Gibt es neue Nachrichten oder Gerüchte ?
Habe noch einige Stücke im Depot, leider.

Hi Nagler1,
Du verkaufen - dann nicht mehr leider. Schlau was!

All else being equal, an internal combustion engine with a high compression ratio makes more efficient use of the energy in the fuel, and also produces more power, than one with a lower compression ratio. However, at high engine loads, that high compression causes knock, ping and other forms of power-robbing untimed ignition. To get the best of both worlds, a new Saab engine design can vary its compression ratio infinitely within a wide range. The design hinges on the fact that the cylinder head and the cylinders are contained in a single assembly (the "monohead") that tilts back and forth.
When the engine loads are low, the engine operates at high compression for efficiency. When the loads are high—such as when the driver’s foot is deep into the accelerator—the compression ratio is low. The design incorporates supercharging, however, to augment performance as needed.
The idea of a variable compression ratio is not new. There have been several engines in which the "effective" compression ratio can be changed—typically by varying the valve timing. For example: close the intake valve late and there’s less compression. This approach works, and it’s being used in production today. Toyota employs it in its Atkinson Cycle Prius hybrid’s gasoline engine, which has variable valve timing. Mazda has it in its Millenia Miller Cycle supercharged V6, where the late timing is fixed and supercharging "fills in" throughout the range.
Saab’s approach is more precise, however, because it actually changes the engine’s mechanical ratio. By pivoting the monohead relative to the crankshaft, rods and pistons, the engine actually varies the piston stroke. The amount of tilt is small—just 4°—but it’s enough to vary the compression ratio from as low as 8:1 to as high as 14:1. This creates the potential for multifuel capability. In addition, variable compression ratio may be helpful in the performance of a gasoline engine with direct fuel injection (into the cylinder itself, instead of the intake port). If Saab can improve the design to get the peak compression ratio to 17-18:1, the engine could even run as a diesel.
The prototype five-cylinder engine produces 225 hp and 224 ft.-lb. of torque from 1.6 liters, which is impressive. This enables the small engine to provide the performance of a larger displacement engine, but also the fuel economy of a very small engine with a high compression ratio.
Today’s computer-controlled engines can be tuned closer "to the edge" because they have knock sensors. These sensors can signal an engine computer to retard the ignition timing when the engine just starts to knock, but the retarded timing reduces performance.
Most of the gain from this novel design is from the use of a small engine with a supercharger (as with the Millenia’s 2.3-liter, which produces 210 hp). However, the Saab design clearly is a "next level" approach with more power from less displacement.
An engine without a cylinder head gasket has obvious advantages. And the necessary sealing at the pivot joints of the cylinder block and crankcase does not appear to be a complex issue (Saab is using a rubber bellows). However, the machining of the Saab design is a challenge. And if the engine goes past the prototype stage and into production, at the outset anyway, it’s likely to be a limited production engine. But Saab itself is a "niche" automobile manufacturer that appeals to an audience looking for something different, so why not.
An electrically-operated supercharger just introduced by Honeywell Turbocharging Systems (formerly Garrett) is an example of a new development that could fit in with the Saab monohead engine. Called the Turbopac, the new supercharger not only offers instant response, but has no power draw when not used. This feature could work well with the Saab objective of a high-efficiency engine at lower engine loads.

Hallo tookai,

Hallo Bluesman,
