Lucent agreed to collaborate with SINA
LUCENT TECHNOLOGIES: SINA.com deploys Lucent Technologies` IPWorX to accelerate Web content
delivery and distribution
MAY 24, 2000, M2 Communications - ORLANDO, Fla.- (ISPCon, booth #101) - Lucent Technologies
(NYSE: LU), a global leader in communications networking solutions, announced today that it has
agreed to collaborate with SINA.com (NASDAQ: SINA), a leading Internet media company for Chinese
communities worldwide, to enhance Web content delivery and distribution. The collaboration includes
SINA.com`s deployment of Lucent`s IPWorX Web performance solution, an integrated set of caching and
switching appliances that reduce bandwidth costs and improves customer service by significantly
reducing Web access delays.
With a portal network that offers a full array of Chinese-language news, entertainment, e-commerce
platforms, financial information, and lifestyle tips, SINA.com has deployed Lucent`s IPWorX Web
performance solution in North America to enhance users` overall online experience. With the new
technology, SINA.com is able to reduce Web response time for users by off loading server content
delivery to IPWorX WebCache, reducing server acquisition costs and saving space in data centers. In
addition to leveraging IPWorX for its North America site, SINA.com is also working with Lucent to develop
a platform for improving SINA.com`s overall Web content and delivery capabilities.
"As SINA.com expands its content and services, we are committed to providing our users with the best
online experiences by deploying the latest technologies such as IPWorX," said Jo-ning Ta, vice president
engineering at SINA.com. "SINA.com`s strategic relationship with Lucent Technologies reflects our
continued effort to bring world class innovation to the Chinese online audiences in North America as well
as to the explosive Internet population in Greater China." In addition to the core capabilities in a typical
IPWorX deployment, Lucent also worked with SINA.com to provide additional capabilities for their
network. Custom log files for third party audits, product reliability and load-balancing capabilities have
also been built into the system to meet SINA.com`s needs.
SINA.com is a prime example of the many ways in which a content provider can benefit from IPWorX,"
said Nagan Raman, product manager, IPWorX, Lucent Technologies. "The cost savings and content
distribution and delivery advantages are clear, but we were able to offer much more, providing strategic
input and expertise to meet the specific needs of our customer." Lucent`s IPWorX Web Performance
Solution IPWorX is an integrated set of caching and switching appliances delivering next-generation
applications and services with high reliability and superior performance. It enables content providers to
reduce content deployment costs while providing an enhanced customer experience. IPWorX allows
Service Providers to reduce bandwidth costs and improve customer service by significantly reducing Web
access delays. With a full line of products and services optimized for caching, traffic management, load
balancing and more, IPWorX has the means to emancipate today`s congested networks.
IPWorX is driven by new caching technology developed at Lucent`s Bell Labs. "We`ve designed
intelligent, networked caches that track access patterns and store information accordingly," said Krishan
Sabnani, Bell Labs` networking research vice president. "Using special algorithms for multicasting and
load balancing, we`re able to coordinate access to caches distributed throughout a network and
significantly decrease download times and access costs." The IPWorX solution consists of a caching
appliance, the WebCache (models 50, 100 and 100 DC), and the WebDirector (models 80, 180 and 180
DC), the market-leading layer 4/7 switch manufactured by Alteon WebSystems that is resold by Lucent
under an OEM agreement.

"M. Stanley sees only 4-5 Asian Web portals by 2004"
HONG KONG, May 24 (Reuters) - Morgan Stanley Dean Witter said on Wednesday its Internet research team expects
Asia/Pacific to have only four to five successful major Internet portals by 2004.
Morgan Stanley said the financing market is expected to dry up fairly soon for those portals who are not in the top rankings in their
segment. But the successful portals will be lucrative investments with outstanding returns, it added.
"The Internet portal market will consolidate from hundreds if not thousands of portals to just a few by 2004," Sunil Gupta, Morgan
Stanley`s executive director and head of Asian Internet Research, said in a statement.
The surviving Asian portals could be worth at least US$17 billion in market capitalization by 2004 and successful portals would be
built on brand, scale, scalability, technology and crucially, quality content, Gupta said.
In a new research report on Asian portals, Gupta said he believed advertising revenues would remain the main source of
revenues for Internet portals.
Portal advertising revenue in the region was expected to grow to US$1.90 billion in 2004 from US$87 million in 1999, implying a a
five-year compound annual growth rate of 85 percent.
Gupta forecast electronic-commerce would remain a growing but still minor protion of portal revenue, possibly less than 20-30
percent.
Morgan Stanley recommends investing in mass-market, broad horizontal portas that have the option to extend their business
models with attractive verticals.
Gupta said such portals included China`s Sina.com [SINA-news] and Netease [NTES-news], Taiwan`s Kimo.com, South Korea`s
Daum Communications [35720-news], Lycos Korea [LCOS-news], Yahoo! Asia [YHOO-news] and Yahoo! Korea.
