How I beat Bill Gates

CHINA 2000 Technology mastermind Ricardo Chan last night
revealed how his SAR company took on US giant Microsoft
and beat it to secure a million-dollar deal.
Chan said the Beijing municipal government decided to award
his company, a fully-owned subsidiary of Culturecom, the
contract as its software system was safer and cheaper than Microsoft`s.
The price is a crucial element. Our product
manages to cater to the needs of the market,
the 40-year-old general manager said.
The company secured a contract in a joint venture with the
Chinese Academy of Sciences to provide the Beijing
government with 2,000-plus sets of Red Flag Office 2000
software at 398 yuan (HK$375) apiece.
Compared to this, Chan said, Microsoft was asking for 2,650
yuan for its Office XP software. Chan said his company had
been developing software applications based on the Linux
operating system, which had been favoured by the Central
Government for security reasons. Microsoft could penetrate
into or even control its users` system. Many departments of
the Central Government may not want to see that,
Chan said, adding that Linux users had no such worries.
He believed that other municipal governments would also
choose Linux ahead of Microsoft in the near future after
the Beijing municipal government deal, preventing Microsoft
from dominating the industry.
Red Flag Chinese 2000 is a virtual clone of Microsoft`s
Windows 2000 except for the grinning Penguin mascot on the
background screen, and the Linux foundation that it is
created on. Chinese 2000 Technology is part of Culturecom`s
attempt to transform itself from comic book king to China`s
technology leader. Culturecom president Jack Chu earlier
said price was a major factor for Chinese who earned an
average of 1,000 yuan a month on the mainland.
In China the entry-level user doesn`t care if it`s Windows
or Chinese 2000, said Chu, who spent the past six years hammering out
the details of the SNIIC (Secure Numeric Internetwork
Information Centre) network that Chinese 2000 rides on.
Chu said that, unlike other companies, his had Beijing`s
trust and backing. The company is currently building a
secure network for the People`s Liberation Army and the
Ministry of Information Industry. Culturecom Holdings
surged 9.33 per cent from $0.035 to $0.41 following the
report of the Beijing municipal government deal. Although
China 2000 Technology has been operating in different areas
of the mainland, it has remained very low-profile. The
company has been operating as an Internet service provider
in Guangzhou as well as offering Chinese e-book services
and publications on Chinese culture in Beijing. Chan said
his firm was now faced with the task of hastening up its
penetration of the China market. This is not a time to
relax or to be laid-back, he said. A graduate of computer
science from the University of Western Ontario in London,
Canada, Chan has been in the IT industry for four years.
He remained optimistic that the development of information
technology on the mainland would not be a tough task.
The growth is better in China than in Hong Kong. Apart from
its huge market, there are many information technology
talents on the mainland. They have maintained a very high
standard as well, Chan said.Most of the software production
was done on the mainland, such as writing of programmes and
packaging. Following his first success, Chan said his
next step was to penetrate the mainland market for computer
games.We have the experience of working with comics.
And it is very possible that we can penetrate into the
industry where there remains huge room for development,
Chan said, adding that computer games could be sensitive in
the eyes of the Central Government.
Microsoft general manager Mark Phibbs said IT was a very
competitive industry. We`ve always said that many places we win, sometimes we lose, he said.

Chinese 2000: HK needs to lower cost for competition

(Infocast News) Culturecom Holdings Limited (0343) has recently defeated Microsoft (4338) on acquiring a RMB1 million software contract from the Beijing municipal government. Ricardo Chan, General Manager of Chinese 2000, a subsidiary of Culturecom, said that the company was granted the contract by the government because its software has a much lower price tag.

On the other hand, Chan said that Hong Kong`s technology talents are no less competitive compared with those in mainland China and the US, but Hong Kong has to lower its cost in order to have greater market share.

He estimated that mainland China will replace Hong Kong to contribute to the largest turnover of the company after the PRC launches its copyright ordinance after its entry into the WTO. He also expects Chinese 2000 to strike a breakeven this year.

Culturecom aims to steal march on Microsoft , Part I

BEIJING: Bill Gates should be weary, very weary. On a recent weekday afternoon there were at least 600 technology types - engineers, programmers, academics, government officials turned technocrats, curious investors and software gurus from US and Europe - crammed into the grand ballroom of the Kerry Center Hotel in Beijing trying out a new platform called Red Flag Chinese 2000. The product is a virtual clone of Microsoft`s Windows 2000 except for the Penguin mascot that grins on the background screen, and the Linux foundation that it is created on. Although there are a growing number of home-grown companies that are churning out software programmes and applications to compete with multinational brands for a piece of the mainland market, Chinese 2000`s weapon is three-fold: Culturecom, the Hong Kong-listed company (0343) that created Chinese 2000, partnered with the Beijing-backed Chinese Academy of Sciences, it is Chinese language- based, and it sells at a mere 600 yuan (HK$566.40) on the retail market compared to Microsoft`s hefty US$5,000 (HK$39,000) per package. Chinese 2000 is part of Culturecom`s attempt to transform itself from comic book king to China`s technology leader. It is also part of Culturecom`s dream to bring the Internet to the masses in the mainland. While Mr Gates and the geeks in Silicon Valley have the brains to do that, Culturecom`s edge is its guanxi with the Beijing government, and its affordable price tag. And price is a big catch for the average person who earns an average of 1,000 yuan a month. ``In China the entry-level user doesn`t care if it`s Windows or Chinese 2000,`` comments Culturecom president Jack Chu who spent the last six years hammering out the details of the SNIIC (Secure Numeric Internetwork Information Centre) network that Chinese 2000 rides on. And the growing number of computer and Internet users in China is a real boon for businesses. The number of Chinese Internet users, at the end of 2000, broke the 20 million mark, according to the China Internet Network Information Centre (CNNIC), a research body under the Chinese government. Two-thirds of Chinese Internet users are connected via the telephone. According to the research group IDC Asia-Pacific the number of users will grow to 5 per cent of the entire country`s population by 2004. Mr Chu is betting that Culturecom can drive the percentage to 10 to 15 per cent by 2004. And if the company`s products and network take off in China, the number of Internet users could surpass 50 per cent in 10 years, the optimistic businessman adds. Mr Chu can hear the cynics chuckling, but says that unlike other companies it has Beijing`s trust and backing. Indeed the company is currently building a secure network for the People`s Liberation Army and the Ministry of Information Industry. Quite a transformation from its days as a publishing play; the company once owned Tin Tin Daily News and its core business was churning out comic books. There is also a nationalistic undertone that seems to fuel Culturecom`s dream. Mr Chu says that the company`s mission is to bring the Internet to the masses, including the peasants. Culturecom`s management, all of them Chinese, argue that it`s about time that a Chinese company gives Mr Gates a run. ``Microsoft takes home so much profit a year,`` says Chu Bongfoo, Culturecom`s research and development guru and the grandfather of Chinese computer language who helped develop Acer`s Chinese computer language. ``What if the US and China go to war? Then there`ll be no more Microsoft,`` says the energetic Taiwan-born 68-year-old. ``Also if you use Windows all of the information is accessible in America. This isn`t to say we want to wipe them out, but only that we want to offer an alternative.`` Chu Bongfoo and his research team has developed a network platform called SNIIC that is looking to compete against US tech giants such as Microsoft and Linux, which remains a free showcase for software. In the future the company promises more applications and gadgets such as an eBook that will target the over 870,000 schools across the country. In fact, Culturecom is not targeting the tech-savvy college kids in big cities like Beijing or Shanghai, but is eyeing the average citizen who is hungry to get his hands on a computer and log on. Consumers in cosmopolitan cities tend to go after the brands, which is why Culturecom isn`t targeting its product in brand-conscious Hong Kong. ``People with limited money look at the price tag first,`` Jack Chu says. Culturecom is looking to make Chinese 2000 as cheap as possible, although the crowd that came to test out the goods said they wished it were even cheaper. The company is also buttering up wholesalers and distributors. It is giving the product to wholesalers for 300 yuan, and to consumers at 600 yuan. Wholesalers make 30 yuan for every product sold. As soon as a few technical kinks are ironed out, the company`s software platform Chinese 2000 will be launched into the mainland market. There are already 450,000 orders from computer wholesalers and distributors. Frank Cheung Wai-tung, a former head of red-chip conglomerate Cosco who is Culturecom`s chairman and chief executive officer, even thought of an instalment plan where users can pay as little as 10 yuan a month. ``Now at that price everyone can afford it,`` the chain-smoking chief says. Of course Culturecom has a big task ahead. ``We`re looking at 95 per cent of the population who doesn`t have a computer and doesn`t have access to the Internet,`` says Jack Donitz, president of Recursive Technologies, a Los Angeles-based management consulting firm, who is writing the business plan for Culturecom. Mr Donitz also points out that besides being affordable it`s easy to use. The basic package bundles together easy-to-use applications such as a Word clone, a Photoshop clone, an Excel clone and Powerpoint clone. The technology behind the product and network is fuelled by a number of US engineers, academics and geeks who serve as a sounding board to Culturecom.

Microsoft, China team up for IT education

She said the company was experienced in training people in IT skills at different levels - from software users to architects.
Initially, Microsoft will working with the Occupational Skills Certification branch of China`s Labour and Social Security Ministry, using Microsoft`s Office XP and Windows XP software progams.
The old computer skills test used by certification authorities was found to be out of touch with the real world. Those who passed the test found it difficult to apply what they had learned.
Microsoft`s textbooks and testing system present a breakthrough in this respect. People taking the test confront real situations.
The biggest change in the new testing method is that it factors in the amount of time each person needs to complete the test.
It also records the number of attempts needed to complete a task, for example, when gauging word processing or computer language skills.
Those who pass the test receive a certificate from the national certification authority and Microsoft.
"The certification authorities will begin providing other dual-evaluation certificates soon [in conjunction] with international IT giants," Li Jingshen, the head of the certification centre said.
Several hundred thousand people take the centre`s IT certification test every year.
Microsoft`s co-operation with the Liaoning Publishing Group to provide IT textbooks for primary and middle school students is another attractive venture for the US firm.
The company said that the books would be the "best available" on IT for students at this level.
Zhao Ju, the deputy-director of Liaoning Publishing House, said his firm was co-operating with Microsoft because of the US company`s authority and reliability in the field of global information technology.
China began compulsory IT courses in senior high schools nationwide and in junior high schools in large cities at the end of last year.
The Ministry of Education said it would try to expand this programme to all junior high and primary schools in relatively-developed areas by 2005 and get the course to at least 90 per cent of China`s primary schools as soon as possible after that.
There were at least 100 textbooks available in Chinese bookstores on information technology, but they were either too technical or had no specific target age and completely ignored student needs, Wang Xiaowu, a Ministry official said.
Some schools have to try to compile some teaching materials themselves or just select items from computer textbooks available on the market.

Guangzhou plans 200,000-student `university city`

The Guangzhou Government has unveiled plans to build a university city in
the province to promote higher education and the development of high technology.
The planned zone will be the largest in China, occupying an area of 43.3 square km,
with target student numbers as high as 200,000 and a teacher population of up to 20,000.
Three other major cities in Guangdong - Zhuhai, Shenzhen and Dongguan - have already
designated sites for university cities in their drive to boost economic development
and manpower training. About 26 tertiary institutes, including Peking and Tsinghua
Universities, from across China have set up hi-tech institutes in Dongguan.
Beijing and Tsinghua also have similar establishments in Shenzhen,
where the municipal government is keen on postgraduate research in
science and technology. Guangzhou university city, to be located near Panyu,
has a bigger mission - to be the hub for learning, hi-tech research and academic
exchange for southern China. It is due to be completed in stages over three years.
The provincial government is prepared to put in $2 billion for land acquisition alone for
the site. Another $5 billion will be needed for the area`s transport infrastructure links to the city.
The future zone would also help meet the soaring demand for university places in the area,
said the Guangzhou newspaper Southern Metropolis News.
Guangzhou University is expected to be among the first institutions to have facilities there
for research in fields such as information technology and bio-technology.
The growth of university cities on the mailand reflects its huge market for higher education,
especially following the country`s entry into the World Trade Organisation,
said associate dean of the University of Hong Kong`s Faculty of Education, Cheung Kwok-wah.
Apart from having increased opportunities in the mainland, he hoped more mainland students
would in future consider the option of pursuing higher education in Hong Kong.

