an alle Lion-Zweifler:

(Genitalwarzen... )
Gute Geschäfte wünscht,

EVOTEC: Der Ausbruch hat gerade stattgefunden!!!!!
Robert Stephenson analyst Sam Williams, who wrote the recommendation report, explained investor interest in Heidelberg, Germany-based Lion by calling the company “incredibly sexy.”
TRPS (Tripos) is a major LEON bioinformatics partner and LEON recently invested $9 million in TRPS.
There`s more: TRPS owns 2 million ARNA shares. Plus, TRPS is Arena`s development partner for the CART program and is a joint holder of the CART patent with ARNA. Yet, the market cap of TRPS is actually less than the value of its ARNA holdings.

The biotech sector has been largely immune to the markets travails of the last couple of weeks -- but yesterday it was whacked hard, turning in the worst percentage loss of any sector. The reason was a report released yesterday by the American Academy for the Advancement of Sciences. It`s not as bad as last spring`s Clinton/Blair initiative to knock out private gene-mapping -- but it`s another assault on private research, and another call for government control.
Titled "Human Inheritable Genetic Modifications", an AAAS press release describes the report as concluding that "Inheritable gene modification research should not proceed on humans without standards and oversight." In other words, let government do it. "The report calls for the immediate appointment of a public body to oversee current research and development that can alter the human germ line."
No bombshell there -- at least not on the surface. Deliberately creating inheritable genetic changes in humans has been a bridge too far for the biotech companies experimenting with gene therapy -- the ethical and legal issues are known to be thorny. So these companies have confined their work to somatic gene therapy, that it, therapy applied only to the body of an individual patient in a way that doesn`t effect his "germ line," the genetic instructions that give him the ability to pass the modification on to his children.
But look below the surface and the bombshell emerges. According to BioCentury, the authoritative source of biotech news and analysis for institutional investors, the report claims that "Some medical procedures and experimental gene transfer technologies used today, and others under development, can inadvertently modify the human genome, and probably have caused inheritable changes..."
In other words, it`s already happening and no one`s in control of it! Sounds like the plot of a Michael Crichton novel.
Read more closely, though, and the report may have as little reality as that Crichton novel. The report states, "...it is very likely that some of the somatic transfer trials authorized by RAC [NIH`s Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee] have had unintentional or secondary impacts on the germ line... It is difficult to know, however, because to-date data ascertaining the incidence of such effects, as for example through autopsies of research subjects who have died, have not been routinely collected."
Theodore Friedman, director of the University of California San Diego Program in Human Gene Therapy (who served on the AAAS working group) told BioCentury that the report`s conclusion is over-stated. "While it is `plausible` that such modification could occur, `it probably hasn`t happened`..."
Biotech investing sure is different that the conventional tech investing most of us are used to. Deciding whether to own Intel doesn`t normally call for autopsies. But in both domains -- the biological and the electronic -- the risk of sudden and arbitrary government intervention is enormous. Just ask Microsoft. Or wait for the autopsy.

Biotech bleibt in!!!!
Affymetrix gestern + 20% !!

habe mein Biodepot etwas umgestellt:
Meinungen??
