HONG KONG (CBS.MW) - Asian Internet firm Chinadotcom Corp. said Friday that it has cut 48 jobs in China to eliminate redundancies.
The company said the positions cut include 17 from editorial, 10 from marketing, and 21 from administrative and support functions. Twenty-eight jobs were cut in Beijing, 16 in Shanghai and 10 in Guangzhou.
It was not immediately known how much the company would save from eliminating the positions, or if further cuts are expected.
Chinadotcom (CHINA: news, msgs) said in a statement it would help the employees find new jobs.
The company`s stock up 3/16 to 15 3/4 Thursday.

The Dot Gets Smart

[25 August 2000] chinadotcom [Nasdaq:CHINA] has two things many of its competitors don`t have: time and money.

While all of China`s major portals are now public, therefore creating their own time-money continuum, the Dot has more money, and therefore, more time. It also provides an additional advantage: $500 million can make up for a lot of mistakes, such as a lack of vision or strategy or revenue. It even makes you profitable when it earns interest.

The company`s recent moves show a distinct increase in its business IQ. Rather than make seemingly scattered investments and partnerships that lack coherence, chinadotcom`s acquisitions and other deals give us a somewhat clearer picture of its future.

Despite positioning itself as a more regional player, chinadotcom`s focus of late has been the country that is its namesake. First there was the acquisition of chinaholiday.com. Not just any old China travel site, the company has an exclusive franchise to sell China Travel Service (CTS) services. While it doesn`t have the vise-like lock on China`s travel industry it did earlier in its history, CTS pulls a lot of weight and would be a valuable partner as red-tape scissors for any further online travel ventures.

chinadotcom entered a JV with wireless technology firm InfoIsLive.com, in which it already holds a 30 percent stake. If the pan-Asian holding company wants to ride the ultimate pan-Asian trend, wireless is the way to go. The move was Dot`s third in two months, including the WAPification of hongkong.com by New World Mobility. The usually tight-lipped dotcompany has hinted that they`ll be doing a lot more with wireless, especially in China, which just elbowed Japan out of the way to become Asia`s largest mobile phone market.

Add to this chinadotcom`s partnership in July with Planet Payment, an e-commerce facilitator, for the former to take the latter into China. The Planet Payment arrangement may also eventually extend to wireless, given some of the m-commerce initiatives that company has already undertaken.

Slowly but surely, the Dot is answering questions like: got payment? got wireless? While the Planet Payment deal is a page from chinadotcom`s old play book of importing Western players into the China market, this is a practical move that will directly benefit any move towards e-commerce that chinadotcom makes in China, and perhaps elsewhere in Asia.

This week has been a significant one for chinadotcom. First, it brought competitor Sohu.com to heel when the Beijing-based portal signed a seven-year exclusive global advertising deal with dotsubsidiary 24/7 Media Asia. Sohu.com CEO Charles Zhang stressed "co-opetition" and the strength of Sohu`s domestic Chinese sales force, and denied rumors of an ultimate acquisition. But for a one portal to put the business that represents the bulk of their revenue--advertising--largely into a competitor`s hands means one thing: Resistance is Futile. You Will Be Assimilated.

chinadotborg closed the week by announcing an increase in their stake of 24/7 Media, to seven percent, making them the ad network`s largest shareholder. This is a serious move, one that goes beyond even the regional deals we`re accustomed to seeing.

(Author`s mea culpa: this writer is kicking himself in the buttocks repeatedly for not having seen this coming. At the Sohu.com press conference, 24/7 Media Asia`s MD for Greater China, Sandy Kwong, introduced the various products that 24/7 (Asia) would be offering to Sohu as part of their agreement. A more astute observer would have realized that up to that point, 24/7 Media Asia only had access to the parent company`s banner technology, not other tools such as 24/7 Mail. An exclusive is a terrible thing to waste.)

Now, let`s not get too excited. chinadotcom is still not profitable, interest or no interest, and allegations of wrong-doing that regularly plague the company, such as those recently reported by Singapore-based gunslingers TechBuddha continue to follow it around, although to date none have stuck. However, lately, instead of acting like an 800-pound gorilla, chinadotcom seems to be evolving more towards an upright primate.

NEW YORK, Aug 25 (Reuters) - Pan-Asian Internet firm Chinadotcom Corp. (CHINA.O) said Friday it has cut 48 jobs in China as the Internet market there consolidates.
The Hong Kong-based company said in a statement that of the job reductions, 22 were in its Beijing operation, 16 in Shanghai and 10 in Guangzhou. Seventeen editorial and 10 marketing jobs were cut, but the majority of the staff cuts were administrative.

