ZURICH, Jan 26 (Reuters) - Crop protection and seeds group Syngenta International AG said on Friday it and collaborative partner Myriad Genetics Inc (NasdaqNM:MYGN - news) had completed mapping the rice genome.

Syngenta said it was ``the first project of its kind in a crop plant to be completed``. The project was conducted at the Torrey Mesa Rsearch Institute (TMRI) in California.

Rice, partly due to its huge importance as a food crop, has been one of the key food crops attracting research from genetic scientists aiming to map genomes.

A genome contains the basic information that makes up living organisms, encoded in chromosomes made up of double-stranded chains of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid).

Syngenta expected the knowledge gained from its rice genome map to lead to improvements in rice and other food crops.

``Because of the similarity between different cereal crop plants, the information derived from rice will contribute to the study of other important cereals such as wheat (and) corn, and lead to their future improvement,`` Novartis said.

It said a more detailed analysis was underway, the first findings from which would be presented at the Keystone Symposium in Big Sky, Montana January 26-31.

Syngenta, formed last year from the spun-off agribusiness activities of Novartis AG and AstraZeneca Plc (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: AZN.L), said it planned to use the rice genomics data for new commercial applications in agribusiness.

But it would collaborate with the academic community, allowing researchers and plant breeders to apply the data to advanced breeding methods, it added.

Myriad Genetics, based in Salt Lake City, Utah, began in 1991 as a start-up with venture capital funding. It discovered gene BRCA1 which causes breast cancer in 1994, and similar gene BRCA2 a short time later.

U.S. scientist Craig Venter, chairman and chief scientific officer of Celera Genomics (NYSE:CRA - news), created a stir last year by completing efforts to decipher the human genome.

Hört sich zwar gut an aber wenn ich ungefähr richtig liege, hat es bereits Novartis geschafft dem Reiskorn Vitamin E genetisch zu verabreichen. Das Patent sollte an Entwicklungsländer verschenkt werden, die es aber dankend ablehnten und lieber mit den dort vorhandenen Augenkrankheiten (hervorgerufen durch Vitanin E Mangel)weiterleben wollen.

stimmt nicht. Syngenta ist ein Spin-off von Novartis.
MYGN hat auf Auftrag von bzw. mit Syngenta zusammen gearbeitet.

Leider hat MYGN nich so toll reagiert, da sind vermutlich schon vorher Insider eingestiegen.

wenn ich mir den chart der vergangenheit so anschaue, sieht der kursverlauf ja wirklich "sehr gut" aus, verglichen mit anderen werten aus der sparte biotech

bin grad am überlegen ob ich noch einsteigen soll oder noch abwarten soll (aber wozu eigentlich warten, langfristig scheint die ja ihren weg eh zu machen)

aber: was ist eigentlich das hauptforschungsgebiet von MYGN

von meinen PDLI weiß ich das ja schließlich auch

Of the 20 stocks on my screen, in diff sectors of the bio tech space I can see only CALP up 1/4. Other 19 are down. But MYGN is up
7%. Something is happening, and we should soon the triple digits, I think / hope.

Schon komisch wenn ein Wert 7% steigt(77$), wenn der Sektor um 2,3% fällt.Und den gestrigen Kursverlauf nicht vergessen! Ausserdem kommt mir das Ganz ziemlich bekannt vor. Die Erkenntnisse des Reiscodes sind wohl auch schon vor der offiziellen Stellungsnahme durchgesickert. Vielleicht steht ja ein Grossauftrag an oder die Zahlen sind einfach sehr sehr gut.

Myriad hat es heute geschafft! Die 38-Tage-Linie ist überwunden. Jetzt brauchen wir morgen noch einen guten Tag um dieses Ereignis zu bestätigen! Dann haben wir nicht viel Spielraum zur 200-Tage-Linie die bei ca.83$ liegt! Wenn es morgen gut läuft schafft sie diese bis spätestens nächste Woche auch noch!

Myriad Genetics Publishes Prostate Cancer Gene
SALT LAKE CITY, Jan. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Myriad Genetics, Inc. (Nasdaq: MYGN - news) announced today that the first known gene to put men at high risk for developing prostate cancer has been identified in a newly published study by researchers at Myriad Genetics Inc. and the University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City, and at two universities in Canada.

