Motorola Licenses ACCESS` Compact NetFront Internet Browser for Wireless Devices and Semiconductor Solutions
Wireless Browser Proven in i-mode Phones Added to Motorola Portfolio
TOKYO & LIBERTYVILLE, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 11, 2000-- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT <http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=mot&d=t> - news </n/m/mot.html>;) and ACCESS Co., Ltd have signed a comprehensive licensing agreement for ACCESS` Compact NetFront, NetFront Internet browser and related technologies for use in wireless communication and information devices, such as cellular phones and pagers. Through this agreement, ACCESS` Compact HTML browsing technology is added to Motorola`s expanding portfolio of wireless Internet technologies. The Compact HTML browsing technology is a key feature of the Compact NetFront browser, and is an important component in the success of NTT DoCoMo`s i-mode phones.
``We are pleased to add the world`s most successful wireless browser technology from ACCESS to Motorola`s competitive portfolio,`` said Steve Bunch, vice president Technical Staff and director of Software Architecture and Systems Engineering, Personal Communications Sector, Motorola. ``By leveraging the open Compact HTML standard, Motorola will be able to better serve developer and device user`s needs, and enable wireless operators targeting the wireless Internet to quickly deploy services.``
``We are very excited about the opportunity to work closely with Motorola, a clear leader in innovative wireless communications and semiconductor devices,`` stated Toru Arakawa, founder and CEO of ACCESS. ``The next few years will be very exciting as new wireless devices will bring us Internet access in many new ways. We look forward to teaming with Motorola to jointly develop many innovative new wireless Internet access technologies.``
      From Handsets to Semiconductors
Motorola`s Semiconductor Products Sector (SPS) plans to bundle the NetFront/Compact NetFront software products with their DigitalDNA(TM) solutions, including the M-CORE(TM), ARM®, PowerPC(TM), and ColdFire® processor families and the popular Dragonball(TM) multi-purpose integrated processor. ``By adding ACCESS` i-mode technology to its portfolio, SPS is now in a unique position to supply the needs of the world`s most advanced wireless Internet device manufacturers,`` said Anne-Marie Larkin, vice president and director, Wireless Software Applications and Services, Semiconductor Products Sector, Motorola. ``The NetFront and Compact NetFront browser products will enable Motorola to serve our customers needs well in both wireless and other embedded markets.``

ACCESS` Compact NetFront micro browser is the industry`s first and most popular micro browser based on the Compact HTML standard, which has been proven in more than 10 million of NTT DoCoMo`s i-mode phones in Japan. Designed from scratch for resource-constrained environments and requiring just 300 KB ROM and 150 KB RAM, the Compact NetFront browser supports almost all major functions in HTML 4.0.
ACCESS has been a leader in establishing standards for micro browsers. ACCESS led the effort to propose the Compact HTML standard to the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). ACCESS has been and will continue to be an active participant in the W3C mobile working group to standardize xHTML Basic, the next-generation mark-up language for mobile/wireless devices. ACCESS currently is developing the next generation of Compact NetFront to support the xHTML Basic standard, IPv6 featured wireless TCP/IP, in addition to the next generation version of the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) specification standard.
      The NetFront Embedded Internet Browser
Motorola also licensed ACCESS` standard NetFront browser, a compact yet powerful embedded Internet browser that is ideal for Internet TVs, personal digital assistants (PDAs), set-top boxes, car navigation systems, video game consoles and Internet kiosks. NetFront`s browser kernel is less than 270 KB of code and fits in one megabyte of ROM and 2 megabytes of RAM. It supports the full HTML 3.2 specification and selected portions of HTML 4.0. It supports frames, JavaScript, cookies, web printing and multilingual capabilities. Optional additional modules include Internet mail, Japanese language input kits, Secure Socket Layer (SSL) capabilities, Java Virtual Machine, animation plug-ins and more.

