Risikofreudige Anleger sollten sich mal den Chart von HAND anschauen, einem Konkurrenten von Palm. HAND kann in die Bresche einspringen, die PALM aufgrund Mißmanagement bei ihren Konsumenten hinterlassen hat: HAND kann die Geräte liefern, die PALM versprochen hat. Sollte das ATH durchbrochen werden können, dann ist der Weg nach oben frei.

Finde ich auch. Wenn man günstig einsteigen möchte, sollte man aber beachten, dass die Aktie in Deutschland bisher kaum gehandelt wird. Letzte Woche z.B. lag der Nasdaq-Kurs bei umgerechnet ca. 31 Euro, in Berlin gab es nur ein paar Trades zu 33 Euro. Also empfiehlt sich allenfalls der Kauf direkt in Übersee.

Zum Einstiegspunkt: Die Aktie ist seit der IPO schon einige Male stark gestiegen (bis über 50 Dollar, glaube ich)und kam jedes Mal wieder zurück. Für langfristig orientierte, denke ich, werden die Einstiegskurse noch etwas günstiger (nach dem starken Anstieg an den letzten beiden Tagen).

Was ich noch nicht verstanden habe: HAND bewegt sich oft gegen den Trend der Nasdaq.

Fundamental sieht es m.E. sehr gut aus. Der VISOR scheint sich gut zu verkaufen. Der Markt ist wahrscheinlich groß genug für Palm und Handspring. Auf jeden Fall eine interessante Aktie.

HANDSPRING POSTS STRONG FOURTH QUARTER REVENUES, SHOWS 51% SEQUENTIAL GROWTH
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIF. (July 20, 2000) - Handspring, Inc. (NASDAQ: HAND) today posted revenues of $51.8 million for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2000 ended July 1, 2000. Quarterly revenues increased 51% over Q3 due to a strong entry into the U.S. retail market, new distribution channels in Canada, Europe and Japan and continued momentum of direct sales of its Visor™ line of handheld computers and Springboard™ expansion products.

"We are pleased to report such outstanding results in our first quarter as a public company. The significant sequential revenue increase demonstrates strong consumer acceptance of our Visor products and our Springboard platform," said Donna Dubinsky, founder and CEO of Handspring. "In addition to our ongoing direct Internet sales, our retail partners in the U.S., Europe and Japan all experienced excellent sell-through for our products."

Total fiscal year 2000 revenues were $101.9 million, reflecting brisk sales of Visor, Springboard expansion modules and accessories. Excluding amortization of deferred stock compensation, Handspring reported a net loss of $5.9 million during Q4, while net loss for fiscal year 2000 was $20.2 million. In line with company expectations, Handspring showed gross margins of 31% for the quarter. Excluding amortization of deferred stock compensation, total operating expenses were $22.1 million, or 43% of revenue.

Including amortization of deferred stock compensation, net loss for the quarter was $19.5 million, while net loss for the fiscal year was $60.3 million.

"This quarter, we invested heavily in new product development, international expansion, and developer programs," Dubinsky added. "We have been particularly pleased with the growing acceptance of our Springboard platform in the developer community, with over 4,000 developers now registered for our program." Handspring made several major announcements during the quarter. In April, the company began selling Visor handheld computers through national U.S. retail partners Best Buy, CompUSA and Staples, after selling exclusively online for the first six months of product availability. To increment its online sales, Handspring also formed a reseller relationship with Amazon.com, which implemented a Visor department in its popular online consumer electronics store.

In May, Handspring opened its European headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The company sells English and German language Visor handheld computers and Springboard modules in 26 European countries via handspring.com, and through select retail and mail order partners. Handspring also opened its Japanese headquarters in Tokyo during Q4, and launched the sale of Japanese language Visor handheld computers through both direct distribution at handspring.com and retail sales through leading retailers.

With many Springboard products from third-party developers first shipping in the quarter, Handspring opened its online Springboard module store. Products now available include the eyemodule™ digital camera from IDEO, a Physician`s Desk Reference from Franklin Electronic Publishers, the Intelligolf™ module from Karrier Communications, the OmniRemote™ universal remote control from Pacific Neo-Tek, the Wristband™ Thincom™ portable modem from Card Access, and electronic book modules from Landware. Handheld-Verkäufe sollen sich in 2000 verdoppeln

Palm profitiert vom Massenmarkt

Nach einer Marktuntersuchung von NPD Intelect sollen sich die Verkäufe im Handheld Computer Bereich in diesem Jahr mindestens verdoppeln. Das Unternehmen verfolgt laufend die Umsätze von Wiederverkäufern technischer Produkte aus dem Konsumenten-orientierten IT-Bereich.

Waren solche Information Appliances früher eher Statussymbole erfolgreicher Männlichkeit, entwickeln sie sich nun zu einem Massenmarkt. Zukünftig werden Geräte nachgefragt, die drahtlose Internet-Kommunikation erlauben, wie auch Spiele, das Verwalten persönlicher Informationen usw.

Diese Geräte sollten in den nächsten Jahren den PC in seiner Rolle als primärer Webzugang überflügeln. Auch in seiner Rolle als privates, wie unternehmensbezogenes Informations- und Kommunikationsmedium wird der PC von den Information Appliances bedrängt.

"Es ist un-cool, solch ein Gerät nicht zu haben. Aber es ist nicht nur eine Mode, es ist auch nützlich," sagt George Meier, Analyst bei NPD Intelect.

Im letzten Jahr waren 1,3 Millionen solcher Geräte in den USA verkauft worden. Dieselbe Anzahl ist in den ersten sechs Monaten dieses Jahres an den Mann, bzw. an die Frau gebracht worden. 1999 wurden 436,5 Mio. US-Dollar umgesetzt. In der ersten Hälfte des laufenden Jahres waren es 406,9 Mio. US-Dollar.