A company spokesman was not immediately available for further comment.

Chinadotcom said it would actively assist those laid off in their search for new employment. It added that it was committed to continue strengthening its business in China to capitalise on the enormous potential of the Internet in that market.

Earlier this month the company said its second-quarter cash operating loss widened, but beat analysts` estimates. Revenues grew 52 percent, even while the industry faced consolidation.

China by about 10 percent in a move reflecting consolidation
among Internet firms in the country.
Some 48 people lost their jobs in the Hong Kong-based
company`s China operations, which employs about 500 people, a
U.S.-based company spokesman said.
The firm said in a statement that 22 people were laid off
in Beijing, 16 in Shanghai and 10 in Guangzhou. Seventeen
editorial and 10 marketing employees were laid off, but the
majority of the layoffs were administrative.
Chinadotcom is beefing up other parts of its business, such
as Web services and tools and online advertising services, the
spokesman said.
The company earlier this month reported that its
second-quarter cash operating loss widened. It nonetheless beat
analysts` estimates as revenues grew 52 percent during a period
of industry consolidation.
Several other Internet firms in China have pared back staff
in recent months.
Internet online media network hongkong.com, a unit of
Chinadotcom, announced this month it was laying off about 40
out of its 200 employees while China-focused online media
network tom.com (8001.HK) fired 80 of its 500 employees in late
July.
City Telecom (Hong Kong) Ltd. (1137.HK) cut 200 jobs in its
broadband Internet access arm and two Internet publishing units
of Next Media Ltd. (0282.HK) also cut about 100 jobs in July.
Shares of Chinadotcom fell 5/16 to 15-7/16 in early trade
on Nasdaq, well below its year high of 78.

Die chinesische Internetseite Chinadotcom wird in den kommenden Wochen bis zu 48 Arbeitsplätze streichen. Dies entspricht ca. 10% der gesamten chinesischen Belegschaft.
Die Entlassungen finden im Zuge einer allgemeinen Konsolidierung des Internetsektors in Asien statt. Auch schon die Tochtergesellschaft hongkong.com musste in den letzen Wochen einige ihrer Angestellten entlassen.

Die chinadotcom Aktie verliert heute 2% auf 15,5 Dollar.

在香港網（8006）(8006.HK - 新聞 - 公司資料宣布裁員不足半個月內，其母公司中華網昨亦宣布裁減四十八名員工，但有趣的是同時兼任上述兩間公司主席的錢果豐，早前還表示中華網沒有裁員計畫，昨日他仍然強調，網站不能單靠裁員來保持盈利，並澄清香港網其實只裁減十名員工，另三十七名員工被安排轉職到中華網及美國在線。不過，在兩個網站均裁員下，未知兩個網站之間將如何安排員工轉職。
旗下香港網裁員不足半月 根據公布，中華網今次共裁減四十八名國內員工，包括北京二十二名，上海十六名及廣州十名，當中十七名屬編採人員，十名屬市場推廣人員，其餘二十一名則屬行政及後勤支援部門。
錢果豐在本月初曾揚言公司沒有裁員計畫，結果本月十八日香港網卻宣布裁減四十七名員工，當時錢氏還指之後該公司再無裁員計畫，怎知言猶在耳，在短短一星期後中華網便宣布裁員。
匯港通訊昨日引述錢國豐表示，早前香港網其實只裁減十名員工，另三十七名員工已被安排轉職。他並指出，網站不能單靠裁員來保持盈利，還要提高員工生產力。
東魅堅持不派「大信封」

中華網強調，今次裁員並不影響公司發展中國市場的策略，中國的互聯網市場潛力龐大，中華網依然會繼續加強在中國的投資，同時會協助被裁減員工轉職。

Macht nix: Bei Strato und 1&1 gibt`s .com-Domänen für Einsneunundneunzig, und schon ist man ein dotcom. Jaja, so einfach ist das. Bzw., wie beim Faselblättchen Net Investor, ein `Dot.com`, also ein `Dotdotcom`, was ungeheuer clever ist.

