Generex Commences Long Term Phase II Trials in Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetic Patients

TORONTO, May 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Generex Biotechnology Corporation (Nasdaq: GNBT - news) today announced that it has commenced long-term Phase II clinical trials on its oral insulin formulation. The purpose of these clinical trials is to test the safety and efficacy of the Company`s oral insulin formulation on Type-1 and Type-2 diabetics, for a minimum of six months.

Specifically, these trials will involve the use of Generex`s oral insulin formulation to:

1. Replace mealtime insulin injections in Type-1 and Type-2 insulin
requiring patients.

2. Replace failing tablet therapy in Type-2 diabetics. When tablet
therapy fails to properly control blood glucose levels, their
physician would normally advise these patients, to commence insulin
injection therapy, to improve well being and avoid long-term
complications.

The Company`s oral insulin aerosolized liquid formulation is administered as a fine spray into the buccal cavity (mouth) via the Company`s proprietary RapidMist(TM) device -- a small, user-friendly device, that looks like an asthma inhaler.

Currently, there are ten clinical sites in the United States, five sites in Canada and three sites in Europe participating in the long-term trials. Among these sites are leading research centers that have completed oral insulin short-term clinical trials including--The Diabetes and Glandular Disease Clinic of San Antonio, Texas, and The National Research Institute, Los Angeles, California.

Generex is engaged in the research and development of drug delivery systems and technologies. To date, it has focused on developing a platform technology for the buccal delivery (absorption through the inner cheek walls) of large molecule drugs which, historically, have been administered only by injection. The Company`s first application for the technology is an insulin formulation, that is administered as a fine spray into the oral cavity using RapidMist(TM), a proprietary lightweight hand held aerosol applicator. In addition to the trials described above, Phase II clinical trials of Generex`s oral insulin product also are in progress in the United States, Canada and Europe.
