Swisscom to Deliver Secure Mobile Commerce Portal On Bluestone Software`s E-business Platform

Bluestone Total-e-BusinessTM Delivers Wireless Access to European Site
J2EE and XML Support Ensure Future-Proof, Easy Integration with Site Partners

PHILADELPHIA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 13, 2000--Bluestone® Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: BLSW - news), a leader in business-to-Web and wireless technologies, today announced that Swisscom, the principal provider of telecommunications services in Switzerland, will launch its secure, mobile commerce portal on top of Bluestone`s comprehensive, standards-based Total-e-Business(TM) platform. Scheduled to go live early 2001, the all-encompassing site will rely on prestigious partners such as major Swiss banks to provide a variety of free and subscriber-based services tailored to the personal needs of consumer, business, and other mobile and desktop users.

Highlighting the Swisscom portal is its emphasis on secure, mobile access via Wireless Access Protocol (WAP) as provided by the Bluestone Internet Operating Environment(TM), the foundational architecture that underpins Bluestone`s e-business platform. Also key to the Swisscom site are Bluestone`s robust implementations of XML and Sun Microsystems` J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) specification. Both technologies promise a future-proof site that can readily assimilate new and emerging technologies, as well as easy, standards-based integration with site partners and content providers.

``Swisscom`s goal is to build the premiere European Web portal for mobile and desktop users, focused on the information and transaction needs of mobile users,`` said Urs Loher, Head of Mobile e-Business Services, Swisscom. ``The requirements for such a site are significant, and include both business and technical concerns. In addition to complete reliability and security, the site must offer robust content management and personalization. Perhaps most important, the site`s underlying Internet Operating Environment must leave open the doors for future growth - both in size and in functionality. We judged Bluestone`s Total-e-Business to be the superior e-business infrastructure, perfectly positioning us to deliver on our goal.``

Added John H. Capobianco, executive vice president of strategic planning for Bluestone Software, ``Europe is setting the stage for wireless applications and opportunities, and no one is pursuing those opportunities more aggressively than Swisscom. Our technical merits won the account, so we see their adoption of Total-e-Business as a clear sign that our Internet Operating Environment is ready for prime time in the wireless arena.``

      Bluestone Enables Europe`s Portal-to-Go

The Swisscom portal is being designed in a first phase primarily to serve WAP-based mobile users, but desktop and SMS (Short Message Service) users will also have access to the array of content and services provided by key partners. Financial portfolio access, hotel reservation services, rail station schedules and ticketing, restaurant directions, and other content and commerce services pertinent to the mobile user will be featured on the site. In a later phase, the access to the portal will be extended and adopted to other technologies such as voice. The media independence shall be emphasized by the possibility to access the portal for instance via GSM, HSCSD (High Speed Circuit Switched Data), GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) or via the Internet.

For Swisscom, Bluestone`s extensive use of XML and J2EE technologies is critical to working with the third-party partners Swisscom is relying on to supply must-have content. Specifically, XML will establish an easy-to-use, easy-to-implement communications facility for information exchange. JavaServer Pages and Servlets will facilitate content management, moving those duties out of the hands of IT personnel and into the hands of business-oriented content editors.

In addition to supplying WAP support and creating the secure, high performance deployment environment for the Swisscom site, Bluestone`s Total-e-Business will aggregate and track content. Total-e-Business also will enable the site`s high degree of personalization by letting customers state key content preferences and by providing a point of entry tailored to their specific needs.

Concluded Swisscom`s Loher, ``Sophisticated, detailed personalization will play a big role in our portal`s success. We will not only personalize content based on user-identified interest, we need to personalize based on mobile and desktop access, as well as language, including French, Italian, and German. Bluestone has demonstrated that it can effortlessly handle our personalization needs, while giving us the performance, scalability, security, and integration services that are integral to a winning site.``

Initially targeted at Swiss users, the Swisscom site will operate primarily in the national languages German, French, Italian as well as in English.
