Network Plus Corp. (Nasdaq/NMS:NPLS - news), a leading network-based integrated communications provider (ICP) today announced record financial results for the quarter ended September 30, 2000 despite a work stoppage by Verizon during the quarter. Total revenues for the quarter grew to $62.1 million, an increase of 58% compared to $39.3 million for the third quarter of 1999 and an increase of 14% compared to the $54.4 million for the second quarter of 2000. Local revenue grew to $17.5 million, a 25% increase over the second quarter of 2000 while data services, which includes web hosting, co-location, and broadband services, grew to $6.7 million, a 70% increase over the second quarter of 2000. The net loss per share for the third quarter was $0.39 compared to $0.33 for the third quarter of 1999 and $0.37 for the second quarter of 2000. The EBITDA loss totaled $13.9 million in the third quarter of 2000, compared to the EBITDA loss of $5.3 million from the same period in the prior year and $14.6 million in the second quarter of 2000.
``Our data business significantly contributed to the successes we had in the third quarter,`` said Robert T. Hale, Jr., President and Chief Executive Officer of Network Plus. ``Additionally, despite the obstacles created by the Verizon strike, we continue to execute on our local and bundled product strategy which fundamentally strengthens our company both operationally and financially.``
Network Plus again showed continued strong growth in access line installations quarter over quarter as total local lines for the quarter increased 27% to 149,000 and the lines on-switch increased 74% to 30,000. Approximately 80% of the total local lines are ``in footprint`` which is defined as within the first 187 targeted collocations, demonstrating our ability to capture market share in areas where the Company has deployed network infrastructure.
Other Third Quarter Highlights:
Closing of Secured Credit Facility
The Company also announced the closing of a $225 million senior secured credit facility which is expected to provide funding until the company turns cash flow positive in 2002 in accordance with its business plan. ``This facility allows us to complete the build-out of our East Coast network footprint consistent with our business plan,`` commented Robert Cobuzzi, Network Plus` Chief Financial Officer.
Three New Markets Initiated On-Net Services; Two New Sales Offices
Network Plus also began transitioning local lines on-net in three new markets including Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Hartford, CT, and Long Island, NY. Also, the company opened new sales offices in Long Island, NY and in the Hartford, CT, area.
Overcoming the Verizon Strike
Despite the Verizon strike in August, which delayed the provisioning of the local services in half of the company`s markets, Network Plus still surpassed its local line growth and revenue targets.
20 Co-Locations Turn EBITDA Positive
During the third quarter, 20 co-locations in the Network Plus`s footprint turned EBITDA positive. For these co-locations, the return on the capital investment broke even during the third quarter and will now realize a profit in quarters to come as additional lines are provisioned from these co-locations. ``These co-locations turning positive this past quarter effectively shows forward progress towards profitability,`` commented Cobuzzi.
The Company will be hosting a conference call to review third quarter results Thursday, October 26, at 8:45 a.m. eastern standard time. The number to participate is 888-209-3787 and can also be heard via the Internet on the company`s Web site at http://www.np1.com. An audio replay will be available 48 hours after original call by dialing (800) 633-8284 or (858) 812-6440 and entering the reservation number 16621904.
