Shares of DoubleClick perk up on FTC agreement
07/28 08:33
NEW YORK, July 28 (Reuters) - Shares of DoubleClick Inc. (DCLK) and other
online advertising firms perked up Friday after the Federal Trade Commission
signed a pact to set privacy standards for advertising networks.
The government and an industry group that includes DoubleClick reached an
agreement that gives Web surfers the option of limiting how their personal data
is used by online marketing firms.
As the leading ad network, DoubleClick`s shares benefited the most, climbing
as high as 38-5/8 or 13 percent, despite sharp declines in other Nasdaq
shares. Another online ad network, 24/7 Media Inc. (TFSM), saw its shares
climb 3/8 to 11-1/2. DoubleClick shares were later up 2-1/4 to 36-5/16.
"The standards represent our best case scenario for ad networks, allowing
them to entirely maintain their original business plans and market
opportunities," said Richard Petersen, an analyst at Credit Suisse First Boston,
in a research note. "Uncertainty about privacy has been a major overhang for
these stocks. Now there is a clarity on the issue. We think this is a major
long-term positive for these stocks."
DoubleClick had shelved its plans after privacy advocates bombarded the firm
with criticism over its plans to provide marketers with Internet profiles of
individuals that combine personal data with more routine anonymous data
about their online activities.
The resolution will now allow DoubleClick to proceed with its plans to monetize
its Abacus database.
"Senior managers are now free to focus more squarely on objectives at hand,"
said SG Cowen analyst Scott Reamer in a research note.
Deutsche Banc Alex Brown analyst Vivian Kuan said in a note that while the
privacy agreement addresses one key issue facing the industry, it does not
change its ratings on the outlook of the group because they must still face
softer dot-com advertising spending.