HK`s Culturecom seeks PC motherboard production cooperation - report

HONG KONG (AFX-ASIA) - Culturecom Holdings Ltd (343.HK) is in talks with mainland companies for a tie-up in the production of low-priced motherboards powered by the Via Dragon SCS 3210 CPU, the South China Morning Post reported, citing the company`s chairman Cheung Wai Tung.

The Via Dragon SCS 3210 CPU is a single chip Chinese central processing unit jointly developed by Culturecom with IBM Corp.

"Once we complete testing of the motherboard we can start producing it and people can use it to make low-priced computers costing as little as 2,000-3,000 hkd, less than half the price of most of the PCs on the market," he said.

He said IBM would also manufacture the CPU chips and provide technological support.

Hongkong 05.06.03 (asia-economy.de) Lange war es relativ ruhig um Culturecom Hld. Ltd. (0343/BMG2587F1068). Das sich aber etwas tut war an dem steigenden Kurs und Umsätzen zu bemerken. Heute kam nun die Meldung, das dass Unternehmen Gespräche mit verschiedenen Unternehmen führt, um einen Preiswerten Prozessor auf den Markt zu bringen, welcher im Befehlssatz die direkte Unterstützung chinesischer Schriftzeichen integriert. Dadurch sollen die Computerhersteller des asiatischen Landes in die Lage versetzt werden, im Niedrigpreisbereich deutlich bessere Performance-Ergebnisse zu erzielen. Entsprechend der Meldung, wird der Dragon SCS 3210 CPU gemeinsam mit IBM entwickelt. Im vergangenen Jahr war für diesen Bereich noch Intel im Gespräch.

Die Aktie von Culturecom steigt bis zur Mittagspause um 1,4 % auf 0,216 HK-$. In den letzten sechs Wochen macht das eine Steigerung von ca. 30 % aus. Von ihren alten Höchstständen ist sie aber noch „Meilenweit“ entfernt. Das 52 Wochenhoch liegt bei 0,42 HK-$.

Hongkong 10.09.03 (asia-economy.de) Culturecom Hold. (0343/BMG2587F1068) kündigte gestern an, dass Warrants im Volumen von 430 Mill. Stück zu 0,06 HK-$ auf den Markt gebracht werden. Erwartet werden Einnahmen in Höhe von 24,5 Mill. HK-$ welches als Arbeitskapital eingesetzt werden soll.

Diese Mitteilung verschaffte der Aktie bereits gestern einen kräftigen Kursschub und auch heute bei Handelsstart. Es ging bis auf 0,255 HK-$ nach oben. Bis zur Mittagspause ging es dann auf + 0,4 % und 0,248 HK-$ zurück.

Zu zweiten hätte ich eine Frage? Wenn in HK der Kurs aussetzt, dann auch in Deutschland??? E-force Kurs ist von 8 HKD auf 29 HKD in den letzten 3 Monaten gestiegen, mit sehr geringen Umsätzten, ich denke auch das da ein knaller kommt!

IV. Revenue Projection

CHL`s revenue will be from the sales of software and devices. The current revenue projection is based on products such as `Wen Chang 2000`, Voice Recognition System (for input), Voice Delivery System (for `speaking book`), Chinese Dictionary and Hand-signal Language Recognition System. Under a conservative projection of sales not more than 10,000,000 units of these products in total, the revenue will be in the region of USD150m against an estimated total development cost of about USD5.7m. Taking the Chinese market alone, our estimate is that the sales can easily top .25 billion providing revenue in excess of USD3 billion. As the product is also applicable to non Chinese based language application, the potential in revenue is even greater.

I. Latent Potential of CHL`s Database

We believe that CHL has the niche in R&D and comic contents database that will enable it to capture the yet to be fully realized `e-comic` potential.The databases of Batman was valued in excess of US$500m, how much would be the potential value of the classic Chinese comic database - DRAGON AND TIGER? The title has over 30 years history and over 1300 chapters. The current circulation is in excess of 40,000 copies per issue. There are potential of synergistic products yet to be capitalized.

CHL intends to develop `e-publishing` in comic, which will enable registered members to download comic directly from Internet into computer or pocket size `e-book`. The `e-book` is a user friendly concept which replaces the traditional paper version and yet afford the same level of portability. Costwise, it will also be efficient as the printing cost and distribution cost representing a significant portion of the overall overhead can be reduced significantly. The contribution to the bottom line of this new product is expected to reflect from next year onward.

Hong Kong has a traditional comic culture. The comic characters of DRAGON AND TIGER, for example, are well known to readers from age 15 to 50. Imagine the potential of incorporating `local` comic characters into theme park entertainment concept such as the forth coming Disney Land in Hong Kong. A successful foreign import will be even more successful if it can also cater for the local favorites. It may appear to be a far fetching idea now, but Walt Disney and Culturecom could come together just for that. This could potentially enhance CHL`s asset further.

A Cosmic Drifter Challenges Microsoft--
Chu Bong-foo and Chinese Computing

A head of gray hair, a pair of kung fu shoes-Taiwan-educated Chu Bong-foo, the father of Chinese computing, has traveled throughout the Chinese-speaking world in pursuit of his revolutionary mission of computerizing the Chinese language.

In March 2002, Chu Bong-foo came to Taiwan from Macao. As well as promoting his new book Cosmic Drifter, he also presented some of the fruits of his research.
Quirky computer genius Chu Bong-foo has a head full of oddball ideas, and his own way of doing things. More than 20 years ago, his invention of the "ChangJie" Chinese character input system came as a boon to countless Chinese computer users. Since then he has grappled with all kinds of thorny problems to make Chinese-language computing a reality. He pursues the most advanced computer research, but his heart is wedded to the mission of transmitting Chinese culture. Sixty-five-year-old Chu Bong-foo has never given up working for the computerization of Chinese. Amid a tide of Westernization accompanying the influx of technology, this has been a lonely and difficult endeavor. But Chu has always continued his revolutionary work, oblivious to praise or criticism from others.

In early May, just as the Business Software Alliance and the Ministry of Justice were beginning a crackdown on pirated software, this newspaper advertisement attracted computer users` attention: "Scared of getting caught using illegal software? Stop worrying with Chinese 2000-your best solution!"

The advert stressed that the "Chinese 2000" operating system is Linux-based, highly stable, and compatible with Microsoft`s office software, and that one can use the included modem dial-up or broadband functions to go online and exchange instant messages or email with Microsoft Windows users. Also, all the system commands are in Chinese. An interactive installation program guides the user through the entire installation process, making it quick and easy. An even bigger selling point is that a copy of Chinese 2000 costs only US$50, just a fourteenth of the combined price of US$736 for a Microsoft operating system and office software suite.

Chinese 2000 is published by the Culturecom group, of Hong Kong. The advertising campaign is evidently pitched against Microsoft, and plays on computer users` frustration at high software prices. Behind the scenes, the development of Chinese 2000 is led by Chu Bong-foo, "the father of Chinese computing."


Taking on Microsoft


Chu Bong-foo describes himself as "a revolutionary." In the 24 years since he invented the "ChangJie" keyboard input method for Chinese characters in 1978, he has always continued to lead his students into new areas of research, to develop such products as Chinese-language computing platforms, central processing units, and e-textbooks, and attempt all kinds of "mission impossible."

In early March, Chu Bong-foo came from Macao to Taiwan to discuss the production of e-book readers with manufacturers, to launch his new book Cosmic Drifter, and to give lectures at National Taiwan University and National Taiwan Normal University on the "e-textbook" and "the theory and practice of `genetic` analysis of Chinese characters."

A head of short, gray hair, a casual jacket, a pair of kung fu shoes. Chu Bong-foo is a frequent traveler between Macao, Hong Kong, Taiwan and mainland China. When he opens his mouth, the words flow like a great river, and his eyes sparkle with wit and determination behind his broad-rimmed glasses. "I`m a thorn in the side of people in lots of different fields, because there are so many things I`m not satisfied with. But don`t get the idea that I`ve been pushed around a lot. My philosophy in life is to be a fighter. The more I`m attacked, the feistier I get," he said at his book launching.

Chu Bong-foo is not afraid to admit that his defeat when he took on Microsoft ten years ago caused him to throw in the towel for a while. In 1991, Microsoft was just preparing to enter the Taiwanese market with a Chinese version of its Windows operating system. Chu, who was then aged 55, was very displeased by Microsoft`s attempt to monopolize the entire market for Chinese operating systems, working environments and application suites, and its refusal to publish the details of its Chinese Windows interface. He changed directions to help the Institute for Information Industry create a Chinese system to run on Windows 3.0, but unexpectedly got caught up in a bitter battle.

A powerful advertising campaign by Microsoft overshadowed Chu Bong-foo`s product ads, and the following year, after Microsoft had successfully captured the market with Windows 3.1, Chu retreated into reclusion to concentrate on developing his "genetic" analysis of Chinese characters-rather like Confucius, who, when he was unable to convince rulers of the wisdom of his views, "took to a raft and floated on the sea." But although Chu was out of the limelight he was far from idle, and with some students led a life in the style of a traditional Chinese academy, variously staying in Hsintien in Taipei County, at the foot of Mt. Tulan in Taitung County, and at Yangmei in Taoyuan County.

In March 1999, Cheung Wai Tung, chairman of Culturecom Holdings of Hong Kong, sought out Chu Bong-foo, and the two hit it off immediately with their shared concept of "using technology to advance culture." Chu accepted an invitation to join Culturecom as a vice president, and moved to Macao with his students. Early last year when the price of Culturecom shares leapt from HK$0.48 to HK$1.20, Chu, who has a 10% shareholding in the company, found that his net worth had rocketed to some HK$100 million, at least on paper. After this he had more resources available with which to fight his good fight, and his research achievements began to fall into place.

"A Hong Kong reporter once asked me whether my assault on Microsoft wasn`t like David taking on Goliath. I told him I never said I wanted to bring down Microsoft, but can`t I oppose them? Bill Gates knows I oppose him. Gates` response was, `Lots of people are against me, but he won`t get anywhere any time soon.`"

"Ten years ago in Taiwan I lost out big time, but that doesn`t mean that from then on Microsoft has been invincible." Chu points out that at the end of last year when the Beijing City government awarded a software procurement contract, Microsoft`s US$29 billion bid lost out to a Linux-based offering from a consortium of Culturecom and six other software companies, priced at US$7 billion. After this first success, if mainland China succeeds in resisting Microsoft across the board, European countries will also join in.


Goodbye to bookbags


After many years out of the limelight, Chu Bong-foo has once again entered the fray with the fruits of his research. The first element of his strategy for Chinese information engineering to be launched is an "electronic book" reader.

In the broad sense, an electronic book, or e-book, means published content that is stored in the form of digital data on any kind of electronic storage media, such as a hard disk, floppy disk, optical disk or IC card, and transmitted through a data network to the user`s digital reading equipment, such as a PC, notebook, PDA or even a mobile phone.

The first generation e-book reader developed by Chu Bong-foo`s team is called "Culturecom eBook v. 1.0." At present it has only basic reading functions, weighs 350 grams, and is the size of a 16-mo format book. It includes a Chinese-language CPU, running at a speed of over 40 MHz. The display screen is a special "surface-stabilized, cholesteric-texture liquid-crystal display" (SSTC-LCD), which retains the last page image even when the power is turned off. This means that electric current is only needed when turning the page, so the unit uses very little power, and can run through over 10,000 page turns on two AA batteries. This is equivalent to two months` continuous reading.

The price of the e-book reader can be expected to be less than RMB800. The reason for this low price is that it uses a Chinese-enabled CPU developed by Chu Bong-foo`s own team, that costs only a third as much as similar products. The CPU chip includes an embedded Chinese character generator that allows the device to display 32,000 different simplified- and complex-form Chinese characters. The memory is large enough to contain 40 of Jin Yong`s martial arts novels.

In April 2001, Culturecom and mainland China`s People`s Education Press (PEP), which is under the control of the PRC education ministry, announced that they were launching a joint venture to set up Renwen E-Textbook Technology Company. Their aim is to develop the mainland`s primary and secondary school textbook market, which serves a student population numbering in the hundreds of millions. PEP will be responsible for course planning and content, while Culturecom will provide support with e-book technology. The joint venture partners plan to produce 200 million e-book readers within five years. This autumn they will initially supply a million of the devices to first-year senior high school students. The trial units will be manufactured by the Taiwanese listed company Chen Uei Precision Industry Company.