Daraus folgt, dass der durchschnittliche Verkaufspreis per Ende Juni von 350 in 1999 auf 324 in 2000 nachgegeben hat. Die Minderung sei deshalb so gering, weil die Nachfrage stark und die Belieferung wegen der Halbleiterknappheit schwierig war (und zunächst einmal bleiben wird).

Palm, Handspring, Microsoft, wie deren Partner vermarkten die Geräte aggressiv und gehen nun auf den breiteren Consumermarkt hinaus.

Marktführer Palm profitiert am meisten von diesem Trend. Sein Anteil kommt auf 65 Prozent des Wiederverkäufermarktes. Handspring, dessen Geräte auf dem Palm-OS basieren, folgt mit einem Anteil von 21,6 Prozent. Der große Vorteil von Handspring`s Visor sei ein freier Slot und ein um 100 US-Dollar niedrigerer Verkaufspreis, so die Studie. Geräte mit Microsoft`s Pocket PC Betriebssystem hätten zu kämpfen. Sowohl Casio, wie Hewlett-Packard kämen auf etwas mehr als 4, bzw. 3 Prozent Marktanteil.

Meier sieht den Markt gegenwärtig in einer Euphoriephase, die sich auch wieder abkühlen und den Realitäten Platz machen würde. Dann würde es nicht mehr nur um schöne Prognosen und viele Features gehen, sondern um hartes Marketing und Vertrieb. Ähnliche Überhitzungserscheinungen werden auch für den Kapitalmarkt gesehen.

Palm steht auf der "recommend list" von Goldman Sachs` Analyst Vik Mehta. Pacific Crest Securities` Analyst James Faucette hat seine Ersteinschätzung mit einem "buy" unterlegt. Das IPO von Palm erbrachte 874 Mio. US-Dollar, das von Handspring 200 Mio. US-Dollar.

Handspring hat für das zweite Kalenderquartal Umsätze von fast 52 Mio. US-Dollar gemeldet und lag damit sequentiell 51 Prozent über dem Vorquartal.

Palm gab bekannt, dass im zweiten Quartal 1,1 Millionen verkaufte Einheiten zu einem Umsatz von 350 Mio. US-Dollar geführt hätten. Im Vergleichsquartal des Vorjahres (noch als Teil von 3Com) waren fast 175 Mio. US-Dollar umgesetzt worden.

Eine Frage, die mir bisher keiner beantworten konnte: Werden die neuen Handies mit UMTS-Standard in Konkurrenz zu den Handhelds treten? Oder werden umgekehrt die Handhelds UMTS adaptieren? Oder bleiben das 2 Paar Schuh (was ich mir nicht vorstellen könnte)

Ich finde deine Frage sehr interessant und berechtigt. Ich habe da so meine eigene Theorie, ausgehend von der Tatsache, dass sich der Communicator von Nokia auch nicht wirklich durchgesetzt hat (ist ja ein echter "Prügel" das Gerät). Ich glaube einfach, dass Palms von der Mindestgröße eine Begrenzung haben müssen. Das Display muss einfach eine gewisse Mindestgröße haben, sonst kann man damit nicht arbeiten. Und ich finde die Größe des Displays vom Palm V schon ziemlich klein.

Andererseits sind Handys schon sehr klein geworden. Ein kleines Handy ist einfach besser und teurer als ein großes. Und wer steigt von einem praktischen Winzling auf einen klobigen Riesen um.

Alleine auf Grund dieser Voraussetzungen kann ich mir sehr gut vorstellen, dass man in Zukunft trotzdem zwei Geräte haben wird, wobei das Handy wirklich nur zum Telefonieren verwendet wird und im PDA dann ein UMTS Chip Internet und vieles mehr liefern wird.

Wie gesagt ist alles nur so eine Theorie, die vermutlich keine wirkliche Bedeutung hat.

Ich finde, dass das kurze Fazit viel wahres beinhalten könnte. Nach dieser Einschätzung würde sich in naher Zukunft eine ganz neue Konkurrenzsituation ergeben. Was meint Ihr denn dazu?

HANDSPRING ist der TopTippKonservativ der aktuellen Ausgabe des INFOTECH REPORTS. Gründe für diese Einschätzung sind das stetige Wachstum, herausragende Technik und Innovationskraft. Eine Bedingung, wieso der INFOTECH REPORT zu dieser Empfehlung gelangt ist allerdings, dass das vorwiegend "professionelle" Kundenumfeld sich weiter öffnet. Hier denkt der INFOTECH REPORT an die Verbreitung neuer Übertragungstechnologien wie UMTS, die jedermann zugänglich werden.
Hier ergibt sich unserer Meinung nach allerdings eine ganz große Gefahr. Wir sind der Ansicht, dass sich HANDSPRING dann nicht nur gegen den direkten Konkurrenten PALM durchsetzen muss, sondern auch alle Handyhersteller zur Konkurrenz zählen sollte. Denn wo wird in Zukunft zwischen "Handheld mit Mobilzugang" oder "Mobiltelefon mit Organizerfunktionen" unterschieden? Mit einer Marktkapitalisierung von gut 4,5Mrd.€ und einem KGV´01e von 1.706 halten wir ein Investment unter den besagten Risiken für unsicher.

Also ich muss sagen, das Interview mit Jeff Hawkins überzeugt mich mehr als das oberflächliche Statement von FR. Vielleicht sogar umgekehrt, er sagt ja, dass bis Ende des Jahres auch eine Version auf den Markt kommt, mit der man telefonieren kann.

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Sony Corp. is set to launch a hand-held device next month that will cost about $400 and will be the latest entry in an increasingly competitive market, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.

