Hi robby,

hab mich ein wenig mit Net insight beschäftigt. Ist zwar nicht viel aber vielleicht hift es dir.

Net Insight benutzt eine Technik namens DTM (Dynamic synchronous transfer mode) Die Technik ist vergleichbar mit SONET/SDH, also eine Zugangstechnologie für Metro-Netzwerke. Im Gegensatz zum momentanten Trend der komplett in Richtung Packetvermittelte Dienste geht ist DTM eine Circuit-Switched (also Festverbindung) Technik. Das sieht auf den ersten Blick wie ein Schritt rückwärts aus (das alte Telefonnetz arbeitet so), hat aber gewaltige Vorteile. Der Vorteil ist der, das man eine garantierte Bandbreite hat, Sprache Video usw kommt also realtime und nicht verzerrt wie bei IP. Ein weiterer Vorteil von DTM gegenüber Sonet/SDH ist der schnelle Aufbau der Festverbindung sowie die Möglichkeit die Bandbreite während der Verbindung zu ändern (immer in Schritten von 512 kb/S). Der Aufbau oder die Änderung kann in nanosec. durchgeführt werden.

Ich weiss nicht ob du George Gilder kennst, das ist einer der Top-US-Technologie Visionäre (hatte bisher fast immer recht). Der hat schon vor einiger Zeit im Hinblick auf die riesige Bandbreite die in den IP-Backbones durch DWDM vorhanden sein wird prophezeit, dass Cicuit-switching als Zugang wieder zurückkommen wird. Wenn er recht hat sitzt Net insight goldrichtig.

Neben Net insight gibt es noch Dynarc die ebenfalls auf die DTM Technologie setzten. Beide Firmen teilen sich die Patente an der Technologie. Dynarc wird wahrscheinlich dieses Jahr an die Börse gehen.

Das Hauptproblem für Net Insight und Dynarc wird sein wann DTM sich in grossem Masse durchsetzt und ob sie die Zwischenzeit finanziell überleben. Langfristig seh ich aber gute Chancen.

Metropolitan Area Networks Save Post
The current SONET rings used in Metropolitan Area Networks are not perfectly suited for the demands of the markets.

They should be able to handle bursty IP traffic, provide Quality of Service (VPN or time sensitive traffic like voice or video) and be easy to reconfigure and reallocate bandwith on demand.

As far as I know, there are 2 different approaches to solve this problem:

1) Add QoS to IP-traffic. That means priority treatment for time sensitive IP-packets and some algorithm for queuing traffic. This is what Cisco does with it’s Dynamic Packet Transport (DPT). In addition to the QoS they say that DPT uses the bandwith on the rings more efficiently have restoration features AND is cheaper than current solutions.

2) Add flexibility to a circuit switched connections. This is the approach that Dynamic synchronous Transfer Mode (DTM) uses. DTM was originally developed at Ericson. At the moment DTM is promoted by 2 Swedish start ups (Dynarc and Net Insight). DTM builds circuit switched channels that are scaleable in steps of 512 kps up to the bandwith of a connection. The channels can be set up and reconfigured in about a millisecond. They can handle all kind of traffic (IP, ATM frame relay etc) and fit very well in all existing networks. The technology should fit very well into emerging DWDM networks.

As far as I can see, none of both approaches has a significant market share at the moment, but certainly the market seems to be significant. Due to his market power, Cisco should have a advantage, but DTM seems to have a good chance to, especially if they can win support of a bigger company like Ericson. Of the 2 DTM companies Net Insight went already public and Dynarc plans to do so in 2000.

Does anybody have a opinion which technology will probably succeed or if there are more access technologies that I overlooked ?