Ich hab mal jemanden getroffen, der in einer Bücherei ein HTML-2.0-Buch stehen sah!"Und sofort klappen reihenweise die Gully-Deckel zur Seite, mindestens 20 Geldgeber springen heraus und überhäufen den Unternehmer mit Gold. Es gibt Mitmenschen, die müssen einen Namen für ihr neues Unternehmen finden, zum Beispiel für einen ihrer weiteren, wichtigen Start-ups aus dem Bereich Internet. Sie erkennen übrigens Personen, die gerade einen Namen für ein Unternehmen suchen, daran, dass alle ihre Sätze mit einem .de oder .com enden. "WogehtsnhierzumAusgangPunktDe?" -- "HerrKellner,daistneFliegeinderSuppe.org!" -- "SchatzBitteweckmichwennDufertigbist.ch..."
Und der Name muss natürlich in eine Domain passen. Und toll sein. Merkfähig. Kurz. Aussprech.bar Etc.org Also muss ein Braimstorming.com her, damit der Namen mit dem team.org richtig engagiert durchgekaut werd.en kann.
Die Leute mit dem BwAküFi (Bundeswehr-Abkürzungs-Fimmel) legen los und nach dem mot.to "In der Kürz..." schreiben sie Firmennamen wie GNX, BNN, SOS, MIT, ROM, SOD, EON auf den Flipchart, mit der Begründung, IBM sei ja immerhin... kriegen aber vom Web-Admin die Fresse voll, weil alle Drei-Buchstaben-Domains bekanntlich schon weg sind.
Wenn ein paar richtig Bekloppte im Team sitzen, kommen jetzt so Namen wie allestop.de, istmirklar, findichgut.de, findichbesser.de, findichscheisse.de, dasistkrank.de, herdamit.de, schaumalrein.de, kuckmalhier, wirhamsbilliger, ichbesorgsdir und so weiter. Man kann sich kaum vorstellen, wie viele dieser Namen auf Reißbrettern standen und gottlob nie umgesetzt wurden. Under anderem auch deine-hand-in-meiner-hose.de
Die Modernisten kombinieren die Silben cyber, hi, org, tech, zine, dot, soft, tele, syn, micro, macro, pico, nano, eIrgendwas, mIrgendwas, iIrgendwas und zahlreiche andere. Heraus kommen Rohrkrepierer wie iMicro, nanoOrg, cybertech, orgazine, hislash, cyberdot, dottercyb und so weiter.de
Die Anglophilen kontern mit givemejack, suckmycop, havesomefun, notmyblowjob, stocks-r-us, letbuysit, letsfuckit, letshackit, letscrackit sowie mit makemyday, b-my-guest und fuck-you-and-the-horse-you-rode-in-on. Dot-com.
Die Buchhalter und Controller wollen dagegen Zahlen sehen, schlagen cyber9, 19tech, heaven17, illumina23 und ähnlichen Shit vor (und ganz viel mit 24: uhren24, babies24, toiletten24, etc.), und übertreffen sich nach ein paar Energy-Drinks mit 1for1, one4one, RU-over-18, 17plus4 (das Blackjack-Portal!) und - im vergeblichen Versuch, die Bitheads anzuschleimen - mit www.01010101.com.

