Kinowelt and Propaganda team on Titan movie
Kinowelt USA - the LA-based US production arm of German media giant Kinowelt Medien - has acquired the spec script Titan by Phiroze Vasunia and Michelle Taghioff. The feature film will be produced with Propaganda Films whose director of production Brian Oliver introduced the project to Kinowelt along with Kinowelt director of development Matt Milich.

Kinowelt USA buys Let It Ride pitch for Hurd
Kinowelt USA, the US production arm of German film giant Kinowelt, and producer Gale Anne Hurd (Anmerkung: Produzentin von Armageddon, Alien 1+2, Terminator 1+2 u.v.a.)have acquired the rights to the pitch Let It Ride by Melanie Mayron and Cynthia Mort for a sum in the mid-six figures.

The film will be produced by Hurd’s Valhalla Motion Pictures, which has a first look, multi-year development, production and distribution arrangement with Kinowelt USA. The deal was announced by Kinowelt USA co-chairs Chris Sievernich and Rainer Kolmel.

The script, purchased for a low six figure against high six figure sum, is an adaptation of the myth of Perseus and his quest to battle both Medusa and the Kraken monster to save Princess Andromeda and his father’s kingdom.

Kinowelt USA und eine weitere US Produktionsfirma arbeiten derzeit an der Umsetzung des Thrillers Joshua Son of None. Es geht um die Ermordung des Präsidenten 1963. Bei der Obduktion wurde genetisches Material der Leiche entfernt und ist seitdem verschwunden. In einem Genlabor wird das Material für Experimente verwendet, was zu einer Kettenreaktion führt.

Uebrigens: Blair Witch hat wie erwartet etwas an Glanz verloren. 13,1Mio.Us$ (3300 Screens) am Startwochenende. Allerdings ist nicht so ein Desaster, den die Produktionskosten liegen auch für diesen Teil im Ultra Low Budget Bereich.

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - German producer Kinowelt USA has beaten out other suitors for Mark Perez`s latest screenplay ``Cap`n Ricky ... also Featuring Karl.`` The company will finance the pic, budgeted in the $20 million range.

The story follows the adventures of Ricardo Brubaker, a.k.a. Cap`n Ricky, who pilots a jungle boat ride at a Florida amusement park.

Perez`s comedy ``The Country Bears`` is currently in pre-production at Disney with a February 2001 start date. His first spec script, ``The Party Professional,`` was bought earlier this year by Universal.

Perez, who has an on-lot writing deal at Disney, has closed a blind script deal with the company`s Touchstone TV unit via David Hoberman`s television pact with the studio.

Russo brothers `Welcome` Love to heist comedy

LOS ANGELES (The Hollywood Reporter) --- Courtney Love has been added to the cast of the comedy feature "Welcome to Collinwood" for Ohio-based filmmaking brothers Anthony and Joe Russo and producers Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney.


The project is scheduled to begin shooting in late March in Cleveland, with Soderbergh and Clooney producing through their Warner Bros.-based production company Section Eight. Kinowelt USA, the U.S. production arm of Munich-based Kinowelt Medien AG, will finance the project, which has an estimated budget of $10 million.


Written by the Russos, "Welcome" is described as being in the vein of "The Full Monty." The story follows a group of working-class Cleveland men who attempt to rob a pawn shop. Love will play a woman who helps the men orchestrate the heist. Isaiah Washington ("Romeo Must Die"), Luis Guzman ("Traffic") and Jennifer Esposito ("Wes Craven Presents Dracula 2000") also star in the feature.


Kinowelt`s Chris Sievernich and Rainer Kolmel will executive produce. Propaganda Films, whose management division represents Soderbergh, is expected to be involved in a producing capacity as well.


Love, repped by United Talent Agency and Untitled Entertainment, next stars in the Shooting Gallery feature "Julie Johnson." Her other film credits include starring roles in "The People vs. Larry Flynt" and "Man on the Moon." Love remains attached to star in "Hello Suckers," a biopic about Hollywood screen legend Mary Louise Cecelia "Texas" Guinan for director Scott Elliott.

Latest Hollywood script deals
HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Scribe James Flamberg, who shared the screenplay award at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival (news - web sites) for USA Films` ``Nurse Betty,`` has sold ``Identity`` to Kinowelt USA.

The company, the U.S. arm of the largest independent film distributor in Germany, beat several suitors for the script in a deal potentially worth high six figures if the film is produced. The project, out to directors, is slated for a mid-October start date.

The story follows a well-known psychologist who suddenly finds herself locked in a deadly struggle of wills when her family, career and life are torn apart by a former patient. When friends and family abandon her, she takes it upon herself to clear her name and reclaim her life.