      Hi Motorolans,

In meinem bescheidenen Falle warens heute 1250 €.

      good luck motorola

U.S. Army Awards Motorola $14.5 Million Intelligence & Electronic Warfare Training Contract
Motorola`s Leading Developments in Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) Spearheads Technology
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 12, 2000-- Motorola (NYSE: MOT - news) Tuesday announced the U.S. Army has awarded it the first Intelligence and Electronic Warfare Tactical Proficiency Trainer (IEWTPT) production contract for $14.5 million.

The total value of the contract with all options and quantities exercised is $30 million over eight years.

Motorola`s technology will enable the U.S. Army to conduct Intelligence and Electronic Warfare (IEW) battle command, tactical proficiency and sustainment training. The IEWTPT simulates operations of key U.S. Army IEW collection assets.

It also stimulates actual ground stations with intelligence and sensor data, such as the Army Common Ground Station, Tactical Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (TUAV), Tactical Control System (TCS), and Tactical Exploitation System (TES).(a)

IEWTPT complements the Motorola prototype Combat Synthetic Training Assessment Range (CSTAR) battle command trainer by enhancing and subsequently extending existing CSTAR capabilities. This will impact training at military sites like the National Training Center at Ft. Irwin, Calif., where live training is conducted and the simulation training site located at Ft. Hood, Texas.

IEWTPT will also field new training capabilities at other sites including the Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) at Ft. Polk, La. and the training center at Ft. Huachuca, Ariz.

``Motorola is a leader in integrating operational C4ISR systems to help the military achieve information dominance. It is only natural that we extend our expertise toward developing and fielding associated simulation technology,`` said Mark Fried, corporate vice president and general manager of Motorola Integrated Information Systems Group.

``We have a long-term interest and the unique competencies to help the military accomplish its `train as they fight` objective.``

Motorola currently provides the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) with a wide range of C4ISR systems.

The successful performance of these systems during real world encounters and training situations adds emphasis to Motorola`s prime contractor role with multiple military customers including the Common Ground Stations (CGS), Joint Services Workstations (JSWS), Tactical Operations Centers (TOCs) and Tactical Airspace Integration Systems (TAISs).

Motorola Licenses Font Fusion from Bitstream
Motorola to Integrate Font Fusion in Its High-End Entertainment Devices Worldwide
      CAMBRIDGE, Mass. & AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 12, 2000--

Bitstream Inc. (NASDAQ: BITS - news) and Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT - news) announced today that they have entered into a long-term, global agreement to license Font Fusion(TM), Bitstream`s next generation font rasterizing engine, and to license Bitstream`s T2K font engine. This new agreement enables Motorola to offer additional interactive solutions and cost-effective advanced multimedia set-top box solutions to its worldwide customer base.

Font Fusion is the convergence of Bitstream`s T2K® and TrueDoc® technology in an advanced, object-oriented architecture. Motorola expects to incorporate T2K and Font Fusion in its controllers for set-top boxes and high-end entertainment devices. Font Fusion is designed to allow Motorola to render high-quality text in browsers, electronic programming guides, and other interactive software.

Font Fusion provides developers with full font fidelity and high-quality typographic output at any resolution on any device, while maintaining the integrity of the original character shapes. In addition, Font Fusion performs well in memory-constrained environments. For example, a complete traditional Chinese TrueType font with over 13,500 characters can occupy as much as 8MB. With Font Fusion, the same characters occupy less than 0.5MB, representing considerable savings in set-top box memory costs.

Font Fusion is designed for operating systems, software applications, Web applications, low-resolution screen devices, multimedia servers, high-definition television screens (HDTVs), set-top boxes, continuous tone printers, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and other embedded systems and Internet and wireless appliances.

