Die extreme Wachstumsrate von fast 40 Prozent der Halbleiterindustrie im laufenden Jahr werde 2001 zwar nicht wiederholt, erklärte der Präsident der Motorola-Halbleiter-Sparte Fred Shlapak auf der Bauelemente-Fachmesse electronica (bis 24. November) in München. Zu erwarten seien Steigerungsraten von 20 bis 25 Prozent. Auf Grund der hohen Nachfrage habe Motorola weltweit seine Halbleiterproduktion aufgestockt.
Motorola entwickelt im Halbleiterbereich zusammen mit Siemens Dresden die Fertigungstechnik für die nächste Siliziumscheiben(Wafer)-Generation mit einem Durchmesser von 300 Millimetern. Gegenüber den bisherigen 200-Millimeter-Wafern bieten die neuen Scheiben Platz für die 2,5fache Anzahl von Chips, ein Quantensprung für die Herstellung höher integrierter Chips.
Im laufenden Geschäftsjahr werde die in Austin (Texas) ansässige Halbleitersparte des US-Konzerns Motorola ihren Umsatz zum Vorjahr voraussichtlich von 7,4 auf acht Milliarden Dollar (18,6 Mrd DM) steigern, sagte Shlapak. Die Investitionen seien von rund 1,5 auf zwei Milliarden Dollar hochgefahren worden. Motorola habe Halbleiterfabriken in Europa, Asien und Europa. Chase H&Q sieht Motorola als "buy"

Die Analysten von Chase H&Q bestätigen ihr „buy“-Rating für den Mobilfunk-Technologiekonzern und setzen ein Kursziel von 50$ für die Aktie fest. Motorola werde nach Ansicht des Hauses am morgigen Dienstag auf einem Investorentreffen einen verhalten positiven Ausblick geben können, der allerdings nicht zu einer Börsenrallye der Motorola-Aktie führen werde. Motorola verliert heute 1,1%. Motorola ist einer der Giganten im Mobilfunkbereich und deckt mit seiner Angebotspalette ein weites Spektrum in diesem Bereich ab. Mit seiner Handyproduktion nimmt Motorola weltweit den zweiten Platz nach Nokia ein. Mit einem Marktanteil von 14% ist das Unternehmen auch zweitgrößter Hersteller von Netzinfrastruktur. Mit seiner eigenen Chipsparte nimmt Motorola weltweit den dritten Platz ein.

Iridium deal locked us out, say investors

Satellite investors in the United States have accused Motorola and former executives of the bankrupt Iridium LLC of denying them a reasonable chance to acquire the company`s 66-satellite operation.

Iridium, the global mobile satellite system that just won`t go away, appears to be headed toward a relaunch as a slimmed down, vertically-marketed service, after a U.S. bankruptcy court accepted a bid from a new investment company to take over the system.

But the losing bidders are accusing the new company, Iridium Satellite LLC-headed by Dan Colussy, a former president of Pan American Airways - of acting unfairly to gain control of the satellite system - which analysts have valued at between $5-7 billion.

Iridium Satellite LLC`s offer is mainly debt, and includes only $6.5 million cash, a fraction of what others bid. And immediately the new company received court approval for its takeover bid, the company appeared to withdraw its stated plan to get the Iridium system operational within 60 days.

Gene Curcio, the head of Venture Partners, which was attempting to make a $27 million cash offer for the assets, said, "I think Motorola, Iridium and Colussy, conspired to defraud the creditors out of $6.5 billion."

Curcio and others say the new company`s executives colluded with the original Iridium management team and Schaumburg, Illinois-based Motorola, the original sponsor of Iridium and a main creditor in the bankruptcy case, to fix the competition for Iridium and give control over to a group affiliated with those who were behind the project to start.

At least five bidders have been trying to get approval to buy the Iridium assets from creditors since Motorola obtained court permission to decommission the satellites in March this year. This month the New York court accepted a $25 million bid from Iridium Satellite.

The court was being advised by Motorola and the original Iridium LLC, and lawyers appointed to handle the bankruptcy filing did not treat competing bids fairly, according to Curcio and the other bidders.

The other bids for the assets "didn`t even get looked at by the court" said Curcio, because trustees and lawyers who were supposed to be representing the creditors were working for Motorola and the winning bidder.

Curcio said he is considering filing criminal and civil complaints against the companies and individuals involved.

Iridium Satellite`s Colussy, said last week that he had no response to the allegations. "You (had) best go to the bankruptcy court officials on that," he said. "It was a very carefully considered decision."

