Network Plus shares fall 20 pct after Q1 loss widens

NEW YORK, May 9 (Reuters) - Shares of telecommunications provider Network Plus
Corp. fell almost 20 percent on Tuesday after investors balked at the company`s widening
first-quarter loss over last year and despite beating consensus estimates by two cents.

The shares fell 3-11/16 to close at 14-7/8 on the Nasdaq stock market after the company posted a first-quarter loss of $16.4
million, or 30 cents per share, compared with a loss of $3.2 million, or 11 cents per share in the year-ago period.

Wall Street analysts had, on average, been expecting the company to post a loss of 32 cents per share for the quarter,
according to research firm First Call/Thomson Financial.

Revenues tapped in at $50.3 million compared with the $33.6 million in the same period last year.

``It was ridiculous what the stock did today,`` Vik Grover, an analyst at Kaufman Bros., said about Network Plus shares, which
have dropped more than 70 percent since March. "I think it will recover.

``Looking out at what these guys are trying to build, everything is on track. There`s no negative long-term perspective, just
near-term variance and, in this market, I think people sell first and ask questions later.``

Grover said the Quincy, Mass.-based company has taken several key steps to boost its growth, which in turn increased
spending, such as expanding service offerings across the Eastern seaboard instead of just in the Northeastern and Southeastern
regions of the United States.

He said Networks Plus (NasdaqNM:NPLS - news) also changed its compensation programme for some sales representatives
to better compete in the current competitive talent market.

``None of this has an impact on the company`s terminal value,`` Grover said. ``I don`t think you can really penalise a company in
the near-term because of that.``

The Quincy, Mass.-based company, which provides broadband data and telecommunications services to small and
medium-sized businesses, said local service counted for about 29 percent of increased revenue for the period, while local lines
installed increased to more than 89,000.

Long distance revenues also increased 35 percent over the first quarter of 1999.