``Motorola is a worldwide leader in embedded electronic solutions,`` said Anna Chagnon, president of Bitstream. ``Font Fusion offers Motorola a high-quality, fast font engine that fits in a small footprint. This is very important in devices like set-top boxes, digital TVs, and Internet appliances, where memory and processing power are at a premium. Font Fusion is perfect for entertainment systems that combine both the Internet and television in an interactive environment. We are very pleased that Motorola chose Font Fusion for its font rendering engine.``

``We selected Bitstream`s Font Fusion and T2K font engine to provide an elegant and efficient font rendering solution through Motorola`s Streamaster® multimedia systems,`` said Art Lancaster, chief of staff for Motorola`s Multimedia Systems Division. ``These technologies enable us to better support the rapidly growing number of interactive, broadband services with Streamaster that will revolutionize in-home entertainment.``

About Bitstream, the Internet Font Technology Company

Bitstream Inc. (Nasdaq:BITS - news) is the leading developer of font technology, digital fonts, and custom font designs for a wide variety of markets. Setting the standard for excellence in font technology, Bitstream holds numerous key patents that cover the creation of portable fonts for the Internet. Bitstream licenses its award-winning TrueDoc®, WebFont(TM), and Font Fusion(TM) technologies to Web and application developers, and to manufacturers of Internet appliances, wireless devices, set-top boxes, embedded systems, printers, and personal digital assistants

      @fesdu !

      @shearer !

      Iridium gibt erste Perspektiven bekannt

Bioarrays, and in particular CodeLink(TM) technology, significantly reduce bottlenecks in the research process and pave the way to highly accurate and flexible tools to perform genetic research. Motorola`s CodeLink(TM) system is comprised of bioarrays, instrumentation, reagents and software. It is expected to be capable of simultaneously monitoring the activity of thousands of genes in a given tissue sample. Researchers using the technology will benefit from Motorola`s technological and systems expertise as it is applied to genomics research, bridging the gap between research and daily clinical use.
``Important collaborations like this are an integral part of Motorola`s strategy to broadly place our CodeLink(TM) system in the laboratories of pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and academic researchers,`` said Nicholas Naclerio, vice president and general manager of Motorola`s Biochip Systems business unit. ``We are very pleased that we are able to partner with a premier research institution such as the Mayo Clinic. Our approach is to work with those institutions and companies that will enhance Motorola`s technology development; thus Motorola will continue to deliver very high quality products for its customers.``
Motorola Inc. (NYSE: MOT <http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=mot&d=t> - news </n/m/mot.html>;) is a global leader in providing integrated communications solutions and embedded electronic solutions. Sales in 1999 were $33.1 billion. For more information, visit Motorola at <http://www.motorola.com/biochipsystems> .

      The Bull Argument

By Chris Rugaber <http://www.fool.com/About/staff/chrisr.htm> (TMF Chris)
As those following the mobile phone business know, this may not be the best time to write a bull argument for Motorola (NYSE: MOT) <http://quote.fool.com/uberdata.asp?symbols=MOT>. After all, isn`t this the company that just issued its second earnings warning of the quarter last week? Haven`t the shares of this company fallen some 70% so far this year?

Well, yes. But, the bearish headlines have gotten carried away. Like its competitor Ericsson (Nasdaq: ERICY) <http://quote.fool.com/uberdata.asp?symbols=ERICY>, Motorola is largely judged by the success (or lack thereof) of its mobile phone business, even though that division only accounts for about a third of revenues. Nevertheless, there are plenty of other things going on at the company, such as its rapidly growing networking and broadband equipment divisions.

In addition, Motorola is taking the right steps to increase the profitability of its Personal Communications Segment (as the mobile phone division is called). As a result, while things may look difficult now, a better future is not that hard to discern.

What`s more, all this comes at a decent price: Motorola`s shares are currently valued much more cheaply than Ericsson`s and those of other wireless equipment companies.

      Last week`s earnings warning
Before we get to all that, let`s quickly address last week`s earnings warning. Certainly, the numbers weren`t good: Revenue for the fourth quarter of this year is now projected to come in at $10 billion, rather than $10.5 billion, while earnings per share (EPS) will be about $0.15, rather than $0.27.

