Goldman Sachs Group Inc. topped profit estimates as its equities-trading unit posted a jump in revenue that was triple what analysts expected, capping off what it’s pitching as a year of transition.

The firm’s asset and wealth division had its highest quarterly revenue in two years, buoyed by a gain tied to the sale of a financial-management business. That helped counter fixed-income trading results and investment-banking fees that fell short of expectations.

“This was a year of execution for Goldman Sachs,” Chief Executive Officer David Solomon said in a statement Tuesday. “With everything we achieved in 2023 coupled with our clear and simplified strategy, we have a much stronger platform for 2024.”

Shares of U.S. banks dropped on Tuesday as the prospect of tighter regulations and a possible downgrade of several lenders by Fitch Ratings raised investor concerns over the health of the sector.

Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation Chairman Martin Gruenberg said in a speech on Monday that the agency planned to propose new rules to overhaul how large regional banks prepare "living wills" - detailed plans on how they would wind up their businesses should they fail.

The rules are part of sweeping changes U.S. regulators are aiming to introduce to tighten oversight of the banking system following the collapse of several lenders in March.

A Fitch Ratings analyst warned that the agency could downgrade several large U.S. banks, weeks after rival Moody's cut the ratings of 10 mid-sized lenders, citing funding risks and weaker profitability.

Troubled lender SVB Financial Group said on Tuesday Goldman Sachs Group Inc had bought its bond portfolio before federal regulators took the bank into receivership.

The portfolio, consisting mostly of U.S. Treasuries, had a book value of $23.97 billion and its sale fetched proceeds of $21.45 billion for SVB, it said.

The U.S. Federal Reserve is probing the consumer business of Goldman Sachs Group Inc to determine whether the bank had appropriate safeguards in place as it ramped up lending, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter.

Shares of the investment bank were down nearly 3%.

The central bank is concerned the Wall Street giant did not have proper monitoring and control systems inside Marcus, its consumer unit, as it grew larger, the report said.

The probe, which grew out of a standard Fed review of the business in 2021 and intensified into an investigation last year, is also examining instances of customer harm and whether they were properly resolved, the report added.

Goldman hat in der letzten Finanzkrise durch frühes Aussteigen seinen Hals gerettet und sich dadurch den Hass der linken Presse zugezogen. Da haken manche nach. Wegen der stark gestiegenen Zinsen und wegen der eventuell kommenden Rezession laufen aktuell die Geschäfte im Investmentbanking etwas schlechter. Darum wird Q4 zwar besser als befürchtet aber eben trotzdem etwas schlechter als im Vorjahr.
Goldman ist eine Perle die man haben muss. Nutze die etwas günstigeren Kurse um mir in 2 Tranchen 50 Stücke zu zulegen. Will das langfristig halten als Dividendenquelle.

Solomon’s problems are more serious and existential, I am told, and how he handles what can best be described as a revolt in some quarters of Goldman’s middle and upper management ranks could determine how much longer he stays in his job.

Solomon, 60, took the job in 2018 and was always somewhat of an odd choice to run the white-shoe investment bank that usually cultivated its leaders from within. He cut his teeth at a decidedly un-Goldman-like venue: the scrappy investment bank Bear Stearns (ultimately one of the causalities of the 2008 financial crisis).

Still, the grumbling about Solomon is spreading to the managing director and partner class. High-priced Wall Street talent don’t call all the shots at any firm, of course. But Goldman’s MDs and partners have historically been a powerful force when the board decides the fate of current management, which makes Solomon’s hold on his job increasingly precarious as more and more of them defect from his camp.