In mainland China, an average of RMB100 is spent on textbooks per student each semester, with something like 100 million books being printed. This not only consumes a lot of timber, but also produces pollution. To make e-book readers you don`t have to cut down trees, and they can be reused. They can be loaded with several textbooks at the beginning of each term, and new teaching materials can be added according to learning needs, by downloading from the Internet. The saving in printed books makes the devices extremely environmentally friendly.

"The product we`re supplying at the moment is user-friendly but rather utilitarian," says Chu Bong-foo. He says they plan to use polymer materials to reduce the thickness of an e-book reader to that of a sheet of paper, so that users can feel as at ease with them as with conventional books; they will also be solar powered. He predicts that these ideals can be realized in six to seven years.


Technology needs culture


In fact, the e-book is only one small step in the computerization of Chinese. Chu Bong-foo`s groundbreaking inventions are all intended to prove that technology does not mean the destruction of Chinese culture. "Of all the ancient civilizations, Chinese culture is the last to have felt the impact of alphabetic writing systems. Only Chinese characters still retain their pictographic origins, and record the Chinese way of thinking," he says.

For this reason, he has spent decades assiduously researching the "genes" of Chinese characters, to analyze the basic structure of Chinese writing on the basis of six essential factors: the characters` constituent elements; the sequence of those elements; the shapes of the strokes and stroke combinations that make up the characters; recognition features; sound (in those characters with a phonetic element); and meaning. Using these factors, Chu hopes to make computers "understand" the concepts underlying the Chinese writing system. "Developing information technology without considering culture is putting the cart before the horse, because culture and content are the soul of the information industry," he says.

Chu Bong-foo is constantly developing new tools based on Chinese character "genes." His big projects include Chinese 2000, which he believes will be better than Microsoft operating systems, a Chinese-enabled central processing unit to replace Intel CPUs, e-book readers intended to change human reading habits, and a multimedia university.

One of the greatest of Chu`s projects is a plan to develop an information network for mainland China`s huge population of poor farmers. His idea is to get farmers to wear electronic watches with voice recognition systems and visual displays, with which they will be able to send each other messages by microwave, and which will even be able to measure their blood pressure and pulse, to let them know the state of their health. But more importantly, through this network farmers will be able access such information as where best to buy fertilizer, where to sell their produce, and how to borrow money, to allow them to sell their produce effectively. After the commercial network is established, educational functions can also be added, so that rural children need not rush into the cities, but can receive education over the network at his "multimedia university."

Seeing the many surprising sparks that fly out of Chu Bong-foo`s brain, people often urge him to quickly launch products on the market. Comic book publisher turned information technology
firm Culturecom is hoping budget computers priced for
themainland home-user market can help it recoup a
HK$300 million investment in a new chip product.

Chairman Cheung Wai-tung said Culturecom was in talks
with mainland companies to co-operate on the production
of low-price motherboards powered by the Via Dragon
SCS 3210 CPU, a single-chip Chinese central processing
unit jointly developed with IBM Corp.

Once we complete testing of the motherboard we can start
producing it and people can use it to make low-price
computers costing as little as HK$2,000 to $3,000, less
than half the price of most of the PCs on the market,`
Mr Cheung said.

He said the CPU and motherboard were the major costs in
making personal computers.

In China, there are about 33 million to 35 million PC
units, but only about 20 per cent are home PCs. The low
penetration rate of home computers in China is because
most people can`t afford them,` Mr Cheung said. If we
can sell PCs at HK$2,000 to $3,000, a lot of people
will be able to buy them.`

Culturecom said IBM would also manufacture the CPU
chips and provide technological support.

Mr Cheung said the SCS 3210 CPU chipset was comparable
with Intel`s chipset in speed but with Chinese processing
capability and a fraction of the price.

Culturecom said its Chinese CPU chip cost US$25, about
half the price of an equivalent Intel chip without
Chinese-processing capability. Mr Cheung said Culturecom`s
motherboard embedded with the low-price CPU would sell for
US$79 - about one-third of the price of most rival brands.

Culturecom is expected to announce co-operation deals
with several IT product makers from the mainland and
Taiwan during a trade fair next month. The company aims
to sell 200,000 to 300,000 chips and motherboards this
year, generating about US$3 million to $4.5 million
in net profit.

da steht drin, das cc die restlichen investitionen
von 300 milionen (hk$ oder $)für die vorgesehene entwicklung und forschung,
noch in diesem geschäftsjahr aufwenden wird.

des weiteren wird bekannt gegeben,
das ein neues modell des cpu für den verkauf freigegeben
wurde. der stückpreis für den einzelhandel soll 35 US$
kosten und für die grosshändler soll das stück 24 US$
berechnet.

die zahl der aufträge des neuen produktes wurden
gesenkt.

momentan hat cc 10 millionen cash und hat nicht vor weiteres kapital aufzunehmen.

so in etwa ist es zu verstehen!

also ist der starke Rückfall der letzten Tage auf die enttäuschenden Zahlen zurückzuführen. Obwohl der Kurs heute sich schon wieder gefangen und unverändert geschlossen hat. Zu hoffen lässt auch der Umsatz, der bei fallenden Kursen längst nicht so hoch war, wie bei steigenden. Noch mehr runter darf sie nicht sinken.
Tja, dabei hat sie auch im Vergleich zu anderen eher mäßig zugelegt in den letzten Monaten..

nur 2 tage später verkündet er, das 100.000 cpu`s verkauft worden sind und weitere 200.000 stück folgen sollen.

gehen wir mal davon aus das die 300.000 cpu`s zu je 24 US$
an den Großhandel im 2.halbjahr verkaufen werden, dann hätten wir einen umsatz 7.200.000 milionen us$.
das sind ca 64.000.000 milionen hk$,
das ist schon soviel wie im gesamt jahr 2003 (55 mio.kd$).

(Infocast News) Culturecom Holdings (0343) has announced to restructure Chinese 2000 Group. Culturecom will dispose of its entire 49% equity interest in Chinese 2000 Group to C2L at a consideration of $88.2 million, and C2L will issue 36.75 million C2L shares to settle the consideration. The transaction is conditional upon the disposal of 51% equity interest in Chinese 2000 Group by eForce Holdings (0943) to C2L. After the transaction, C2L will be held as to 40.83%, 42.5% and 16.67% by Culturecom, eForce and Transmeta respectively. Trading in the shares of Culturecom has been resumed today, while that of eForce remains suspended since its suspension on July 23.

As a result of the transaction, Culturecom has made a theoretical unrealised premium of approximately $77.403 million which it has no intention to recognise in its accounts as a profit or intangible asset.

Chinese 2000 Group currently has a 65% equity interests in Beijing Redflag Chinese 2000 Software Technology Co Ltd, which is engaged in the development of Redflag Chinese 2000 operating system. The audited consolidated net loss of the Chinese 2000 Group for each of the two financial years ended 31 March, 2003 amounted to approximately $25.131 million and $20.205 million respectively.

On the other hand, C2L has entered into a software development agreement with Transmeta, pursuant to which C2L will pay to Transmeta a total fee of US$200,000 to acquire the updates of the Midori Linux System and US$66,000 per month for Transmeta`s provision of development, maintenance and support services to C2L for a term of 20 months. Culturecom and eForce will provide a guarantee to Transmeta in respect of C2L`s payment obligations of the service fees to Transmeta. C2L will be principally engaged in the development and sales of Midori Linux application software and embedded devices.

Comics yield to a literate MPU

TAIPEI Taiwan -- In an unlikely turn that wouldn`t be out of place in the funny papers, a comic book company will field a microprocessor in China that pointedly limits the use of intellectual property from the West.

With the speed of a Bruce Lee karate chop, Hong Kong-based Culturecom Holdings Ltd. is shedding its past as a hawker of popular kung fu titles, like Dragon and Tiger Heroes, and springing forth to enter the dragon`s market (see July 31 story) .

Culturecom, which enjoys close ties to the Chinese government, has launched an IBM PowerPC-based system-on-chip equipped with a unique Chinese character-generating algorithm. Quicker than you can say "hai yah!" the SoC seems poised to pull ahead of competing systems by dint of using only 256 kbytes of on-chip memory to interpret more than 32,000 characters.

The ViaDragon, or V-Dragon, and its embedded code run in a Linux environment " a combination that is being keenly watched by Chinese officials who want to avoid reliance on intellectual property from Western companies, such as Microsoft and Intel, as China plows big bucks into modernizing government, education and state-owned industrial institutions.

"The government is using our chip to fight Microsoft. They think that Microsoft is too much of a monopoly, and they cannot allow a monopoly situation by Western manufacturers in China," said Benjamin Lau, senior vice president of Culturecom.

Culturecom claims its algorithm allows the chip to generate at least 32,000 Chinese characters, in both the traditional and simplified forms used in Taiwan and China, respectively. Its creators say the ViaDragon architecture can be extended to more than 50,000 characters, in three fonts and a range of sizes, and can interpret other Asian languages, such as Korean and Japanese.

The company is hoping that the mix of extensibility and meager memory will attract mobile-system makers, a massive market in China, along with network PC makers selling intohigh-volume government jobs.


Out of comics


In its current form, Culturecom has existed for only about four years. Before that, it was a widely known publisher of kung fu comics. The company still derives revenue from that business but has now drop-kicked into a tech firm, thanks to a group of overseas Chinese investors who bought out the comics business, relegated it to a side venture and kept the name because they liked it. Lau said buying an existing company and gutting it was easier than setting up a new business in Hong Kong.

Though young, Culturecom has already shown its determination to be a serious player. It has parlayed a close relationship with China into an exclusive deal to sell electronic-book readers, priced at roughly $72 and subsidized by the government, to all of China`s middle- and high-school students " about 200 million kids. The readers are considered a test system for the first iteration of ViaDragon, its embedded algorithm and the Linux Midori operating system that Culturecom recently licensed from Transmeta Corp.

Culturecom is hardly the first to come up with a Chinese-character-generating algorithm. Its version uses the popular Can Jie coding system, a way of separating characters into their base components and assigning numbers to them that was developed by Chu Bong Foo, a 20-year veteran of Chinese character-coding systems and the vice chairman of Culturecom.

There are basically three ways to generate Chinese characters. The ViaDragon employs a stroke-based approach (Chinese characters were originally drawn with brushes), rather than an outline or character-encoding system. A stroke-based algorithm saves memory space, important for manufacturers of small-form-factor and mobile devices.

In contrast, a character-encoding method uses a lookup table of bit maps. The method is fast, but a 24 x 24 font for roughly 7,000 simplified Chinese characters needs 500 kbytes. Also, Chinese character bit maps don`t scale that well.

The outline method, meanwhile, defines a set of points along the outside of the character and fills in the space to create it. An outline font can more easily scale to different sizes than character encoding, but the trade-off is using up 2.5 to 3 Mbytes for 7,000 simplified Chinese characters.


Compression and look-up tables


The Culturecom architecture`s extensibility seems to hinge on a combination of compression techniques and cleverly devised lookup tables, which reduce duplication for different fonts and strokes by accessing a set of common rules, according to David A. Smallberg, a senior lecturer in computer science at the University of California-Los Angeles. With a small team of colleagues, Smallberg, a specialist in software internationalization and Asian languages, analyzed the ViaDragon last year.

"The combination of efficient encoding, compact internal representation, `smart fill` for strokes and other techniques will be difficult to duplicate," wrote Smallberg in a report on the findings. "The ability to generate tens of thousands of characters in minimal space, efficiently and with pleasing aesthetics cannot currently be accomplished by any other technique."

Besides pushing ViaDragon, which will be offered as the IA3210, to government and industry, Culturecom is eyeing commercial markets such as smart toys or other platforms that use an LCD. At the chip`s official coming-out party in Hong Kong about two weeks ago, the company said it had orders for 600,000 units, which would go into network PCs in factories and government offices.

Although Culturecom is pushing a platform, including a reference design for network PCs, it acknowledges that the greatest asset is not hardware but the embedded algorithm. Culturecom outsourced SoC development to IBM Corp., which will manufacture the chip in an 0.18-micron, five-metal-layer CMOS process. Lau said the company is willing to license the algorithm and is in talks with several vendors to do so. One, he indicated, is BLX IC Design Corp., the government spin-off that designed China`s first CPU, Godson-1.