However, as Motorola made clear in a conference call <http://www.corporate-ir.net/ireye/ir_site.zhtml?ticker=MOT&s… these numbers were the result of temporary factors affecting the personal communications and semiconductor businesses. In the personal communications division, cost-cutting measures are simply taking longer than expected. The semiconductor business has slowed because of inventory buildup among customers -- the same problem experienced by other chipmakers such as Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) <http://quote.fool.com/uberdata.asp?symbols=INTC> and National Semiconductor (NYSE: NSM) <http://quote.fool.com/uberdata.asp?symbols=NSM>. The company expects both of these problems to be resolved by the middle of next year.

So, what cost-cutting measures is the company referring to? Let`s take a look.

      Cost cutting and streamlining
To begin with, Motorola is outsourcing more of its manufacturing, as many other high-tech equipment companies have done, to cut costs and increase profitability. Last May, the company signed an agreement with electronic manufacturing services (EMS) provider Flextronics (Nasdaq: FLEX) <http://quote.fool.com/uberdata.asp?symbols=FLEX> to outsource $30 billion of manufacturing over the next five years. In addition, the company contracted out another $1 billion of manufacturing over three years to Celestica (NYSE: CLS) <http://quote.fool.com/uberdata.asp?symbols=CLS> last week. Overall, the company plans to outsource 50% of its manufacturing by next year.

In addition, until recently Motorola used more than 10 different platforms for its various handset models, requiring a wide range of components. The company learned its lesson, however, and began consolidating its various platforms earlier this year. This should enable Motorola to buy more parts from fewer suppliers and achieve some economies of scale.

This last measure, in particular, will take time, as the company works off accumulated inventories. Both initiatives should yield significant cost savings, however.

      New phones
As I argued in a news article <http://www.fool.com/news/2000/mot001206.htm> last week, cost cuts may not be enough. The company does need to increase its mobile phone sales.

I may not have given the company enough credit, though. Last week Motorola introduced eight new products <http://www.corporate-ir.net/ireye/ir_site.zhtml?ticker=MOT&s… at a trade show, including a second Bluetooth-enabled phone (the company`s first Bluetooth phone was one of the first commercially available in the world). Bluetooth <http://www.fool.com/news/2000/wirelesslingo000831.htm> is a short-range wireless technology that enables electronic devices to connect and communicate. With Motorola`s Bluetooth phone, for example, you could keep your mobile phone in your pocket and carry on a conversation using a wireless headset.

In addition, the company`s new, colorful <http://commerce.motorola.com/consumer/QWhtml/v2397.html> V-Series phones include an Internet browser and address book, as well as short-messaging service (SMS) capability. SMS has proved wildly popular in Europe. These new products demonstrate that innovation is alive and well at Motorola.

      Other high-growth areas
As I indicated earlier, there`s a lot more to Motorola than mobile phones. The company`s network systems segment -- now referred to as the "Global Telecom Solutions Segment" -- is building next-generation wireless systems around the world, and increasing sales and profits smartly as a result. For example, during the third quarter the company was selected to participate in trials of NTT DoCoMo`s 3G network. Sales for the division were up 23% in the third quarter, and operating profits jumped 33%.

In addition, thanks to the company`s purchase of General Instrument earlier this year, Motorola`s Broadband Communications Segment is growing by leaps and bounds. The division, which sells digital set-top boxes and cable modems, grew revenue 47% in the third quarter this year, and doubled operating profits.

And all at a great price, too!
Finally, there`s the company`s valuation, which reflects most of the short-term doubts surrounding the company.

Currently, Motorola`s estimated EPS for 2001 is $1.15, though the company indicated it would probably reduce guidance for next year at the end of this quarter. Even if the company`s earnings for 2001 end up as low as $0.85 per share, as one analyst guesstimated, last Friday`s closing price of $19.25 is only 22.5x that estimate. Meanwhile, Ericsson, which is in worse shape than Motorola in my opinion <http://www.fool.com/duelingfools/2000/duelingfools00110102.h… trades at 39x estimated year 2001 earnings, as of Friday.