The device, the Sony CLIE, will use the Palm Inc. operating system, but will surpass other Palm-based devices on certain multimedia capabilities, such as letting users play digital videos, the newspaper said. Users will be able to store digital images as well.

Sony`s device would be the latest hand-held device to hit store shelves after months of increasing competition in the market. In the past year, Handspring Inc. showed off its Visor handheld computer and Microsoft Corp. launched its Pocket PC devices, the report said. Sony`s machine is aimed at the high end of the market, with rival devices selling for far less, generally in the $150 range, the newspaper said.

In addition, Sony`s decision to go with the Palm operating system is not great news for Microsoft, which has been having difficulty pushing its operating system for the Pocket PC, the paper said, noting that Palm-based machines currently have a lock on 75 percent of the market for handheld devices.

The CLIE will come with eight megabytes of memory, and an expansion slot for additional memory. A button will give the user the ability to scroll and to initiate device commands with one hand, the paper said. Among other features, the device will come bundled with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and hot-sync cradle.

"This is more of a lifestyle product and takes it away from being a pure organizational tool," Russell Paik, Sony`s (SNE: Research, Estimates) vice president of hand-held products, told the Journal.

Momentan gibt es 4 Analysten, die Handspring beobachten, davon geben 3 eine Kaufempfehlung und einer, siehe oben, ein "Strong buy"

und noch eine Fundsache aus dem Quicken-Board: Just read an article in the journal about HAND and the visor. No one can dispute that these personal digital assistants are storming the country, and no one can dispute that at current estimates PALM is far and away the leader in the field. But HAND is getting a foot in the door. According to NPD Intelect HAND has captured 20% of the marketshare by last August. That`s double the 10% marketshare that MSFT and Pocket PC Partners have combined. So things are looking up for HAND, and in some ways the battle is just beginning as these PDA`s go mainstream. HAND is about to embark on a huge advertising campaign for its Visor highlighting their many functions, their cool colors, and great add-ons such as digital camera and (this one gets me excited) MP3 player. Frankly I think HAND is poised to sweep another 20% of the market, which might make this a good time to think about picking up some shares of this company.

Ich bin von Anfang an bei HAND dabei. Der letzte Sprung bei diesen extrem hohen Umsätzen hat mich ehrlich gesagt überrascht (positiv, natürlich). Verunsichert hat mich in letzter Zeit eher SONY mit ihrem palmbasierten Produkt. Dass gerade nach dieser für HAND nicht so besonders guten Nachricht die Aktie wieder anspringt verstehe ich nicht ganz, aber na gut. Immerhin konkurrieren nun drei große Hersteller auf Basis des Erfolgsbetriebssystems PALM OS. Und Palm selbst verdient praktische immer davon, da SONY und HANDSPRING das System lizensieren müssen.

In Amy-Boards wird der Sprung mit der bevorstehenden Christmas-Season begründet. Was sagt ihr zu HAND?

Handspring ist im Vergleich zu Palm unterbewertet, bietet aber die vielleicht besseren Produkte an. Interessant scheint das PDA Cell Phone add-on zu sein. Mein Kursziel liegt deshalb bei $ 120 bis zum Jahresende.

Handspring :Angriff auf Palm
Personal Digital Assistants, kurz PDAs, erfreuen sich einer wachsenden Beliebtheit unter der amerikanischen Bevölkerung. Unter PDA
versteht man jegliche Art von mobilen Kleinstcomputern, so genannte "Handhelds", die das Speichern, Abrufen und Editieren von
Daten ermöglichen. Mit dem Einzug des Internets in unseren
Alltag hat sich das Anwendungsgebiet dieser kleinen Helfershelfer gewandelt. Früher lediglich als Gedächtnisstütze eingesetzt, hat der
Boom beim drahtlosen World Wide Web den e h e m a l i gen Mauerblümchen die Tür zum Massenmarkt aufgestoßen. E m a i l - D i e n ste, Online-Spiele, Finanzdienstleistungen: Die Anwendungsgebiete der PDAs werden immer umfangreicher. Und schon prognostizieren die Marktforscher, dass die Westentaschen-Computer den stationären PCs
in wenigen Jahren den Rang abgelaufen haben werden. Unangefochtener Marktführer bei PDAs ist Palm. Im Juni betrug der Anteil des Unter-
nehmens am Gesamtmarkt rund 65,4 Prozent und damit dreimal mehr, als der zweitplatzierte Handspring für sich in Anspruch nehmen konnte. Der Neuling wiederum verwies die alteingesessenen Technologieriesen Casio (4,4 Prozent), Hewlett-Packard (3,3 Prozent Marktanteil) und NEC (2,0 Prozent) mit 21,6 Prozent klar auf die Plätze. Dabei hat Handspring erst vor einem Jahr mit der Herstellung seines "Visors" begonnen.
Experten machen für den riesigen Erfolg des Unternehmens mehrere Fak- toren verantwortlich: Den im Vergleich zur Konkurrenz
günstigen Preis, das poppige Design und das Betriebssystem, das vom Marktführer Palm und nicht von Microsoft lizenziert wurde.
Der eigentliche Clou am Visor ist aber seine Wandlungsfähigkeit. Ein freier Steckplatz auf der Rückseite des Gerätes ermöglicht es dem
Nutzer, den PDA mit den verschiedensten Applikationen zu "füttern". Mit der richtigen Karte lässt sich das Gerät beispielsweise in einen MP3-Player oder auch in einen GPS-Empfänger verwandeln.
Aber damit gibt sich das Unternehmen keineswegs zufrieden. Kommenden Montag wird offiziell eine Einschubkarte vorgestellt, die den
Visor zu einem vollwertigen Handy mutieren lässt mit den Vorzügen eines PDAs.
Rechtzeitig vor dem Weihnachtsgeschäft soll das Gerät in den Handel kommen, um den erwarteten Massenansturm auf die digitalen Assisten-
ten in klingende Münze zu verwandeln. Die Marktforscher der NPD Group rechnen für den Gesamtmarkt im Jahr 2000 gegenüber 1999 mit mehr als einer Verdoppelung der verkauften Geräte. Und das erfreuliche für die
Produzenten: Die Preise werden vermutlich stabil bleiben. Das liegt in erster Linie an dem reissenden Absatz, der die Firmen mit der Pro-
duktion kaum nachkommen lässt. Alleine in den ersten sechs Monaten des laufenden Jahres wurden mehr PDAs verkauft als im gesamten Vorjahr. Und die Unternehmen beklagen sich schon jetzt über die mangelnde Teileversorgung. Branchenprimus Palm meldete jüngst, dass man sich bei sämtlichen Baureihen in Verzug befinde, weil es keine
Bauteile mehr gebe.
Das größte Problem für Handspring, die im letzten Quartal einen Umsatz von 51,8 Millionen Dollar erzielten, dürfte denn auch in der zeitgerechten Fertigung seiner Produkte liegen. Im Vergleich zu Palm ist die Aktie von Handspring deutlich günstiger bewertet.
Während die Börse jeden Prozentpunkt Marktanteil bei Palm mit 460 Millionen Dollar bewertet, liegt der für den zweitplatzierten Handspring mit 296 Millionen Dollar rund ein Drittel darunter. Allerdings erwirtschaftet Palm schon Gewinne, während sich diese beim Konkurrenten frühestens Ende nächsten Jahres einstellen werden.
Der zu erwartende Run auf die PDAs im Vorweihnachtsgeschäft sollte den Aktien der Anbieter weiter Auftrieb verleihen. Bei der aktuellen Bewertung ziehen wir ein Engagement in Handspring jedoch einem in Palm eindeutig vor.