Kern ihres Angebots ist eine Technik, die sonst keiner hat: Sonst könnte das einmalige Angebot, nennen wie es eine Auktion, eine Suchmaschine, ein Portal, eine Jobvermittlung, ein Schnäppchenratgeber, eine Community oder eine Meinungsplattform, ein B2B- oder ein B2C-Marktplatz und ähnlich dürftigen Ausfluss ja jeder nachmachen. Da sollte man schon eine Million reinstecken. Gute Idee, dafür haben sie sich jeweils `ne halbe Millionen Gehalt verdient. Noch zwei Millionen für zwanzig Angestellte, PCs, Notebooks, Videokonferenzsysteme, schicke Möbel und italienische Designerlampen sowie Jojobaöl-getränktes Klopapier (rosa, nicht unähnlich der Financial Times).Bleiben zehn Millionen. Die investieren sie ins Marketing: Corporate Identity, Werbung, Banner, bunte Seiten im Spiegel, ach ne, lieber in der Wirtschaftswoche, plus Werbespots im Fernsehen, natürlich mit Sport-Stars, Fernsehstars, Pornostars und so weiter. Wichtig dabei: Neue Worte schaffen.
Zum Beispiel:
E-Business? - Gähn. Kommt von IBM, ist gleich uralt. Da könnte mal ja gleich ne Garage fotographieren und behaupten, man wär ein kleines Startup voll mit innovativen Mädelsz und Kerlchen, etwa so wie Hewlett-Packard, das Drucker-Amt.
M-Business? - Nö, aber wie wäre es mit Z-Business! - Portal? - Ach nein, hmm, denn wir haben ja ein Portal für mobile User... beamt nicht weg... also lieber ein Mortal! (Sieht aber blöd aus, das Wort, deswegen wird in der CI verankert, das ganze müsse künftig m.0RT_AL heißen.)Und immer schön im Trend: `m.0RT_AL setzt auf Linux, SAP und WAP`, `m.0RT_AL erstellt eine Internet-Todesliste`, `m.0RT_AL fordert Steuererleichterungen für m.0RT_AL`, `Bei m.0RT_AL sind alle Mitarbeiter gleich, auch die Chefs`, `m.0RT_AL stellt Inder ein`, `m.0RT_AL animiert Mitarbeiter, Kinder zu kriegen` (ja!, dann würde in Startups endlich mal was gemacht, was Hand und Fuß hätte!)... etc. pepe.Doch die Site ist ein Flop. Schuld sind, das ergibt eine schnelle Beratung in der Kneipe um die Ecke, Werbeagentur, Webdesign-Agentur, Webtechnik-Agentur, PR-Agentur und - natürlich - die aktuelle Regierung. Die dynamischen Fünf jammern ein bisschen im Fernsehen herum, feuern die Agenturen, die sie dort reinbrachten und heuern ersatzweise noch teurere an. Ihren Geldgeber faseln sie mit Second-Mover- und Delayed-Market-Penetration-Advantage voll und schwätzen ihm noch mal 15 Millionen Prima: Gibt erst mal ne fette Gehalterhöhung und ein paar neue Firmenwägen - die alten müsste man sonst ja mal waschen. Und eine neue Corporate Identity sowie ne Runde Pizza für die Mitarbeiter mit den warmen Worten: "Hey, wir haben hier alle einen guten Job gemacht"!

Die Site floppt weiter. Die dynamischen Fünf schließen die sonst immer offenen Türen ihrer echt lockeren New-Economy-Büros und beschließen: `Einfach ignorieren! Wenn wir den Konkurs nicht sehen, dann sieht der Konkurs uns auch nicht. Basteln wir lieber an unserem Börsengang!`
Für den betriebwirtschaftlichen Kram, die Suche nach Vorständen, die Bankberater und die Werbung für den Börsengang verpulvern sie die verbliebenen 10 Millionen. Die besten Leute haben inzwischen schon gekündigt, aber der Ausschuss, der noch da ist, bleibt um so treuer, denn sie geiern bereits nach den Stock Options, also cool bleiben: Die würden auch auf den Strich gehen, um die Firma zu retten. Und an die Presse geht eine provokante Meldung, dass Deutschland mehr Inder braucht und die aktuelle Regierung all die jungen Unternehmen schikaniert - das bringt weitere Presse-Clippings in den Nörgelblättern.
Dann ist es soweit: Der Börsengang naht. Die fünf Unternehmer labern ihrem Venture-Kapitalisten etwas von Late-Mover-Advantage vor und pressen ihm eine Pre-IPO-Geldspritze ab. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt sollte das Net-Quintett zumindest verfängliche Videos von ihm und dieser teuren Domina haben, sonst gibt es keinen Pfennig. Aber die fünf haben ja vorgesorgt und entsprechendes arrangiert, insofern klappt alles. Der Börsenkurs steigt, per Familiy-and-Friends-Option hat vorher jeder noch seine Mutti satt mit Aktien versorgt.

mit dem, was alle wollen kann ich leider nicht dienen.Es gibt weder steigende Kurse ,noch Meldungen die dazu betragen könnten.Die Meldung über die Entlassungenen bei china wird leicht aufgebügelt wieder gehandelt,wie unten im Anhang zu sehen ist.
Die Portale machen wieder von sich reden und das ist gut,als erstes:

gibts die meines Erachtens interessanteste Meldung über Tom.com:
*Das Portal Tom.com plant eine Kapitalerhöhung um seine Expansions- und Akquisitionsabsichten zu finanzieren. .*,
das selbe hatte 8006 vor wie ihr Euch erinnern werdet,damals war das Geschrei groß und es hagelte Schelte von einigen ansäßigen Analysten.Wir alle wissen ,werden die Expansionen nach Ablauf der Stillhalteperiode angekurbelt werden,deshalb schiele ich jetzt natürlich in Richtung Tom.com,da die zeitlich gesehen vor 8006 tätig werden können und dies Rückschlüsse zu läßt.Ich bin gespannt wie die Broker auf die geplante Kapitalerhöhung bei Tom.com reagieren werden und wie die Presse argumentieren wird.Der September wird für uns entscheidend sein,soviel steht fest,es bleibt sowieso nichts anderes als abzuwarten.