As a result, Motorola should pique the interest of an investor with a long-term horizon. There`s no guarantee that the company`s ongoing restructuring will succeed. But if it does, it may be a long time before the company`s shares are this low again.

Motorola Acquires Additional Stake in CME Telemetrix
-- US electronics giant to invest additional US $3.5 million in CME --
WATERLOO, ON, Dec. 13 /CNW/ - CME Telemetrix (CDNX: YME <http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=yme.v&d=t> - news </n/ca/y/yme.html>;), a leading-edge developer of near-infrared instruments, today announced that Motorola, Inc. has elected to exercise its option to invest an additional US$1.5 million in the common shares of CME at a price of CDN$5.985 per share by January 5, 2001. In addition, Motorola has agreed to invest another US$2 million not later than January 23, 2001 at a price of CDN$5.985 per common share. The purchase price for common shares of CME to be purchased by Motorola is subject to the approval of the CDNX. In total, Motorola`s ownership in CME will climb to 1,312,634 shares or 14.9% of outstanding shares subsequent to Motorola`s additional investment.
"We are extremely pleased to have this additional very significant endorsement from a world technology leader such as Motorola, one which clearly reflects the capabilities of our people and technology," said CME Telemetrix President and CEO Duncan J. MacIntyre. "Our agreement with Motorola has greatly accelerated the development of our lead product, the world`s first truly non-invasive glucose-monitoring device. We plan to make an announcement pertaining to the status of this device, specifically on our progress in achieving an SEP of at least 1 mmol, in the near future."
As part of an Investment Agreement and a Technology Agreement both dated May 15, 2000, CME had granted to Motorola an option to purchase 316,756 common shares of CME at CDN$7.00 per share. The option, if exercised, would also have required Motorola to pay CME prepaid royalties, payable in instalments over the next two years, and expenses related to clinical trials estimated to cost US$1 million. Under terms of the May 15, 2000 Agreements, the royalty rate payable by Motorola to CME on net revenue would be reduced from 10% to 7% upon exercise of this option. Motorola and CME have agreed to amend certain terms of the May 15, 2000 Agreements.
Under terms of the revised transaction, which terms are subject to the approval of the CDNX, CME has waived its right to receive prepaid royalties and clinical trial expenses from Motorola. Upon completion of a commercial product, Motorola will pay to CME a royalty equal to 7% of Motorola`s net revenue from the product. Also, the warrant to purchase 316,756 common shares at CDN$7.00 will be amended to permit the purchase of 381,554 common shares of CME (US$1.5 million value) at CDN$5.985 per share and Motorola will fully exercise this amended warrant by January 5, 2001. Motorola will also subscribe for an additional 508,739 common shares of CME (US$2.0 million value) at CDN$5.985 per share to be closed not later than January 23, 2001. In addition, the warrant granted to Motorola on May 15, 2000 to purchase 446,226 shares at CDN$7.00 per share expiring May 15, 2003, will be amended to give Motorola the right to purchase 521,902 shares at CDN$5.985 per share (calculated as the average closing price of CME common shares for the ten trading days ending December 7, 2000) and will still expire on May 15, 2003.
Kristin Hayes, Director of Motorola`s new Life Sciences Company, and an observer on the CME board of directors, expressed her pleasure with the progress achieved by CME over the past year, "CME has achieved great progress since our May 15, 2000 agreement and continues to impress us with their talented workforce and expertise in this field of optics and electronics. They clearly have a commitment to excellence".
CME`s GlucoNIR device is intended to measure blood glucose non-invasively using a spectrophotometer, covering a broad band of light including the near infrared ("NIR") region, optically coupled to a specially designed finger receptor. By exposing a finger to NIR light the GlucoNIR device is designed to use absorbance to predict the blood glucose concentration.