But Carl George, chief executive of IR Acquisition Group, which offered to pay $42 million in cash for Iridium, also is highly dissatisfied with the outcome of the case. He said Edward Staiano, former chief executive of Iridium LLC, and other top Iridium executives are working behind the scenes for Iridium Satellite, "which seems like an enormous conflict of interest".

Staiano was at the helm of Iridium during much of the period that led to the bankruptcy, and thus, set the wheel in motion for the bankruptcy filing. George said Motorola had put up financing to help the winning bid and excluded all the other bidders from meetings and the sharing of information needed to participate in bidding for the assets.

Motorola spokesman Rusty Brashear said that Motorola would retain a small equity stake in Iridium Satellite LLC, consistent with its ownership of the Iridium North America gateway, which has continued in operation in support of U.S. government data services. Brashear said he was unaware of any other investment or financial support to Colussy`s company.

Brian Zetlen, chief executive of Seattle Scientific Corp., was also involved in the bankruptcy case as a potential large, new Iridium client. He had wanted to use capacity on Iridium to launch a technology called Parallax, an aircraft safety system that would replace black box accident recorders with a satellite based data system to report problems on aircraft in flight.

Zetlen said that he too believes there has been collusion between Motorola and Iridium Satellite that has unfairly blocked the other bidders, including the bid from a venture capital group called Silver, with which he was associated.

Relaunch retracted>
On November 15, the day the court accepted its bid, Iridium Satellite issued a statement saying that it would relaunch the global mobile telephone service within 60 days but the next day, the statement was retracted and a public relations manager said Iridium Satellite would have nothing to say about its plans until it got closer to launching service.

The retracted statement, however, did reveal some details about the prospective new owner and its plans. Iridium Satellite LLC is headed by Dan Colussy, a former president of the Pan American and Canadian Pacific airlines, and a current director of Constellation Energy Group of Baltimore.

Colussy became involved with Iridium during the period when investment firm Castle Harlan had considered buying the assets, several sources said.

Colussy`s bid includes $6.5 million in cash and $18.5 million in debt, a level that was being criticized by the losing bidders as paltry.

"Iridium Satellite LLC will continue to provide commercial satellite communications to the U.S. government and plans to re-launch affordable satellite communications services to those industry segments that have a particular need for satellite communications (government, military, humanitarian, heavy industry, maritime, aviation, adventure) within 60 days," the retracted statement said.

A revived satellite system would be operated by Boeing Space and Communications Services, of Seattle, Washington, rather than by Motorola, which still has 130 people operating the constellation at a satellite control center near Washington DC.

Boeing could run the Iridium system with only one gateway, reducing the operational costs greatly from what Motorola and Iridium LLC had been spending in its heyday, when the monthly burn rate for the system was $100-$110 million.

MADRID, Nov 28 (Reuters) - The mobile arm of Spanish telecoms group Telefonica TEF said on Tuesday it had awarded the first phase of construction contracts for its next generation UMTS mobile network to Nokia NOK1V, Ericsson LMEB and Motorola Inc. MOT .

Telefonica Moviles TEM -- which is seeking to build a mobile empire across Europe and has just floated on the bourse -- said it would spend about 20 billion pesetas ($103 million) to build the network in Spain`s 16 biggest cities.

The three telecoms equipment companies are due to install 750 base stations in cities with more than 250,000 inhabitants by August next year.

In a mandatory filing to Spain`s security regulators, Telefonica Moviles said it planned to spend about 5.3 billion euros $4 to install and maintain its UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) network in Spain.

SCHAUMBURG, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 29, 2000--Motorola, Inc. and Sega Corporation have signed an initial agreement that calls for Sega to develop games for select Motorola next-generation multiple communication phones. This alliance will allow consumers to play an assortment of Sega games on Motorola`s new category of wireless devices. This marks the first time Sega games can be played on a wireless phone.

These new multiple communication phones will feature mobile computing capabilities to allow users to load applications, such as games, to their phones. The agreement anticipates the introduction of Motorola`s new application-upgradeable handsets, which are expected to be available in the first half of 2001 through iDEN® network operators including Nextel Communications and Southern LINC in the United States and Clearnet Communications in Canada. The phone`s high-resolution display and graphics capabilities are designed to enhance the gaming experience.

The first of these phones will ship with one pre-installed Sega game, according to the terms of the agreement. The puzzle game, Borkov, challenges users to remove blocks in a matrix to match a changing pattern. The game features high-resolution graphics to cheer and prompt player moves. Additional games will be available for users to download from the Internet.