Investors bullish on Handspring

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Shares of Handspring Inc. rose sharply after analysts with CIBC World Markets initiated coverage of the stock with a "strong buy" rating.

The report by analysts Thomas A. Sepenzis, Dale R. Pfau and Earl Lum cited Handspring`s (HAND) 20% share of the hand-held, wireless access device market as one reason for their recommendation. The analysts also noted that the company was founded by the same management team that developed Palm Computing Inc. (PALM).

The analysts expect Handspring`s annual unit sales to rise from eight million in 1999 to more than 67 million by 2005. They set a price target of $70 on the stock.

CIBC isn`t the only brokerage firm enthused about Handspring, of Mountain View, Calif. Credit Suisse First Boston and Merrill Lynch Capital Markets also have recommended the stock in the past couple of months.
Handspring went public in June and first traded on the Nasdaq Stock Market floor at $26.94 a share. At 4 p.m. EDT Friday, the shares were up $11.38, or 22%, at $62.75.

Handspring, Inc., (Nasdaq:HAND, news, msgs) today introduced two new products in its popular Visor family of handheld computers: Visor Prism and Visor Platinum.

Visor Prism, Handspring`s first color-enabled product, boasts 16-bit color and can display over 65,000 colors for viewing picture-quality graphics, as well as vivid games and maps. Visor Platinum is the fastest Palm OS handheld computer on the market today -- at least 50% faster than Visor Deluxe and as much as twice as fast as many other Palm OS products. In addition, Visor Prism and Visor Platinum feature the Springboard expansion slot to harness the true benefits of a color display and full expandability. Mal was anderes: Nach soviel Glück mit Handspring; es gibt nach meiner Ansicht eine andere, vielversprechende IPO vom 12.7. = Network Engine, US-Ticker:NENG. Der Kurs ist momentan durch das Markumfeld wieder nahe der Erstnotierung. Werde die Aktie vorläufig mal beobachten und gegebenenfalls einsteigen. Palm und Handspring: Chance und Risiko zugleich
Während die großen Hersteller von PCs wie Dell Computer und Apple mitgeholfen haben, den Technologieindex Nasdaq in den letzten paar Wochen um über 1.000 Punkte in die Tiefe zu treiben, konnten sich die Handheld-Produzenten Palm (Nasdaq: PALM) und insbesondere Handspring (Nasdaq: HAND) wesentlich stärker zeigen. Der Palmtop-Markt scheint ein neuer, heißer Trend mit einer überzeugenden fundamentalen Grundlage zu sein, vor allem wenn man sich die Schwierigkeiten der PC-Branche betrachtet.


Mittlerweile setzt sich bei einigen Marktteilnehmern die Erkenntnis durch, dass Unternehmen wie Palm, Handspring oder auch Research in Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM) nicht nur von der Schwäche der „Boxmaker“ profitieren, sondern auch einer der Gründe dafür sind. SG Cowen-Analyst Drew Peck denkt, dass die Flut von tragbaren Geräten den Markt für Konsumentenelektronik so sehr fragmentiert hat, dass die PC-Hersteller in Bedrängnis geraten. Seiner Meinung nach gibt es so viele neue Geräte, PDAs (personal digital assistants), digitale Kameras oder MP3-Player, dass sie das Geld aus dem PC-Sektor abziehen. „Das Geld muss irgendwo herkommen und meiner Meinung nach fließt es aus dem PC-Markt ab.“ Und der Bereich mobiler Geräte befindet sich gerade erst am Anfang des Durchdringungszyklus’.