Motorola Unveils a New Handset--and Its China Mobile Strategy

On December 3, at the opening of the International Telecommunication Union`s (ITU`s) Telecom Asia 2000 Conference in Hong Kong, Motorola kick-started the launch of a high-end new handset specifically targeting the China market. The company unveiled its Accompli A6288 model, which includes a kJava overlay to facilitate improved content for wireless application protocol (WAP) services, and will be compatible with general packet radio service (GPRS) technology. Along with the upcoming TimePoint handset, A6288 will become the first commercial GPRS handset for mobile users in China.

For Motorola, China is a uniquely challenging market as 126 models are currently available to consumers--more than any other market in the world. With 70 million mobile subscribers and a revenue scale of $10 billion, the Chinese handset market is the second-largest one for Motorola, contributing to 17% of its global sales and 20% of its total production. Eyeing the fledging mobile Internet services in China, Motorola will maintain its strategy of focusing on four distinct customer groups: technology enthusiasts, time managers, status seekers, and personal connectors. Such strategies have enabled the firm to hold 32% of the market last year, and might continue to work for Motorola in its drive to capture mobile Internet users in the future.

Though WAP services have hit the wall in China as elsewhere in the world throughout 2000, the Yankee Group still believes mobile Internet services will stand firm and be booming in China during the next few years with GPRS coming into play and current-version WAP being upgraded. There will be 75 million mobile phone subscribers and 22 million Internet users in China as of year-end 2000, but they present only 5.5% and 1.6% of the population, respectively; pointing to a huge growth potential for mobile Internet services as the penetrations of both mobile services and the Internet continue to grow, as well the demand for functional Internet-enabled handsets like Accompli A6288. As the largest handset supplier in China, Motorola has taken an important step to secure ground zero in the fierce competition for the country`s promising mobile Internet market; and the company might prove that it can be as successful as it has been in the past.

