Hi Leute!
Meine Meinung steht!

Web Freebies Give Way To Fees
By Betsy Schiffman
..........
.........
Shares of RealNetworks went up on the news, closing up 5.72% at $43.87. However, investors may be a little prematurely enthusiastic. It remains to be proven if consumers are ready to swallow fees on the PC; and the content may not be compelling enough to demand a $10 monthly fee. For $15 more, consumers can order basic cable and watch TV-quality transmission of a wide variety of quality content. Vice President of Media Programming Mark Hall readily admits that the business will come slowly.
``We`re not claiming this is going to revolutionize things overnight; it`s a slow and hard process. But we think eventually we`ll get better programming, more subscriptions, and this is a business that we`re poised to execute in,`` Hall says.
Still, Ric Dube, an analyst at Cambridge, Mass.-based new media consulting firm Webnoize wonders if consumers will ever be willing to pay for PC-based Web content.
``We`re going to see tons of appeals for fees, but I`m not sure people will pay for Web services over the PC,`` Dube says. ``Cable and wireless providers are in a prime position to charge for Web services since people are already accustomed to paying those monthly fees.``
So does it mean disaster if RealNetworks` GoldPass flops? According to analysts, it shouldn`t harm existing business.
``Any upgrades are gravy,`` says San Francisco-based WR Hambrecht analyst Bill Lennan. ``The majority of [RealNetworks`] revenues come from server sales. I like the company if it can sell RealPlayer to 1% to 2% of its user base, but I`d like the company more if it could increase sales to 3% to 4% of its user base.``
It`s a good thing, because consumer sales are still looking pretty tough.