Die Entstehung des Internetsektors Ende der 1990er erteilte den Anlegern die jüngste Lektion in Bezug auf das explosive Umsatzwachstum, was den Beginn dieser Zyklen betrifft. Und die „Neuen“ konnten in der Tat kräftig wachsen. Im Vergleich zum Vorjahreszeitraum konnte Palm im letzten Quartal eine Umsatzsteigerung von 127 Prozent erzielen, Research in Motion meldete 121 Prozent Zuwachs und Handspring immerhin 51 Prozent. Auch wenn man bedenkt, dass HAND zu dieser Zeit noch überhaupt keinen Umsatz erzielte, sind das imponierende Zahlen.

Und auch wenn es noch sehr früh ist für das Unternehmen, es gibt überhaupt noch keine Analystenprognosen zu den Verkaufszahlen von Handsprings Visor, scheinen die 8,8 Mrd. Dollar Marktkapitalisierung bisher nicht völlig ungerechtfertigt. Vor allem jetzt, da der weltweite Handymarkt schrumpft. Dort sitzt nämlich mit Firmen wie Nokia oder Ericsson wiederum starke Konkurrenz. Mit seinem VisorPhone hat Handspring hier aber ein deutliches Zeichen im zu erwartenden Kampf zwischen Handys und PDAs gesetzt. Mit der Möglichkeit, von dem Gerät aus mobil zu telefonieren und ins Internet zu gehen, zeigt man, dass man bestens gerüstet ist.

Doch Barry Hyman von Weatherly Securities sieht noch keine Gründe, in eine dauerhafte Euphorie zu verfallen: „Ich sehe diese Produkte in einer speziellen Position. Die Leute flüchten nur aus einem schwachen Sektor in einen momentan stärkeren. Ich bewerte Palm nicht als günstig, wenn es mit dem Acht- oder Neunfachen des Umsatzwachstums bewertet ist. Auch Handspring sehe ich nicht als billig, wenn es noch keinen Gewinn erzielt hat.“

Auch heute wieder können die Aktien von Palm und Handspring wieder kräftig zulegen. Handspring gewinnt 4,0 Prozent auf 69 3/4 Dollar, während Palm sogar 8,9 Prozent auf 51 1/8 klettert.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (CBS.MW) -- Hand-held-computer maker Handspring Inc. beat analysts` expectations Tuesday, crediting strong demand, expansion in the U.S. market and new distribution channels abroad.

Handspring (HAND: news, msgs) reported a first-quarter loss of $8 million, or 8 cents a share, compared with a $5.9 million, or 13-cent, loss reported by the company in the year-ago quarter. Analysts polled by First Call expected Handspring to report a first-quarter loss of 13 cents a share.

Revenue came in at $70.5 million, compared with $51.8 million reported in the same quarter a year ago.

"We continue to see broad acceptance of our products and the Springboard platform across all regions of the world. We feel very positive about our position as we head into the holiday season," said Handspring`s chief executive officer, Donna Dubinsky, in a company earnings release.

Handspring introduced two new products in its Visor line Monday, the Visor Prism and Visor Platinum. The Prism is Handspring`s first color-enabled product, and the Platinum is the fastest Palm OS handheld computer on the market, said the company.

The company also said it expanded its domestic retail distribution during the first quarter, adding retail partners such as Fry`s Electronics, J&R Computer World and CDW. In addition, the company added new distributors in Canada and France.

Shares of Handspring closed up 31 cents at $77.88 ahead of its after-the-bell earnings release. The company went public on June 21 at $20 a share.

Handspring - Test der 100 Dollar-Marke (GIS)
Nachdem der Handheld-Hersteller Handspring (NASDAQ: HAND) immer mehr zum Herausforderer
Nummer Eins des Marktführers Palm (NASDAQ: PALM) mutiert und ihm vor allem durch
die Positionierung im Niedrigpreissegment arge Probleme bereitet, scheinen die
Aktien nur noch einen Weg zu kennen: den nach oben.

Als dann vor zwei Tagen die Ergebniszahlen vorgelegt wurden, notierten die Titel
kurzzeitg auf einem neuen Allzeithoch. Es konnte jedoch nicht gehalten werden
und der Schlusskurs lag am 17. Oktober bei 77 7/8 US-Dollar historie. Nur zwei
Tage darauf (heute) schicken sich die Aktien an, erstmals in den dreistelligen
Kursbereich vorzustoßen. Es gelang ihnen beinahe, ehe die Tagesrallye bei 99
5/16 US-Dollar erst einmal beendet war. Aktuell pendeln die Kurse um den Bereich
93 1/2 US-Dollar. Das entspricht noch immer einem Kursplus von über 2 Prozent.
Doch damit können sie heute nicht den Gesamtmarkt toppen, denn die NASDAQ eröffnete
mit über 5 Prozent Plus und liegt aktuell mit ca. 181 Punkten oder 5,7 Prozent
im positiven Bereich.

Die Aktien von Handspring, gehandelt an der NASDAQ, wurden Mitte Juni zu 10
US-Dollar emittiert. Wer damals Aktien zugeteilt bekam, kann sich mittlerweile
über nahezu eine Verzehnfachung seines eingesetzten Kapitals freuen. Auch wer
am ersten Handelstag zu Kursen um die 25 US-Dollar bis 28 US-Dollar ein paar
der Stücke ergattert hat, kann sich glücklich schätzen.

bevor ihr wieder in Handspring einsteigt, wartet erstmal die heutige Sitzung ab. Wir bilden nämlich gerade ein Dreieck aus, dessen untere Begrenzung natürlich halten muß, damit wir steigende Kurse erwarten können. Intraday hat die untere Begrenzung zwar nicht gehalten, aber der Schlußkurs war genau darauf. Also abwarten, morgen könnt ihr immer noch kaufen. Wir haben im Bereich von $ 72 eine starke Unterstützung. Die Äußerungen von Handspring sind meiner Meinung nach nicht korrekt, weil mir eine institutionelle Aktivität bei HAND nicht bekannt ist.

