CURIS` OP-1 RECEIVES HDE STATUS
IN THE UNITED STATES
THIRD MAJOR MARKET APPROVAL FOR
REGENERATIVE PRODUCT
CAMBRIDGE, MA, October 18, 2001 - Curis, Inc. (NASDAQ: CRIS) today reported that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted Stryker Corporation (NYSE: SYK) Humanitarian Device Exemption (HDE) status for Curis` regenerative product OP-1. The approved indication is for use as an alternative to autograft in recalcitrant long bone nonunions where use of autograft is unfeasible and alternative treatments have failed. Stryker reported that commercial launch of the OP-1 Implant in the U.S. is expected to commence later this quarter.
The approval marks the third regulatory clearance for OP-1 in a major market following approvals earlier this year in Australia and the European Union for specific trauma indications. Stryker is presently marketing OP-1 in Australia and the European Union, and will pay Curis royalties from sales in all territories. Under the HDE, OP-1 Implant will be made available as a humanitarian use device. HDE program information is available at http://www.fda.gov/cdrh/ode/hdeinfo.html. OP-1, which stands for Osteogenic Protein, is a class of proteins produced by the human body to form tissue during development, and is used in adults to repair and remodel damaged tissue, such as bone.
"Regenerative medicine products, such as OP-1, hold tremendous promise for enhancing the body`s natural mechanisms for self-repair and regeneration. Curis is a pioneer in this field and has a broad portfolio with multiple clinical indications in development," said Daniel Passeri, President and Chief Executive Officer of Curis. "The past several years have resulted in many advances and breakthroughs in the human genome project, stem cell biology and the understanding of the human body`s capacity to repair and regenerate itself when damaged by trauma or disease. At Curis, we believe the next several years will see the realization of that promise with a new generation of therapeutic products being launched to treat many of the debilitating diseases affecting the world`s aging population. OP-1 demonstrates that the first wave of these next generation therapies are already being used by physicians treating patients."
"The third major market approval for OP-1 confirms our confidence in the role of regenerative therapeutics in the future of medicine," stated Doros Platika, MD, Chairman of Curis. "The approval further validates the Curis approach for creating a successful and sustainable biopharmaceutical company by combining near term product revenue opportunities with a productive discovery engine that has generated two new INDs this year and a broad portfolio of product candidates at various stages of development."
About Curis
Curis is developing products that restore health through regenerative therapeutics. Curis utilizes technologies and insights gained through the study of developmental biology to facilitate the discovery and development of new approaches to repair and regeneration of tissues and organs damaged by disease and/or trauma. Through these discoveries, Curis has developed a pipeline of promising new therapies for the treatment of major diseases, including neurological disorders, diabetes, oncology, cardiovascular and renal disease.
The Curis technology platform and product development pipeline is based on developmental biology signaling pathways, adult stem cells, and cell-based therapies. The Curis research program is conducted both internally and through alliances, partnerships and joint ventures with companies and organizations including Aegera Therapeutics and McGill University, Montreal, Canada; Micromet AG, Munich, Germany; and Elan Corporation, Dublin, Ireland.

hi michael

@esco7

Periodontale (Gebiss/Kiefer) Krankheiten: Phase II
Wirbelkörperfusion (Anm: Vereinigung zweier Wirbelkörper z.B. nach komplizierten Brüchen oder bei Wirbelgleiten): Phase II
2) Chondrogel

4) Small molecule/skin cancer
Dazu gehören Parkinson, Alzheimer, Polyneuropathie, MS, AML
Weitere Anw.möglichkeiten: Haarwachstum und Knorpelheilung

OP-1 product platform
Mögl. Anw.:
Schlaganfall
Nierenversagen

Was gibt es da Neues?

