Vickers Ballas has `buy` call for TCL <1070.HK>

Vickers Ballas said TCL International`s acquisition of a 20 pct stake in Huizhou TCL-Telital Mobile Communication has little impact on NAV but is positive for the company`s long-term growth prospects.

Vickers also has a positive outlook on the company`s development in the China mobile market.

      It recommends TCL as a `buy`. :) :) :)

....auf jeden Fall ein solides Langzeitinvestment.

BNP Prime Peregrine rates TCL (1070-HK) outperform

TCL International has already acquired a 20 pct stake in Huizhou Telin Mobile Communication and TCL King Mobile Communication (Hong Kong) at consideration of $11.7 million and $1 million respectively, according to a report of BNP Prime Peregrine.

TCL International`s mobile phone business is at the initial stage and the current sales are about 30,000 handsets per month. the mobile phone business lost $1 million last year but made a profit of $5 million in the first five months of this year. The company targets total sales of 400,000 handsets with net profit of $10 million this year.

The report says that although the fierce competition and margin squeeze will characterise the battle for the market, TCL International is expected to gain market share on the back of its well-known brand name.

In addition, BNP Prime Peregrine remains its `outperform` rating on TCL International.

TCL Int`l Hold (1070-HK) expects TV price war to wind down

The chairman of TCL International Holdings Ltd, Tomson Li said that before another round of the colour TV price war emerges, many mainland manufacturers are merging and restructuring to ensure they are ready for the market, Xinhua News Agency reported.

Mr Li pointed out that many colour television manufacturers provide important economic support to their districts through employment and by stimulating consumer spending.

Therefore, they have to make their infrastructure more efficient to be able to survive another round of price cuts.

However, Mr Li said that the price war will soon dissipate and end within six to 12 months from now.

He also indicated that the weaker players will drop out leaving only half a dozen strong ones to survive in the market by next year.

TCL Int`l (1070-HK) clarifies on debt guarantees

TCL International Holdings Ltd has stated in its prospectus that the guarantees issued in respect of its borrowings related to its listing were to be repaid from internal resources shortly after commencement of dealing in its shares.

However, it now appears that some banks have refused to release such guarantees.

The indebtedness covered by the unreleased guarantees amounts to $95 million or 4 pct of the net asset value of the group as at December 31, 1999.

As the announcement is at variance from that stated in the prospectus, the Stock Exchange is investigating whether action has to be taken against the group.

BNP: TCL Int`l (1070-HK) to outperform with high margins

BNP Paribas Peregrine said that TCL International Holdings Ltd will outperform after surviving consolidation in the mainland TV industry and acquiring a PC business that would contribute to profit.

The firm said that TCL`s profit margin is expected to rebound from a low level as the industry consolidation process reached an end. Price wars will be unlikely.

It said TCL leads with more than 32 pct growth in sales to 5.8 million color TV sets last year despite fierce market competition. Gross profit rate was at 17 pct. Moreover, its mainland TV sets production during January to November last year dropped 5 pct compared with the same period in 1999. However, sales rose about 2 pct, reducing the size of the inventory.

After announcing the acquisition of a PC business from its parent company at the end of last year, the company`s personal computer production is now estimated to reach 260,000 units this year, thus boosting profit growth.

BNP Paribas Peregrine predicted that the company would record a 9.8 pct drop in net profit to $460 million last year, but to have a rebound for a 30.8 pct growth this year to $602 million.

Mr Li also said that the company plans to enter the US and EU markets in the second half of this year.

TCL International Holdings Limited had to write off $20 million to $30 million last year mainly for its information technology projects, including set-top box and website operations, Ming Pao reported, quoting Salomon Smith Barney.

Salomon Smith Barney has revised down the earnings forecast on TCL to 6.2 pct to 16.3 pct for the two years to 2002.