Mein Rat deshalb: Heutige Sitzung abwarten. Hält das Dreieck, dann werden wir deutlich (!!!) höhere Kurse sehen. Dazu auch eine generelle Bemerkung: Viele machen sich Sorgen wegen der hohen Bewertung. Das ist bei Hot Stocks immer so. Man kann solche Aktien nicht einfach kaufen und liegenlassen. Irgendwann wird die Begeisterung enden. Dann muß man rechtzeitig abspringen. Guckt euch mal NUAN genauer an, ich kenne kein besseres Beispiel.

Der Hersteller von Handheld-Computern Palm (Nasdaq: PALM) wird eine Marketingkampagne
im Wert von 100 Mio. Dollar starten. Die Anzeigen werden in nationalen Magazinen,

Handspring beats Street
Handheld computer maker`s revenue surges 600 percent on Visor sales

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Handspring Inc., the maker of handheld computers that compete with those made by Palm, on Tuesday reported fiscal second quarter revenue and earnings that beat analyst estimates.

Mountain View, Calif.-based Handspring (HAND: Research, Estimates) said that its second quarter loss, not including non-cash charges, was $7 million, or 7 cents per share, versus a loss of $3.8 million, or 12 cents per share, in the same period last year. The mean analyst estimate was a loss of 16 cents per share, according to First Call/Thomson Financial.

Revenue soared to $115.6 million for quarter ended Dec. 30, a 64 percent increase over the fiscal first quarter and a 600 percent increase from the same period last year, reflecting strong holiday demand for Handspring`s Visor line of handheld computers. Continued channel expansion in the U.S. retail market, along with new distribution channels in Asia, also contributed to the strong quarter, the company said.

Analysts had expected Handspring`s revenue to total $103 million, according to First Call.

However, several analysts predicted better sales and a narrower loss given reports of strong holiday sales.

Including the compensation costs, Handspring lost $15.2 million, or 15 cents per share.

Chief Executive Donna Dubinsky said during the company`s conference call that a component crunch is easing.

"In general we have seen improved supply conditions," Dubinsky said. "We continue to feel our business is not constrained by component shortages."

With the new, higher priced models, Handspring`s gross margins increased to 31.4 percent, up slightly from the prior quarter.

In contrast to the rather dire reports of PC stocks, handheld sales appear to have been strong and analysts say that the devices continue to remain popular.

"Post-Christmas sales remain strong as Handspring continues to see strong demand for its product," Lehman Brothers analysts Joseph To and Dan Niles said in a research report last week.

Dubinsky said Handspring will expand the launch of VisorPhone, its combination phone and handheld computer, by adding support this month for VoiceStream and Powertel wireless networks.

The VisorPhone is already offered on Handspring`s Web site for customers in California, Nevada, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee. These states are served by Cingular Wireless, the company formed by the merger of Bell South and SBC`s wireless operations.

The company plans to begin selling the VisorPhone in U.S. stores later this quarter and expects to sell the devices in Europe by mid-year.

Der Umsatz konnte im Jahresvergleich von 15,79 Millionen US-$ auf 115,62 Millionen US-$ zulegen, beim Jahresergebnis weitete man den Verlust von 10,06 Millionen $ oder 32 Cents/Aktie auf 15,19 Millionen $ oder 15 Cents/Aktie aus.
Das liegt aber immer noch deutlich über den prognostizierten 102,66 Millionen $ beim Umsatz und 16 Cents Verlust/Aktie beim Ergebnis.
Nachbörslich legt Handspring um knapp 8% auf 48$ zu, nachdem man während des Nasdaqhandels 6% abgeben mußte.

Handheld-Umsatz um mehr als 100% gestiegen

Der Umsatz beim Handheld-Umsatz hat sich im Jahr 2000 gegenüber dem Vorjahr verdoppelt. Dies besagt eine aktuelle Studie, welche im Wall Street Journal veröffentlicht wurde.

Der Umsatz stieg im Handheld-Bereich auf $1.03 Mrd. während im PC-Absatz ein Rückgang des Umsatzes beobachtet werden konnte. 1999 wurde im Handheld Sektor ein Umsatz von $436.5 Mio. erzielt. Der Absatz nach Einheiten hat sich auf 3.5 Mio. Handhelds ebenfalls mehr als verdoppelt. Der durchschnittliche Preis, welche Konsumenten für ein Handheld bezahlen mussten, ist gegenüber 1999 im Jahr 2000 um 11% auf $293.51 gefallen.

Der Umsatz im PC-Bereich stieg um nur 10%.

Dominante Unternehmen im Handheld Sektor sind Palm und Handspring.

Handspring - Verkaufen ?

Handspring konnte im zweiten Quartal 2001 gegenüber dem Vorjahreszeitraum ein Umsatzwachstum von 600% und einen sequentiellen Anstieg von 64% ausweisen. Der höher als erwartete Umsatz ermöglichte es dem Handheld-Hersteller, die Multex Estimate Consensus mit einem Verlust je Aktie von 15 cents mit 8 cents zu schlagen. Analysten stufen ihre Schätzungen für den Umsatz auf $120 Mio. für das dritte Quartal auf, der Fiskaljahrumsatz 2001 wird auf $440 geschätzt. The Internet Analyst stellt die Aktie trotz der überaus guten Zahlen in die Rubrik "Sell Report" ein, da man der Meinung ist, dass ein Hardware-Niche-Unternehmen wie Handspring trotz der guten Peformance hinsichtlich der Erträge nicht eine derartige Bewertung verdiene.

