      -Unternehmen will neue Märkte erschließen
      -Interessante Cooperationen

      GigaMedia eyes China expansion

HONG KONG (CBS.MW) -- Until recently, Raymond Chang was a little known figure outside Taiwan, where he is head of the country`s biggest cable TV and Internet company GigaMedia (GIGM: news, msgs) .
But he recently made headlines when he dropped prospective partner Pacific Century CyberWorks (PCW: news, msgs) of Hong Kong in favor of a union with Star TV, the pan-Asian satellite arm of Australia`s News Corp. (NWS: news, msgs) . The move was widely seen as a bold move for Chang, 30, who conceived the idea behind GigaMedia while studying for a doctorate at Harvard University.
In an interview with CBS.MarketWatch.com, Chang talked about the company`s business, recent financials, and his recent agreement with News Corp.
      A.
Chang: GigaMedia is the leading broadband Internet content and access and service provider in Taiwan. Our position is pretty unique in that we have the largest broadband coverage in Taiwan with access to about 70 percent of all households, or 3.8 million households. Also, we have very interesting broadband content targeting Chinese-speaking people outside Taiwan as well.
      A.
Initially, we have the opportunity to capture significant access revenue, which is a premium over narrowband. On top of that, we also have the opportunity to capture other value-added services such as content subscription, advertising and commerce revenue. Already we`re seeing our business model being validated by our subscribers, content partners and advertisers. This year in the third quarter, we generated about 20 percent of total revenue from the content business. We were also able to maintain a low subscriber churn rate of 5 percent, versus the industry average of 15 to 20 percent for most ISPs. The two-prong formula ensures that we have diversified revenue and can sustain our business model beyond the point where access is commoditized.
      A.
Chang: We expect that by the second half of 2002. But we`ve achieved all major milestones we promised in the beginning of this year. In terms of subscriber base, originally we had a 67,000 year-end target, but we increased that to 75,000, so that`s a 12 percent increase since the beginning of the year. In the third quarter, we saw a 30 percent growth in revenue but managed to narrow losses by another 6 percent or so. Our balance sheet is also very strong. We also have over $220 million in cash.
      A.
Chang: We recently finished a technical trial delivering broadband content in Singapore. Deployment was based on an advanced broadband content caching, management and distribution technology developed by GigaMedia. We chose Singapore because it`s got one of the most sophisticated infrastructures in Asia. Also, they use simplified Chinese characters, which is key because we intend to localize our content using simplified Chinese characters and eventually bring that to mainland China, our biggest potential market.
      A.
Basically, our overseas strategy is to go after Chinese speaking markets including Singapore, Hong Kong and mainland China. We`re also interested in North America, but that`s our secondary target.
      A.
Chang: We don`t face restrictions in China, as we are a Singapore company and listed on Nasdaq. And I think once China joins the WTO it should make the process even easier. At first we`ll focus on seeking strategic partners in China, rather than trying to build the business through acquisitions. Now we`re mainly looking for infrastructure owners, since we have the content but we need someone to provide the pipes. We`re also looking for local media companies, because content needs to be localized.
      A.
We`re very interested in China, of course. Initially we`ll try to bring content to China, and then we`ll try to get into infrastructure. But we`ll focus on content first, because it`s a more scalable and portable part of our business. If you look at traditional media, Taiwan has played a Hollywood role for Chinese speaking audiences, and we hope to explore that by linking up with the local content producers and help them distribute their content beyond Taiwan.
      A.
Chang: We formed this venture with Star TV to create and operate a digital interactive TV platform for the Taiwan market. The JV will be 50-50 owned and operated as an independent company with its own management team. It will leverage News Corp.`s global and local content and technology, plus GigaMedia`s broadband Internet services and coverage.
      A.
This venture is meant to differentiate us from competitors. We expect it to be the default service provider to over a million cable subscribers once interactive services get launched, and it`ll also be available to all cable subscribers in Taiwan, where cable penetration rate is 80 percent. Interactive TV is part of our multi-platform strategy. One day, we believe that subscribers will access the net from TVs and game consoles, devices that represent different segments of the market. Younger people will use game consoles, while the older generation will use TV sets.
      A.
Chang: Both the Koos group [GigaMedia`s principal shareholder] and Star TV will contribute content to make the service attractive. Star TV will also provide operational expertise and technology accumulated from BskyB in the U.K. Lastly, Star will also provide the financing to help accelerate the two-way upgrade and digitization of networks of our principal cable partners island-wide, representing about 2.2 million homes.
Chang: We didn`t agree on the business model. It was difficult for us to come to a consensus. Furthermore, we`ve positioned the company as a platform provider and at this time our strategy is to stay away from the content origination business, which is more capital intensive. There`s always a possibility we will work with them in the future. We won`t rule it out.

