Warren Buffett’s Berkshire buys more Occidental after 30% sell-off from record high

Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway purchased more shares of Occidental Petroleum after the oil and gas producer tumbled more than 30% from its record high.

The Omaha, Nebraska-based conglomerate scooped up 763,017 shares of the Houston-based energy company on Friday for $35.7 million, according to a regulatory filing. Berkshire is Occidental’s biggest investor, holding 28.2% stake.

Shares of Occidental have fallen nearly 32% from an all-time high reached last April. The stock dropped more than 17% in 2024 as oil prices weakened.

Buffett has made clear he won’t take full control of the oil company, founded by legendary oilman Armand Hammer. There had been speculation of a takeover after Berkshire received regulatory approval to buy as much as a 50% stake.

The “Oracle of Omaha” previously said he started buying Occidental after reading a transcript of the oil company’s earnings conference call. Occidental also pays a 1.8% dividend yield and has been investing in a carbon capture business.

Berkshire also owns $10 billion of Occidental preferred stock and has warrants to buy another 83.9 million common shares for $5 billion, or $59.62 each. The warrants were obtained as part of Berkshire’s 2019 deal that helped finance Occidental’s purchase of Anadarko Petroleum.

Berkshire CEO Buffett, who oversees Berkshire’s $300 billion equity portfolio, has been very selective about new Occidental purchases since the spring of 2024. Berkshire’s last purchase prior to December was in June 2024.

Buffett said at the 2023 Berkshire annual meeting that he wasn’t interested in owning all of Occidental and he is a fan of the company’s CEO, Vicki Hollub. Some Berkshire and Occidental investors still hold out hope that Berkshire will offer to buy the rest of the company.

The Occidental investment has been a loser for Berkshire with Barron’s estimating it has paid an average of about $53 a share since it began buying in 2022. That would mean a paper loss of about $1.5 billion.

"Strong operational performance across all segments has resulted in our highest quarterly operating cash flow this year," Chief Executive Vicki Hollub said in the earnings release late Tuesday. "The integration of CrownRock is off to a great start in terms of personnel and operations, and we have made significant progress in our deleveraging efforts, achieving nearly 90% of our short-term debt reduction target."

uffett's Berkshire Hathaway (BRKB) holds a 28.2% stake in Houston-based Occidental Petroleum, according to FactSet. Berkshire Hathaway also owns $10 billion of Occidental preferred stock and has warrants to buy another 83.9 million common shares for $5 billion.

In August 2022, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission granted Berkshire Hathaway approval to purchase up to 50% of available OXY stock. However, Warren Buffett told shareholders in early 2023 he has no intention of taking over the company.

In December 2023, Warren Buffett also spent $588.7 million on more than 10 million shares of OXY stock, following Occidental's $12 billion acquisition of Permian Basin producer CrownRock. The deal adds 94,000 net Midland Basin acres and production of 170,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day to Occidental's holdings.

Exxon Mobil Is Both Cheaper And Better Than Occidental Petroleum (NYSE:OXY)

I am overall bullish on the energy sector given the currently compressed oil prices, and sector leader XOM is particularly attractive.
Compared to close peer OXY and the overall sector, XOM offers better profitability metrics and balance sheet strength.

Yet, Exxon Mobil trades at a lower valuation than Occidental.
Both enjoy growth catalysts with their expanded exposure to the prized Permian Basin assets.
However, XOM's greater capital allocation flexibility and better ROCE enhances its ability to capitalize on growth initiatives.
