      Hintergrund: Wie NTT Docomo im mobilen Internet Geld verdient
      ------------------------------------------------------------

      Das Mobilfunkunternehmen NTT Docomo schafft in Japan, wovon andere Anbieter bisher nur träumen: Es verdient Geld mit dem mobilen Internet. Im Weihnachtsgeschäft kamen wöchentlich rund 400 000 zu den bisher schon 17 Millionen Kunden des Dienstes "i-Mode" hinzu. Der seit Februar 1999 angebotene Dienst bietet kleine Grafiken auf dem Farbdisplay und erlaubt Texte in japanischen Zeichen. Demnächst sind auch interaktive Java-Inhalte möglich.

      NTT Docomo gehört zu Japans größtem Mobilfunkanbieter, der NTT Group, der sich zu 59 Prozent in Händen des japanischen Staates befindet. Docomo hat mittlerweile eine Marktkapitalisierung von etwa 279 Milliarden Dollar und ist damit zweimal größer als die Konzernmutter. Im ersten Halbjahr 2000 lag der Gewinn bei über zwei Milliarden Dollar die von über 32 Millionen Mobilfunkkunden erwirtschaftet wurden.

      Content bieten über 20 000 kleinere Anbieter, darunter Kontakt-Dienste, Wetter und Aktien. Die Grundgebühr für i-mode liegt bei umgerechnet etwa fünf Mark, die weitere Abrechnung läuft nach Datenmenge und den Gebühren der einzelnen Inhalteanbieter. Ein attraktiver Dienst für ein Land, in dem die Durchdringung mit dem Internet noch relativ gering ist.

      UMTS geht in Japan bereits in diesem Mai an den Start. Durch Kooperationen und Beteiligungen will NTT Docomo ein weltweites Netz aufbauen. Über die niederländische KPN Mobile will man die deutsche E-Plus erreichen, Zukäufe bei AT&T Wireless versprechen das Tor zum US-Markt aufzustoßen, mit einer Beteiligung an Hutchison Telecom hofft man auf Kunden in Hongkong und Großbritannien.

      Cahners In-Stat forecasts that there will be more than 240 million wireless Internet subscribers in North America and Europe by 2004.

In October 2000, market research firm IDC reported "technology is a critical enabler for all mobile and remote users across all regions. As adoption of handheld devices increases, as wireless and broadband technologies for business travelers improve ... mobile and remote user growth will skyrocket." According to a 1999 forecast from Killen and Associates, revenues from wireless applications are expected to reach $37.5 billion as soon as 2002.