Wain tapped to steer `Cap`n Ricky`
Ganis to produce project with Kinowelt coin

David Wain ("Wet Hot American Summer") will direct "Cap`n Ricky … Also Featuring Karl," from a script by Mark Perez.
Kinowelt is financing the pic. Sid Ganis, via his Out of the Blue Entertainment shingle, will produce, along with Matt Rhodes of Persistent Pictures and Todd Lieberman of Hyde Park Prods. Kinowelt`s Chris Sievernich and Matt Milich will exec produce.

Wain recently directed, produced and wrote, with Michael Showalter, "Wet Hot American Summer," which premiered at this year`s Sundance. Pic, acquired by USA Films, stars Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Molly Shannon, Paul Rudd and Showalter.

Wain`s short film "Aisle Six" was featured at the Sundance and Edinburgh film festivals, winning first-place awards at fests in Aspen and Australia.

As a member of comedy group the State, he co-created a series for MTV, a special for CBS, a book for Hyperion Press and an album for Warner Bros. In addition to directing more than 80 short films for the State, Wain has been a cast member, supervising producer, writer and editor.

Ganis currently is producing Columbia`s "Mr. Deeds," loosely based on the Frank Capra pic "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town." The updated version stars Adam Sandler, Winona Ryder, John Turturro and Peter Gallagher.

Repped by CAA and Principato-Young, Wain also has written and/or directed for television shows including "Mad TV" (Fox), "You Wrote It, You Watch It" (MTV), "Random Play" (VH-1), "Sheep in the Big City" (Cartoon Network) and "The Daily Show" and "Strangers With Candy" (Comedy Central).

Molly Parker, Leelee Sobieski, Noah Taylor, Ulrich Tomsen and Paul Hipp will star opposite John Cusack in "Hoffman," the directorial debut of scribe Menno Meyjes ("The Color Purple").
Kinowelt Medien subsid Bioskop Film is now on board to co-produce the pic with Alliance Atlantis.

Penned by Meyjes and set in 1920s Munich, film follows local gallery owner Hoffman (Cusack), who is befriended by the young Hitler (Taylor) as he returns from WWI. Producers expect to shoot the $11.5 million pic in Europe this fall.

Producing are Alliance Atlantis prexy Seaton McLean and Andras Hamori`s H20 Motion Pictures. Also on board are Natural Nylon, Jap Films and Movie Masters. Bioskop`s Dietmar Guntsche and Eberhard Junkesdorf will exec produce the project.

Parker, who stars in "Center of the World" and who also starred in "Sunshine" for Alliance Atlantis, is repped by the William Morris Agency. Sobieski is repped by CAA and Current Entertainment, Taylor by the Gersh Agency and Thomsen and Hipp by Paradigm, with Hipp also repped by Christopher Wright Management.

Further English-language projects in the works at Bioskop include "Shooting Carlo," a teen comedy set on Europe`s infamous clubbing island of Ibiza and to be directed by Tom Davis.

Strike`s off: new US actors contract agreed

A new three-year theatrical motion picture and TV production agreement has been tentatively agreed by US actors unions Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the American Federation Of Television And Radio Artists (AFTRA) on behalf of actors and the Alliance Of Motion Picture And Television Producers (AMPTP).

The agreement, announced last night at 9.30pm LA time, is subject to the approval of the joint SAG/AFTRA Board of Directors and the memberships of both unions, voting in a secret ballot mail referendum. It instantly destroys the idea of an actors strike - an eventuality which has been dreaded and planned for in the industry for over a year.

Hollywood is now in a strange lull. Studios had so dramatically accelerated film production to beat strike deadlines that, despite this agreement, film production could stay in quiet for some months.

The joint SAG/AFTRA board meeting will take place “as quickly as possible” according to a joint statement issued last night by SAG, AFTRA and the AMPTP. If the Boards approve the contracts, a mail referendum would then be sent to the 135,000 members of SAG and AFTRA nationwide.

According to the statement, SAG and AFTRA members may continue to audition and work on film and television projects at this time. Work done during this period would be paid retroactively according to the terms of the tentative agreement.

Full details of the tentative agreement are not being released at this time, but highlights of the new agreement were revealed and they are:

- Industry standard minimum increases.
- Significant increase in basic cable residuals.
- Additional contributions to the SAG Health Plan.
- Substantial increase in salaries for guest stars and stunt coordinators.
- New provisions for the Internet similar to the Writers Guild of America.

The two sides resumed talks in Los Angeles on Tuesday afternoon after negotiators took the morning off to rest from a 17-hour negotiating session which finished on Monday at 2.30am.