Myriad scientists and their collaborators discovered that two mutations of the gene -- named HPC2 for Hereditary Prostate Cancer 2 and also called ELAC2 -- place men who carry the mutant forms at high risk of developing the cancer, while two other ``variants`` of the gene confer a moderate increase in prostate cancer risk.

The research was part of Myriad`s cancer genetics collaboration with Schering-Plough Corp. Scientists do not yet fully understand HPC2`s role in normal prostate function or how abnormal forms of the gene contribute to prostate cancer. HPC2 is a member of a gene family that is predicted to encode a metal-dependant hydrolase enzyme domain. Myriad and its collaborators are currently investigating the HPC2 gene`s contribution to prostate cancer to address the molecular mechanism of action with new prostate cancer drugs.

The study, conducted by 43 scientists, was published in the February issue of the journal Nature Genetics. It details the discovery first announced last October when the American Society of Human Genetics met in Philadelphia.

The research team was led by Sean Tavtigian, Vice President and Director for Cancer Research at Myriad Genetics, genetic epidemiologist Lisa Cannon-Albright and molecular geneticist Susan Neuhausen of the University of Utah`s medical informatics department; Jacques Simard of Laval University in Quebec City; and Johanna Rommens of the University of Toronto.

``In the general population, between 5 percent and 10 percent of men get prostate cancer by age 80,`` said Dr. Sean Tavtigian. ``In these families, up to 20 percent or 30 percent of the men get prostate cancer, and often at a younger age, primarily in their 50s and 60s. Men who carry one of the high-risk HPC2 mutations are five to 10 times more likely to get prostate cancer than other men. Men who carry the moderate-risk forms of the gene are 1.5 to three times more likely to get the disease.``

To find the HPC2 gene, the University of Utah researchers used the state cancer registry and the Utah Population Database to find families with greater-than-expected rates of prostate cancer. Myriad extracted DNA from the blood to study genetic material. By studying 33 Utah families with excessive rates of prostate cancer, the researchers determined a gene on chromosome 17 conferred an inherited risk of developing prostate cancer. When the analysis was expanded to 127 high-risk Utah families, the researchers were able to identify the specific gene as HPC2.

``I believe all common diseases have an underlying, inherited predisposition,`` continued Dr. Cannon-Albright. ``Because there are other risk factors and multiple genes for common diseases, these types of genes are thought to be extremely difficult to find. But finding them is clearly possible, and is going to provide the key to earlier diagnosis and more appropriate treatment. That`s going to result in less illness and death.``

Myriad is developing a predictive medicine test, to be called PROLARIS(TM) for the identification of men at high risk of prostate cancer, which is scheduled for introduction late in calendar 2001. Studies indicate a strong inherited predisposition may be responsible for 5 percent to 10 percent of all prostate cancers. Genes that pose a moderate risk of prostate cancer might account for an additional 20 percent to 40 percent of all cases.

The American Cancer Society estimates that 198,100 men in the United States will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during 2001. The group estimates prostate cancer will kill 31,500 men in the United States in 2001, making it the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in American men after lung cancer. More than 70 percent of all prostate cancers are diagnosed in men older than 65. Early diagnosis using the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test and digital rectal exams means the five-year survival rate for men with prostate cancer has increased from 67 percent 20 years ago to 93 percent today.

Die Kursentwicklung von Myriad ist ein gute Punkt. Habe vor 2 Wochen bei 56 Euro gekauft, bis heute 50% im Plus.

Ich würde gerne noch nahckaufen. Meint Ihr, es gibt einen Pullback in die 70er oder tiefer? oder wie seht Ihr den Kursverlauf? Charttechnisch sehe ich im 85-er Umfeld einen Widerstand. Werden wir diesen sofort durchbrechen und zum nächsten Widerstand bei 100 Euro springen? Die GD38 und GD200 geben sich bei 80 die Hand.

Was denkt Ihr? Vertex hat auch gerade einen Pullback, allerdings gibt es auch nicht so viele Gerüchte zu Vertex im Markt. Bin bullish für beide Werte

Nach der amerikanischen Gesellschaft für Krebsforschung stellt Prostatakrebs die zweithäufigste Todesursache für Krebstod nach dem Lungentod für Männer dar. 31.500 Männer vielen dieser Krankheit jährlich in den USA zum Opfer.
