BD Healthcare Consulting Study Validates the Promedix E-Commerce Solution`s Ability to Reduce Specialty Medical Product Acquisition Costs Dramatically

VNTR 14.13 0.75
Promedix, a Ventro(TM) (Nasdaq:VNTR) specialty medical company and leading provider of business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce solutions for healthcare professionals, today announced the completion of a first-of-its-kind, joint study initiated by Promedix, Intermountain Health Care (IHC) and BD Healthcare Consulting and Services (BDHCS) to document and quantify the impact of implementing e-commerce solutions in a healthcare system. The study found that the Promedix solution, reduced buyer ordering time at IHC by 75 percent and produced an 83 to 86 percent savings in accounts payable and purchasing costs associated with specialty medical product procurement.
Currently, the large number of specialty suppliers used by healthcare systems causes a high degree of inefficiency in contract negotiations, ordering and overall product management. The study, directed by BD Healthcare Consulting and Services in Boston, targeted telephone orders placed by IHC for specialty medical products, because telephone orders cost roughly five times as much as an electronically placed order.
The study was conducted at two Intermountain Health Care facilities over a five-month period, between February 2000 and June 2000. The study tested the level at which the Promedix e-commerce solution could reduce the costs of order management for specialty medical product procurement. IHC is a not-for-profit system comprised of 22 hospitals and 100 clinics serving communities in Utah and Idaho.
Dramatic Reduction in Overall Buyer Time
The Promedix solution offers both Web-based and integrated methods of procurement, both of which were tested at IHC.
Web-Based Procurement -- Overall, the Promedix Web-based procurement solution reduced buyer time by approximately 25 percent because it eliminated costly telephone orders. The Promedix Web-based solution initially used by IHC demonstrated several efficiencies over phoning or faxing specialty orders. Specific advantages experienced by IHC while using the Promedix solution include: order aggregation, elimination of phone time, enhanced ability to research product information and ability to check order status any time during the order cycle.
Integrated Procurement -- IHC experienced a 75 percent reduction in buyer time, related to the procurement of specialty products, when its internal materials management system was fully integrated with the Promedix solution. In addition to reducing telephone order time, the Promedix integrated e-commerce solution eliminated the time consuming double entry method incumbent with using Web-based procurement. With the integrated solution, IHC created purchase orders one time in the IHC ERP system; and orders were then seamlessly and automatically transmitted to Promedix electronically.
Quantifying Additional Impacts
In addition to the time efficiencies IHC experienced using the Promedix solution, the study reported additional positive impacts. For example, IHC`s procurement transaction costs were reduced by 86 percent. The impact on accounts payable was just as dramatic, reducing costs associated with specialty medical product procurement by 83 percent. Since Promedix takes title to all goods ordered through its system, IHC avoided the costly process of handling multiple invoices from multiple vendors. Instead, IHC was able to order several products from multiple vendors using one purchase order. Because Promedix handled all payment issues between IHC and the vendors, IHC`s accounts payable reduced the time spent managing orders.
"The study identified the significant value of the Promedix e-commerce solution for the ordering of specialty medical products," said Richard Beach, IHC Corporate Materials Management. "The integration of IHC`s existing ERP procurement system with the Promedix e-commerce platform was the key in making the solution realistic for us. The next steps are to fine tune the processes, increase suppliers and integrate additional IHC facilities into Promedix."
"This study demonstrates that IHC users experienced unprecedented efficiency gains while using the fully integrated e-commerce solution of Promedix," said Thomas Hughes, vice president, BD Healthcare Consulting Services. "The study indicated that, an integrated e-commerce solution can dramatically improve and simplify the buying process. By reducing the traditional ordering process using fax or phone for specialty products, which is the most difficult and inefficient area for IHC and other healthcare systems, the Promedix solution was shown to have a significantly positive impact for IHC."
"Promedix is the first e-commerce company to deliver on its promise of executing the first integrated transaction. Based on the BDHCS findings at IHC, using the Promedix solution creates measurable savings and vital opportunities for streamlining purchasing operations in healthcare institutions," said Barrie Keiser, president and general manager, Promedix.

Webcast Featuring Panel of Ariba and Commerce One Customers Hurwitz Group Checklist Will Help Companies Evaluate Buy-Side Platforms and Identify Strategies for Next Generation Buy-Side Solutions
FRAMINGHAM, Mass., Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Hurwitz Group is hosting an e- Procurement webcast presentation "Ariba and Commerce One: The Battle Spreads Beyond e-Procurement" on Tuesday, October 3, from 1:00 to 2:15 p.m. EDT. The webcast will predict the future of e-Procurement, discuss Ariba`s and Commerce One`s strategies for next-generation buy-side solutions, and give attendees a checklist for evaluating buy-side platforms.
)
The online seminar will feature Hurwitz Group`s Heather Ashton, Director, Electronic Business Strategies and Bill Eisele, Analyst, Electronic Business Strategies, as well as corporate executives -- Peter DiLaura from Ventro Corporation and Amar Singh from Simplexis -- who are marketplace service providers that utilize Ariba and Commerce One. Ariba and Commerce One are two leading companies that helped define the e-Procurement market and raise the bar on customer expectations for web-based enterprise applications.
"In the past 18 months, the number of corporate purchasing departments utilizing e-Procurement solutions has exploded," said Heather Ashton, Director, e-Business Strategies, Hurwitz Group, Inc. "Proliferating across nearly every industry, this growth has created chaotic shifts in the e-Procurement market."
"Vendors are trying to keep pace with the unique demands of vertical markets by developing solutions that support the emerging business models for buy-side, including marketplaces, exchanges, and dynamic pricing," she said. "Hurwitz Group believes that the evolution of the buy-side platform will be the catalyst for the next era in e-Procurement`s brief history."
During the webcast, Hurwitz Group analysts will discuss topics such as:
-- What are the similarities - and differences - between the leading
vendors in this market, namely Ariba and Commerce One?
-- What will the rapidly-shifting landscape for e-Procurement and buy-side
platform solutions look like a year from now?
-- What business drivers are influencing organizations` decisions to
select and implement e-Procurement and buy-side platform solutions?
"Vendors of buy-side technology are rapidly repositioning themselves as providers of marketplace platforms. In the race to dominate this market, e-Procurement pioneers Ariba and Commerce One are aggressively forming partnerships and alliances to be the first to deliver on this bigger vision," Ashton said.
"The savviest procurement managers will soon have the opportunity to reap the benefits of this new market direction," she said. "However, it is critical for them to choose wisely in deciding which e-Procurement vendor to align themselves with to realize the cost savings and improved efficiencies that are being promised."
Related to e-Procurement, Hurwitz Group areas of analysis and research include supply-web technologies and e-Procurement technologies, as well as international e-Commerce, e-Procurement, customer relationship management (CRM), supply chain management (SCM), business intelligence (BI), and other e- Business applications.
Participation in the event is free. To register online, go to www.hurwitz.com/eprocurement/. All webcast attendees will receive a complimentary copy of Hurwitz Group`s report, "Market Segmentation for e- Procurement."
