Salomon Smith Barney ~ August 23, 2000
(short version follows)
August 22, 2000 SUMMARY
* Met with Priceline`s CEO Dan Schulman yesterday. We
INTERNET - sense that the travel business is stronger than expected,
E-COMMERCE that the communications businesses will ramp PCLN`s
Tim Albright profitability in 2H `00, and that financial services
impact 1H `01.
* The travel business could surprise investors, driven by
stronger than expected air travel and growing car rental
business. We are projecting $345 mm in travel rev. on
2.5mm transactions. Q3 #`s: $368 mm in rev. and ($0.00)
EPS.
* Big focus on communications categories. Long distance,
a spread revenue business, is a high profit business (we
model a 23% standalone op margin). Look for metrics on Q3
report, launch of cellular in Q4 and local in Q1.
* Financial services ready for prime time in 1H `01 with
credit cards, insurance and mortgages contributing
meaninfully to the gross profit line.
* Reiterating Buy (1H) rating. Under-anticipated upside
potential in Q3, new growth categories poised for
take-off, and the prospect of profits get us jazzed.
First Call Consensus EPS: 12/00E ($0.04); 12/01E $0.21; 12/02E NA
OPINION
We spent some time with Priceline`s CEO (and COO) Dan Schulman yesterday and
left with the sense that Priceline`s business and its stock are existing in
two entirely disconnected worlds. Priceline`s Q3 results may surprise some
who expect a flat top line, especially in the core travel business. Meanwhile
we sense that the underlying profitability of many of Priceline`s new
categories is unrecognized. We look for metrics related to the communications
business, which for now is long distance but will also include cellular and
local telecom services, to be disclosed. The pending launch of cellular in
Q4/Q1 should cause the relative upside to long distance that hotels caused
for airfare. Finally, we believe that the financial service products, which
currently encompass mortgages/home refinancing/home equity products, but will
expand to insurance products and and credit card offers, will be an
additional leg of growth fo the first half of 2001. As investors get
comfortable with margin expansion and top line drivers, the stock should perk
up.
Great Valuation Level: Priceline`s stock has been so washed out of late,
there has been little focus on the underlying economic franchise that this
company has built. We all know that Priceline has a high-ROIC, native
Internet business model with alot of transaction value pumping through its
servers on a daily basis. A little bit of revenue upside in the core business
may bring on profits sooner and steeper than expected. What we are even more
excited about is the prospect of the highly profitable communications
business really getting traction. This would give us increased visibility in
the earnings power of the Priceline model, a model which we believe can earn
something in the range of $0.80 to $1.00 in 2002. Given the leverage and
scale that Priceline enjoys, we`d be aggressive buyers right now, at under
$25.00.

Danke Onkel Sam,

schon längst darauf eingestellt, also du wirst einen