In January, the second-generation V-Dragon, better suited to run multimedia apps in a PC environment, will roll out, he said. Japanese and Korean versions of the algorithm will be ready by the end of this year.

of integrated computer will be closely related. I am
glad to announce that the HK Government and the
legislative council are strong supporters of the

The Chinese University, which is situated next to the
Hi-Tech Park in Tai Po, already has a fully equipped

0.13 micron. 0.13 micron is the newest IC production
technology. Up to now, only high performance product

Nachdem die sich jetzt wieder erholen, seh ich auch gewaltiges Potential auf 3-6 Monats-Sicht, wenn die ersten Zahlen zu den neuen Prozessoren kommen....Gute Kontakte, Coole Produkte...aber das muß jeder selbst entscheiden.

China: The next E-Book Central?
The spiffy machine to the left was not dreamed up in Peoria.

Where? Try China. And we`re talking about sophisticated technological development--not merely routine manufacturing.

Mainland China just could be the next E-Book Central, especially considering Washington`s less-than-full enthusiasm about national digital libraries and nonmilitary high-tech R&D in general.

Zillions of e-books in the hands of ordinary Chinese? This is more of a "why not" than "why."

With millions of students to educate, China must worry more than the rest of the world about the costs of printed textbooks.

And given all the complexities of reproducing Chinese characters, the electronic medium will make sense.

So it`s no surprise that China`s central planners and businesses are greenlighting e-books in a big way--and that the latter are working on projects with Taiwan (long a leader in e-books and other portable technology).

The China Digital Library Project will spend the equivalent of more than $137 million dollars over five years. The National Library of China now has text, audio-visual or image versions of almost 200,000 books, according to Zhang Yanbo, the NLC`s vice director.

And it would seem very likely that many of the NLC`s items will reach Chinese homes, not just library computers. Consider the number of Chinese Net users--more than 56 million according to a study from last year. That`s just a tiny fraction of the Chinese population; imagine what happens when both e-books and the Net go mainstream in China.

Meanwhile hardware makers are gearing up.

--Many dedicated e-book devices from companies such as Taiwan`s Argosy Research (die nutzen den via-dragon cpu von cc ), as noted this past spring in the TeleBlog, are going on sale or about to. "Using e-books in schools with local government cooperation can resolve copyright issues and create volume demand," Argosy vice president George Wang was quoted in Global Sources. --A $99 e-book device from Argosy Research--reviewed in depth by Black Mask--is on the way. Several hundred thousand may be sold next year. The Argosy machine will be using technology from China`s CultureCom, which itself is producing the Easyread e-book reader shown at the start of this TeleBlog item.

--These machines are benefitting from the efforts of Professor Chu Bong Foo to enable the easier entry of Chinese characters into computers. In a related vein, CultureCom, his company, says a $25 chip can generate "approximately 32,000 Chinese characters in several fonts and in various sizes, using no more than 256KB of memory (as opposed to 20 to 30GB of memory needed for existing coding systems, not available in a single chip sehr clever)."

--A Chinese company will use AMD chips in a Student PC webpad designed mainly with e-books in mind.

This is interesting trade-magazinish news, but the true consequences could be far greater. Remember, the e-libraries and the mushrooming number of users with advanced hardware will build on each other. Nice, well-deserved synergy. Then think about what it all means internationally. As one Chinese librarian has noted in The Development of the China Digital Library, the Chinese want to use e-libraries to share knowledge with other countries, and not just those with large Chinese populations:



Besides Chinese language, there are many other languages online...China, with its rich culture of 5000 years, is one of the largest countries in the world. We have the duty to do our best to share our information resources with the world and make the world we live in smaller and smaller.
That`s something for Washington to consider. Could it be that the Chinese will achieve greater future success in international relations by not just investing in technology but by also reaching out with it to the rest of the world?

If nothing else, the more influential the Chinese grow in e-books, the less power could be enjoyed in Asia by the American-dominated Open eBook Forum--especially if it keeps ignoring such issues as the need for a nonproprietary consumer e-book format and the elimination of DRM gouges.

Perhaps the National Institute of Standards and Technology should take more of an interest in e-books as national and international resources--and consider more than the immediate interests of Adobe, Microsoft, PalmDigital Media and Overdrive, the biggest financial supporters of the OeBF.

na ja, schwamm drüber... culterecom (kaufpreis ca. 0,34€ im Jahr 2000) gehört zu den wenigen, die noch nicht ganz den bach herunter- gegangen sind. interessanterweise kamen dann immer wieder gute meldungen, zwar sehr sporadisch, aber doch. als nur noch das Comicgeschäft aktuell war, habe ich die hoffnung ganz aufgegeben, mit der Schrifftsofware klingt die sache schon anders.
hast du vielleicht eine vorstellung, wo culturecom in 2 jahren steht? kann es eigentlich passieren, dass die firma auch mal pleite geht? (sowas habe ich bei Upgrade erlebt, die seht gut standen, sogar bei 77 Euro- jetzt sind ´die bei 0,11 €)...

ich kann dir nicht sagen wo die in 2 jahren stehen,
für mich ist das notgedrungen lontg-term investment.
welche firma ist heute schon mit sicher, sihe worldcom usw., klar könnten die auch abschmieren.
ich zweifel aber daran, da eigentlich die projekte
jetzt richtig ins rollen kommen.
mich faszinieren die verschieden projekte.
vor allem der draht zu den höheren funktionären in china,
ohne die geht mal gar nichts.
selbst die japaner switchen jetzt auf linux, u.a. ist matsushita mit dabei.
die haben die chips von v-dragon geordert.
ich gehe von aus, das wir ende des jahres ganz oben stehen werden.

naja spekulationen gibt es reichlich auch am hong-konger markt ... ansonstern wäre cc auch nicht mit dem 20zig fachen ihres jahresumsatzes bewertet. dieser jahresumsatz wurde aber zu über 80% aus dem comic geschäft generiert und davon widerrum der größte teil in hong-kong. was passiert nun mit dem umsatz wenn die comic aktivität auf prc und japan ausgeweitet werden (was sie schon seit sommer sind) und wenn das erste mal umsätze aus dem high-tech segment mit in die rechnung gehen. ich bin da vorsichtig geworden - wenn ich mal an unsere damaligen träume mit q9 erinnern darf. aber wenn man sich die homepage ansieht fällt vor allem auf, dass jetzt alles ineinander greift: ebook, sciic, chinise2000, v-dragon. überhaupt: alle teilhaber, zumindest die großen sind ordentlich verlinkt, es ist wesentlich besser lesbar ... der laden mausert sich tatsächlich. wenn die nun wirklich einen fuß an die erde bekommen mit ihrer technik kann es losgehen ... die nächsten zahlen sollten das aber wiedergeben ... sonst geht es wieder gen süden ... von den einstiegskursen bin ich auch noch reichlich entfernt ... werde aber je nach entwicklung noch mal nachlegen ...

A TECHNICAL BREAKTHROUGH has opened the door for a cheaper personal-computer alternative in China, where consumers` budgets are tight and the government is eager for an innovative success that will put the country on the same stage as technology giants.
A well-known Chinese computer scientist working for a Hong Kong company has tackled a daunting challenge: making a computer chip respond to the thousands of symbols in Chinese and other Asian languages. The goal is to allow Chinese-language computers to operate more swiftly and, free from dependence on English-reliant software, be built at a lower cost.
Today, the company, Culturecom Holdings Ltd., plans to unveil the first products -- a DVD player and a word-processing device -- that other companies have built with chips using the innovation.
At the least, the achievement is a remarkable engineering feat. The scientist, Chu Bong-foo, has found a way to put Asian characters in position to command binary code -- the 1s and 0s that run a chip`s transistors. Because instructions inside chips are written in English, Asian-language input and output must contain layers of translation.
With this breakthrough, Asian languages could be used instead of English to write software, says Benjamin Lau, Culturecom`s chief strategist. Digital devices for Asian markets wouldn`t need the components that translate between Asian languages and English.
In technical terms, skipping the translation process will speed the performance of digital products, though today`s chips are so speedy that few users likely will notice a difference. But Mr. Chu and others at Culturecom believe they have achieved something with bigger implications: freeing microchips from the stranglehold that benefited companies in Roman-letter-dominant countries.
Culturecom, a publishing company acquired several years ago as an investment vehicle by Cheung Wai-tang, a veteran of Hong Kong`s finance and shipping industries, aims to provide its technology to companies that want to build a chip-based product. But it is taking special aim at the PC, whose design is dictated by chip maker Intel Corp. and software developer Microsoft Corp., both of the U.S.
Culturecom has designed circuit boards for lower-cost PCs using an International Business Machines Corp. PowerPC microprocessor that includes its Chinese-character technology. The design for the machine uses a Chinese variant of the Linux operating system, which Culturecom licensed from Transmeta Corp., a U.S. chip maker and promoter of alternative computer designs.
Dozens of companies have tried and failed to develop mass-market, low-cost alternatives to the standard PC during the past decade. Culturecom also must cope with the efficient software-writing tools and processes that have emerged from decades of English-language software development.
But Mr. Lau says developing countries, including most in Asia, can`t stand still while entry-level PCs continue to be priced around $500. `You have to be rich to afford them,` he says. `Information technology should be fair to everybody.`
Throughout Asia, political and business leaders are becoming more critical of U.S. dominance of high technology, citing both high costs and security problems. China, Japan and Korea recently aligned to promote the use of open-source software, such as Linux, citing the need for alternatives to Microsoft. Thailand`s government last year promoted low-cost, Linux-based PCs for consumers, causing a sharp increase in sales and leading Microsoft to sharply lower prices there. Several Asian governments are promoting new Internet-address standards because most existing addresses are assigned to U.S. businesses and institutions.
Chinese leaders are pursuing a breakthrough that puts the country on better footing in patent negotiations with innovators elsewhere. China`s government often backs homegrown technology with financial or regulatory assistance, though Culturecom has received no such help.
The scientist behind Culturecom`s breakthrough, Mr. Chu, during the 1980s created a widely used system for putting Chinese characters into a PC. In the system, called changjie, a user calls up a character by typing keys that refer to the character`s parts. Often, the computer completes a character by looking up and matching the parts in a library stored in memory chips or on a hard drive.
The technique wouldn`t work inside a single microprocessor, though, because so much memory is needed to store tens of thousands of Asian symbols. Mr. Chu`s innovation is to `build the characters up through a sequence of operations, storing just the elemental features,` says John Mathews, a professor at the Macquarie Graduate School of Management in Sydney who published a case study on the company last summer.
Mr. Chu relies on strokes that form characters and the rules for using strokes. With the algorithm that he and Culturecom engineers designed, the only storage required in the microprocessor is for the most important strokes.

Culturecom Takes On Wintel Via Linux

Hong Kong-based Culturecom Holdings, which has reported growing sales of its $15-$30 V-Dragon chip, believes that, in conjunction with embedded Linux, it can help replace costly Wintel systems in China.

Currently, Culturecom will target its CPU chip at embedded Linux devices and special-purpose computers, hoping to challenge Wintel in the future. An article in Reuters notes that Culturecom is expecting to sell between 1.5 and 2 million of its IBM-made V-Dragon chips in 2004, with an order for 1 million chips coming from Orient Semiconductor Electronics, which will use them in home entertainment centers. Datang Telecom & Tech Co has ordered 300,000 chips, to be used in special-purpose accounting system computers.

The V-Dragon chip has already been used in the "Peking University e-Learner," an e-book platform used in 1,200 Beijing schools that can store four to eight million Chinese characters on a 16MB flash memory card, the equivalent to "the total text volume of all subjects in one academic year." In the future, however, Culturecom is hoping that the chips will be used in more general-purpose computing devices

Erstmal schönen Dank für den kurzen Geschäftsbericht. Die letzte Tech-Aktie die ich hatte war RHAT (Red Hat)-ebenfalls ein Linux basierender Softwarehersteller.Auch die hatten und haben auch einen Deal mit IBM. Dieser wurde oft schlechtgemacht- der Kursverlauf war jedoch eine Augenweide.
Ich glaub ich leg noch ein "paar" nach. Diese Kombination von Soft-/und Hardware für diesen Wachstumsmarkt - einer solchen Verlockung erliegt man einfach.
Bin gespannt wann sich das Warten noch mehr lohnt.

und china datang telecom was zu tun bzgl. dem v dragon
cpu. das ist eine ansage an wintel (windows & microsoft),
die gemeinsam den pc markt dominieren.

worden und wird vom staat und ibm supportet.
es ist deutlich günstiger und man ist nicht von einem
monopolisten abhängig. culturecom soll angeblich schwarze

Im Vorfeld der Zahlen geht seit gestern ein Ruck durch den Wert. Bekam man die Aktie vor zwei Tagen noch für 0,32 HK-$ so mußten heute zum Handelsschluss 0,415 HK-$ hingelegt werden. Während des Sitzung erreichte der Wert mit 0,425 HK-$ ein neues 52 Wochen Hoch und befindet sich wieder im Bereich vom Mai 2002.