Was meint ihr??
Grüße
Skaya

Hi,

Curis empfehlenswert
BioTech-World

Curis Proprietary Product, Hedgehog, Demonstrated to be a Key Factor in Formation of Nerve Cells
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Jul 30, 2002 (BW HealthWire) -- Curis, Inc. (NASDAQ: CRIS) -
A recently published paper entitled "Directed Differentiation of Embryonic Stem
Cells into Motor Neurons," that will appear in the August 9, 2002 issue of Cell,
demonstrates that Curis` proprietary hedgehog product can induce stem cells to
differentiate into motor neurons, an important implication for the treatment of
neurodegenerative diseases. Motor neurons project from the spinal cord to
muscle, thereby controlling movement, and are the cells that die in certain
types of degenerative disease, such as Lou Gehrig`s disease (amyotrophic lateral
sclerosis or ALS) and Spinal Muscular Atrophy.
The paper describes a method for efficiently directing the differentiation of
mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells into a fully differentiated type of neuron. Dr.
Thomas Jessell and his team of scientists at Columbia University College of
Physicians and Surgeons, together with Dr. Jeffery Porter of Curis, carried out
this validating discovery research.
The research shows that the hedgehog pathway, a key regulator of embryonic
development, is required for the formation of several different classes of
neurons. Among these are motor neurons and dopaminergic neurons (the class of
cells that die in Parkinson`s disease). Curis scientists have also identified
potent and specific activators of the pathway. Recently, they have synthesized a
class of orally available, small molecule activators of hedgehog signaling. The
work published in Cell relied on the use of the small molecules to uniformly
activate the hedgehog pathway in the ES cells and induce them to differentiate
into motor neurons.
"This paper has several important implications," said Dr. Lee Rubin, Chief
Scientific Officer at Curis. "First of all, as pointed out by Jessell et al., it
provides a general method for stimulating differentiation of ES cells that
should be useful in creating various kinds of cells, including dopaminergic and
cholinergic neurons, that can be used for drug screening and, ultimately, for
cell replacement therapy for neurodegenerative disease. It also highlights the
usefulness of small molecule regulators of the hedgehog pathway identified at
Curis. These molecules themselves have significant effects in preclinical models
used to study different neural diseases and will be described shortly in a
series of papers and presentations."
"This study further validates the importance of being able to precisely control
signaling pathways that are important in development," said Daniel R. Passeri,
President and Chief Executive Officer of Curis. "These signaling pathways
continue to be important in various diseases in adults and form the foundation
of the drug discovery work platform in place at Curis."
"This study expands our understanding of key signaling processes that are
involved in the study of the development of nerve cells and suggests a general
strategy for conversion of other types of neurons," said Dr. Thomas M. Jessell.

hi
no risk no fun

good trades.
good trades.
hi

Curis Inc Says Sonic Hedgehog Protein Effective In Study
Wednesday September 18, 10:46 am ET
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -(Dow Jones)- Curis Inc. (NasdaqNM:CRIS - News) said data from a primate model study demonstrated the therapeutic potential of the Sonic Hedgehog protein against Parkinson`s disease and other nervous system disorders.
In a press release Wednesday, the company said the preclinical information suggested reduced behavioral impairments and neural loss. Animals treated with the protein showed "significant" improvement in tests of locomotion and preserved brain tissue that is normally lost with disease progression.
The findings reaffirmed results from another study that showed treatment with the Sonic Hedgehog protein reduces behavioral impairments and neural loss in a model of Parkinson`s disease. Results from the previous study were disclosed in February.
Curis is developing several small-molecule compounds that mimic the effects of the Sonic Hedgehog protein for several neural indications.
In July 2001, Curis and Elan Corp. (ELN) formed a joint venture to develop Hedgehog therapeutics for the treatment of neurological disorders.
Nasdaq shares of Curis recently traded up 6.9%, or 4 cents, to 62 cents on volume of 22,500 shares. Average daily volume is 120,687 shares.

Sonic Hedgehog Reduces Behavioral Impairment in a Primate Model of Parkinson`s Disease
Wednesday September 18, 8:30 am ET
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 18, 2002--Curis, Inc. (NASDAQ: CRIS - News) Promising new findings demonstrate the therapeutic potential of Sonic Hedgehog protein (Shh) under development by Curis for Parkinson`s Disease and other nervous system disorders. The study showed treatment with Shh in a pre-clinical primate model of Parkinson`s Disease reduced behavioral impairments and neural loss.
Parkinson`s Disease currently affects about 1,000,000 people with an estimated cost of over 5.6 billion dollars. These findings have significant potential implications. Current therapies address the alleviation of symptoms without limiting the progressive nature of the disease. Curis is currently developing several small molecule compounds that mimic the effects of Shh for several neural indications. These potent compounds show promising pharmacological properties, including the ability to cross the blood brain barrier after oral administration, and thus represent novel candidate therapeutics.
The study, published in the September 18, 2002 volume of Neuroscience by Dr. Peter Jenner of Kings College London, utilized the MPTP model in which dopamine-producing neurons are damaged by administration of a toxin to the brain, resulting in behavioral impairments representative of Parkinson`s Disease. Animals treated with Shh showed significant improvement in tests of locomotion and preserved brain tissue that is normally lost with disease progression. Furthermore, after treatment with L-DOPA, animals that had been previously treated with Shh showed significantly better movement than did non-Shh-treated controls.
"These findings further demonstrate and expand the therapeutic potential of Shh for Parkinson`s Disease as previously reported in rodent models in Curis` press release of February 25, 2002," said Daniel R. Passeri, President and Chief Executive Officer of Curis. "The results from this study support our intention to bring our small molecule candidates to the next stage of drug development."
On July 18, 2001, Curis announced that it had formed a business venture with Elan Corporation, Plc ("Elan"), that is committed to the research and development of molecules that stimulate the Hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway. The business venture is focused upon the development of therapeutics targeting a number of neurological disorders, including Parkinson`s disease. The data published in the Neuroscience article preceded the establishment of the business venture but played an important role in defining the focus of the collaboration.

