Alexion Pharmaceuticals Reports Fourth Quarter and Year End Results
      THURSDAY, OCTOBER 05, 2000 6:30 AM

      - PRNewswire

NEW HAVEN, Conn., Oct 5, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Alexion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq:ALXN) today announced the Company`s financial results for its fourth quarter and fiscal year ended July 31, 2000.

In its fourth quarter, Alexion received contract research and grant revenues amounting to $3.99 million compared to $5.96 million in revenues received in the same period ended July 31, 1999. The Company`s research and development expenses for the three month period decreased to $8.77 million from $9.58 million for the same period last year, and net loss for the fourth quarter was $5.09 million or $0.34 per share compared to a net loss of $4.15 million or $0.37 per share reported in the fourth quarter of last year.

For the 12 months ended July 31, 2000, revenues were $21.44 million compared to $18.75 million for the same period last year. The increase in revenues was due primarily to increased research and development support payments received from Procter & Gamble Pharmaceuticals (P&GP) in connection with the companies` collaboration on the development of the C5 complement inhibitor, 5G1.1-SC in acute cardiovascular diseases. The Company`s research and development expenses for fiscal year 2000 were $40.19 million compared to $23.71 million for the 12 months ended July 31, 1999 reflecting increased research and development expenses attributable principally to the Phase II clinical trials and Phase I pilot clinical studies, and manufacturing of the Company`s lead C5 Complement Inhibitors, 5G1.1-SC and 5G1.1 currently in human clinical trials for eight clinical indications.

The Company`s net loss for the fiscal year ended July 31, 2000 increased to $20.23 million or $1.45 per share, from a net loss of $6.4 million or $0.57 per share for the prior year. Cash and cash equivalents increased during the previous 12 month period to $174.5 million compared to $28.33 million as of July 31, 1999.

"Our recently concluded fiscal year, was a very eventful one as we made important strides in advancing the clinical development of our lead antibody product candidates. Of particular note is the completion of enrollment in our large Phase II clinical studies in cardiopulmonary bypass patients and in rheumatoid arthritis patients," said David Keiser, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Alexion. "In addition, through the recently announced acquisition of Prolifaron, we have significantly enhanced the Company`s research capabilities, enabling us to further expand our portfolio of antibody products through our new wholly owned subsidiary, Alexion Antibody Technologies."

Alexion is engaged in the discovery and development of therapeutic products aimed at treating patients with a wide array of severe disease states. Alexion`s two lead product candidates are currently in eight clinical development programs. 5G1.1-SC, in collaboration with Procter & Gamble, is in a Phase IIb cardiopulmonary bypass efficacy trial and in two Phase II myocardial infarction efficacy trials. 5G1.1 is currently in a Phase II efficacy trial for the chronic treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, a Phase II efficacy trial for the treatment of membranous nephritis and in Phase Ib pilot studies for treatment of psoriasis, dermatomyositis, and pemphigoid. Alexion Receives Orphan Drug Status for C5 Inhibitor Antibody 5G1.1 In Dermatomyositis Patients
      FRIDAY, OCTOBER 06, 2000 6:30 AM
      - PRNewswire

NEW HAVEN, Conn., Oct 6, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Alexion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq:ALXN) today announced that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted Orphan Drug status to Alexion`s humanized monoclonal antibody C5 Complement Inhibitor 5G1.1 for the treatment of patients with dermatomyositis, a severe inflammatory muscle disorder. Alexion is currently enrolling patients in a Phase Ib pilot clinical trial that is designed to gather clinical data regarding the safety profile and biological and clinical effects of 5G1.1 in this patient population. The Orphan Drug designation provides Alexion with market exclusivity for seven years from the drug`s approval date.

"Dermatomyositis is a rare and severe inflammatory disorder, the rash and debilitating weakness of which we believe may be alleviated by 5G1.1," said Leonard Bell, M.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of Alexion. "We are enthused to work in collaboration with the FDA to as rapidly as possible attempt to provide an innovative therapy for this small, but underserved patient population. We are continuing to aggressively pursue 5G1.1 in this and other potential orphan indications with the objective of providing relief to multiple underserved and previously unrecognized patient groups."

Dermatomyositis is a chronic, autoimmune disorder in which the patient`s immune system attacks muscles and skin, which may cause extensive rash and progressive and severe muscle weakness, pain, and fatigue. According to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, approximately 2,000 - 3,000 new cases of dermatomyositis are diagnosed each year in the U.S., with an estimated prevalence of approximately 5,000 - 20,000 patients.

"Previously published investigations have shown that clinical improvement in dermatomyositis patients is associated with reduced levels of complement activation in the affected muscle," said Dr. Christopher Mojcik, Alexion`s Vice President of Clinical Development. "We are encouraged to aggressively push forward with the investigation of our C5 Inhibitor 5G1.1 in this patient population for which effective treatment options are limited."

Alexion is engaged in the discovery and development of therapeutic products aimed at treating patients with a wide array of severe disease states, including cardiovascular and autoimmune disorders, inflammation and cancer. Additionally, through the creation of its wholly owned subsidiary, Alexion Antibody Technologies, Inc., Alexion is engaged in discovering and developing a portfolio of additional antibody therapeutics targeting severe unmet medical needs.