MÜNCHEN (COMPUTERWOCHE) - Einen Chip, über den Binärcode mittels asiatischer Schriftzeichen interpretiert werden kann, hat der Informatiker Bong-Foo Chu aus Hongkong entwickelt. Er biete vor allem für chinesische Programmierer Vorteile, die Software für entsprechend ausgestattete Geräte nicht mehr in Englisch verfassen müssen, berichtet das "Wall Street Journal".

Instruction Sets von CPUs können nur englische Befehle in Binärcode übersetzen. Der neue Chip dient als Übersetzer, der die Schriftzeichen zunächst auf Englisch übersetzt. Erst dann werden sie an das Instruction Set geschickt. Die Übersetzung der Befehlssätze kostet zwar Rechenzeit, was jedoch laut Chu bei der Leistung moderner Prozessoren kaum zu spüren ist.

Der Honkonger Hersteller Culturecom will in Kürze erste Geräte vorstellen, die mit dem Chip ausgestattet sind - einen DVD-Spieler und einen Computer zur Textverarbeitung. Culturecom hat außerdem Hauptplatinen entwickelt, die auf PowerPC-Prozessoren von IBM basieren, die um den Übersetzungschip erweitert wurden. Sie sind für den Einsatz in Rechnern gedacht, die mit einer chinesischen Linux-Variante betrieben werden. (lex)

Hi Leute, habe mir Freitag nochmal 20-tausend ind Depot gelegt. Habe mein eaktien damit mal wieder verbilligt. Habe Culturecom seit 2000 für 0,29 gekauft :-(
Hatte sie schon abgeschrieben, aber nach den Tollen News, denke ich mal, daß ich nicht vor 1€ verkaufen werde. Habe jetzt so lange gewartet, dann schaffe ich das auch noch ;-)
Bei 40- Tausend Aktien , wären es dann 40-tausend Euro Wow!

Culturecom gehört seit Tagen zu den meistgehandelsten Werten in Honkong und hier in Deutschland tut sich so gut wie nichts.
Auch wenn noch keine neue Nachrichten gekommen sind, es müßte doch etwas von der Kursfantasie (80% in einer Woche)überschwappen. Bin gespannt auf die Zahlen Ende März.
Ich erwarte einiges.

chip computer assembly lines inYun`an County, Guangdong
Province, with a capacity of 1000 computers per day.

It marks the commencement of China`s first eTown project.

An eTown is a remote information processing factory,

complete management system".

The embedded chip computer was jointly developed by IBM

(Infocast News) After several days of rocketing share price and turnover, rumour has it that Culturecom Holdings (0343) is going to have a placing. The stock`s price surged to $0.64 at one point today but fell back eventually, dropping to a low of $0.58 and it stands at $0.59, down 1.667%. Turnover amounts to $82.3 million.

The turnover of the stock jumped significantly all of a sudden recently, with trading volumes of over 200 million shares in each of the past few days and a high of 559 million shares on one day, while turnover also broke the $100 million mark for consecutive days.

Market says that IBM, the company`s strategic partner, will be the placee and the stock can be pumped to the level of $1 if the rumours turn out to be true.

The company manufactures the V-DRAGON CPU jointly with IBM, and orders for 1.6 million units of the CPU have been received so far.

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Watch out, Wintel -- a new "Draglin" is coming to China.

Hong Kong`s Culturecom Holdings Ltd. has combined its Chinese-friendly V-Dragon central processing unit (CPU) with the open-source Linux operating system.

The plan is to take on the dominant "Wintel" combination of PCs that run on Microsoft Corp`s Windows software using Intel Corp CPUs.

In its drive to take on Wintel, Culturecom has found powerful allies in IBM Corp, which is making and supporting the new chips, and the Chinese government, which is promoting Linux as a cheaper alternative to Windows.

The V-Dragon chips have scored some initial success since hitting the market last summer, with 1.5 million to two million units expected to be shipped this year, said Benjamin Lau, senior vice president and corporate strategist.

Chips sell for US$15 to US$30 each on average, or well below the cost of a comparable Intel chip with Windows software.

"We want to make sure the price can come down, so we`ve shied away from any Wintel peripherals," he said.

Culturecom`s two biggest orders to date have come from Taiwanese speaker maker Orient Semiconductor Electronics Ltd. TW> , for one million units over two years, and China`s Datang Telecom & Tech Co. Ltd., for 300,000 over a year, he said.

Unlike the traditional Wintel systems in which software and chips are separate entities, Culturecom`s CPUs come with the Chinese character capability and Linux embedded in the chips.

Intel chips now account for nearly 90 percent of the China PC market, while Windows -- often pirated -- accounts for the vast majority of PC-based operating systems. The country is now the world`s number two PC market, with 13.3 million units sold last year.

China is trying to address the problem of rampant piracy in its computer industry partly by promoting the use of Linux, a system that is technically free and available to anyone.

Rather than take on big PC makers that mostly use Intel chips and Windows software, Culturecom will initially target the market for customized computers used for functions such as accounting and administration, Lau said. He added that such computers now outsell traditional PCs by a factor of five worldwide.

Datang plans to use the chips in accounting computers, while Orient Semiconductor will use them in home-based entertainment centers that combine functions like DVD players with traditional computing.

"It can be used for PCs, but for us to find success... for the first two years we are going after the specialized device market," he said. "PCs are a more sophisticated market."

Heute lief der Markt in HK nicht so toll. Deshalb hat sicherlich auch CC etwas abgegeben. aber die 5% Minus heute ist eigentlich nichts gegen den Anstieg der letzten 2 Wochen. Was mich persönlich überzeugt das dort große CC gekauft haben. Fonds, IBM etc.
Vielleicht heute oder Morgen noch abwarten mit kaufen. Dann sollte es wieder nach oben gehen.
Ist nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis die ersten Fonds auch hier CC kaufen. Und dann sollte auch der Umsatz hier stimmen.

Aber wer schlau ist, steigt vor den Fonds ein! :-)

(Infocast News) Tiger Tech Holdings (8046) announced that Tiger Tech Mobile Limited, its new subsidiary, is to become a strategic operational alliance with Culturecom Holdings Limited (0343). The new alliance aims to develop Culturecom`s V-Dragon CPU in combination with the company`s Thin Client Solution.

Tiger Tech is a joint venture established jointly by the company and Canadian Talgalder International. Peter Chun, Tagalder`s Manging Director, said that Taglader will invest a minimum of US$3 million in the alliance.

Benjamin Lau, Senior Vice President, Corporate Strategy of Culturecom, opined that the combination of its V-Dragon CPU, the operating system Midori Linux, the office software Red Office, plus Tiger Tech`s Thin Client technology, the expansion of its product in the mainland China market is in sight. Culturecom`s V-Dragon CPU is mainly sold in mainland China and Taiwan at present.

At the same time, Tony Hoo, Managing Director of Tiger Tech, said that with 60% of business of its Thin Client technology originating from mainland China, the alliance with Culturecom should further the expansion of the technology in mainland China. On the other hand, as the remaining 40% business of the technology comes from Taiwan, Thailand, Australia, the UK and the US, the alliance also serves the purpose of bringing Culturecom`s V-Dragon CPU to these markets.

Danke! Wie gesagt ich möcht bei CC rein. Hab aber in China schon schlechte Erfahrungen gemacht (Legend Group 894983).
LG ist Chinas größter PC-Hersteller und bei denen gehts seit 2 Monaten nach unten. Ich weiß schon, man kann die nicht 1 zu 1 mit Culturecom vergleichen. (Obwohl: selbes Land, selbe Sparte) Soll ich bei CC noch warten? Was meint ihr?

Schwer zu sagen, 1. Konsolidierung ist vorüber. Steigen trtz schlechtem Umfeld. Sicher können die 0,46Hk$ nochmal
kommen, aber tiefer sicher nicht. Ist aber auf lange Sicht egal,ob du bei 0,05 c oder bei 0,055 c gekauft hast.
Billiger wirst du sie bei uns eh nicht kriegen, we´nn überhaupt.

Hört sich wirklich nicht erfreulich an. Kapitalerhöhung, Verwässerungseffekte und Abhängigkeit von einem Fond bringen auf alle Fälle Unsicherheit. Wäre zumindest schön, wenn wir an der Kapitalerhöhung partizipieren könnten.
Hoffentlich packt Cc nächste Woche den 0,7 Widerstand, dann ist viel
Luft, wenn man diesen Chart überhaupt interpretieren kann(4 Jahre).

Auf gutem Chinesisch heißt es, solange der Deal zwischen Culturecom und dem eventuellem " Spender" nicht vollbracht ist, rät die Firma die jetzigen Shareholders sowie die, die es werden wollen, vorsichtig zu handeln.

Für uns heißt es, wenn die Zahlen Ende März gut sind, sprich wenn z.b Auftragsbücher voll sind, der Tausch von Aktien gegen Finanzierung ist positiv zu bewerten, weil man dann die Kohle wahrscheinlich für eine schnellere Massenproduktion anwenden möchte.

Culturecom Holdings Limited gab gegenüber der Stock Exchange of Hong Kong eine Erklärung ab in der mitgeteilt wurde, dass die Zunahme des Handelsvolumens und der Kursanstieg der Aktie registriert wurde, es aber keine Erklärung bzw. Gründe von Unternehmensseite her dafür gibt.
Weiterhin wurde mitgeteilt, dass keine Handlungen nach § 3 of the Listing Agreement gab, welche nach § 2 hätte bekannt gegeben werden müssen, da sie Kursrelevant wären.

Culturecom Hld. Ltd. (0343/BMG2587F1068), welche seit dem 29.03. bei einem Kurs von 0,69 HK-$ ausgesetzt war, kam heute lediglich mit einer Meldung, dass neue Aktien kommen werden. Mehr verwertbare Informationen gab es bisher nicht dazu.

Die Ankündigung neuer Shares scheint den Anleger nicht zu schmecken und sie verkauften heute bei Handelsaufnahme das Papier, so das der Kurs bis auf 0,53 HK-$ zusammenbrach. Im Nachmittagshandel konnte sich die Aktie leicht erholen und hat derzeit ``nur`` noch ein Minus von 14,5 % bei 0,59 HK-$. 09:11 (il)

It is being reported in the local media that Lenovo will launch Linux-based PC products in April.

Although the news has not been confirmed by Lenovo, Microsoft, a partner of Lenovo in the field of Linux for years, is said to be steadfastly refusing to comment on the situation, adding fuel to the rumors.

It is known that such IT magnates as Dell, HP, IBM, Intel, and Microsoft have been promoting the application of Linux-based PCs in China, and that Lenovo has been cooperating with Intel and Microsoft in the field. The latter two say that, even Lenovo is able to produce its own Linux-based PC, their cooperation would not be affected.

Self-Configuring Chips Part of IBM Vision

Future microprocessors from IBM Corp. will optimize their performance by altering themselves, adding memory or removing unneeded bits of circuitry on the fly, the company`s chief technologist said Wednesday.

The self-morphing chips, still in development, were disclosed as IBM revealed wide-ranging plans for the company`s current generation of chips, the Power5.

Big Blue hopes to work with outside technology developers to make Power chips a flexible, widely used driver of several kinds of computing systems, from high-end corporate servers to video game consoles and handheld devices.

For decades, microprocessors have gotten ever faster by cramming more and more transistors onboard, but the physical limitations of the materials involved is making it harder to shrink the dimensions much further.

Instead of relying on continual improvements in chip speed, future chips must be more cleverly designed to combine more computing functions, said Bernard Meyerson, IBM`s chief technologist. The self-altering chip is one means of achieving that.

