LOS ANGELES, Jan 25 (Reuters) - Troubled Internet toy retailer eToys Inc.(NASDAQ NM:ETYS) Thursday reported a hefty fourth-quarter loss that was greater than forecasts, despite showing strong revenue growth.
The company, which previously warned that its holiday results were well below plan and has since slashed its staff by 70 percent, reported an operating loss, excluding charges, of $74.5 million or 52 cents per share in the quarter, compared with a loss of $62.5 million or 52 cents per share in the year-ago quarter.
Most analysts had been forecasting a loss of 46 cents per share, according to First Call/Thomson Financial, which tracks estimates.
Much of the latest loss reflects eToys` aggressive investment in infrastructure, which it spent in anticipation of a robust season.
The company, which is exploring strategic options, including a possible merger, said its sales rose to $131.2 from $106.8 million. It added that it has enough cash on hand to last through March 31.

26/01 03:52 UPDATE 1-EToys says met with creditors on restructuring
(Recasts lead, adds committee of creditors formed)
LOS ANGELES, Jan 25 (Reuters) - Troubled Internet toy
retailer eToys Inc.<ETYS.O> on Thursday reported an $85 million net loss for the fourth quarter that leaves it with only enough cash to fund its business until about the end of March.
The Los Angeles-based company also said that it was in
touch with a committee of leading creditors to try to work outa restructuring that would keep it out of court.
The creditors, including several major toy companies, have agreed to give not to press their claims on eToys until at least the end of January, while they examine its assets and marketing strategy, the company said.
eToys, which also owns eKids and Toys.com, previously
warned that its holiday results were well below plan and
slashed 70 percent of its workforce. For the fourth quarter,
the company reported an operating loss, excluding charges, of$74.5 million or 52 cents per share in the fourth quarter.
Most analysts had been forecasting a loss of 46 cents per
share, according to First Call/Thomson Financial.
Much of eToys` losses reflected its aggressive spending oninfrastructure and advertising, which it ramped up in
anticipation of a robust season. The company spent almost $39 million on advertising in the last quarter -- acquiring new customers for the equivalent of $40 each.
The company burned through almost $49 million in the fourth quarter, leaving it with $63 million on hand at the end of December, enough to fund operations through the next quarter, although it said that could not be assured.
The informal committee of creditors, included
representatives of Mattel Inc. <MAT.N>, Hasbro Inc. <HAS.N>,
Lego Systems, and R.R. Donnelley & Sons, Staffmark, Fir Tree
Partners and Pacific Asset Management, who together represent about 44 percent of its debt, eToys said.
The two sides initially met on Jan. 15, and entered into a standstill agreement under which committee members have agreed not to take any action to collect on their debts through Jan. 31.
Management was not available for comment after the earnings announcement. eToys has retained the investment bank Goldman Sachs to look at the prospect for a merger, sale or some other restructuring, negotiations that limit the ability of the company to comment now, said eToys spokesman Ken Ross.
Some analysts have said the eToys name remains its
strongest asset, but a European Internet artists group called etoy --all lower case letters--filed suit on Thursday in San Diego alleging trademark infringement and seeking control of the online retailer`s domain name.
