CEO - First Quarter Review and Summary
EARLY IMPRESSIONS/COMMENTS
The initiation since joining the Travelshop group in July of 2000, has been challenging to say the least given the disappointing results of 99/2000, although every new venture encounters obstacles during the establishment stages and Travelshop, can be included by this summation. As we have observed, many of the new and developing businesses that have entered the e-commerce/dot.com arena have met with significant development costs and have suave subsequently been forced to re-forecast their levels of sales and profitability.
E-Commerce though, does and will continue to provide Travelshop with worthwhile opportunities as it also continues to play an increasingly larger role in the travel industry generally.
The significance of the year end results have impacted heavily on our group and have forced the management team to simultaneously action a variety of programs that would normally be phased in or more progressively applied.
COST MINIMISATION
In order to address our cost and expenditure lines, we have assessed expectations across all operational areas and have reduced previously forecast expenditure significantly.
Our staffing requirements have been re evaluated and reduced from 120 personnel at June to 83 currently.
Ongoing web and technology costs will however, continue to be assessed as more of a `fixed` component of overall expenditure. This new and expanding market segment will remain a funding challenge for the foreseeable future.
MARKET DEVELOPMENTS
As part of the business review program mentioned earlier, the management team has moved swiftly to contact and re-engage our trading relationships with our industry associates. I am pleased to be able to report overwhelming market support for the new management team, particularly in areas relating to our underlying ethical and professional standards of market practice. Our business to business alliances are developing well and will be the subject and focus of next month`s report.
I can however, suggest that a wider group of commercial enterprises have both initiated contact with Travelshop and responded favourably to our submissions and proposals for mutually beneficial programs.
The establishment of offices in both Melbourne and Sydney (as well as Perth), over the recent three months has seen a measurable increase in contact and communication with many sections of commerce, all keen
to explore a connection with Travelshop.
SALES PERFORMANCE
The first ten weeks of trading demonstrate an improved trend over the same period for 1999, with gross sales revenues up by 34% across the board. Broken down, this equates to retail +8% and call centre/internet sales +92% compared to last year.
We are still reconciling the profit line and anticipate some `hangover` effects of the high cost regime apparent in 99/00.
MANAGEMENT
During the first quarter, we have been fortunate to recruit some highly skilled and experienced management personnel to the group.
We have appointed Ms Julie Smith to the position of Marketing and Strategic Planning Manager - responsible for all major marketing/alliance development and strategic evaluation for the company. Julie has developed and implemented major marketing campaigns in the tourism industry and has recently worked on the development of e-commerce strategies in leading service organisations.
As well, on the 11th September, we appointed Mr John Tabone to lead and manage our vital call centre operation into the future. John has over 25 years experience in the airline industry, controlling major
reservations and telecommunication centres around Australia. He has had extensive exposure and experience in call centre management and is particularly cognisant of technical developments in this stream of business.
MARKET PLACE
The Retail sector of the travel industry has traditionally worked with very low margins and these will remain under constant pressure at all levels of the `distribution` chain.
Travelshop`s previous history has been to try and capture an increasing share of this market but this strategy is currently under review. There is sound argument for an involvement in the `wholesale`
or product fulfilment end of the supply chain for customers. Travelshop management is currently assessing the opportunities in this area.
It is to be expected that Travelshop will maintain focus on technology development, business to business (B2B) alliances and expansion within the contemporary segments of the market place.
We will however, look to become more significantly involved in the `product supply` segment of travel. This segment offers unique benefits in that it `sources` and constructs exclusive products and packages for consumer offer.

@McEisen

@Z...Erwin, sehe ich auch so.

was up by 34 per cent to 28
September 2000.
The result is an improvement on its end of year result,

This has resulted in management
introducing several programs simultaneously that might normally have been
phased in.

Travelshop`s chief executive, Glenn Robertson,
says that electronic commerce remains a large part of the on-line
and retail travel group`s strategy.

attraktiv.