Here`s how it would work. Continually running electrical current through a tiny circuit can cause its materials to erode, as individual atoms get stripped and dragged away by the electricity. Eventually the metal breaks.

Chip designers got around the problem by carefully choosing a blend of metals. Now, Meyerson said, IBM has developed a way to make the metal erosion happen at will _ when software running the chip determines that part of the circuitry needs cutting or tuning.

"It`s a bit frightening to the typical designer," Meyerson said.

He said early versions of the self-changing chips have been tested at IBM, which, like other computing companies, is pursuing means of making systems "autonomic," or self-healing and self-regulating. Meyerson said fully realized versions of the morphing chips would emerge in the next decade.

Of course, IBM has high expectations for its chip business right now. The division has struggled with soft demand and lost money, though executives have pledged it will be profitable in 2004. The technology group, which includes chips, was recently merged with the systems unit to accentuate their shared aims.

One goal announced Wednesday is for Power`s underlying architecture to be customized by developers of other systems, much as the open-source Linux operating system can be configured by its users. For example, a Chinese company, CultureCom Holdings Ltd., has tinkered with Power chips to get them to understand Chinese characters, removing the need for translation software.

Some analysts said IBM seemed to be making a more forceful attempt to compete against leading chip maker Intel Corp.

But IBM executives played down that suggestion, saying IBM would continue to sell servers with Intel chips because the market is big enough for both kinds of systems.

In trading on the New York Stock Exchange, IBM shares were down 48 cents to close at $91.84.

BM seeks to push Power chip into new markets

IBM made a raft of product and partnership announcements intended to help push its Power microprocessor beyond servers to an array of corporate and consumer devices.

IBM is observing a sea change in chip design: The industry is near the limits of the gains it can wring out of hardware advances, executives said. Future chip improvements will need to come from better integration of chips with the systems they run, in IBM`s view.

"Integration eclipses gigahertz, going forward," said Bernie Meyerson, who heads IBM`s semiconductor development. "You can`t make things smaller forever. What happens when the individual layers in your transistor get down to the dimensions of what they`re made out of, which is, roughly, atoms?"

IBM plans to address that challenge with two approaches that have been a foundation of its corporate strategy since Sam Palmisano took control as IBM`s chief executive. First, it will abide by its "on-demand" mantra and focus on a flexible, holistic approach to chip design, treating software and other system components as key to technical advancements, said Vice President of Technology and Strategy Irving Wladawsky-Berger. Second, it will work closely with outside partners.

Toward that end, IBM announced new licensing and manufacturing options and plans to build a community of development partners around its Power architecture. Sony has licensed the Power technology for use in future consumer electronics, and will work with IBM to customize the chips it will use.

IBM had a selection of partners and customers on hand to endorse its development strategy.

"It`s not about an architecture, it`s about the combination" of chips with other hardware and software products, said Red Hat`s EVP of Sales Alex Pinchev. IBM`s Power chips in combination with Red Hat`s Linux operating system have driven improvements in system virtualization and manageability, he said.

Representatives of Hong Kong-based Culturecom Holdings spoke of their forthcoming native-Chinese processing technology, under joint development with IBM since 2001.

"The ability to process in Chinese directly, without any translation software, will bring the cost for computing down tremendously," said Henry Chang Manayan, Culturecom`s executive director.

IBM also previewed at the event its Power5 processor, due out in the second half of the year, and announced that it will begin shipping in April blade servers based on the Power architecture.

One analyst attending the event said IBM`s development strategy differs significantly from those of its chip-making rivals, including Intel and Sun Microsystems.

"IBM is creating a computing ecosystem that can be pushed up or down. I can`t really think of anyone else who is doing that," said Charles King, Research Director of Infrastructure Hardware for Sageza Group. "Intel has taken a very different approach, of creating specific processors for specific markets."

King said he expects IBM`s strategy to be a successful one, and sees the Power architecture as an emerging industry standard. He also noted that IBM`s plans to open its development process gives the company access to a broader talent pool than is available to more proprietary designers.

"You get smart people to help you, and you see where that leads," King said.

Analysis: Comics yield to a literate MPU

TAIPEI Taiwan -- In an unlikely turn that wouldn`t be out of place in the funny papers, a comic book company will field a microprocessor in China that pointedly limits the use of intellectual property from the West.

With the speed of a Bruce Lee karate chop, Hong Kong-based Culturecom Holdings Ltd. is shedding its past as a hawker of popular kung fu titles, like Dragon and Tiger Heroes, and springing forth to enter the dragon`s market (see July 31 story) .

Culturecom, which enjoys close ties to the Chinese government, has launched an IBM PowerPC-based system-on-chip equipped with a unique Chinese character-generating algorithm. Quicker than you can say "hai yah!" the SoC seems poised to pull ahead of competing systems by dint of using only 256 kbytes of on-chip memory to interpret more than 32,000 characters.

The ViaDragon, or V-Dragon, and its embedded code run in a Linux environment " a combination that is being keenly watched by Chinese officials who want to avoid reliance on intellectual property from Western companies, such as Microsoft and Intel, as China plows big bucks into modernizing government, education and state-owned industrial institutions.

"The government is using our chip to fight Microsoft. They think that Microsoft is too much of a monopoly, and they cannot allow a monopoly situation by Western manufacturers in China," said Benjamin Lau, senior vice president of Culturecom.

Culturecom claims its algorithm allows the chip to generate at least 32,000 Chinese characters, in both the traditional and simplified forms used in Taiwan and China, respectively. Its creators say the ViaDragon architecture can be extended to more than 50,000 characters, in three fonts and a range of sizes, and can interpret other Asian languages, such as Korean and Japanese.

The company is hoping that the mix of extensibility and meager memory will attract mobile-system makers, a massive market in China, along with network PC makers selling intohigh-volume government jobs.

Out of comics

In its current form, Culturecom has existed for only about four years. Before that, it was a widely known publisher of kung fu comics. The company still derives revenue from that business but has now drop-kicked into a tech firm, thanks to a group of overseas Chinese investors who bought out the comics business, relegated it to a side venture and kept the name because they liked it. Lau said buying an existing company and gutting it was easier than setting up a new business in Hong Kong.

Though young, Culturecom has already shown its determination to be a serious player. It has parlayed a close relationship with China into an exclusive deal to sell electronic-book readers, priced at roughly $72 and subsidized by the government, to all of China`s middle- and high-school students " about 200 million kids. The readers are considered a test system for the first iteration of ViaDragon, its embedded algorithm and the Linux Midori operating system that Culturecom recently licensed from Transmeta Corp.

Culturecom is hardly the first to come up with a Chinese-character-generating algorithm. Its version uses the popular Can Jie coding system, a way of separating characters into their base components and assigning numbers to them that was developed by Chu Bong Foo, a 20-year veteran of Chinese character-coding systems and the vice chairman of Culturecom.

There are basically three ways to generate Chinese characters. The ViaDragon employs a stroke-based approach (Chinese characters were originally drawn with brushes), rather than an outline or character-encoding system. A stroke-based algorithm saves memory space, important for manufacturers of small-form-factor and mobile devices.

In contrast, a character-encoding method uses a lookup table of bit maps. The method is fast, but a 24 x 24 font for roughly 7,000 simplified Chinese characters needs 500 kbytes. Also, Chinese character bit maps don`t scale that well.

The outline method, meanwhile, defines a set of points along the outside of the character and fills in the space to create it. An outline font can more easily scale to different sizes than character encoding, but the trade-off is using up 2.5 to 3 Mbytes for 7,000 simplified Chinese characters.

Compression and look-up tables

The Culturecom architecture`s extensibility seems to hinge on a combination of compression techniques and cleverly devised lookup tables, which reduce duplication for different fonts and strokes by accessing a set of common rules, according to David A. Smallberg, a senior lecturer in computer science at the University of California-Los Angeles. With a small team of colleagues, Smallberg, a specialist in software internationalization and Asian languages, analyzed the ViaDragon last year.

"The combination of efficient encoding, compact internal representation, `smart fill` for strokes and other techniques will be difficult to duplicate," wrote Smallberg in a report on the findings. "The ability to generate tens of thousands of characters in minimal space, efficiently and with pleasing aesthetics cannot currently be accomplished by any other technique."

Besides pushing ViaDragon, which will be offered as the IA3210, to government and industry, Culturecom is eyeing commercial markets such as smart toys or other platforms that use an LCD. At the chip`s official coming-out party in Hong Kong about two weeks ago, the company said it had orders for 600,000 units, which would go into network PCs in factories and government offices.

Although Culturecom is pushing a platform, including a reference design for network PCs, it acknowledges that the greatest asset is not hardware but the embedded algorithm. Culturecom outsourced SoC development to IBM Corp., which will manufacture the chip in an 0.18-micron, five-metal-layer CMOS process. Lau said the company is willing to license the algorithm and is in talks with several vendors to do so. One, he indicated, is BLX IC Design Corp., the government spin-off that designed China`s first CPU, Godson-1.

In January, the second-generation V-Dragon, better suited to run multimedia apps in a PC environment, will roll out, he said. Japanese and Korean versions of the algorithm will be ready by the end of this year.

Wie wir bereits am Freitag berichteten, gehörte die Aktie von Culturecom Hld. Ltd. (0343/BMG2587F1068) an zwei Tag hintereinander zu den vom Volumen her am meisten Gehandelten und rangierte unter den Top 5.
Heute wurde eine Erklärung des Unternehmens veröffentlicht aus welcher hervor geht, dass sie dieses Volumen nicht erklären kann und von Seiten des Unternehmens keine Handlungen durchgeführt wurden, welche Anzeigepflichtig gewesen wären:

Nach wie vor ist nichts bekannt, was der Auslöser hätte sein können.
Heute ging sie bei 83,65 Millionen gehandelten Aktien auf Tageshoch von 0,51 HK-$ aus dem Handel. Das Plus betrug 5,15 %.

Festhalten es geht weiter!

Langsam mausert sich meine Culturecom von einer toten verwesenen Aktie zu einem Goldklumpen. Hat sich doch gelohnt ab und zu zu verbilligen! Kann nur hoffen, daß die Zahlen gut sind und nicht wieder irgend eine blöde News kommt.

Die Aktien von Culturecom und Softbank Inv. Int. gehören im Vormittagshandel zu den Volumenstärksten.
Culturecom konnte zeitweise um über 13 % bis auf 0,59 HK-$ zugewinnen. Bei einem Volumen von 226,7 Millionen gehandelten Aktien ( Platz 3 ) verzeichnet sie im Augenblick ein Plus von 11,76 % auf 0,57 HK-$.
Hier drüfte man wohl demnächst die Jahreszahlen 2003 erwarten. Das Fiskaljahresende ist der 31. März 2004.

(Infocast News) Culturecom Holdings (0343) has entered into an agreement with IBM pursuant to which Culturecom`s V-Dragon (a Chinese-character-generating central processing unit) and other Chinese-language computer equipment of the same series will be used by IBM`s servers, intermediary software and facilities. The target customers of the cooperation are mainland Chinese who have not used computer before.

The two companies have also formed a sales team to push forward the business development of their computer and information home electrical appliances in mainland China.

Ich kann es kaum glauben – Bewegung!
Da Phantasie heute kaum noch reicht, um Anleger von Hocker zu reißen, muß hier wohl mehr im Spiel sein. Nun, dann steckt doch mehr hinter all den –angenommenen – Aktivitäten der Vergangenheit (die teilweise schon wieder in Vergessenhgeit geraten sind)? Ist es, weil IBM sich dazugesellt? Oder weiß IBM (und einige Investoren) mehr? Wenn es sich nicht lohnt, wird kaum jemand Geld oder Investitionen in anderer Form anbieten. Was verbirgt sich alles hinter Culturecom? Angefangen vom Verlagsgeschäft bis zum…? Was passiert zur Zeit? IBM war schon lange mit im Boot. Das kann also nicht alles sein. Wer weiß mehr?

Nicht leicht zu verstehendes "Hick-Hack". Die Essenz des Berichts? Ich möchte mich nicht mit einer halb garen Wiedergabe in Deutsch blamieren und vielleicht noch falsche Zusammenhänge weitergeben. Könnte jemand mit mehr Erfahrung im Börsen-Vokabular einen zusammenfassenden 3-4 Zeiler schreiben? Eine rege Diskussion über diesen wirklich vielversprechenden Wert halte ich für sehr interessant und wichtig.