Motorola Communication Equipment to Complete Vital Link between Earth and the International Space Station
Upcoming sixth space shuttle mission to ISS will make advanced S-Band communication equipment operational.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 29, 2000-- Motorola (NYSE:MOT - news) Wednesday announced the upcoming launch of the last link in the communication system that assures voice and data commands are transmitted and received between Earth and the International Space Station (ISS).

Mission 4A, with a five-member STS-97 crew, is scheduled to lift off in the Space Shuttle Endeavour on Nov. 30. Motorola`s S-Band telemetry and control transponders will be on board.

The Endeavour crew plans to activate the S-Band communication once it is interfaced with the Motorola assembly and contingency baseband signal processor (ACBSP) that was launched Oct. 11, 2000 on Space Shuttle Discovery.

Oron Schmidt, communications and tracking systems manager for NASA, said the Space Station will use the S-Band for low data rate communication to provide an operational data link for commands, telemetry and voice between the Mission Control Center in Houston and the ISS. High data rate capability supplied by Motorola`s advanced communication equipment will be installed on the ISS early next year.

This Ku-Band communication system will eventually allow the transfer of scientific data and video from the research conducted on the ISS Laboratory module to Earthbound investigators and science experts participating in NASA`s efforts to advance the growing field of Telescience.

``What hasn`t been done in space before is the transmission of High Definition TV (HDTV) images. These pictures will come directly into the High Rate Frame Multiplexer and High Rate Modem provided by Motorola and will be transmitted over Ku-Band link to Earth,`` Schmidt said.

According to the Microgravity Research Program Office at NASA`s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., ISS crew members will be able to observe experiments in space. That means it will not be necessary to physically return all research to Earth for analysis before running the next experiment in space.

One future area of research on ISS that will benefit from high rate advanced communication enabled by Motorola could help researchers develop new drugs.

An associate director of the Center for Biophysical Sciences and Engineering located at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Dr. Marianna Long said the technology is called structure-based drug design which involves a careful study of the protein structure of some diseases` targets.

The molecules of these proteins in a crystal form take on a high-quality, three-dimensional structure in the near-weightlessness of space that has been giving researchers a much better view of the structure of these molecules.

``We have been growing high-quality crystals for the study of proteins in space since 1985 on 38 different missions. We are now developing technology that will one day enable science experts on Earth to look at these crystals as they are growing in space to increase their knowledge about the structure of the proteins which could lead to the development of new drugs,`` said Long.

The center in Birmingham is one of NASA`s 10 Commercial Space Centers run by the Research Program Office at NASA`s Marshall Space Flight Center.

Motorola`s high data rate communication equipment (Ku-Band) equipped with 12 channels for video and payload data, is to be brought up to the Space Station by the STS-102 crew (Flights 5A.1). That mission is scheduled for February of 2001.

Schmidt concluded, ``Within a year, NASA hopes to fly HDTV cameras on a Space Shuttle to the International Space Station and transmit real time video to Earth.``

Nordrhein-Westfalen erteilt Motorola Zuschlag für Pilotprojekt Aachen


Motorola hat einen Großauftrag in wichtiger geographischer Lage ergattert. Anfang des Jahres 2000 platzierten die Zentralen Polizeitechnischen Dienste (ZPD) des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen eine europaweite Ausschreibung für ein Digitalfunksystem für die Sicherheitsbehörden in der Stadt und im Landkreis Aachen im Amtsblatt der Europäischen Union. Um diesen Auftrag bewarben sich namhafte Hersteller professioneller Mobilfunksysteme in Europa. Nach einem Analyse- und Auswertungsverfahren der ZPD, in Zusammenarbeit mit der RW TH Aachen, wurde jetzt der Auftrag für das Pilotnetz an den Geschäftsbereich Funk der Motorola GmbH in Taunusstein vergeben. Bedingt durch die geographische Lage des ausgewählten Gebietes im Dreiländereck Niederlande, Belgien und Deutschland ist der Auftrag für Europa besonders interessant.

Das neue Digitalfunksystem auf Basis des europäischen TETRAStandards wird ein Gebiet von rund 715 Quadratkilometer abdecken. Stadt und Landkreis Aachen haben dabei beträchtliche gemeinsame Grenzen mit den Niederlanden und Belgien, eine ideale Voraussetzung fü die Erprobung der zukünftigen grenzüberschreitenden Kommunikation unter den Sicherheitsbehörden der Schengen-Staaten. Sowohl Polizeikräfte als auch Feuerwehr, Grenzschutz, Zoll und Rettungswesen werden im operativen Betrieb dieses neue Funknetz erproben.

