guten abend,

PS: 11:58 BST VerticalNet chairman predicts profitability soon
VerticalNet Chairman Mark Walsh (us:VERT) says his business-to-business marketplace will soon reach profitablity. He also predicted the Pennsylvania company will reach a market capitalization of $40 billion to $50 billion in the next two to three years. "We expect to be profitable.... and do hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue," said Walsh, speaking to a group of technology executives Thursday in Prague. When asked when the company would become profitable, Walsh said he was comfortable with analysts` expectations for a net profit in mid-2001. VerticalNet`s market cap has fallen to about $2.5 billion on Nasdaq from a peak of about $11 billion. Walsh says the market "got it wrong" on many Internet valuations earlier this year. Still, he said VerticalNet, which has bought about 20 companies in the past 18 months, will help industrial manufacturers to market and sell their goods online and offline. "There will be an E (earnings) in our P-E, and when that happens, it should be gargantuan

VerticalNet Markets Launches VerticalNet BizWorks; New ASP Business to Deliver Horizontal Services
HORSHAM, Pa., Oct. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- VerticalNet Markets, a strategic business unit of VerticalNet, Inc. (Nasdaq: VERT), the Internet`s leading business-to-business e-commerce enabler, today announced the formation of VerticalNet BizWorks to provide horizontal business services for VerticalNet customers.
"We are pleased to formalize our horizontal services strategy through the formation of VerticalNet BizWorks. This division creates synergy among several of VerticalNet`s horizontal offerings and fits into our customer focused strategy," said Joe Galli, President and CEO of VerticalNet. "By providing integrated bundles of services across all of our communities we maximize the value to our customers."
"These services will help companies take offline activities online, solidifying VerticalNet`s position as a business-to-business e-commerce enabler," said Walter Rogers, Vice President and General Manager of VerticalNet BizWorks. Packaged service suites will be available in an ASP format and be made available to VerticalNet customers on a subscription basis. Each customer will be able to select the set of services they desire and access these services through the VerticalNet interface or a digital dashboard available from their desktop. VerticalNet`s expertise in leveraging e-commerce and web-based technologies will allow companies to improve operational efficiencies, lower operating costs and drive more of their business to the Web.

"Traditional outsourcing and ASP markets are large and rapidly growing business segments," said Rogers. "Our offerings bundle various infrastructure, application, hosting and processing services designed to solve many of the day-to-day operational issues faced by our customers. Companies working with VerticalNet BizWorks can leverage the power of the Internet without having to make the significant infrastructure and staffing investment required to truly achieve scale."

hi,

VerticalNet and Sumitomo enhance Strategic Relationship
Global Industrial Conglomerate to Purchase $30 Million in VerticalNet Common Stock
HORSHAM, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 1, 2000--VerticalNet Inc. (Nasdaq:VERT - news), the Internet`s leading enabler of business-to-business e-commerce, announced today that Sumitomo Corp. (NIKKEI:SC), Tokyo, has signed a definitive agreement to purchase US$30 million in VerticalNet common stock through a private placement transaction.
Sumitomo, one of Japan`s largest integrated trading companies with more than $47 billion in assets, and VerticalNet have also agreed to cooperate on a variety of joint initiatives, including the potential creation of VerticalNet Exchange Japan, which would follow on the heels of their successful NECX Asia joint venture. Additionally, Sumitomo may potentially participate as an equity partner in VerticalNet`s international endeavors, and may license or distribute technology, products and services from VerticalNet Solutions and VerticalNet Markets.
``Sumitomo`s long-standing relationships in diversified global industries will be invaluable as we expand our international operations,`` commented Joe Galli, President and CEO of VerticalNet. ``This relationship will augment both our operations and our brand as we further extend the developing synergies of our e-commerce and Exchange operations into the global arena.``
Instrumental in the joint venture`s creation, Larry Marshall, president of NECX Exchange, and David Kostman, president or International, expressed their satisfaction with the alliance. ``We have been working with Sumitomo organization for more than two years, and have launched a highly successful operation that has already created more than $70 million in transactions,`` said Marshall. ``We look forward to expanding this relationship and will initially focus our cooperation on exchanges to pursue new business opportunities, alliances and transactions in global e-commerce markets.``
``Sumitomo has a tremendous global presence across many industrial sectors,`` said Mr. Atsushi Nishijo, Managing Director of Sumitomo. ``Given our 400 years of experience as international traders, we see this as a natural evolution for our integrated trading business. The combination of our expertise in sectors such as aerospace, automotive, plastics, metals, and finance, and VerticalNet`s leadership in creating and operating online exchanges and marketplaces with its enabling software infrastructure, is tremendous and will position the two companies in the forefront of global B2B e-commerce.``
The private placement transaction is expected to close following the receipt of regulatory approvals and the completion of customary closing conditions. Under the terms of the agreement, the common shares purchased by Sumitomo will remain unregistered for at least one year.
