Sunburst steigert Halbjahres-Umsatz von DM 5,7 Mio. in 1999 auf DM 64,3
Mio. in 2000
"Wiesn".

Merchandising werde zunehmend professioneller umgesetzt. Damit werde

Dear shareholders, business partners and readers,
After the great reception which the July 2000 newsletter enjoyed, we
are now happy to present the latest news from SUNBURST
MERCHANDISING AG
News Overview:
Sunburst first-half sales at DM 64.3 million after 5.7 million
in the previous year
Deutsche Bundesbank classifies Sunburst Merchandising AG as
eligible for refinancing with central banks (able to issue
bonds)
"Moorhühner" for everybody: Germany`s first fluffy moorhen toy
flying high!
Second series for the successful Big Brother concept
Sunburst: Even more potential in black-and-yellow thanks to the
successful start into the soccer season for Borussia Dortmund
Sunburst as official licensing partner of the Munich Oktoberfest
Sunlimited: Million-DM-order from Wilkinson Sword for promotion
activity
Commerzbank AG and Bankhaus Lampe recommend Sunburst: Buy
Sunburst increases sales for the first half of the year from DM 5.7
million in 1999 to 64.3 million in 2000
In August, Sunburst Merchandising AG was able to report an eleven-fold
increase in its sales revenues for the first half of 2000 from DM 5.7
million the previous year up to DM 64.3 million for this first six
months of 2000. This is more than half of the projected revenues for
the year
as a whole ? even though the fourth quarter, traditionally the quarter
with the highest sales, is still to come. And profits are looking good,
too:
the EBIT result rose to DM 4.1 million after DM 0.8 million in the
entire previous year.
This means that projected sales of DM 120 million will be easily
achieved, and this although the sales from the European Soccer
Championship (EURO 2000) are not entirely included in this half years´
figure yet and the traditionally strong Christmas season is
approaching.
à la carte: Sales boost thanks to the Moorhuhn; The cult chicken hits
the shelves in mid September
The toy and gift article merchandising company à la carte ? 100%
subsidiary of Sunburst Merchandising AG since July of this year ? is
hatching out the first ever and exclusive brood of stuffed
"Moorhühner", games and other attractive products in various sizes.
Modelled on the computer game "Moorhuhn", the second version, of which
more than eight million downloads since mid August have been reported,
this fluffy toy has its digital counterpart`s facial expression and the
goggle-eyes that veritably beg you to "shoot it" right between them.
In addition to its stuffed toys, highly-profitable à la carte also
markets collectibles, board games, masks, mouse pads, key-rings, coffee
cups and alarm and wall clocks based on Germany`s most famous piece of
poultry, and is with this licence the only licensee of
"Moorhuhn"-licensing agency RTV AG. CEO Martin M. Bieri also adds that:
"preparations for our extremely busy Christmas season are running at
full speed."
Nastrojve Potsdam: The second Big Brother series on RTL II
Thanks to the success of the first series and the excellent
cooperation, Nastrovje Potsdam is once again licensee for the second
Big Brother
series.
As well as the Big Brother articles, the lifestyle fashion brands VIVE
MARIA and NP are doing very well on the markets of Europe. The new
Nastrovje Potsdam mail order catalogue, which has been developed now
for the first time by mail order-specialist and Sunburst subsidiary
EMP, has had a very successful start.
Sunburst: Potential in black-and-yellow; Successful start of the
Bundesliga season for Borussia Dortmund and to the cooperation with
Sunburst
The EURO 2000, which was a big success for Sunburst, was only the first
step into the soccer merchandising market. The next phase was the
closing of an agreement with the Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund.
The agreement is based on a concept which Sunburst has "imported" from
the US: cross licensing. Here, the Warner Bros. Looney Tunes comic
characters, such as Tweety and Bugs Bunny, are turned into Dortmund
fans and adorned with the club logo. This helps Sunburst
generate additional potential for the national league soccer club
Borrussia Dortmund on top of the traditional club merchandising.
And the surprisingly good sporting start to the season that Borussia
Dortmund was able to achieve has provided the fitting launching pad for
the realisation of the new concept by Sunburst Merchandising AG.
The agreement with both Warner Bros. and Borussia Dortmund, sealing
collaborations for several years, includes around 90 % of all available
product categories. Thus, next to the classical gift article and
accessories fields, the categories "Home & Living" and "Food" are also
contained in the agreements, a fact that demonstrates the vision of the
concept and the committed support that both licensors are giving
Sunburst.
Sunburst secures for the first time exclusive marketing rights for the
Munich Oktoberfest
Since September 16 enormous crowds of people from all over the world
have been storming the Munich Oktoberfest. In the coming two weeks the
expected 7 million visitors will spend more than DM 450 million at the
"Wiesn". Sunburst has a wide range of 38 quality souvenirs on sale
at the Oktoberfest: from the 500 ml beer krug with the official
Oktoberfest logo, through to the fan-shirt and the new mascot "Wies`n
Wastl".
And for the first time in the history of the Fest, all of the most
popular products are being provided by just one company. Similarly to
the Love Parade, Sunburst Merchandising AG is planning to increase
turnover considerably from year to year. And in this first year,
Sunburst is
expecting to generate sales that are above those of the Love Parade
(around DM 1.3 million in 2000).

Sunlimited: Million-DM-order from Wilkinson Sword for promotion
activity Sunlimited advanced marketing GmbH, a newly-founded company
solely for the purpose of doing business in the promotional article and
premium-segments, recently received an initial order of Wilkinson Sword
GmbH for over DM 1 Mio. Within this order Sunlimited develops and
produces articles for a promotion campaign of Wilkinson Sword.
Sunlimited defines itself as partner for the industry and develops
complete marketing- and product concepts for high-profile marketing
campaigns. Another example for the close connection between
merchandising- and promotional products is Sunlimited´s
supplier-involvement in Reemtsma´s sponsorship for the West McLaren
Mercedes team.
Commerzbank and the Bankhaus Lampe agree: shares of Sunburst
Merchandising AG are a "Buy" in the growth market of merchandising
Analysts report that Sunburst was able to make the most of the market
situation after its stock-exchange listing and utilise the funds raised
by it for strategic acquisitions and organic growth.
They go on to say that Sunburst has thus further extended its market
leadership as a full-liner on the still fragmented German Merchandising
market.
Experts see its special competitive advantage in the broad sales
presence: from on-site through to wholesale and retail and on to
mail-order, cinema shops and Internet. The expertise that Sunburst has
acquired in merchandising enables it to acquire more and more
successful
characters for its merchandising objectives. Thus, for licensors such
as ISPR, Lucas Film Productions and EM.TV, Sunburst has thus further
consolidated its position as No. 1 partner.
And they go on to say that merchandising plays a much more major role
in the USA and Europe as a whole than in Germany, but due to the
stagnation in many consumer-goods fields, merchandising is now also
beginning to become more important on this market. Merchandising is
being managed more professionally now and this will lead to a
furthering of the concentration process. The analysts expect that
Sunburst will continue to profit from this development and also further
extend its lead over the competition.
The market analysts see the stock of Sunburst Merchandising AG as a Buy
at its current low level. Commerzbank considers 58 euros to be a fair
price for the share.
