Taiwan Oil Spill Threatens Park



TAIPEI, Taiwan--More than 100 workers spent Monday scooping up spilled oil, hoping to clean up leakage from a sunken tanker that officials say threatens a coral reef natural reserve.
More than 1,000 tons of fuel oil poured out of the Greek-registered Amargos near a maritime national park in the southern resort town of Kenting after the tanker sank Jan. 14, officials said.
Cleanup only began over the weekend because of difficulties in finding workers during the lunar Chinese new year holidays, said Liu Hsin-ming, a park official.
The slick contaminated about 3,300 feet of the Lungkeng coral reef along the island`s Pacific coast, a scenic rocky area in the massive Kenting park, Liu said. The area is in the Bashi Channel north of the Philippines.
"We saw several dead crabs and fishes, but we cannot say how much damage it would do to marine life at this moment," Liu said.
Local newspapers quoted ecologists as saying it may take 10 years before marine life could restore ecological balance.
The Transportation Ministry said it has barred the ship`s senior crew members from leaving Taiwan pending investigation and possible criminal charges.
As workers cleaned oil off the coastline, Liu said officials would act soon to pump out the remaining 200 tons of oil from the tanker`s hull.
The 35,000 -ton vessel suffered mechanical problems in high waves on its way from Singapore to the eastern Chinese port city of Nantong. The ship drifted into high seas and broke in two, but all 25 crew members were rescued, officials said.
Liu said the oil spill is expected to be cleaned in another week while it may take a year before the oil sludge could be completely washed away by waves.
Kenting is about 270 miles from the capital, Taipei.

Laßt doch einfach Cargolifter alles transportieren, dann passierts sowas nicht mehr ;-))

Trorzdem natürlich eine schlimme Sache das ganze! Vielleicht sollte man eine AG gründen, die sich mit Katastrophen beschäftigt und diese zu verhindern versucht, der würde wenigstens NIE die Arbeit ausgehen.
