dieser Bericht klärt gut alle Fragen auf, die auch ich hatte. ich bin jetzt mit der Hälfte für mein Qualcomm-Engagement
vorgesehenen Betrag eingestiegen. Denke man kann da langfristig nix falsch machen. Bei 63 kauf ich nochmal, falls wir soweit fallen.

      und hier der bericht:

      China keeps Qualcomm guessing
      May 31, 2000
      by Rex Crum

China is a prize. You get there with the most and you win. San Diego`s Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM) thought it
had that prize within its grasp. It wanted most, if not all, of the Chinese market to talk on wireless phones that
run on its own technology, called CDMA.

But oops – unpredictable China sneezed Tuesday – now what looked like an almost sure bet is anything but.

"Clearly, China is the market everyone is targeting," says Mark Zohar, an analyst with Forrester Research
Inc. "Ericsson (ERICY), Nokia (NOK), Samsung. They all want to get into China."

But doing business is China is kind of like opening a fortune cookie. You never know what you`re going to get,
and the response can be interpreted in many different ways.

"China will screw around with everybody," says Brownlee Thomas, an analyst with Giga Information Group.
      "The market is extremely volatile."

      Heady times
Things were going fairly smoothly for Qualcomm. Throughout 1999 and early 2000, its stock soared like a
bottle rocket, hitting nearly $200 a share in January, just after the company did a four-for-one stock split in
December. It was the stock success story last year.

Qualcomm also seemed poised to march into China and carve out a giant slice of the country`s wireless
market. In February, it signed a royalty agreement with China Unicom to adopt and distribute CDMA
technology. China Unicom is China`s second-largest state telecom company.

But then a funny thing happened in Hong Kong on Monday. China Unicom put up its own Great Wall and
reportedly said that it didn`t have any reason to adopt Qualcomm`s CDMA technology right now.

      Staying with GSM
Seems that China Unicom already has about 7 million subscribers who use a technology that is Qualcomm`s
three-lettered enemy: GSM. The main difference between CDMA and GSM is that CDMA uses a wider
signal band. As a result, more phone traffic can run over a CDMA system.

Both technologies are fighting it out for supremacy in the United States, but GSM is the de facto standard in
Europe and parts of Asia. However, Qualcomm virtually owns the South Korean market as nearly the entire
      country uses CDMA.

Whose wireless phones run on GSM? Nokia`s, Ericsson`s and Motorola Inc.`s (MOT). In the U.S., Pacific
Bell, Bell South Corp. (BLS) and Omnipoint Technologies Inc. run GSM networks. Among the wireless
companies that run CDMA networks are Vodafone Airtouch Plc. (VOD), Bell Atlantic Corp. (BEL) and
      Sprint PCS (PCS).

Various research estimates say there are about 250 million GSM users worldwide, two-thirds of the overall
      wireless phone market.

Wireless industry officials say that China Unicom doesn`t have much incentive to set up a CDMA network
now because of its GSM customer base and even more advanced wireless methods that are expected to be on
      line in the near future.

      Topsy-turvy
What this meant for Qualcomm was an opening-bell blow to its stock. Qualcomm shares fell to as low as $60,
the lowest level since November, and nearly two-thirds less than that $200 high earlier this year.

Soon enough, investors had reason to smile again. The company`s shares rebounded, climbing up to close at
      around $76.

So what gives? China Unicom did not backtrack and say it was going to immediately build a CDMA network.
The companies that use GSM didn`t decide to abandon China, either.

Analysts say that what it all comes down to is the double-headed uncertainty and potential that comes with
      doing business in China.

"China has always fiddled around and put up roadblocks, and then say it wants foreign investment," said Giga`s
Thomas. "If you look at the typical experience, I don`t think you`ll find many who have made money in China."

      Never say die
But that isn`t keeping Qualcomm from trying.

"As far as China goes, we still feel the country is committed to rolling out CDMA soon," said Christine Trimble,
a Qualcomm spokeswoman. "We are engaged in discussions with manufacturers to bring CDMA into China."

Just last week, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill that would establish permanent normal trade
relations (PNTR) with China and make it easier for U.S. companies to do business there. Not surprisingly,
      Qualcomm approved the move.

"PNTR is particularly beneficial to Qualcomm," said company chief executive officer and chairman Irwin Mark
Jacobs in a statement. "China has a rapidly expanding need for voice communications and Internet access, both
of which are well met by CDMA."

China, however, will make up its own mind.