Das neue digitale Funksystem wird sukzessive in der ersten Hälfte des nächsten Jahres aufgebaut und in Betrieb genommen, Federführung haben die ZPD Düsseldorf für das Land Nordrhein-Westfalen übernommen. Die Projektbegleitung erfolgt durch die RW TH Aachen. Der digitale Standard TETRA (Terrestrial Trunked Radio) wurde mit Mandat der EU vom Standardisierungsinstitut ETSI normiert. TETRA wurde unter anderem entwickelt für die Funkkommunikation von Sicherheitsbehörden und bietet hervorragende Leistungsmerkmale: Abhörsicherheit, offener Kanal, hervorragende Sprachverständlichkeit, Datenübertragung, dynamische Gruppenbildung.

OpenTV startet iTV Plattform in USA Media Group-Kabelnetz
AMSTERDAM (dpa-AFX) - OpenTV will seine Plattform für interaktives Fernsehen "iTV" im kalifornischen Kabelnetz der USA Media Group im ersten Quartal 2001 starten. Wie der Software-Spezialist für interaktives Fernsehen am Donnerstag mitteilte, wird er iTV-Dienste für die Motorola Set-Top-Boxen des USA Media-Netzes entwickeln.

Net2Phone: Allianz mit Motorola und Broadcom

Net2Phone ist mit Motorola und Broadcom in einer Allianz eingetreten. Diese Allianz hat zum Ziel, die Produktpalette aller drei Unternehmen zu erweitern.

So wird Motorola VoIP (Voice over IP)-Dienstleistungen zusammen mit Net2Phone entwickeln. BroadCom hat die VoIP-Lösung von Net2Phone in seine Produktpalette aufgenommen.

So werden alle drei Unternehmen zukünftig erweiterte VoIP-Dienstleistungen an die Kunden anbieten können.

BroadCom ist ein Anbieter und Hersteller von Chips, welche eine schnellere Übertragung von Informationen durch ein Kabel-Netzwerk über Modems oder Set-Top-Boxen ermöglichen. Zu diesen Geräten gehören auch Anwendungen, welche das Telefonieren über das Internet ermöglichen. Der Vorteil von Telefongesprächen über das Internet liegt in der Deregularität des Internets. Diese macht die minütlichen Gebühren günstiger als würde der Kunde das Festnetz zum Telefonieren benutzen.

Motorola geht von starkem 3G-Markt in Asien aus

Motorola, die Nummer zwei auf dem Mobilfunkmarkt, erwartet einen weltweiten Absatzmarkt für 3G Produkte von 200 Mrd. US-Dollar in den nächsten vier Jahren.
Europa wird den größten Markt mit ca. 112 Mrd. US-Dollar generieren, gefolgt von Asien mit 50 Mrd. US-Dollar. Vor allem China werde seinen 3G-Service verstärkt ausbauen, sagte Bo Hedfors, Präsident von Motorola, ohne auf Quellen zu verweisen.

Motorola geht auf Grund seiner starken Marktposition von einem Wachstum im nächsten Jahr von 25 Prozent aus.

Sega produziert Spiele für Motorola

Die japanische Sega Corp. wird Spiele entwickeln, welche in den Mobiltelefonen der nächsten Generation von Motorola eingesetzt werden.
Die Allianz wird es ermöglichen, eine Auswahl von Sega-Videospielen auf Motorola-Mobiltelefonen zu spielen. Es ist gleichzeitig das erste Mal, dass eine japanische Firma Videospiele für den Einsatz auf diesen Geräten entwickelt.

Motorola wird seine neuen Produkte im ersten Quartal 2001 auf den Markt bringen, auf den ersten werden bereits Sega-Spiele vorinstalliert sein.

Das Investmenthaus SG Cowen bekräftigt seine "Buy"-Einstufung für Aktien von Motorola (Ticker: MOT). Das 12-Monats-Kursziel veranschlagen die Analysten mit 41 Dollar. Kurs am 4. Dezember: 18 3/8 Dollar.

Ich bin jetzt seit Juli in MOT drin und der Moment ist (leider erst jetzt) gekommen - Ich scheiße einen großen, saftigen Haufen auf (nicht die Firma) die Aktie MOT!!!
Scheiß auf alle guten news - bei der nächsten Gelegenheit bin ich draußen (also in ungefähr 2 bis 3 Jahren.......).
