Semi equipment stocks did well in the 90s. Have we now entered the decade for fiber optics? (Instock, New York)
New York City - Sep 21 - Cheaper, smaller, and faster -- that’s the battle cry of high technology. It has also been the big driver behind semiconductor companies for many years, and recently fiber optics has been following the same trend.
In the semiconductor industry, makers of manufacturing and test equipment have had enormous stock gains in the past 10 years. Companies like Applied Materials, and KLA Tencor created billion-dollar businesses selling complex machines required for the delicate process of making a computer chip. But today, fiber optics is where the highest growth is. Optical networking is moving so quickly that companies cannot make components fast enough. And just like for semiconductors, testing equipment is needed in order to make sure that the whole fiber system is running smoothly.
Agilent Technologies (NYSE:A) is one company that is making test equipment for fiber companies. It is a spin-off of Hewlett-Packard, and leads the market in selling many kinds of optical-related testing products. Their stock, however, has not been a market leader due to problems with medical and chemical divisions, but their technology is working well.
Newport Corporation (NASDAQ:NEWP) is an equipment maker that is using factory automation to produce fiber-optics components. They have hundreds of tools that help companies produce new fiber, such as specialized workbenches that control vibrations in the lines during manufacturing. Newport has increasing earnings, and as its manufacturing space increases, so will its earnings.
Digital Lightwave (NASDAQIGL) has overcome some problems to return to profitability. It has a ten-pound touch-screen computer that technicians use to pinpoint problems on fiber-optic lines. Dynatech (NASDAQYNA) is a maker of computers and software that network operators install in their central offices to remotely detect problems on cable networks. This saves the expense of an on-site investigation by a technician.
As the business of making fiber optics continues to become more complex, these are some of the stocks that could do well. And a basket approach -- investing a small amount in several of the competitors -- could be a low-risk way for high returns.

@mrUpper
