Nastech zählt weltweit zu den kleinen, aber wachstumsstarken Segment der nasalen Medikamente. Experten schätzen in den nächsten Jahren das Wachstum des weltweiten Branchenumsatzes auf mind. 35 % p.a.
Enttäuschende Absatzzahlen schickten den Kurs auf Talfahrt. Seit ihrem ATH im Jahr 1996 büsste Nastech fast 90 % ihres Wertes ein. Ein nicht unwesentlicher Grund dieses Einbruches liegt in der hohen Abhängigkeit vom Erfolg weniger Produkte.
Um in diesem Segment zukünftig überproportional zu wachsen, soll nach dem Auslaufen eines alten Patentes neben einem aus Morphinen gewonnenen schmerzstillenden Spray noch ein Potenzspray auf den Markt kommen.

In seiner 15-jährigen Geschichte brachte das New Yorker Unternehmen erst zwei Präparate in den Handel, nämlich Stadol, ein schmerzstillendes Mittel, und Nascobal, ein Medikament gegen Vitamin B-12 Mangel. Letzters wird von der deutschen Schwarz Pharma vertrieben, die bis Ende 1998 für die Vertriebsrechte Linzenzzahlungen in einer jährlichen Mindesthöhe von 2 Mio US$ leistete. Der Wegfall dieser Zahlungen und der Absatzeinbruch bei Nascobal waren in den ersten neun Monaten des abgelaufenen Geschäftsjahres für einen Umsatzeinbruch von 46 % auf 4,4 Mio US$ verantwortlich. Im August 2002 hören auch die Zahlungen durch Bristol-Myers-Squibb, dem Vertreiber von Stadol, auf. Bis dahin sollte bereits ein auf Scopolamin-Basis hergestellter Spry gegen Reisekrankheit für satte Gewinne sorgen.
Selbst wenn der Bargeldabfluss sich konstant auf dem hohen Niveau der ersten neun Monate des abgelaufenen Geschäftsjahres einpendelt, reichen die Liquiditätsreserven noch bis Feber 2002. Das Unternehmen ist schuldenfrei.
Nastech ist Technologieführer in der nasalen Anwendungsmedizin. In der Forschungspipeline befinden sich neben einem nebenwirkungsfreien Medikament zur Potenzsteigerung, einem Spray gegen Migräne, einen Morphinspray zur Schmerztherapie auch Sprays gegen Krebs und Hepatitis.
Kein einziges Produkt in Entwicklung verfügt über ein weltweites Umsatzpotenzial von unter 400 Mio. USD.

Dennoch sollte sich der geneigte Anleger des Risikos eines Invests in Nastech bewusst sein. Dzt. verdient die Fa. gerade mal mit zwei Medikamenten Geld, dessen Versiegen bereits absehbar ist, bzw. schon passiert ist. Aktuell schreibt die Fa. Verluste.

Nastech Reports Results of Phase I Intranasal Apomorphine Study For Treatment of Female Sexual Dysfunction
Study Marks First Step to Expand Applications of Company`s Formulation Science Technology
Hauppauge, N.Y., Oct. 4/PRNewswire/ -- Nastech Pharmaceutical Company Inc. announced today results from a Phase I clinical trial evaluating intranasal apomorphine hydrochloride for the treatment of sexual dysfunction in women.
The Phase I study was designed to determin the pharmacokinetics, safety and tolerance of intranasal apomorphine hydochloride in healthy female subjects. The study involved 48 nasal administrations of apomorphine at dosages from 0,1 mg to 0,75 mg per dose followed by blood sampling from five to 180 minutes. Apomorphine plasma concentrations were determined by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Clinical safety measurements included clinical nasal examination, blood pressure, heart rate, respiration rate and side effects.

Results of the study indicate the rapid appearance (within 5 minutes) of apomorphine in the blood with maximum levels between 22 and 28 minutes. The maximum plasma concentration (Cmax) and AUC (Area Under the Curve, the "total" quantity of apomorphine in the plasma) were dose dependent and there was relatively low subject-to-subject variability in Cmax and AUC.
There were no significant changes in blood pressure, heart rate, or respiration rate nor were ther nasal mucosa changers. There were no serious sid effects in the study, including no observations of dizziness, sweating, vomiting, hypotension or syncope. Other companies habe seen thes side effects for apomorphine products under development ba non-nasal routes. The product is now planned for use in an "at home" clinical efficacy study by female patient who suffer from sexual dysfunction.
"According to a report by SG Cowen, female sexual dysfunction represents a signifincant unmet medical need that could rival the projected market for erectile dysfunction," said Charan Behl, Ph. D. and Executive Vice President of Research and Development at Nastech. "The results of this study allow us to move forward with Phase II `at home` clinical efficacy studies in women. In addition, we will soon initiate similar efficacy studies in male patients suffering from erectile dysfunction. This means Nastech will habe the ability to potentially participate in both market."
In February, Nastech announce favorable male efficacy data for apomorphine when compard to Pfizer`s Viagra in a pilot Phase II study (see February 23, 2000 relese).