1. ADOPTION OF STATEMENTS OF STANDARD ACCOUNTING PRACTICE

In the current year, the Group has adopted, for the first time, the
following Hong Kong Financial Reporting Standard (`HKFRS`) issued by the
Hong Kong Society of Accountants (`HKSA`). The term HKFRS is inclusive of
Statements of Standard Accounting Practice (`SSAP(s)`) and Interpretations
approved by the HKSA.

SSAP 12 (Revised) Income Taxes

The principal effect of the implementation of SSAP 12 (Revised) is in
relation to deferred tax. SSAP 12 (Revised) requires the adoption of a
balance sheet liability method, whereby deferred tax is recognized in
respect of all temporary differences between the carrying amount of assets
and liabilities in the financial statements and the corresponding tax
bases used in the computation of taxable profit, with limited exceptions.
In the absence of any specific transitional requirements in SSAP 12
(Revised), the new accounting policy has been applied retrospectively.
The adoption of this SSAP has had no material effect on the results for
the current or prior accounting years.

2. TAXATION CREDIT

No provision for Hong Kong Profits Tax has been made in the
financial statements as the Group had no estimated assessable profit for
the year. The Group has no estimated assessable profits in other
jurisdiction for the year.

The taxation credit represents the overprovision of Hong Kong
Profits Tax in previous years.

3. LOSS PER SHARE

The calculation of the basic loss per share for the year is based on the
net loss for the year of HK$72,467,000 (2003: HK$149,362,000) and the
weighted average number of 3,058,898,000 (2003: 2,993,968,000) ordinary
shares in issue during the year.

The computation of diluted loss per share does not assume the exercise of
the exercise of the potential shares since their exercise would result in
a reduction in loss per share.

4. COMPARATIVE FIGURES

Certain comparative figures have been reclassified to conform with the
current year`s presentation. As a result, the gain on disposal of
subsidiaries of HK$16,328,000 in last year was reclassified as non-
operating result, and the operating loss for last year was changed from
HK$107,504,000 to HK$123,832,000.

(Infocast News) Culturecom Holdings Limited (0343) has halved its net loss for the financial year ended March 31 to $72.47 million. However, the company has been recording losses for the fourth consecutive financial year. The company`s Chairman Cheung Wai-tung said in the results announcement that sales orders in respect of VDragon CPU and its mother board have been received, and sales revenue thereof will be recognised when the products are delivered in next year, providing the company with a considerable profit. The Directors believe that the loss for the consecutive financial years will be improved once when the revenue from the group`s technology projects is generated in the coming year.

During the financial year of 2004, the company`s turnover dropped by 31% to $40.65 million while operating loss was almost halved to $56.27 million. The loss was mainly from the Chinese information infrastructure segment, but the operation`s loss has shrunk to $29.41 million during the period under review. Investment holding recorded a loss of $15.49 million, while the comic publication segment still managed a $380,000 operating profit. At the same time, an amortization of deferred development costs amounting $18.706 million was recorded.

On the other hand, the company recorded an unrealized gain of $15.6 million on investments, compared with a loss of $5.56 million for the same segment in the previous financial year.

As at the end of March the company had deposits with banks and other financial institutions in aggregate of approximately $69.809 million and marketable securities of approximately $65.948 million. The company`s net asset value was $390.736 million and net asset value per shares was $0.13.

HONG KONG, July 12 (Reuters) - Hong Kong`s Culturecom Holdings Ltd (0343.HK) and technology giant IBM (IBM.N) said on Monday they will strengthen their alliance to bring high-tech communications to rural China.

Under their latest tie-up, IBM and Culturecom will promote Culturecom`s e-Town product, billed as a cheap way to bring rural China into the computing age using low-cost network computers, DVD stations, set-top boxes and multimedia telephones.

Culturecom, which is preparing to launch its first e-Town in southern China`s Yun An County in Guangdong, will handle marketing, installation and management of systems, with IBM providing technical support.

IBM will supply much of the hardware used to make the e-Town systems, while Culturecom will develop the systems and provide support services.

Culturecom said it plans to build 100 e-Town networks in the next two years, and 250 within three. The networks will be paid for by local governments.

Hardware for such systems typically costs HK$2 million to HK$3 million (US$256,000 to US $$384,700) with software an additional HK$1 million, said Culturecom`s senior vice president Benjamin Lau.

A system at the upper end of that range is able to serve a township of up to 10,000 users, he said.

IBM and Culturecom already work together in Culturecom`s other major business, making computer central processing units (CPUs) with built-in Linux and Chinese language capability.

Under that alliance, IBM supplies chips to Culturecom, which builds in Linux and Chinese language capabilities and markets the finished product under the name V-Dragon.

Each of the new e-Town systems are expected to use at least 3,000 to 5,000 V-Dragon chips, said Lau.

IBM has been a strong supporter of Linux, a so-called "open source" free computer operating system billed as cheaper to own and operate than Microsoft`s (MSFT.O) Windows, which powers the vast majority of the world`s computers.

The Chinese government also strongly supports Linux as a way to avoid the high prices for Windows and related products.

Culturecom shares have more than doubled this year as the company signed its first orders for V-Dragon chips. The shares are up 112 percent year to date, closing at HK$0.56 on Monday.

Hoffen wir mal, dass diese Konstellation für eine Vormachtsstellung ausreicht. Wer hebelt eigentlich noch am Chinesischen Markt herum?
Vor Allem, wer ist noch in der Lage, mit den Asiatischen Schriftzeichen umzugehen? Gibt es Vergleiche zwischen existierenden Systemen? Es sind ja mittlerweile einige Pläne und Ansätze unseres "Lieblings"-Investments bekannt und auch vielversprechend, dem Kurs (vor Allem in Hinsicht auf ehemalige Höchstkurse) hat das aber bislang nicht so richtig geholfen. Klar- langsam aber stetig ist mir sehr lieb, ich habe aber schon das Gefühl, dass Mitkonkurrenten an Ähnlichem arbeiten und auch puplizieren, warum bewegt sich sonst so wenig? Denn ein überproportionaler Anstieg ist doch nur zu erwarten, wenn ein ebenso überproportionaler Vorteil in Hinsicht auf die Technik, das Marketing und die Akzeptanz auf der Habenseite der Companie stehen, oder?
Nun, zumindest freue ich mich auf weitere informative Postings, die mich in meinem Entschluß bekräftigen, investiert zu bleiben.

Bin neugierig wie lange es dauert bis die Zusammenarbeit Früchte trägt. Böse Zungen sagen ja, daß derjenige der sich mit IBM ins Bett legt nicht mehr erwacht.
Habe vor ca. 2 Jahren einmal RedHat in mein Depot genommen,und sie zur rechten Zeit wieder abgestoßen. Die haben ja auch einige Erfahrung am Linux Sektor. Die Zeit hat diesem Investment mehr als Recht gegeben, auch sie hatten und haben eine enge Zusammenarbeit mit IBM.
Es gefällt mir insbesondere die Implementierung der asiatischen Schriftzeichen, obwohl ich zu wenig EDV Erfahrung in diesem Punkt habe ob sich dies wirklich so negativ auf die Programmierung in diesen Regionen auswirkt.
Der "Volks -PC" zu erschwinglichen Summen, als Betriebssystem eine Linux-Version und dieser brache gigantische Markt, gepaart mit einem erfahrenen Big-Player, - kann das wirklich ein so schlechtes Investment sein?

Ich gehe davon aus, das wir unser Geld wiederbekommen (was für ein Trost, wenn man zu Höchstkursen eingestiegen ist). Das Ursprungsgeschäft "unserer" Firma, der Zeitschriften und Verlagssektor, sollte aber schon ausreichen, die Aktie relativ stabil zu halten. Das Soft- und Hardware-Engagement läßt zumindest der Fantasie nach Erfolg erwarten. Und auch wenn nicht erfüllte Fantasien in der Vergangenheit für riesige Verluste gesorgt haben, sind sie doch immer noch der Antrieb und die Motivation für Investitionen, wenn auch viel vorsichtiger. Wer treibt sich denn noch auf dem chinesischen Markt herum und stellt eine Konkurrenz dar? Mit welchen Produkten und vor allem mit welchen Kooperationen. Sind deren Aktienbewertungen und Bewegungen ähnlich gering. Immerhin hat sich Culturecom für die Zukunft positioniert. Es fehlt halt noch die Initialzündung…

(0343/BMG2587F1068) hat einen Auftrag von dem Yunan County Government, Provinz Guangdong, erhalten, um ein Netzwerk für die Stadt zu errichten. Es läuft unter der Bezeichnung „eTown“. Über finanzielle Details wurden keine Angaben gemacht. Von Seiten Yunan`s wurde mitgeteilt, dass die Stadt 28 Mill. HK-$ aufwenden will, um die Digitalisierung durchzuführen.

Although the news has not been confirmed by Lenovo, Microsoft, a partner of Lenovo in the field of Linux for years, is said to be steadfastly refusing to comment on the situation, adding fuel to the rumors.

It is known that such IT magnates as Dell, HP, IBM, Intel, and Microsoft have been promoting the application of Linux-based PCs in China, and that Lenovo has been cooperating with Intel and Microsoft in the field. The latter two say that, even Lenovo is able to produce its own Linux-based PC, their cooperation would not be affected

IBM matches Power with Linux
Earlier this year, IBM`s Power architects and forward-thinking partners held court at the Power Everywhere event in New York to extol the future of Power Architecture in all its manifestations. But what does all this ubiquitous Power mean for Linux?

IBM`s Power architects and forward-thinking partners extol the future of Power Architecture in all its manifestations: licensing opportunities for manufacturers; a development focus based on the collaborative model; and all-round opportunities for innovation. What does all this ubiquitous Power mean, though, for Linux on Power?

Nick Donofrio, senior VP, Technology and Manufacturing, Irving Wladawsky-Berger, and Bill Zeitler, speaking at the event, all touched upon the significant impact that Linux brings- not only to POWER technology`s present feats, but to the POWER design potential.

More than several years ago, when Linux detractors and naysers still preferred to declare Linux as "going nowhere," IBM visionaries like Irving Wladawsky Berger, Vice President of Technology and Strategy at IBM, saw the potential of Linux as a disruptive technology "going everywhere."

He and others at IBM could see its far-sweeping effect on IT users` economies of scale and partner progress strengthened by open architectures. In the business sector, from business users of PCs costing under $500 to those managing the world`s most powerful servers costing millions, Linux became a name first to watch, and subsequently to trust.

IBM`s bold move subsequently to adopt Linux across all its platforms and portfolios helped drive that trust, on Wall Street and for manufacturing titans, down to the smallest startups. That same instinctive, big-picture perspective is echoed in the IBM view of Power Architecture: significant in its far-reaching scope from embedded devices scaling up to the most powerful supercomputer that one can imagine.

Power Architecture is a phrase used in reference to micro-processing technology that delivers on 64-bit, powering everything from game consoles to small-business servers to high-performance computers.

In turn, Linux on POWER amounts to bigger, better, more affordable ways to do business for a growing Linux ecosystem of partners and business users of all sizes. Many leverage making Power Architecture in IBM`s eServer line, in the form of pSeries, iSeries, and Blades, as part of their portfolios.

"The POWER5 chip has more integration than any other product we`ve ever delivered," said Bill Zeitler, IBM Senior VP and Group Executive, IBM Systems and Technology Group, at the Power Everywhere conference. "We are convinced that there`s enormous opportunity as technology moves from a world driven by megahertz and gigahertz to a world driven by the level of integration."

The lesson of Linux

IBM`s lessons from Linux are manifest in plans to explore an open collaboration model for Power Architecture. IBM`s leaders know that an open development environment ensures a pace and level of progress that are not otherwise possible.

Irving Wladawsky-Berger and team first declared that Linux represented fundamental discontinuity and that is the word picked up on by Zetler: "We listened, adopted Linux, and put it on all out platforms, and that is why we went up in market share-because of the way in which we responded to this discontinuity."

IBM`s architects have once again responded to the pulse of discontinuity with Power Architecture. One of the significant announcements this year about IBM`s POWER strategy is that IBM is to explore a community model to guide the future of Power Architecture.

