien, wo Ericsson inzwischen zum Marktführer aufgestiegen ist, konnten dies nicht ausgleichen. Der gesamte Konzernumsatz stieg auch dank einer Übernahme leicht um 3 Prozent auf 64,4 Milliarden Kronen.

Konzernchef Ekholm hatte dem Konzern im Frühjahr wegen der schon länger mauen Entwicklung weitere Einsparungen in Milliardenhöhe verordnet. Hiervon wurden mehr als drei Milliarden Kronen als Belastungen im vergangenen Quartal verbucht. Dadurch sank das Betriebsergebnis vor Zinsen, Steuern und Firmenwertabschreibungen (Ebita) mit 0,5 Milliarden Kronen auf weniger als ein Zehntel des Vorjahreswertes (7,5 Mrd). Die entsprechende Marge brach im Vergleich zum Vorjahr von 12 Prozent auf 0,8 Prozent ein. Und auch ohne den Sondereffekt durch den Umbau sank die Profitabilität deutlich.

Ekholm bekräftigte zwar das Ziel, 2024 am unteren Ende der langfristigen Margenspanne von 15 bis 18 Prozent herauszukommen. Im laufenden Quartal dürfte die Profitabilität aber höchstens leicht über dem vergangenen Jahresviertel liegen. Erst im Schlussquartal sei mit einer schrittweisen Verbesserung zu rechnen - auch weil sich das Umfeld durch verstärkte Investitionen der Kunden wieder aufhellen dürfte.

Hervorragender Artikel über Huaweis Probleme mit den US Sanktionen. Ohne Zugang zu den neuesten Technologien (z.B. 3-5 nm Mikrochips) wird Hauwei nicht in der Lage sein konkurrenzfähige 5G Produkte herzustellen. 5G-Mobilfunk legt in Westeuropa schneller als erwartet zu

15.06.2023 - Die Europäische Kommission hat die chinesischen Telekommunikationsunternehmen Huawei und ZTE als Risiko für die Sicherheit der EU eingestuft. Beide Unternehmen stellten »in der Tat erheblich höhere Risiken« dar als andere Anbieter von 5G-Netzwerkdiensten, teilte die Kommission in Brüssel mit. Die Behörde wird daher eigenen Angaben zufolge künftig keine Dienste der beiden Unternehmen mehr nutzen.

EU-Binnenmarkt-Kommissar Thierry Breton rief auch die 27 EU-Staaten sowie Telekommunikationsunternehmen auf, in den eigenen Netzen auf Ausrüstung der beiden Hersteller zu verzichten. »Wir können es uns nicht leisten, Abhängigkeiten aufrechtzuerhalten, die als Waffen gegen unsere gemeinsamen Interessen eingesetzt werden können«, sagte Breton vor Journalisten. European Commissioner Thierry Breton said that more EU member states needed to implement the bloc's cybersecurity guidelines.

Banning Chinese telecommunications companies Huawei and ZTE from the EU's 5G networks is "justified" and in line with EU guidelines, the European Commission said on Thursday.

Most EU states have been "too slow" to exclude "high-risk" 5G vendors, explained the EU's internal market commissioner, Thierry Breton, amid the release of a progress report on how EU states are implementing the bloc's cybersecurity recommendations.

He said the bloc had been able to reduce its dependencies in other critical sectors, such as energy, "in record time", referring to the EU's efforts to reduce its reliance on Russian gas and oil.

"The situation with 5G should be no different. We cannot afford to maintain critical dependencies that could become a weapon against our interest," Breton said, adding that it was "too critical a vulnerability and too serious a risk to our common security."

Germany to face EU ire over Huawei supplies ahead of China talks

BERLIN/STOCKHOLM: The European Union is set to urge Germany to do more to reduce its use of Huawei gear in its 5G network when Brussels publishes a progress report in coming days, ahead of talks between Berlin and Beijing, two sources familiar with the matter said.

Germany is considered a laggard in implementing the EU's toolbox of security measures for 5G networks agreed three years ago to curb the use of "high risk" vendors such as China's Huawei due to concerns about possible sabotage or espionage.

EU officials will likely call out Germany and a handful of other countries for insufficient progress when they present the second 5G toolbox review in coming days, likely Friday, the two sources said. They will also criticise telecoms operators such as Deutsche Telekom, one of them said.

A European Commission spokesperson said he could only confirm the report was coming soon.

Should Germany toughen its stance, that would be a major blow to Huawei given it is Europe's largest economy, and the fact others would likely follow suit.

It could also send a signal to China that Germany is getting serious about prioritizing security over economic interests and isn't a weak link in Europe due to its large trade with Asia's rising superpower.

"This would be the nail in the coffin for Huawei in Europe," said Paolo Pescatore, an analyst at PP Foresight.

Jun 08, 2023 - The Digital Economy Promotion Agency (depa) and Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) have officially commenced their collaboration on depa’s Thailand Digital Valley - an ambitious project to develop Thailand’s own version of Silicon Valley in the United States.

The launch event included sessions with key stakeholders such as the Federation of Thai Industries, global technology solution providers, and start-ups.

Thailand Digital Valley, located 50 miles east of Bangkok, is expected to become Southeast Asia’s new digital hub that supports Thailand and the region’s digital transformation. The project is forecast to create around 20,000 new jobs and attract more than 5 billion baht worth of foreign direct investment annually.

UK to remove Chinese-made surveillance equipment from sensitive government sites

Zitat von Oginvest: LONDON (Reuters) - June 7, 2023 - Britain has committed to the removal of Chinese-made surveillance equipment from sensitive government sites as part of its latest plans to address national security concerns related to China.

Under Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who has cast China as the world's greatest challenge to security and prosperity, the government told its departments last year to stop installing Chinese-linked surveillance cameras at sensitive buildings.

In an announcement setting out a proposed tightening of procurement rules, the government said:

"We will also commit to publish a timeline for the removal of surveillance equipment produced by companies subject to China’s National Intelligence Law from sensitive central government sites.

"By committing to this timeline, we are providing reassurance and urgency around the removal plans."

Sein Ministerium hat Leitlinien für den künftigen Umgang mit China erarbeitet, es geht dabei darum, bestehende Abhängigkeiten zu verringern, insbesondere im Bereich der kritischen Infrastrukturen.
