RESEARCH ALERT - Chase H&Q starts Vertex at buy

NEW YORK, Sept 28 (Reuters) - Chase H&Q said on Thursday that it has started Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NasdaqNM:VRTX - news) as a buy.

-- Vertex shares rose $1-7/16 to $88-11/16 or 1.67 percent.

-- Chase H&Q analyst David Molowa said Vertex`s technology platform ``positions the company to be one of the leaders in the post-genomic area of drug discovery.``

-- ``With valuations in the biotechnology industry -- Vertex included -- at historical highs, standard valuation methods are obsolete, in our opinion,`` Molowa wrote in a research report. ``Nevertheless, we believe Vertex`s drug discovery capabilities and rich pipeline should provide continued momentum for the stock over the next 12 months.``

-- Vertex discovered Agenerase, has seven drug candidates in advanced clinical testing and has formed a number of high profile partnerships. Agenerase is a protease inhibitor marketed by Glaxo Wellcome PLC (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: GLXO.L) to treat HIV.

-- Vertex signed a broad drug discovery collaboration with Novartis AG to develop small molecular drugs, which could be worth up to $800 million to Vertex in pre-commercial payments.