Motorola May Need to Change to Win Back Investors
      By Yukari Iwatani
CHICAGO (Reuters) - With its shares tumbling to an eight-year low after its second consecutive earnings warning, semiconductor and mobile phone maker Motorola Inc. (NYSE:MOT <http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=mot&d=t> - news <" target="_blank" rel="nofollow ugc noopener">http://biz.yahoo.com/n/m/mot.html>;) may need to take another series of drastic measures to satisfy investors impatient with its performance.
``There is no confidence on the (Wall) Street that anybody inside the company knows what the heck is going on,`` Ed Snyder, analyst with Chase H&Q, said.
``In fact, I don`t even mention Motorola right now because people get mad. They don`t just laugh; they get mad,`` he said.
When Motorola was in trouble two years ago, Chief Executive Christopher Galvin overhauled the company by trimming costs to regain investor confidence.
In order to win back investors this time, Motorola, the world`s second-largest mobile phone maker, must be able to handle competition from rival Nokia Oyj Abp (NYSE:NOK <http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=nok&d=t> - news <" target="_blank" rel="nofollow ugc noopener">http://biz.yahoo.com/n/n/nok.html>;) (NOK1V.HE) of Finland and cut costs more effectively, analysts said.
They also suggested that Motorola reevaluate its semiconductor business, market itself to analysts, and look for new leadership for its upper ranks.
Motorola surprised investors last week by slashing its fourth-quarter profit projections by more than 40 percent, citing a slowing semiconductor market and delays in cost-cutting in wireless phone production. This was the second time the company had cut fourth-quarter estimates.
As of Tuesday, Motorola`s market capitalization was only $47.24 billion. Its chief telecom competitors Nokia, the world`s largest mobile phone maker, and Sweden`s Telefon AB L.M. Ericsson (LMEb.ST) (NasdaqNM:ERICY <http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=ericy&d=t> - news <," target="_blank" rel="nofollow ugc noopener">http://biz.yahoo.com/n/e/ericy.html>;), the world`s No. 3 mobile phone maker, had market capitalizations of $234.5 billion and $104.5 billion respectively.
Shares of Motorola on Wednesday closed off about 3 percent, or 5/8, at $20-1/8 on the New York Stock Exchange (news <http://rd.yahoo.com/DailyNews/manual/*http://search.news.yah… - web sites <." target="_blank" rel="nofollow ugc noopener">http://rd.yahoo.com/DailyNews/manual/*http://search.yahoo.com/bin/search?p=York%20Stock%20Exchange>;). Its year-high was $61-8/16.
      Some Call For Spinoffs
Some analysts consider Motorola to be worse off than Ericsson, which has been battered by huge losses from its handset unit, and pressure is mounting for Motorola to make some changes.
``Certainly you`ve got to have some investors that are impatient with the company and where they are right now -- especially where the stock is at,`` said Brian Modoff, analyst with Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown.
According to some analysts, Motorola should reexamine its businesses and spin some of them off. Motorola`s diverse operations makes the company vulnerable to almost every swing in the technology and telecommunications industry. That turns off some potential investors.
``It`s not a company that is the best in any of the sectors in which they operate, so they would have to show me that they`re really focusing on something (before I would buy it),`` said Stephen Gauthier, fund manager for the National Bank Global Technologies Fund, which owns Nokia and Ericsson stock.
Gauthier as well as other analysts and investors suggest that Motorola should sell or spin off its semiconductor business, which is often hurt by volatile demand cycles.
Others say Motorola may have to take its brand campaign to analysts and investors, not just to consumers. In recent months, Motorola has launched a new consumer marketing plan to streamline its marketing and branding message.
``If Motorola came out and said ``We are a mobile wireless company,`` you can reposition yourself so it`s easier for investors to get their arms around the story,`` Snyder said.
Nokia and Ericsson have done just that. Investors see Nokia as a mobile handset firm, although it also makes network equipment and multimedia terminals. Investors identify Ericsson with network equipment, although it also makes mobile handsets.
      Pressuring For Change
When asked to comment, Motorola reiterated President and Chief Operating Officer Robert Growney`s comment in the press release it issued last week warning of the lower profits.
In it, Growney said, ``We continue to believe that tremendous long-term opportunity exists at three levels of the value chain -- embedded chips, embedded electronic systems and end-to-end integrated communication solutions -- for wireless, broadband and Internet markets. This is the core of our strategic focus.``
Some analysts and investors, however, are pressuring for even greater change, including the possibility of replacing Galvin. ``I suspect there are going to be discussions about it. I can`t imagine it not coming up,`` Snyder said.
One analyst said he would like to see a change in senior management, but he as well as others, including Snyder, doubted that Galvin would be replaced.
Motorola, a company founded by Galvin`s grandfather Paul, would find it difficult to oust Galvin given his family ties. Galvin`s father Robert, who previously served as Motorola`s chief executive, also sits on the board.
Still, analysts hope that Motorola will continue to bring in new senior executives to strengthen its management. Most recently, Motorola appointed Mike Zafirovski, a former executive with General Electric Co. (NYSE:GE <http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=ge&d=t> - news <," target="_blank" rel="nofollow ugc noopener">http://biz.yahoo.com/n/g/ge.html>;), to head its personal communications sector, which makes the mobile phones.
Snyder raised the possibility that Motorola may try to find a compelling replacement for Merle Gilmore, who resigned from his position as president of the Communications Enterprise division in October.
The Communications Enterprise unit, one of three main units at Motorola, includes the personal communications sector and is responsible for 70 percent of Motorola`s business.

      Hi Motorolans,

      CLST pops on MOT deal
--3:06 pm - By Chris Kraeuter

CellStar said it will sell Motorola’s wireless phones and accessories to carriers and dealers through the United States. According to a CellStar statement, the deal could generate in excess of $325 million in revenue for CellStar, essentially doubling sales of Motorola’s products for 2000. CellStar shares are popping, up 22 cents, or 11 percent, to $1.94 on volume of 550,000 shares

      @shearer

      börsenratte :D::D::D:

      Set-Top-Boxen greifen TV-Sender an
$ in Nordamerika umfassen soll.
AT&T </ws/stockinformer/main.php?woid=19311>.
