NEW YORK, Jan 2 (Reuters) - Leading microprocessor maker Intel Corp. <INTC.O> said on Tuesday it is pushing into the consumer retail market with a portable digital audio player in an effort to offset slow sales growth in its core business.

Santa Clara, Calif.-based Intel said the Pocket Concert audio player would feature up to four hours of music programming capability and 128 megabytes of memory for storing digital audio files.

Intel is hoping the audio players will give it a sales boost at a time when personal computer makers -- the main consumers of its chips -- are experiencing a big falloff in demand. Whether the foray into consumer devices will successfully offset PC microprocessor softness is a guessing game at this point, analysts said.

"If they`re extremely successful, you could see strong top-line growth but bottom-line growth is very challenging from those kinds of devices," Wit SoundView analyst Scott Randall said.

It is also possible that the move will dilute the Intel brand, since the company has done so much advertising and promotion relative to computer processing, analyst Jack Geraghty of Gerard Klauer Mattison said.

Intel says the new products will enhance the brand because most of them utilize the PC and extend its functions. It already has digital cameras and wireless PC peripheral devices on the market.

Other companies have kept their tech-savvy images intact while entering other businesses in the past. Texas Instruments Inc. <TXN.N>, for example, does a fine job selling both cheap calculators as well as high-end digital processors, said Randall. PC CHIP SALES FALLING SHORT

Last month, Intel warned of a fourth-quarter revenue shortfall as a result of slowing PC demand. While that slowdown touched off a string of recent profit warnings by computer makers Gateway Inc. <GTW.N>, Compaq Computer Corp. <CPQ.N>, and Dell Computer Corp. <DELL.O>, semiconductor sales to PC makers have slowed accordingly.

Although semiconductor sales were driven hard last year by demand for chips used in mobile devices and Internet infrastructure, Intel lost market share, posting the slowest growth rate among the top 10 semiconductor makers - only 11 percent compared with 31 percent for the industry - technology consulting firm Gartner Group`s Dataquest Inc. said.

Making matters worse, the long-anticipated launch of Intel`s Itanium chip is two years behind schedule.

Intel shares have suffered as a result and are down by more than 55 percent from their year high. In Nasdaq trading on Tuesday, Intel climbed $1-1/2 to $31-9/16, but remained near the low end of its 52-week range, $29-13/16 to $75-13/16. NEW CONSUMER PRODUCTS ARE LOW MARGIN, ANALYSTS SAY

Intel and analysts agree that the new business certainly will not replace microprocessors in terms of revenues.

"The new markets they`re targeting have good revenue growth prospects associated with them but the margin model is less than their standard for microprocessors," said Randall.

The profit margin is 60 to 80 percent for many microprocessors, but only about 20 to 40 percent for these kinds of consumer electronics, Randall said. So from an earnings perspective, it is unrealistic to expect the business to significantly counter the softness in Intel`s core microprocessor business.

Intel plans to display the new product on Friday at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. It also plans to demonstrate technology that it has developed for possible use in future products, including a tablet PC and a wireless pad device for instant messaging, according to Intel Communications Manager Bill Calder.

The audio player as well as an accessory kit will be available nationwide in February at most computer stores and online retailers. The player is priced at $299.99 and the kit is priced at $59.99.
