Commerce One Gets Big Tech Software Deal

Commerce One (CMRC:Nasdaq - news) said Monday that its software will power eHitex, an Internet exchange for the high-tech industry, on a pilot basis.
The exchange, which was announced in May, is a joint initiative among several technology players, including Compaq (CPQ:NYSE - news), Hewlett-Packard (HWP:NYSE - news), Gateway (GTW:NYSE - news), AMD (AMD:NYSE - news) and Hitachi (HIT:NYSE ADR - news).
"We believe eHitex represents the premier players in the technology industry," said Chuck Donchess, chief strategy officer at Commerce One, in a statement. "We`re looking forward to helping eHitex members realize unprecedented value and adding this major new e-marketplace to the Commerce One customer roster."
eHitex founding members spend $300 billion on procurement of goods and services annually. But that amount will not likely be spent over eHitex initially. The exchange expects to conduct 500 auctions per month by December of this year.
The announcement is significant for Commerce One in two ways. First, eHitex could compete with e2open, another exchange planned for the high-tech industry. That exchange, which was founded by IBM (IBM:NYSE - news) and other competing tech firms, will run on competitor Ariba`s (ARBA:Nasdaq - news) software. Ariba, IBM and i2 Technologies (ITWO:Nasdaq - news) are in a three-way partnership in the B2B area.
Also, notably absent from Commerce One`s announcement was any mention of SAP (SAP:NYSE ADR - news), the German enterprise software maker with whom Commerce One has forged its own alliance. Donchess has said that the two partners have already won six joint customers together, though only two have been officially announced. Apparently, eHitex has chosen Commerce One alone, at least for its pilot. The company didn`t say how long the pilot would last.
Commerce One officials couldn`t immediately be reached for comment. Its shares rose 94 cents to $71.12 in midmorning Nasdaq trading.