Der Markt bewertet das Unternehmen mit dem zehnfachen des Umsatzes, und dies trotz der Tatsache, dass das Unternehmen große Verluste generiert. Die Marge lag bei nur 31.4%. Handspring hat darüber hinaus keine eigenen Technologien, was anderen Unternehmen sehr schnell ermöglicht, mit ähnlichen Produkten den Handspring den Rang abzulaufen. Handspring benutzt das Betriebssystem von Palm und kauft die Chips von Motorola. Die einzige Neuerung, welche das Handspring-Handheld von den Konkurrenzprodukten von Palm, Sony und Compaq abhebt, ist die Slot-Plattform mit der Bezeichnung The Springboard. Die Steckplätze erlauben es Hardware-Herstellern, Geräte zu entwickeln, welche dann einfach in das Gerät eingesteckt und danach benutzt werden. Die Add Ons können z.B. MP3s abspielen, digitale Bilder machen oder wie ein Handy funktionieren.

Während es außer Frage steht, dass die Entwickler und Konsumenten die Produkte von Handspring aufnehmen und das Unternehmen damit Erfolg hat, gab Palm bereits bekannt, in diesem Jahr eine Reihe von Geräten mit Expansions-Slots vorzustellen.

Sollte dies geschehen hat sich der Marktvorteil für Handspring in Luft aufgelöst. Zur Zeit steht Handspring in Konkurrenz zu einer Reihe von gut finanzierten Technologie-Unternehmen wie Nokia oder Motorola, welche die PDA-Funktionalitäten direkt in die eigenen Mobilfunkgeräte integrieren.

Sobald diese Unternehmen damit beginnen, Handspring das Wasser abzugraben, wird laut The Internet Analyst auch das Umsatzwachstum langsamer sein. Wie bei vielen Internet-Unternehmen wird der Markt Handspring dann nach einem Vielfachen des Ergebnisses bewerten. Sogar die bullishen Analysten erwarten, dass Handspring erst 2002 mit einem positiven Ergebnis aufwarten wird. Und da Handspring ein reiner Hersteller von Hardware-Produkten ist (ohne ein eigenes Betriebssystem) ist man bei The Internet Analyst der Meinung, dass der Handheld-Hersteller nie substantiell höhere Margen generieren werde.

Die Aktionäre sollten etwas aus der fundamental volatilen Entwicklung von Gateway und Konsorten gelernt haben, so The Internet Analyst. Jahre lang habe Gateway innovative Produkte hergestellt, welche auf den Chips von Intel und dem Betriebssystem von Microsoft basierten. Aber nun im Jahr 2001, wo der PC-Markt den Höchstpunkt überschritten hat, ist das Unternehmen nur noch mit einem Bruchteil der urprünglichen Kapitalisierung bewertet. Ich will mich ja nicht bashen. ABER: Ich glaub` die Einschätzung von BörseGo ist - was die Fundamentals/Bewertung ohne eigenes OS angeht - absolut richtig. Das heisst natürlich nicht, dass es nicht wieder (unverständlicherweise) steil aufwärts gehen kann mit HAND. Denn es war ja schon mal so & OS hatten sie damals auch kein eigenes. Mir war & ist das Eis hier jedenfalls zu dünn. Und ich investiere nicht gerade ohne Risiko...

Is Palm a Short?
Palm versus Handspring
Handspring shakes Palm down

Shorting stocks is risky, but it can be a fun and rewarding way to gain from falling stock prices. Today we contemplate a new short: Palm. Although it is top dog and first mover in an important industry, Palm lacks the management that it once had, and Handspring is taking market share. Is Palm a fallen star?

When a respected company hits a pocket of air during mid-flight, everyone notices. A sharp drop in the share price and future expectations occurs, alongside a sharp rise in the stomachs of shareholders and people who nearly bought the stock before the plunge. "I could have been on that one," people murmur, thoughtfully shaking their heads. But amidst our private near misses and public disbelief, not many of us think to short the crestfallen company.

As a refresher, shorting a company is when you sell shares of stock that you don`t own (you borrow the shares from a broker) in hopes that you can buy the shares back at a lower price. You then pocket the difference. If the stock rises sharply, you can lose your shirt.

The Rule Breaker Portfolio has shorted some big names before. Quarterdeck was a big name in 1996. The portfolio shorted the software company because its financials and its management were suspect, not to mention its products. The stock was sold short at around $8 per share. We covered the short, meaning we bought back the shares to return to the broker, at about $4 per share, pocketing a 50% gain. If we`d waited, we could have bought the shares at $2.

Soon after, we shorted Trump Hotels and Casino Resorts (NYSE: DJT) at about $8 per share. We covered that around $4, too. Now it`s $2. Trump Hotels has $1.8 billion debt and lacks net income.

Now, the potential short that we`re about to discuss has a strong balance sheet, was recently profitable, and is in a promising industry. So, it isn`t an ideal short, but the prospect is interesting nonetheless, and since shorting can be devilishly fun, we`re trying on different ideas for size.

Try on Palm Inc. (Nasdaq: PALM): Seller of the famous PalmPilot handheld computer; top dog and first mover in an important, emerging industry; also, apparently, first to stumble. Palm recently announced that it would liquidate $200 million in aged inventory because the product was not likely to sell at normal prices. It is outdated. Handspring`s (Nasdaq: HAND) more versatile and less costly handheld computers are stealing market share, while Palm`s new models, due by June, are tempering demand for existing Palm models. Also, Palm says, demand has simply slowed.

Whatever the reasons, $200 million in inventory is a giant pile of clams when you only had $460 million in sales last quarter, and when you expect only $300 million in sales for the current quarter. The retail channel is full of Palm products and now Palm is forced to eat them. Did management have its head in the sand? How often does it do retail channel checks? Didn`t it know that product was piling up?

If Palm is like Handspring, it may not be entirely at fault. Once Handspring has a product order in the queue three months from mass production, it is basically unable to cancel the order. Those puppies are going to be made even if they`re going straight to the pound (sorry for the sad metaphor --- I love animals, too).