LatelineNews: 2000-8-27] NEW YORK - Pan-Asian Internet firm Chinadotcom Corp. said on Friday it cut its staff in China by about 10 percent in a move reflecting consolidation among Internet firms in the country.
Some 48 people lost their jobs in the Hong Kong-based company`s China operations, which employs about 500 people, a U.S.-based company spokesman said.
The firm said in a statement that 22 people were laid off in Beijing, 16 in Shanghai and 10 in Guangzhou. Seventeen editorial and 10 marketing employees were laid off, but the majority of the layoffs were administrative.
Chinadotcom is beefing up other parts of its business, such as Web services and tools and online advertising services, the spokesman said.
The company earlier this month reported that its second-quarter cash operating loss widened. It nonetheless beat analysts` estimates as revenues grew 52 percent during a period of industry consolidation.
Several other Internet firms in China have pared back staff in recent months.
Internet online media network hongkong.com, a unit of Chinadotcom, announced this month it was laying off about 40 out of its 200 employees while China-focused online media network tom.com (8001.HK) fired 80 of its 500 employees in late July.
City Telecom (Hong Kong) Ltd. (1137.HK) cut 200 jobs in its broadband Internet access arm and two Internet publishing units of Next Media Ltd. (0282.HK) also cut about 100 jobs in July.
Shares of Chinadotcom fell 1/8 to close at 15-5/8 on Nasdaq, well below its year high of 78.

Es gibt leider oder wie auch immer nichts Neues von 8006, aber ein wenig Stoff über china hab ich doch gefunden.Meiner bescheidenen Meinung nach ist alles sehr treffend beschrieben.

Chinadotcom: On the Right Path but Moving Slowly

HONG KONG -- If Chinadotcom were as good at making profit as it has been at timing its stock offerings, the company would deserve to be at the top of every buy list in America. Although it has no earnings to speak of, Chinadotcom is sitting on piles of cash. With $561 million at the end of the first quarter and a "burn rate" (the rate at which it depletes cash) of $3 million a month, the company has literally years to get its Web businesses right. Unlike companies that had hoped to acquire other firms using pricey stock, Chinadotcom can pay cash for whatever the New Economy finally decides is a viable Internet-related business. Sitting on so much cash, the last thing the company needs to do is hard sell its prospects for earnings. "Give us a couple of quarters," COO Peter Hamilton told TSC. "We`re well on the path." And while the company`s stock, currently just below 23, is way off its high of 78 reached in March, "the market correction is creating opportunities for us," says Hamilton. He may be right: How many other Internet companies have more than a decade of cash on the balance sheet? The company may need much of that cushion. Anyone who thinks that being first mover on the Web in China is a passport to riches will be quickly disappointed by what Hamilton has to say. In China, "50% of the people using the Internet never used the Internet six months ago. So the idea that China is anytime soon going to be a major generator of revenue is still a bit misguided. `Ambitious` perhaps would be the right word," he says. Chinadotcom was first out of the gate to acquire the domain names for China.com, Hongkong.com and Taiwan.com. It was the first Chinese Internet portal to list on the Nasdaq and managed to raise more than $80 million when it went public a year ago. When the going was still good, it raised an additional $282 million in a secondary offering in January. And in March, it got another $172 million when it listed its Hongkong.com subsidiary on Hong Kong`s second board. Today, the capital markets are not nearly as happy to fork over money. In the year to March, "suddenly you woke up and you were working in a fashionable industry. And then three months ago people stopped talking to us again," says Hamilton. The reason is that like most dot-com companies, Chinadotcom still makes no money, and declines to offer firm forecasts about when it will. In fact, even some of Chinadotcom`s business partners, like Web advertising company 24/7 Media as well as insiders, including Chairman Raymond K. Chien, have filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission to sell shares. Although Chinadotcom`s three portals got most of the attention during its IPO last year, Hamilton says it was actually Chinadotcom`s "Web solutions" business in China that generated the highest revenue last year. The result: With operating revenue of just $20 million in the first quarter, Chinadotcom has a market value of $2 billion. By way of comparison, Amazon.com has revenue 28 times that of Chinadotcom`s but a market cap just nine times as big. Hamilton cautions that his company has a long way to go to catch up to the business volumes American Internet companies are already recording. "Now, in Hong Kong, we have about 3 million page views a day on Hongkong.com, which to me is very, very small. Yahoo has 300 million page views a day." What about the vast potential of China, an admittedly poor country, but an economy supposedly growing at 7% a year? For starters, consider that last year the electronic commerce market in China was worth $6 million, making this year`s probable rise to $42 million seem less than impressive, even though it amounts to 600% growth. Hamilton conceded that it would be all but impossible for China`s market to reach $3.2 billion by 2002, as forecast by International Data Corp. In China, money generated from selling things over the Internet "is not there in any real sense today," he says. As for the "Web solutions" part of the business, having leapt from sales of $2.5 million two years ago to $12 million last year, China is still "at the picks and shovels" stage in Web construction, he says. Is Chinadotcom worth buying? Not many analysts follow it, and because the official Xinhua News Agency owns part of the company, any analyst offering a negative opinion of the stock could incur the wrath of the influential news agency. Merrill Lynch, which did not underwrite Chinadotcom, has an intermediate term accumulate rating on the stock, and does not forecast operating profit until 2002. At Monday`s closing price, that gave Chinadotcom a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 133 times. For those who bought the stock at its high and have hung on, that cash cushion must at least provide some comfort as they settle in to wait for real earnings.