Rigel, Curis, Sonus, Cell Therapeutics, American Pharmaceutical
The news from some of the smaller capo biotechs continues to be interesting as valuations continue to plunge. Rigel (RIGL) announced the beginning of a clinical trial in the UK for a company owned product, R112, designed to interfere with IgE signaling through the mast cell. The drug, which is administered by nasal spray is designed for the allergic rhinitis market and is a first in its class. This is a huge market and is currently dominated by intranasal steroid preparations A US IND is planned by end of the year. An HCV (hepatitis C) drug is planned for IND filing next year and the ligase program should have a clinical candidate for the following year. Rigel is now transitioning from a functional genomics company to a drug delivery company. With $45 million in the bank and a few more deals they should be able to survive the current investment climate-the cash crunch is the downside for almost all smaller biotechs. I have disclosed in previous alerts that I have a substantial founders position in Rigel and I have not sold any of my position. In any sort of reasonable market this news would have caused the stock to move up instead some sellers sold on the good news. The early stage UK study should be done shortly and results will be used in the US filing. A near-term event would be good safety data and any hints of efficacy in the allergic rhinitis indication. News on the safety and efficacy of R112 should be forthcoming by early next year-positive news on both fronts will certainly push RIGL much higher. Another possible near-term event would be partnering the HCV program. In an ideal world RIGL would wait till Phase II data is in but under current conditions we might anticipate an earlier deal for less depending on the level of cash stress. Again I want readers to be aware about my founders position in this company. I think the stock is absurdly cheap at $1.94. If you are currently holding Rigel I would be patient. Potential investors can take the gamble now or wait for the early R112 results.
A few other small caps made news today including Curis (CRIS) and Sonus (SNUS). At current valuations I like both of these companies. I like the Sonus (Toscosol) Paclitaxel Phase II data that was just presented. The company looked at four different types of tumors and all patients had bad disease that was refractory to many of the current chemotherapy agents. The results were particularly striking in bladder cancer where 89% of patients had disease control (stable disease and partial remissions). All the patient groups were small with about 18 patients in each cohort so what we are really looking at are trends. No complete responses were reported in any group. Toscosol is a vitamin E encapsulated formulation of the best selling chemotherapy drug, Taxol. It appears to have inherent advantages of regular Taxol in that is less toxic and more efficacious (can be dosed higher). There may also be some theoretical advantage form inhibition of an efflux pathway. This is a crowded field with Cell Therapeutics (CTIC) and American Pharmaceutical (APPX) already in Phase III trials with Taxol knock-offs (clearly APPX has a very interesting product). The low valuation of Sonus and the possible increased efficacy make it an attractive early stage but very speculative investment. Sonus will have to raise money ($22 million as of 6/30) to fund further trials. To really make any of these drugs commercially viable trials will have to show efficacy in Taxol refractory tumors and so far APPX and Sonus both seem to have preparations that look promising. It will not be enough to just have a Taxol alternative that is easier to give and possibly less toxic. I think insurance companies will balk at a premium price (Taxol is now generic) unless you have a drug that is more effective.
Curis (CRIS) also had some interesting preclinical data further validating the importance of the sonic hedgehog pathway (Shh- see archives). The latest report shows that in a rodent model of Parkinson`s disease treatment with Shh protects against neural loss and behavioral abnormalities. Other recent findings indicate that abnormalities in the Shh pathway drive a childhood brain tumor (medulloblastoma) and basal cell carcinoma. I continue to believe that this is a very important pathway in human disease and Curis is certainly in a good position to exploit it. Recent insider buying is also a positive. On the negative side are a high burn rate that is being corrected, management that hasn`t delivered, and a deal with Elan for Shh (Elan is going through a very difficult period and will shed many of their partnerships and if nothing else will end up being a weaker partner). The question is will this company come through the cash crunch-insiders seem to think they will.
As a matter of disclosure I want all readers to know that I own many of the stocks I write about in my personal account and always maintain a long position. I also write about many of these stocks first in Biotech Insight, a web-based newsletter published at www.biotechinsight.com. The following is further disclosure: Dr. Garren is a member of Biotech Insight Management, LLC, a California registered investment adviser and the general partner of a hedge fund that invests in biotechnology companies, including some of the companies discussed in this newsletter (www.biotechmgt.com). Garren is a member of the advisory board of DBGI (Diversified Biotech Group, Inc.) and the chief biotechnology strategist. Garren also consults for following: 1- a second large hedge fund focused on the healthcare industry with a heavy emphasis on biotech. I recommend many of these same stocks to the investment funds mentioned above. It should be noted that hedge funds could go both long and short on any particular stock. Many of these disclosures were detailed in the fine print, which usually never gets read. The information in this column under no circumstances serves as a recommendation to buy or sell stocks.