Either way, whether the inventory glut is due to poor management or not, Palm`s management is still a shell of its former self. The three founders of Palm -- the man who created the PalmPilot, the woman who built Palm Inc. from the ground up, and the man who marketed the PalmPilot as it became the fastest-selling electronic product in history -- all bolted to start Handspring. It is estimated that 75% of Palm`s original technical engineers bolted Palm to join Handspring, too. Seventy-five percent!

So is it any wonder that since late 1999 -- when Handspring launched its first product, the Visor, which can become a phone, MP3 player, camera, and more -- PalmPilots haven`t advanced much at all? PalmPilots are still basically the same old organizer with capability that only expands by loading extra software. Only in the upcoming new models (the "m" series) do PalmPilots begin to offer expansion in ways that Handspring has offered for eighteen months. The thing is, Handspring will have its next generation product on shelves before too long, and that product could once again leapfrog Palm in functionality and price.

Numbers show Handspring`s early acceptance. The company has quickly gone from a big zero to 26% market share. Palm`s market share has gone from about 86% to about 60% since October 1999 when Visor launched. Though from a smaller base, Handspring`s sales are increasing while Palm`s have recently declined.

From my perspective, Handspring is innovating and moving quickly. It is building a differentiated brand that stands for leadership. And sure, Handspring isn`t immune to a demand slowdown, but it has much less inventory than Palm. Also, early Palm enthusiasts know that Handspring has the Palm inventors at its helm. Given that, many are buying Handspring products and recommending them to friends who are new to the industry. (Finally, note: Handspring isn`t beholden to the Palm Operating System, as most believe. Handspring chairman Jeff Hawkins states that eventually Handspring will offer other operating systems, including perhaps its own, but it has rights to Palm`s software, too, until 2009. That`s a potential win-win.)

In contrast, I see Palm as slow to innovate, stuck with mountains of inventory, and -- most importantly -- as being run by a management that inherited someone else`s aging idea. Do Palm managers have a vision for the handheld computer industry the way that Handspring`s chairman does? I don`t see reasons to believe so. So far, they`ve seemingly just copied his ideas.

At a current $8.40 per share, Palm is valued at $4.7 billion. After briefly making money, it is now losing it again. Clearly this column is just step one. We need much more analysis before we`d short Palm. But it`s a thought. So, am I whacked in the head, or what? Would shorting Palm be a big mistake? Please share your thoughts.

Handspring in free cellular add-on promo

LOS ANGELES, Aug 28 (Reuters) - Personal digital assistant maker Handspring Inc. (NasdaqNM:HAND - news) began giving away its expansion cellular phone
module for free on Tuesday as part of a promotion to spur lagging sales of the device that turns a handheld organizer into a phone.

Only a few weeks ago, Handspring slashed the price of the unit to $49 from $249.

The company also said it was still on track for releasing a device with always-on integrated wireless Internet
access, a day after competitor Palm Inc. (NasdaqNM:PALM - news) received Federal Communications
Commission approval for such a product.

The free phone offer only applies when it is bought along with a handheld device through Handspring`s Web
site, and then immediately activated through a compatible carrier. Existing Visor customers can still buy the
module separately for $49.

Customers in California and Massachusetts will have to pay taxes of $15 to $25 on the free module, based on
respective state laws, according to the fine print on Handspring`s site.

``I don`t think it`s a lot different than when we announced the price cut to $49,`` a Handsrping spokesman said.
He said that this promotion, which is for a limited time but has no set end date as yet, is intended to spur consumer interest both in the phone and the Visor unit itself.

The VisorPhone module, which runs on cellular networks using the Global System for Mobile (GSM) standard, slips into the proprietary Springboard expansion port
on Handspring`s Visor handhelds. It turns the device into a cell phone, using an on-screen keypad and microphone as the mouthpiece.

When announcing the price cut to $49 on July 16, Handspring acknowledged the device had underperformed expectations.

``It just hasn`t sold as quickly in the volumes we had hoped it would sell,`` a spokesman for Mountain View, California-based Handspring said at the time. The
VisorPhone began shipping on Dec. 18 of last year.

The spokesman said today that interest in the VisorPhone has ``definitely`` picked up since the price cut, though he declined to provide any sales figures.

The new offer comes on the heels of price cuts for most Handspring handhelds announced on Aug. 20. The company cut suggested prices on its devices anywhere
from $20 on lower-end models up to $100 on its relatively new Visor Edge unit.

On Aug. 2, developer AirPrime and cellular carrier Sprint PCS Group (NYSE:PCS - news) announced they would offer a phone module for the Visor that ran on
CDMA networks. That module is expected to be available at Sprint PCS stores next month for $250.

The Sprint module differs from the VisorPhone in that it operates on a more widely distributed network and is designed to be upgraded for higher-rate data
capabilities once Sprint rolls out its third-generation (3G) networks.

The Handspring spokesman said VisorPhone will not be upgradeable once GSM carriers upgrade to their own version of 3G networks. However, he did say the
company considers the VisorPhone an ``important stepping stone`` toward a device with integrated, always-on Internet access.

On Monday, the FCC approved a new device, the i705, from Palm, that has a built-in antenna and a constant connection to the Internet. It is expected to be
released later this year.

The Palm device will be the successor to Palm`s VIIx, which had a built-in antenna but not an always-on connection. The price of that device was cut earlier this year
to $199, or $99 with one year`s pre-paid service activation, in response to sluggish sales. A Palm spokeswoman said the company did not comment on
unannounced products.

Handspring shares fell 18.15 percent, or 49 cents, to close at $2.21 a share on the Nasdaq. The stock traded as high at $99.31 during the past 52 weeks.
