AMD set for
Intel challenge with 64-bit chip
Financial Times ; 10-Aug-2000
By TOM FOREMSKI
Advanced Micro Devices, the chief competitor in
microprocessors to Intel, the world`s largest chipmaker, has
completed the design of a 64-bit microprocessor that will
challenge Intel`s delayed Itanium chip.
It represents a further thorn in the side of Intel, which has lost
some big PC customers to AMD. The X86-64 chip will provide
AMD with entry into the lucrative server market and for
high-performance graphics workstations.
This week AMD will distribute the technical specifications for its
64-bit chip to software developers so that they can prepare
applications that take advantage of the high-performance
microprocessor.
"The AMD X86-64 could turn out to be a very formidable
microprocessor and compete effectively against Intel`s Itanium
and its desktop microprocessor line," said Nathan Brookwood,
chief analyst at Insight 64, a US microprocessor market research
company.
AMD must now complete the internal lay-out of the chip, first
samples of which are expected in the second quarter of next year.
Intel has its own 64-bit microprocessor called Itanium that has
been delayed twice and is now expected by the end of this year.
However, Itanium is focused on the mid to high-end server
market, a fast growing sector as companies expand their
e-business systems.
AMD is targeting the desktop and low to mid-range server market
with its X86-64. This represents a large opportunity for the
company that has built its business largely in consumer PC
markets.
The X86-64 microprocessor is expected to be cheaper than
Itanium. AMD has also designed the chip to provide much faster
performance in 32-bit applications, which cover most current
business applications.
Intel has said that Itanium systems would not run 32-bit
applications faster than its desktop microprocessors.
"AMD is essentially saying `your 32-bit applications will run faster
and you get 64-bit performance for free`," Mr Brookwood added.
The first X86-64 based computers are expected in the middle of
next year and could be priced as low as Dollars 1500-Dollars
2500, about the same price as today`s high-performance PCs.
Intel is not targeting Itanium for the desktop market because it can
sell the chip at a larger premium for large IT systems. Itanium is a
"radical" design, Mr Brookwood said, which may slow its
adoption.
AMD`s X86-64 chip is an extension of the current 32-bit
microprocessor design such as is found in Intel`s mainstream line
of Pentium III microprocessors and AMD`s Athlon line.
Intel`s problems meeting higher-than-expected demand has
boosted business for AMD as it picked up customers unable to
obtain enough Intel chips.