My letters column drew a response from Anthony Houlahan, who was "surprised that neglected to mention Chinadotcom ." Houlahan is especially curious about the portals Chinadotcom operates -- china.com, taiwan.com and hongkong.com. I didn`t mention the company because my story focused on the top Chinese Internet portals, and Chinadotcom`s flagship site, china.com, is now ranked ninth. Still, that does not mean the company is not an interesting story. When it went public a year ago it was solely a Chinese Internet portal, operating those three sites. In fact, it was the first Chinese Internet company to go public. Since then, other sites have overtaken those portals in popularity as Chinadotcom has evolved into more of a pan-regional Internet company. In addition to its portals, the company now engages in three other businesses. It operates a Web consultancy, helping, for example, companies establish sites in Asia. It also sells online advertising and, finally, it invests in other Internet businesses, serving as a kind of venture-capital house. Last week, the company posted better-then-expected revenue growth for the second quarter and announced that hongkong.com had turned a profit. The company as a whole expects to become profitable by the end of next year and in the meantime has more than $500 million in cash.Depending on when you got in, an investment in Chinadotcom could have turned out well. The stock has split twice since its IPO, and adjusted for the split the stock has gained roughly 46% in value since its debut in July 1999. This year, however, the stock is down 77% since its peak March. It now trades around 16. Meanwhile, many investors appear wary. While the company`s diversification out of the portal business might make it seem stronger, for some that move away from its core business is a weakness. "It is more risky," says Richard Gao, portfolio manager of the MDCC-Fund a pass on buying company stock. Others are wary of the Chinese Internet sector as a whole because of concerns about the same sector in the U.S. The two, they say, are inextricably linked. "Unless you believe the Internet is going to take off in the U.S., there is no reason to buy it," says Eric Ritter, manager of the DAPG Fund "The sentiment is against the Internet," he says. "That`s going to affect all the stocks." Right now, Ritter prefers Old Economy Chinese companies, like car manufacturer Brilliance China . It may not seem particularly glamorous, but its stock is up 127% this year, adjusted for an April split. Ritter says he`s singling out Chinadotcom, but since the March Nasdaq Composite Index correction, his fund has "generally been avoiding all the Asian Internet IPOs." Yet he is not completely negative. "If somebody is thinking long-term," he says. "Chinadotcom could be one of the winners." In fact, reader Zhangong Du made an interesting point in response to the same column, raising the question of whether there could be more than one winner. "China`s many provinces are like many small countries," he says. "The difference between L.A. and New York is negligible compared to the difference between Beijing and Shanghai or Shanghai and Guangzhou. You feel like you are in different countries [despite] the same written language." "It is therefore unwise to think there would be only one winner," he concludes. Zhangong may be onto something. But at this point, none of the Chinese Internet plays are looking like winners for the near future.
