TFB Says Another Two Years Needed Before Ready to Compete

WHILE many credit rating agencies have been warning recently that Thai-owned banks continue to live in denial over the problems the industry is facing, Bantoon Lumsum, president of Thai Farmers Bank (TFB), admitted yesterday that TFB does not expect to be able to compete with international banks for at least another two years.

"I believe it will take another two years of concentrating on non-performing loans [NPLs] and adjustments to the bank`s operations before we can begin to compete," said Bantoon.

He said it will be difficult to reduce the current level of NPLs much further because the economic environment is seen to be flat, neither deteriorating nor improving noticeably. He said the NPL situation depends on the new government`s ability to stimulate economic activity.

"I don`t think the bank`s bottom line will increase, because competition from foreign banks is greater, adding to the cost of our operations, while lending growth has stagnated," said Bantoon.

He said he expected competition will force interest rate spreads in some healthy segments of the lending sector to narrow next year as a result of the stiffer competition, particularly home loans.

"Income will not improve because we can`t increase the lending base and we will be carrying higher costs related to the restructuring of our business," said Bantoon.

He forecast that business re-engineering will continue to improve the quality of TFB`s services, particularly in the upgrading of branch operations and in increasing the effectiveness of personal banking.

"I think in another two years we will be all set and ready to meet competition from anywhere in the world and offer the highest standards of banking. Thai banks must also compete with foreign banks who are gaining a larger market share and taking away our customers. While we re-engineer, we will also continue to compete."

der bank wuerd ich den pannemann des jahres zukommen lassen
wenn bank naja thaidanu oder siamcom.bank(freundlich)
aber das beste ist garnicht zu investieren in banken
nach kaufm. gesetzen im westen sind die alle schon laengst pleite,aber man kann ja nicht alle thaibanken zumachen
tfb als anlage zum vererben ja,denn in 20 jahren werden sie es eventl. packen aber 2jahre???????????????????????

ach die sollten mal ihr personal schulen,denn was die koennen kann jede putze von der strasse in thailand auch
vergesst die naechsten kapitalerhoehungen nicht,das geld geht dann wieder in alle richtungen ohne zu helfen bis zur naechstenkapitalerhoehung