High noon for collaboration

IBM`s plans to explore an open collaboration model for Power Architecture is particularly significant to its future.

"Over the past decade," says Donofrio, "if we learned anything, from Java, Eclipse, and Linux and so on, it is that only through collaboration can technology become a platform for innovation-one that eliminates boundaries, and one that delivers genuine business value."

But, he adds, "We must be careful. The basic instruction set must remain tightly controlled to maintain software and application compatibility."

Similarly, Dr. Bernard Meyerson, IBM Chief Technologist, believes that an open ecosystem is key to Power Architecture`s future, but at the same time control of the processor architecture must be in place to ensure against corruption of the ecosystem.

"We have to lock down the architecture so that it cannot be randomly disrupted," he told the Power Everywhere audience in March. "The common standard determines how developers will talk to each other," he adds, noting that random alternations to the core architecture along with the core instruction set can invalidate all prior intellectual property and destroy the ecosystem.

A Community Around Linux

More IBM business customers as well as partners have been turning to Power Architecture`s features and functionalities via the eServer iSeries and pSeries family and eServer BladeCenter platforms.

They see real advantage in a union of power performance and strengths when combined with the flexibility of Linux. That ecosystem not only spans many types of organizations and industries but also geographies.

China, in its resolve to reduce IT dependency on foreign firms, has actively promoted the adoption of Linux as one sure path for home-grown innovations. One of its recent alliances with IBM has Power Architecture and Linux written all over it.

That alliance is with a company called Culturecom , Hong-Kong-based developers, who have made a name for themselves in the form of a CPU that is optimized for the Chinese language and intended for network PCs and handsets combined with Linux.

The significance of this innovation, says the company, is the ability to display Chinese-language text without slowing the performance of the device. Culturecom has customized Power microprocessor architecture to adapt to Chinese language characters and in turn specifically target Chinese applications.

Mr. Frank W. T. Cheung, Chairman of Culturecom, explains the importance of Culturecom`s joint efforts with IBM. "Culturecom`s strategic direction with the V-Dragon PowerPC, the CCG engine, and Midori Linux as China`s new embedded industry standard aligns perfectly with the vision of the Power Ecosystem."

Cheung believes that, with IBM and its commitment to fostering a strong Power partner ecosystem, Culturecom is well positioned to play "a dominant role" in China`s market.

Chinesische Wörter mit in Verbindung stehender Bedeutung oder Ton bestehen häufig durch "chinesische Alphabete" mit ähnlicher "Form" und "Ton". Sprachverarbeitung und -erkennenfähigkeit des CVPE wird von chinesischer DNA abgeleitet, die den Hauptteil der chinesischen Sprache entlang sechs Hauptattributen einschließlich seine "Form" und "Ton" einstufte. Das CVPE ermöglicht der CPU mit Extrafähigkeit, Stimme auf die traditionelle Sprachsynthese zu decodieren und zu verarbeiten. Indem es die Bedeutungen der begrenzten Zahl solchen chinesischen Alphabeten erkennt, kann das CVPE die Bedeutungen und die Töne der verschiedenen Kombinationen von Wörtern und von Sätzen mit vernünftigen Konnotationen, zu bestimmtem Grad erkennen. Dieses revolutionäre Konzept verwendend, ermöglicht CVPE chinesischer Intelligenz der natürlichen Sprache, indem es in die "generalisiert oder des gesunden Menschenverstands" Wissensbasis "der Konzepte" ausrichtet. Der Unterschied zwischen Intel-basierten und Power-basierten Rechnern ist bekannt? Im PC stecken Intel-Chips, oder vielleicht AMDs, aber keine Power-CPUs. Die finden sich bei IBM in Rechnern von der Workstation an aufwärts (und in Apple-Rechnern), aber nicht in den PCs. Außerdem werden die Power-CPUs gerne für Embedded-Geräte benutzt, weil sie deutlich weniger Strom fressen als die Intels/AMDs/usw.

Und die PCs von IBM wurden AFAIK ohnehin bereits in China produziert; viel dürfte es nicht mehr sein, was Lenovo in Sachen PC von IBM nicht weiß. Aber von den Power-CPU basierten Rechnern dürften sie nicht so viel Ahnung haben.

Die letzte Preisfeststellung war gestern bei 0,34 HK-$.

Transmeta verkauft Crusoe-Produktlinie an chinesisches Unternehmen
Der US-amerikanische Chipdesigner Transmeta verkauft seine Prozessor-Produktlinie Crusoe an die in Hongkong ansässige chinesische Firma Culture.com Technology Limited (Culturecom). Außerdem lizenziert das US-Unternehmen die Herstellung und den Verkauf von 130-nm-Efficeon-Prozessoren an die Chinesen, teilt Transmeta mit.

Das Geschäft, das im vierten Quartal dieses Jahres abgeschlossen sein soll, steht aber noch unter dem Vorbehalt der Erteilung einer Exportlizenz durch das US-amerikanische Handelsministerium. Bis dahin will Transmeta weiterhin Crusoe- und Efficeon-Prozessoren herstellen. Support für 90-nm-Efficeon-Prozessoren will das Unternehmen auch danach leisten.

Culturecom zahlt für das Geschäft im Voraus 15 Millionen US-Dollar. Dazu kommen später Lizenzgebühren durch Verkäufe von Crusoe- und Efficeon-Produkten, heißt es weiter in der Mitteilung von Transmeta. Culturecom hatte zuvor schon von Transmeta Midori Linux für die Anwendungsentwicklung lizenziert. In diesem Zusammenhang hatten die US-Amerikaner eine Minderheitsbeteiligung an der Culturecom-Tochergesellschaft Chinese 2 Linux erworben.

Transmeta hatte Anfang April ein neues Geschäftskonzept vorgestellt. Das Unternehmen wolle sich auf den im 90-nm-Fertigungsprozess hergestellten Efficeon und das Lizenzierungsgeschäft konzentrieren. Mit Culturecom hat Transmeta nun wohl den Produktionspartner gefunden, den es seit Anfang dieses Jahres sucht. (anw/c`t)

Seven years ago Transmeta (TMTA) was the buzz of Silicon Valley -- even though no one knew what the company was up to. Linus Torvalds had gone to work there, but the normally loquacious Finn had clammed up. While the secret was hardly of Watergate proportions, one trade magazine sent a reporter to stake out the company`s parking lot. A mysterious ad campaign preceded Transmeta`s first product launch in 2000.

The actual unveiling of the product was inevitably anticlimactic. The company`s Crusoe family of microprocessors promised lower power consumption and heat generation, enabling the creation of laptops with longer battery life. Critics bashed the chips for being underpowered compared with Intel`s latest and greatest. Transmeta struggled to find a market, and recently it sold off most of its chipmaking business for $15 million to Culturecom Holdings, a Hong Kong company better known for publishing comic books.

How did this come to pass? For starters, Intel (INTC) reacted rapidly and came up with its own power-sparing technologies, which are now in wide use. Transmeta`s revenue dropped from $35.5 million in 2001 to $17.3 million in 2003, the year Torvalds left the company.

Transmeta`s prospects don`t look very bright now. The company`s cash dropped by about $12 million in the most recent quarter; if it continues at that rate, Transmeta will be out of money in less than a year. (Its management claims that the cash burn rate will soon decrease to about $5 million a quarter.) But even if the company goes out of business, its ideas have left a mark on enterprise computing.

While Transmeta`s low-power chips were initially targeted at laptops, they also found a market in blade servers. The attributes important in a mobile PC -- low power consumption and heat generation -- are even more vital in a dense rack of servers stacked one on top of the other in a crowded data center. This imperative is also driving the likes of AMD (AMD), IBM (IBM), Intel, and Sun (SUNW) to develop multicore chips.

Transmeta`s influence may continue if the company manages to roll out a product based on its LongRun2 technology, which controls transistor leakage, the flow of current that occurs when a transistor is off. Transistor leakage has gotten progressively worse as chips have continued to shrink, and Intel`s Andy Grove has cited it as a threat to Moore`s Law. While Fujitsu, NEC, and Sony (SNE) have licensed LongRun2, none of the three has yet rolled out a product incorporating the technology. Transmeta`s technology may not be able to extend the company`s life span, but if it manages to extend that of Moore`s Law, we`ll all be indebted to the pioneering startup.

und riesen Umsätze heute in HK....ich denke, dass wir ganz schnell die 0,05 Euro wieder sehen werden

Warten wir mal ab, ob das auf längere Sicht etwas mehr
Schub in die Aktie bringt. Ich würde mich ja schon freuen,
wenn sie sich (gern auf etwas höherem Niveau) bis zum
Durchstarten stabil verhält . Dann wüßte ich zumindest,
nicht auf eine Nullnummer gesetzt zu haben. War mir da
mitunter nicht immer ganz sicher. War halt eine lange Zeit
sehr ruhig.

Zwischenzeitlich hätte ich mein Geld auch gern mal verflüssigt
und woanders reingesteckt. Es nicht getan zu haben, war
bislang eine reine Bauchentscheidung. Man spekuliert eben
einfacher (beruhigter) mit der einen oder anderen positiven
Nachricht und Hinweisen auf Aktivitäten.

(Infocast News) Culturecom Holdings Limited (0343) announced that all 660 million warrants have been fully placed under the placing. The placing has been completed on September 28 and dealings in the warrants on the Stock Exchange are expected to commence on October 3.

The company earlier announced the placing of 660 warrants of $0.038 each to no fewer than 100 investors and securities dealers through the placing agent on a best effort basis, raising $25.08 million in aggregate with approximately $24.1 million of net proceeds to be mainly used for general working capital as to advertising and promotion of the company`s technology products and general administration expenses of the company.

Ins Auge fällt heute u.a. die Aktie der Softbank Investment International (Strategic) Ltd. Im Vormittaghandel konnte sie um 10,4 % auf 0,053 HKD zugewinnen. Mit einem Volumen von 92 Mio. gehandelten Shares gehörte sie unter den Top 5.

Ebenfalls unter den Top 5 im Volumen mit 177 Mio. Shares ist die Haier Elec. Sie legt um 1,77 % auf 0,23 HKD zu.

Die Aktie von Culturecom Hld. liegt mit einem Kursanstieg von 15 % unter den Top 5 Performer im Vormittagshandel. Sie steigt bei einem Volumen von 46 Mio. Shares auf 0,168 HKD.

Transmeta: Crusoe-Verkauf geplatzt
Auflagen für Export-Genehmigung nicht rechtzeitig zu erfüllen

Im Mai 2005 hatte Transmeta angekündigt, seine Prozessorserie Crusoe an Culture.com aus Hongkong zu verkaufen, nun ist das Geschäft geplatzt. Culture.com wird auch nicht wie geplant Transmetas Efficeon-Technik lizenzieren.
Die Unternehmen haben die entsprechenden Abkommen aufgelöst. Ursprünglich war vorgesehen, dass Transmeta seine Crusoe-Prozessoren an Culture.com abgibt und dem Unternehmen zudem eine Lizenz für die in 130-Nanometer-Technik gefertigten Efficeon-Chips einräumt. Culture.com wollte entsprechende Produkte herstellen und verkaufen.

Schuld seien die Auflagen der US-Behörden, denen man nicht in ausreichend kurzer Zeit nachkommen könne, so die beiden Unternehmen. Es sei klar geworden, dass man in der vorgegebenen Zeit keine Export-Genehmigung für die Technologie erhalten werden.

Keine Meldung in diesem Board, dies schon seit Monaten.
Fassen wir mal kurz zusammen.
Geschäftsmodell ein Softwaregigant im Reich der Mitte zu werden, dies auf LINUX-Basis, mit IBM als Mentor klingt ja nicht wirklich schlecht.
Der Hardwaresektor nach dem geplatzten Deal ja mehr als fraglich.
Der Kurs lächerlich.
Macht es Sinn da mal ein paar Stück aufzunehmen ??
Einen potentiellen Faktor 3 sehe ich allemal.

Hi Franzwerner,

was ist denn an dem Kurs so lächerlich? ....Das ist halt nur ne kleine Comic-Klitsche, die viele Millionen Verluste macht und vielleicht 60 - 100 Angestellte hat.....an der Börse ist sie noch immer mit ca. 30 Mio bewertet......da gibts genug Läden an der Börse, die bei der Kapitalisierung bessere Voraussetzungen haben...