Alexion Pharmaceuticals Forms Post-Genomics Discovery Company, Arradial, Inc. To Commercialize Alexion`s Novel Ultra High Throughput Microarray Assay Technology
NEW HAVEN, Conn., Oct. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Alexion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: ALXN - news) today announced it is contributing its technology to the formation of a new company, Arradial, Inc., which is aimed at commercializing Alexion`s novel, desktop silicon-based microarray assay technology. The technology is expected to have applications in genomics and drug discovery and is capable of performing over 100,000 nanoliter volume microassays per day with a miniaturized, software-driven robotic system.

``We are pleased to have established Arradial as a means to commercialize this exciting new post-genomic instrumentation technology which may establish a new standard with particular utility in important new emerging discovery areas including genomics, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), and proteomics,`` stated Stephen P. Squinto, Ph.D., Alexion`s Executive Vice President and Head of Research. ``As Arradial further develops commercial instrumentation, we expect to integrate this important technology into our San Diego-based Alexion Antibody Technologies subsidiary to expedite our ability to screen large combinatorial antibody libraries and identify novel recombinant human antibodies.``

Arradial, located in Boston, MA, expects to close its seed round of venture capital financing in the fourth quarter of 2000. Alexion will become a minority equity shareholder in the Company and will have the right to a seat on the Board of Directors. Mr. P. Thomas Vogel, previous President of Fisher Scientific Company and former President and Chief Operating Officer of Instrumentation Laboratories, Inc., is a co-founder and the President, Chief Executive Officer, and a Director of the Company. Alexion will grant the company an exclusive world-wide license to its microarray assay technology for all applications in return for a licensing fee. Alexion will retain all rights to the informatics and instrumentation technologies for the discovery and development of therapeutic antibodies. The technology was co-invented by and co-developed with Dr. Allyn Hubbard, and Mr. Samesh Kale in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of Boston University. Boston University will also become a minority equity shareholder in the company.

Tom Vogel, CEO and co-founder of Arradial, provided the premier presentation of the company`s novel microarray platform today at the National Conference of Biotechnology Ventures in San Francisco co-sponsored by Ernst and Young and Oxford Bioscience Ventures. In the session highlighting ``Post Genomic Instrumentation,`` the company disclosed that it has successfully demonstrated that ultra high throughput antibody screening assays could be reproducibly performed with precision in nanoliter (billionth of a liter) volumes using silicon microwells. In addition to Arradial`s screening device, the company also discussed its development of a novel re-arrayer device which universally couples macro devices (microliter volumes) to microdevices (nanoliter volumes).

``Arradial is excited to be developing this desktop laboratory personal screening system -- the `LabPS` -- to meet the growing needs of the drug discovery industry in the post genomic era,`` stated P. Thomas Vogel, CEO of Arradial, Inc. ``Arradial expects to capitalize on the fundamental discoveries and development of this device that came about through the collaboration between Alexion and Boston University.``

``By forming a focused organization such as Arradial, we believe that our informatics and instrumentation platform will be more quickly developed for commercialization,`` said Leonard Bell, M.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of Alexon. ``We are pleased that we have been able to attract superb management and such high levels of interest from the venture capital community. With the establishment of our wholly owned Alexion Antibody Technologies subsidiary only last month, we are now looking to exploit Arradial`s integrated desktop informatics and automation platform to markedly expand our internal antibody discovery programs.``

Alexion is engaged in the discovery and development of therapeutic products aimed at treating patients with a wide array of severe disease states, including cardiovascular and autoimmune disorders, inflammation and cancer. Additionally, through the creation of its wholly owned subsidiary, Alexion Antibody Technologies, Inc., Alexion is engaged in discovering and developing a portfolio of additional antibody therapeutics targeting severe unmet medical needs. This press release and further information about Alexion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. can be found on the World Wide Web at: http://www.AlexionPharm.com.

Arradial is an informatics and instrumentation company that applies diverse technologies in a novel format to meet the demanding needs of the pharmaceutical industry from gene-mapping to drug discovery.

      About Arradial`s LabPS System

The prototype microarray assay system uniquely combines and integrates silicon chip technology with reaction site indexing to carry out ultra high throughput drug screening and discovery. Arradial`s microarray assay system was designed to utilize a single, fully integrated device that couples fluidics and optics to achieve bioassay capabilities using fluorescence detection. The ability to screen 20,000 nanoliter volume microwells on a silicon diskette establishes a new standard for high throughput screening. The device utilizes simple robotics encompassing a linear arm moving with submicron precision over a rotating diskette. The simplified robotics allow for a compact engineering design on the desktop providing simplified operations, portability, and accuracy aimed at serving a variety of screening applications. The novel microarray assay technology is expected to have applications in a variety of high throughput screening systems, which target combinatorial antibody libraries, organic compound libraries, gene sequencing, gene expression, and pharmacogenomics.

`ne Menge News gibts auch bei
      www.bigcharts.com