GigaMedia expects to break even in 2002

      By Michael Kramer

TAIPEI, Nov 15 (Reuters) - Taiwan Internet media firm GigaMedia Ltd said on Wednesday it expected to break even by the second half of 2002.

Nasdaq-listed Giga posted an unaudited net loss of US$10.92 million for the third quarter of 2000 on Tuesday, down from US$11.62 million in the second quarter but up from US$4.26 million in the same period last year.

``We estimate that we will reach profit-loss break even point by the second half of 2002,`` said Raymond Chan, Giga`s chief executive officer.

``You can see that our losses are slowly declining,`` he told a news conference.

The bulk of Giga`s revenues, which were US$3.75 million in the third quarter, continued to come from providing high-speed Internet access through cable television lines.

Access income grew nearly 50 percent from last quarter to US$1.610 million.

Giga`s high-profile investments in content paid off with sharp gains in advertising revenue at its Gigigaga.com website, rising more than 83 percent on the quarter to US$249,369.

Chan said the gains came from launching interactive advertising that took advantage of Giga`s high-speed data transmission. The more sophisticated advertisments commanded much higher margins than traditional banner ads.

``We will continue to develop the content side, not just locally in Taiwan, but in the entire global Chinese-speaking market,`` he said.

      EYEING MORE INVESTMENT

Giga`s boldest recent moves have been on developing content. It agreed to set up a joint venture with News Corp`s (Australia:NCP.AX - news) Star TV unit to develop interactive television, and forged an alliance with Hong Kong`s Sega.com to provide online gaming.

Chan said Giga had about US$250 million in cash. Some US$150 million was slated for operating expenses and another US$50 million for the News Corp venture, leaving a US$50 million war chest for new investments.

He said Giga was eyeing domestic or overseas Internet service providers, media companies, or technology partners for acquisition or investment.

``To tell you the truth, I have 20-30 cases on my desk that I am looking at right now,`` Chan said, adding that he hoped to announce news about a partnership with a mainland China network infrastructure company in the near future.

He said partnerships with Sega.com and News Corp were aimed at creating new customers for Giga who would get broadband access not just through personal computers but also via interactive television and game consoles.

He said these potential new customers were not figured into Giga`s estimate of reaching break-even point in 2002, as the projects were only in their infancy and would not begin operations until next year.

``Our cooperation with Star TV and Sega should help us reach the target more quickly, but business has not started, so it should not have too much effect -- maybe one quarter faster,`` he said.

On Tuesday, Giga shares gained US$0-7/16, or 9.33 percent, to close at US$5-1/8, outperforming the Nasdaq`s 5.78 percent rise.

Unternehmensprofil (hatte ich vor lauter schreck vergessen):

GigaMedia Limited is a provider of broadband Internet access services through the cable television infrastructure in Taiwan. The Company also provides Internet content services through its Web site. Unlike traditional telco ISPs, GigaMedia delivers its services via cable network connecting into its advanced broadband network infrastructure. High-speed cable modem connects users from home or from work to the Internet at speeds hundreds of times faster than traditional dial-up services. This speed enables a full range of multimedia experiences, including rich graphics, CD-quality audio, real-time video, and TV-quality teleconferencing.
